Cineworld CEO suggests Wonder Woman 1984 should be delayed

At least one theater chain CEO feels that Wonder Woman 1984 should push its release date into 2021.

It has been a week of mixed news for movie theaters. The week began with news that a coronavirus vaccine is close to being ready and may even begin distribution before the end of the year. Meanwhile, cases are continuing to rage across the world, and that has forced some European countries back into various forms of lockdown.

As the week progressed, it was rumored that Cineworld - the owners of Regal Cinemas - was going to temporarily close all of its locations again. Not long after that news, California announced it was pushing 11 counties back into the highest level of restrictions which would mandate all indoor theaters, not just Regal Cinemas, shut back down.

In the midst of all of this news, Variety spoke with various industry leaders about the hope the vaccine was giving them about the future. Mooky Greidinger, CEO of Cineworld, while hopeful in the long term, was a bit more pessimistic about the short term. “If you ask me if it’s kosher to open [Wonder Woman 1984] in December, my answer is no," said Greidinger. “If it goes in February [instead], I believe it could be a huge movie. We don’t want to open it and be disappointed. [By waiting,] the picture around vaccination will be clearer.”

Greidinger's pessimism is notable as it was the Regal Cinema location at the Irvine Spectrum Center in Irvine, California that brought in the most money domestically for Tenet. Despite Orange County, where the theater is located, not currently being under the harshest restrictions, the location is shutting down for an unknown amount of time.

Currently, Wonder Woman 1984 is the last of the major releases on the schedule for 2020. There has been no word from Warner Bros. as of yet if it plans to move the film.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 25.

Definitely. And February won’t be better. Sorry I know that’s pessimistic. I just think the next big movie will be the next Tenet. And the next one after that too, and so on. There’s been a paradigm shift, and it’ll take another one to reverse that, but it’s easier by far to make things worse than it is to make them better. Don’t ask me when, I have no clue, but February sounds bad too.

  I think it could be well into 2022 before things like this start to go back to normal sadly, i think within the next 2 years something big is going to happen in the film world what could very well change everything going forward and i think Disney will be doing that by focusing hard on Streaming and these premium prices.

    Yeah. Totally agree. Whatever does happen will be totally different. Hey at least we knocked avatar down before the end of movie theaters! Marvel, dc, doesn’t matter, a cbm reigns!

IF the vaccine works it will be summer 2021 at the earliest before the population of America and Europe are fully inoculated. Wait til the summer to maximise profits, WB!

Just heard one of the saddest things I’ve heard yet in all this.
I do portable xrays at nursing homes. Went to one I haven’t gone to in over year, maybe two. Nurse told me they had 25 die in a few months. I was like “yeah I’ve seen that a lot when corona hits a facility” she said “it hasn’t hit us yet. It’s the Alzheimer’s unit. They died from quarantine, from isolation and disconnection from family, speeding up their dementia”
Not fever but cabin fever. Isn’t that sad? It’s like a secondary plague. Activities and visits keep them going. Not right now though.

  Truly sad. Cancer deaths are up in my country as well because they haven't been able to receive the care they would have expected otherwise.

    Yeah I can imagine, and my wife was a director of nurses at a facility with developmentally disabled but generally younger and healthier residents than at nursing homes like where I work. Well, coronavirus struck and it was still new and terrifying so most everyone got it and or quit. She stayed but not for long. Residents were dying left and right and her license was at stake so she left. I asked, “how’d so many young and healthy people die?” “Young people died, but they were no longer healthy. No one was there to even feed them. They were malnourished and thereby more susceptible.” 😳they had my wife there all the time and she was miserable and finally quit, THEN they called for help from nursing agencies, after it was too late.
