Barry Keoghan joins the cast of The Batman as Stanley Merkel

In a surprise to many, it seems that Barry Keoghan snuck into the cast of The Batman at some point.

It seems that there was at least one bit of casting news somehow was kept quiet about The Batman. It was revealed in the description attached to The Batman trailer on YouTube that Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) had signed on to play Stanley Merkel.

Stanley Merkel was James Gordon's original partner, and most famously appeared in the Batman: Year One storyline. Seeing as Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) is only referred to as "GCPD's Jim Gordon," it does seem he is not the commissioner quite yet in this film.

With the confirmation that this is only in the second year of Batman's crusade, it makes sense that we aren't dealing with quite the origin, but everyone is still finding their place in this world of Gotham. During the Batman panel at DC FanDome, Reeves gave examples such as Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz) isn't fully Catwoman yet, and Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) isn't a crime kingpin yet and despises being called 'Penguin.'

How large or small Keoghan's role will remains to be seen.

Currently, The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Merkel bite the dust in DARK VICTORY? There may be more in common with DV than we first realised.

I remember him being cast to Yorick in that 'Y the last man' TV adaptation, I wonder if that's still a thing. (A show about a virus killing ONLY all the men on earth seems so unrealistic nowadays)

The more i hear about the storyline,the more exciting it sounds. Also the GCPD series for HBO Max is dealing with Year 1 but seen through the eyes of the police, one in particular cop i believe. I think this could all build to something special.
I still hope Affleck gets to do his movie/series as well on HBO Max. Its a great time to be a DC fan.

Loving the comic book accuracy. That trailer was fire. Hot Fire. I really hope there's a lot more of that vicious bat action. I was worried they wouldn't be able to match the ferocity of batfleck. I stand corrected. If anything good comes out of this production break it's that the people making the movie now have a rough idea that's what people like about it already and they have yet to film 75% of the rest of the film.
