DC Comics ends deal with Diamond Comics Distribution

After 25 years, DC Comics has opted to end its distribution relationship with Diamond Comics Distribution.

In an email sent to retailers on Friday morning, DC announced that it has cut ties with Diamond Comics Distribution. Going forward, all weekly DC product will be distributed through Lunar Distribution and UCS Comic Distributor. Penguin Random House will take over the supply chain for graphic novels and collected trade paperbacks.

“We recognize that, to many of you, this may seem like a momentous decision," said a DC spokesperson. "However, we can assure you that this change in DC's distribution plans has not been made lightly and follows a long period of thought and consideration. The change of direction is in line with DC's overall strategic vision intended to improve the health of, and strengthen, the Direct Market as well as grow the number of fans who read comics worldwide.”

The email continued, “In the near term, Diamond will only be fulfilling orders placed through June 1 Final Order Cut-Off and will not solicit the sale of new DC titles further. To ensure a smooth transition for retailers, DC will suspend Final Order Cut-Off for June 8, making those books available to order on Final Order Cut-Off on June 15.”

In a follow-up statement to The Hollywood Reporter a DC spokesperson said, “After 25 years, DC and Diamond Comic Distributors are ending their long-standing relationship. Moving forward, comic book retailers can obtain their DC books from Penguin Random House, or their books and periodicals through Lunar or UCS comic book distributors. DC continues to be committed to providing the Direct Market with best in class service and the fans with the world’s greatest comic books.”

The decision follows the suspension of distribution by Diamond in March, which was immediately followed by an announcement that it would be withholding payments to publishers.

      I didn't care for his take on Joker but I would have liked to see more of it to judge.

      But, this is par for the course for a Snyder zealot like you, to state something you want to be true as fact when it is too early to say anything like that with confidence.
      Justice League was still 80% Zack's film. Both directors had their work edited and taken in a direction they disagreed with.
      Justice League is closer to Zack's original story than SS is to Ayers, so it seems.

      While Snyder always came up with bull about what was in the film and stuff (the dead Robin is Dick thing for instance) he has always maintained the UE of BvS is what the film should be and the JL we got was not his film. For nearly 3 years now Ayer has defended SS while taking blame on bad choices and has said the cut we got was his film, it feels like now that Snyder got his way he think he can. Of course like or not Snyder has a bigger following who want his JL then Ayer has his SS, hell i would rather see The Snyder Cut then seeing Ayer's Cut because most of the problems with SS are rooted in its core.

      Exactly. Ayer is only playing the "woe is me, I was so mistreated, release my cut" card now that he sees the money Snyder no doubt got paid for reassembling old footage. He never cared one bit before. The issues with Suicide Squad were far bigger than any recut could probably fix and I see little there worth seeing another cut of. More Jared Leto? He was unpleasant with what we saw and he by Ayer's own admission was never important, so who cares? The gernic faceless bad guy monsters were meant to be parademons? Who cares? They're still generic faceless monsters. Making a suicide squad movie a weak half-hearted tie in to Justice League doesn't change the fact that Ayer and the studio wasted the chance to actually make a suicide squad movie. Oh, Geoff Johns changed an on screen line about Harley? Maybe don't sexualize her like a warped pervert and we can talk about how Johns screwed over Ayer by changing a line suggesting she helped Joker kill a Robin we never saw and who will never exist.

    I mean, yeah it does seem kinda selfish, not gonna lie. He did start talk bad about it before the actual Snyder Cut announcement, though, but it still doesn't sit right with me that he defended the movie opening night as "his cut." However, I'd still like to see the Ayer Cut - admittedly for purely self-serving reasons, unlike with the Snyder Cut - because the way he's been describing it on Twitter does actually sound like it might be significantly better.

There's a whole lot of behind-the-scenes leaks and scoops and rumors about Geoff Johns' basically taking total control of the DCEU against everyone's wishes and then driving it into the ground because he didn't know what he was doing. Hence why he isn't even working for them anymore except for what he was already attached to. Great comics have come from that man, but he has a pretty bad track record when it comes to movies.

  My comment was specific to the point that when Chris was running things he never would have covered big news like this that affects DC comics (actual comics), even though it affects Batman comics, which in turn can affect Batman in other media.
  The actual news story is to do with a company called Diamond distributors, which ad a monoply on distributing comics for Marvel and DC for multiple decades, meaning they can set prices, refuse to sell to comic shops that cross them, and in general they had a lot of control and it was not a competitive market.
  DC ending that business relationship is huge news because it ends Diamond's monopoly and opens the market up to be competitive, which is a good thing for comics and comic shops.
  Even so called Batman fans who have never touched a comic (which I maintain is like a Tomb Raider fan that has never played one of the games), should care because this has positive effects on the medium. Like it or not Batman in other media is still dependent on Batman in comics.

This is a very good thing. Embrace the change people. Diamond no longer has a monopoly; Diamond no longer has the comic book industry by the balls. People have been asking for this for years and now that it's here the same people are complaining. This will be great for DC comics and I won't be surprised if Marvel finds new distribution too.

      Exactly, at least Josh Trank dissed his own movie on opening night and was willing to accept the consequences.
      Ayer even admitted to some flaws on the movie and took blame, now he' throwing shade and putting blame on others and playing victim.

        While Snyder always came up with bull about what was in the film and stuff (the dead Robin is Dick thing for instance) he has always maintained the UE of BvS is what the film should be and the JL we got was not his film. For nearly 3 years now Ayer has defended SS while taking blame on bad choices and has said the cut we got was his film, it feels like now that Snyder got his way he think he can. Of course like or not Snyder has a bigger following who want his JL then Ayer has his SS, hell i would rather see The Snyder Cut then seeing Ayer's Cut because most of the problems with SS are rooted in its core.

        Exactly. Ayer is only playing the "woe is me, I was so mistreated, release my cut" card now that he sees the money Snyder no doubt got paid for reassembling old footage. He never cared one bit before. The issues with Suicide Squad were far bigger than any recut could probably fix and I see little there worth seeing another cut of. More Jared Leto? He was unpleasant with what we saw and he by Ayer's own admission was never important, so who cares? The gernic faceless bad guy monsters were meant to be parademons? Who cares? They're still generic faceless monsters. Making a suicide squad movie a weak half-hearted tie in to Justice League doesn't change the fact that Ayer and the studio wasted the chance to actually make a suicide squad movie. Oh, Geoff Johns changed an on screen line about Harley? Maybe don't sexualize her like a warped pervert and we can talk about how Johns screwed over Ayer by changing a line suggesting she helped Joker kill a Robin we never saw and who will never exist.

      I mean, yeah it does seem kinda selfish, not gonna lie. He did start talk bad about it before the actual Snyder Cut announcement, though, but it still doesn't sit right with me that he defended the movie opening night as "his cut." However, I'd still like to see the Ayer Cut - admittedly for purely self-serving reasons, unlike with the Snyder Cut - because the way he's been describing it on Twitter does actually sound like it might be significantly better.

There's a whole lot of behind-the-scenes leaks and scoops and rumors about Geoff Johns' basically taking total control of the DCEU against everyone's wishes and then driving it into the ground because he didn't know what he was doing. Hence why he isn't even working for them anymore except for what he was already attached to. Great comics have come from that man, but he has a pretty bad track record when it comes to movies.

And yet we have had two people, who’ve worked on a film with him, imply that he was “difficult” behind-the-scenes.     My comment was specific to the point that when Chris was running things he never would have covered big news like this that affects DC comics (actual comics), even though it affects Batman comics, which in turn can affect Batman in other media.
    The actual news story is to do with a company called Diamond distributors, which ad a monoply on distributing comics for Marvel and DC for multiple decades, meaning they can set prices, refuse to sell to comic shops that cross them, and in general they had a lot of control and it was not a competitive market.
    DC ending that business relationship is huge news because it ends Diamond's monopoly and opens the market up to be competitive, which is a good thing for comics and comic shops.
    Even so called Batman fans who have never touched a comic (which I maintain is like a Tomb Raider fan that has never played one of the games), should care because this has positive effects on the medium. Like it or not Batman in other media is still dependent on Batman in comics.

This is a very good thing. Embrace the change people. Diamond no longer has a monopoly; Diamond no longer has the comic book industry by the balls. People have been asking for this for years and now that it's here the same people are complaining. This will be great for DC comics and I won't be surprised if Marvel finds new distribution too.
