DC FanDome: Wonder Woman 1984 trailer shows off new footage

Wonder Woman 1984 is inching towards release at long last, and the cast and crew were at DC FanDome to support it.

The new Wonder Woman 1984 trailer has arrived, and we're shown a lot of new footage. And yes, it finally includes our first look at the final form of Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).

While the plot of the movie is still not entirely clear, it does appear that Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) has a grand, nefarious plan, but no clue what that is exactly as of yet. As to how and why Barbara Ann Minerva becomes Cheetah we'll just have to wait and see, but it looks great.

Fast forward to the 1980s as Wonder Woman’s next big screen adventure finds her facing two all-new foes: Max Lord and The Cheetah.
With director Patty Jenkins back at the helm and Gal Gadot returning in the title role, “Wonder Woman 1984” is Warner Bros. Pictures’ follow up to the DC Super Hero’s first outing, 2017’s record-breaking “Wonder Woman,” which took in $822 million at the worldwide box office. The film also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Max Lord, Robin Wright as Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 2.

WW84 is 100% confirmed to be in continuity with BvS. So lol right back at ya.

And why is that? Director Patty Jenkins says it’s because “I’m not a huge fan of doing Chapter 2 of a seven-chapter story” and instead “every movie in my opinion that I want to make should be its own great movie,” meaning they want the story to be able to stand on its own and be enjoyed in isolation and so are treating it more as an anthology or episodic thing, as opposed to part 1/part 2 in a more serialized format. And that probably has something to do with why Jenkins decided against her initial hopes to “include Cheetah ‘in the beginning of the last movie’ as a tease for what was to come.”
Additionally, Roven explains that Jenkins “wanted to make sure that we had the character in a universe that was standalone so that we can continue her character without having to weave the other characters. We wanted to make sure we could deal with her themes.” So, confusing language aside, as the article writer says, it is technically a sequel, but they’re calling it standalone because the big idea is not wanting to involve other DCEU characters and instead just make it about Wonder Woman alone.
“That’s also why it was important to set the film in the year 1984, before the events of Man of Steel. Everything in the DC cinematic universe ‘evolved from that,’ Roven notes.” So they even go so far as to mention where the movie stands in relation to MoS to explain that they’ve set WW84 in MoS’s same universe, but before it, in the pre-metahumans-everywhere DCEU, because “We felt that we just needed to focus on her like we did on Wonder Woman.”
To go even further to remove any doubt that may still exist in your mind at this point, Jenkins has clarified and elaborated on this issue at https://www.google.com/amp/... even though “There was a little period of time where people got very upset, and questioning: ‘Is it not a sequel? Is it a total reboot?’” that “It is a sequel, insofar as nothing is contradicted between the two movies.” It’s simply that she wanted to make it “not more of the first movie. It’s a totally different movie,” giving it its own, unique “tone, look, feel, world, and context” compared to the first WW. So in summation, “This is its own standalone story that, of course, is also a continuation of our characters and their linear line. It’s just its own movie with its own very different feel.”
So it is most definitely in continuity with MoS and the first WW, too, which of course also ties it to BvS, since WW’s whole story is built off direct connections to BvS’s story, and also BvS continues directly from MoS. But even further cementing that BvS connection, it is explained in the Collider article that the production team answered questions of “how ... Diana don[s] her gleaming Amazonian armor to fight crime in public but is still discovered for the first time by Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne decades later during the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” with “Diana [having] ways of operating around the public eye, and the rest we’ll have to wait to see when the movie arrives.”
This means they are in fact without any doubt taking the continuity of BvS/JL that some have claimed is being thrown out the door into account and all but confirms that those of us who thought WW’s taking out the security cameras when she was fighting in the first trailer was in order to remain secret (thus maintaining the continuity of JL/BvS) were right, which also fits with that mall fight’s being described in this article the following way: “[Diana] swoops in and does her thing quietly, discretely, and disappears.” Her “stepping away from mankind,” as per BvS, also is upheld by the following description in the article of WW during the movie: “‘She’s slightly disengaged with the world and a bit lonely as the world whips around her,’ Obropta Gadot says Diana ‘doesn’t really want to make close connections with anyone. She knows either she’s going to hurt them because she’ll have to disappear one day or she will lose them because they’ll grow old. After the loss of Steve and the entire team later on, I think Diana is in a place where she’s happy where she is. She’s fairly lonely, but she made the decision to do that.’”
Furthermore, Zack Snyder, who helped planning and worldbuilding with Jenkins, helped write the first WW, and is a producer for both WW and WW84, on top of directing MoS and BvS of course (so he should have an idea what he’s talking about), said at DC FanDome that WW was simply “staying quiet” since Steve Trevor’s death and says that WW84 takes place before his Justice League (and thus is in continuity with it, especially the theatrical version, since it was so micromanaged by the studio, he noted) in this interview: https://m.youtube.com/watch...
So as long as her loneliness is still true after WW84, too, and she isn’t known by the whole world by the end, continuity will be preserved, since BvS only establishes that WW is first discovered by the wider world in that movie and that it hadn’t happened before because she had “walked away from the world of man” without actually specifying what that meant necessarily as far as her activities in the past century were (though her claim in that movie of having fought “thingS” from other worlds before, her investigation of Luthor, her immediate turn to join Superman and Batman in fighting Doomsday, and her being implied to keep doing good around the world at the end of the first WW which was helped written by Zack Snyder all suggest that line from BvS wasn’t intended to be interpreted that she was just sitting on her butt doing nothing the whole time, and this is confirmed by the interpretation applied to it by the scene in Justice League in which Bruce lectures Diana about how he never heard of her before even though she “saves people” and helps them “see their better selves,” simply due to the fact that she wasn’t a “beacon to the world” in the same way Superman was). And considering all the things we’ve established above, that will surely be the case.

Idk why, but this movie just doesn't excite me at all. It's not that any of this looks bad or anything, but Idk... I'm just getting this "been there done that" feeling.
I may have my worries & complaints with Reeves' Batman, but from what we've seen, the last thing it appears to be is unoriginal. This looks kinda generic.

    To me it doesn't really look like it's really borrowing from any other film. It has a few aspects from the first film I liked and is set in a period I like. I don't see much I don't like.

      It's not that I think it's downright copying other movies, but more in the sense that this doesn't seem to be doing anything particularly special or unique. Like I said, nothing about it really excites me. I didn't love the first movie, maybe that has something to do with it, but unlike this, the first movie's trailers really got me excited. Maybe cause I prefer the WW1 setting, Idk.. I did feel like they kinda wasted the setting in the first movie though. First WW84 trailer did have that "80s" feeling, but here you can barely tell.

I know. Its called a comic book hero vs a bad CGI villain perhaps. Many people are saying they like Cheetah but you cannot also say that her CGI is flawless. This film so far just looks OK for for me.No real excitement.

Bceause it looks generic, the idea of bringing back Steve is bad, they left out the "Mythology" aspect, it looks too much like a soap opera, the villains look ridiculous, it also seems to have influence from the old crappy tv show, the action scenes look nothing special, the "comedy" is not funny, there is nothing that stands out

I feel the same.
I think, for me, its the lack of a clear story being shown in any of these teasers/trailers. There's a lot of stylized imagery and dramatic statements/jokes, but very little context or story setting. I already know Wonder Woman is cool so I don't need to be sold on that. Instead, I want to see why this is a Wonder Woman story.
I'm also not nearly as interested in the 80s as so many people seem to be right now, so perhaps the fact that they really seem to be pushing the 80s vibe is meant to sell more than it is for me.

The "humor" in this film seems to be based
upon Steve being clueless about life in 1984.

Clueless is one thing but making him look
like an innocent child or worse an idiot
is not the Steve Trevor of the first film.

I went to the cinema to see Tenet this past weekend. Where I am there are just two active cases, and they're both in quarantine, and our borders are still closed to not allow anyone in. Not everywhere is in the same boat at the moment...

The first trailer definitely had more of an 80’s vibe to it, but I guess they did have to showcase some of the more dramatic stuff eventually. It still looks good - but at this point it just needs to drop... unfortunately I feel like some of the hype for the movie has died down from so much delay
