HBO Max launches with a selection of DC properties

HBO Max has finally launched, and there's a good selection of DC properties to get us started.

While there is no doubt the majority of DC fans are simply going to wait for Zack Snyder's Justice League to hit HBO Max, there are still some properties on there you may enjoy. Here is a complete list of the DC-related items available as of launch day.

Apparently the Snyder Cut is going to cost far more than 30 million to make, lol. This is a Snakes on a Plane situation. No way that money will be recouped.

They should have put that money toward season 10 of Friends, which clearly would make back that money.

I don't know about these companies and services but what other way of making money out of this movie do they have other than people subscribing to HBOmax?

  I think it's a Snakes on a Plane situation. They saw a lot of online activity and assume it's going to translate to $$$, except that isn't true. Snakes on a Plane barely made any money.
  I analyzed all the evidence in a tweet to ninja (which of course he denied lol) but twitter analytics show that there is almost no sizable crowd behind the Snyder cut related hashtags, and the petition maxed 170k signatures. the numbers are simply not there to justify a more than 30 million investment.
  It's especially baffling as a) you could throw that much at things that absolutely would generate profit and b) the Snyder cult are small but dedicated, they probably would have donated the money to a kickstarter to finish the vfx, and c) they always said they would have been happy with the workprint.
  Truly odd. I think we are going to see this decision backfire and HBO Max leadership be replaced. Wait and see.
  I mean honestly. New season of Friends or finish the Snyder Cut, super easy decision and they made the wrong one.

    Snyder Cut is bigger than you're giving it credit. You sound like you have something personal against it. I would personally pay to NOT have another season of Friends, I think it's one of the most overrated shows ever and the characters are only relatable to 90's white america.There.       I'm talking from a purely objective perspective. I'm not that into Friends myself, only saw it for the first time a few years ago, but there is no denying how big it was and that there is a fanbase that dwarfs the people who wanted the Snyder Cut.
      If you want to provide evidence that the Snyder Cut is bigger than I have said, please do so, but I am going by all available evidence which include the campaigns to get it released and the activity on Twitter.

      Snyder cut is not even part of top 20 Google search queries for HBO max.General public don't care.They moved on a long time ago.DC is lucky to even be a part of conversation cause of Aquaman and Joker.
      This Snyder Cut adventure is pretty much by clueless HBO max executives who came from outside and mistakenly believes that a vocal minority cult on twitter represent entire DC fan-base.

      A poll showed that the Snyder Cut was one of the most anticipated things for HBO Max. I think it was about the same as Friends, if not more.

      From google trends, You can yourself check that Snyder cut is not even in top 20 search queries on google related to HBO max.It is at number 22 and this is when Snyder cut is at it's peak cause of all the attention it is getting after announcement.

    That said, though, I'm honestly surprised they're spending so much, too, seeing as it's evidently way more than THR thought. They clearly believe in Snyder's vision, that's all I can think of. Which means we'll probably be getting the sequels. It's an investment in the DCEU's future, they think it'll pay off then, probably.

  I'm not going to pretend I understand these economics in any way... but I do know that whatever they're spending is just a drop in the bucket for the parent company. And right now, it seems to be the biggest draw anyway.
  Think of it like this: Netflix has its own productions, some of which cost 150+ million. Disney+ also has all these shows that cost tens of millions to produce. Pretty sure The Mandalorian show cost around 100 million to make as well, yet Disney+ still has relatively few subscribers.
  So ignore the fact that they're spending probably around 70M to "finish" the Snyder Cut... just see it as an original "production" exclusive to HBO Max that will cost them 70M. How is that any different from Disney+ spending hundreds of millions to produce all these new Marvel shows?
  I'm pretty sure if HBO Max announced they were releasing a new show or movie that cost them 70 million, no one would bat an eye.
  Yeah, it will probably "lose" money in the short term, but if HBO Max is successful in the long run, I doubt they care. If you compare it to how much money Disney has spent, this (finishing the Snyder cut vs actually making a new movie/series from scratch) actually seems like a financially beneficial decision. But again, I'm no expert. This is just my basic understanding of things.

    The difference is the other streaming services are paying for shows, seasons with multiple episodes. They don't watch them all in one go, they watch them over a few days/weeks, and these services have multiple productions to keep people interested, new content each month.
    Snyder's movie is a one off deal. it's not something that's going to keep attracting people to the platform. Most people are going to pirate it or use the free trial to watch it, and then that's it, done.
    And the people vocal about wanting it are very very few if we are being honest, and not nearly enough to warrant the investment.
    It's especially confusing since the people asking for it would have been happy with the workprint. They could have been appeased at no extra cost.

      Again, would you be saying any of this if HBO Max produced a 70M original film that is also a "one off" and no one evidently asked for? Netflix makes movies like this all the time.
      And there's a lot of talk that the Snyder Cut might get split up into a 6 part series. If it is indeed 4 hours long, that's 6 episodes of 40 minutes. So there are ways around it.
      I'm not saying the Snyder Cut followers are the majority. They are clearly a vocal minority. But again, at least there's already a fanbase there. If it was an original production of the same cost, zero people would be excited for it now, yet no one would be saying "bad investment".

      You're comparing it to an original production, and I don't think that's a fair comparison.
      Plus, a lot of Netflix movies are way, way cheaper. One of the last ones I saw was called 'Eli', a horror movie, just looked it up and the budget was only 11 million. It's a pretty big difference from 70 million.
      How many movies can you name where the budget was 70 million or more? I can only think of movies with big names, and in each case they were submitted for Oscar or some other award, so there was an ulterior motive.
      I agree if they stretch it out into a mini series it would make more sense.
      I still think it's a weird situation because it's such a niche market to cater to with such a large budget.

      Oh, yes they are. You just don't watch them cause no one cares proving my point. Look at "Netflix Originals" and just appreciate how much crap is in that list. Movies that easily cost 50 million to make.
      And that's the thing, HBO Max can sort of "release" a 250 Million dollar movie for the price of 70 million or so. They didn't have to pay for development and production. So I don't see how this "isn't" the same situation at all.
      And of course I'm comparing to an original production. How is it logical to not object when streaming services make 70 million dollar original films that no one asked for, but to object when they're making a 250M movie for the cost of 70M that at least SOME people are asking for?
      Horrors are pretty much always dirt cheap. There's loads of stuff there that easily costs 5 times more than that.
      Look at Extraction. No one asked for that movie, there was barely any marketing for it at all up until a few weeks before release, and it cost around 65M according to wiki. And now they're already making a sequel.
      No one subscribed to Netflix just to see Extraction. But people who already subscribed may as well just watch it. And that's another thing, just b/c casual audiences aren't even aware of this Snyder Cut situation, doesn't mean they won't (wanna) watch it if they've already subscribed to HBO. HBO currently has like 140 million subs I think, and they get to watch HBO Max content according to this article. Those numbers are close to Netflix subs and Netflix literally spend BILLIONS on "original" content the last few years. As I said, 70M really isn't all that much in the grander scheme of things.

      Where is your evidence that most of their original films are closer to 50 mil than 10 mil? Movies like Extraction are the exception not the norm, and they don't do that constantly, they do it every so often to get in the news, it's as much a marketing tool as anything.
      I don't think it's a similar situation compared to an original film because people already have a negative attitude towards the film, and especially towards the director. You can say the GA doesn't know who he is but I think he is as well known as bay, especially because of hie DCEU failures.
      You're right 70 mill isn't that much. I still think there are smarter ways to invest it than on something this risky.

      There is a big big difference between 5 10m movies and 1 50 movies, streaming services want more content, that's why they scoop up so many films that have small budgets. That's exactly why they don't spend the same amount as Hollywood does on theatrical releases. They would absolutely rather have 5 movies for 50 mil than one movie. THAT is how streaming works.

  Whether or not existed you can say is semantics. What did exist was shot footage, in some cases test footage, with unfinished to non-existent visual affects and sound editing, visible props, wires, etc.
  That's what Snyder fans would have been fine with being released, so it's super weird to invest more than 30 million to make a brand new film 4 years later.

Cool, I have all that content on DC universe. Why am I paying roughly the same for 1/4 content.

HBO Max is the worst branding decision during the streaming wars. That being said, covid-19 equaled the playing field, now that Disney is struggling during the shutdown.

      Sure, all the media companies will play with the numbers to help their stocks. Disney own Hotstar because they paid for it and all the subs. WB owns HBO now, max etc... WB didn't buy them.
      As for D+, they plan to lose billions for 5 years and maybe make money at the end of that. We'll see when the free subs end and they raise monthly rates to $10 or even $15 like HBO.

      Disney owns star cause of their fox deal.They didn't go out their way to only buy Hotstar so they can flaunt their Disney+ subs in future.And, Even without Hotstar subs, Disney + is killing it.It should be 50 million by now even without Hotstar subs which is again crushing all the expectations.
      Source for Disney+ losing billions for 5 years?...As far as i remember, It was said that it will become profitable by the end of 2024 and that was before it crushed all expectations.Making a profit after some time on a investment and losing money on it every year are two different things.The reason Disney+ was said to be not profitable until 2024 must be cause of all the investment in infrastructure and original content which will pay off big time in future.

      First, Disney channel numbers i posted did not include Disney + numbers.And, Last time i checked HBO now had only around 8 million subscribers in 2019.So, 90% of that HBO 140 million sub numbers are from tv network and not from streaming service.

No TDK Trilogy? I'm not a fan of MoS but it should be on there as well. And I hope it's the UE version of BvS. At the very least it's a working movie. The theatrical cut should be banned from existence.

I'd really like to know what legal hurdles are stopping AT&T from rolling DC Universe into HBO MAX. Because, logistics make no sense right now. It's bad enough that they have HBO GO and HBO NOW, but to keep some of its best content on a separate service that nobody cares about is beyond imprudent. Thus, there have to be some agreements that prevent the complete merger from happening. At least for now.
