AT&T replies to Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad with 'One thing at a time'

With Zack Snyder's Justice League officially confirmed for release, fans have a new goal: David Ayer's Suicide Squad.

While not quite as famous as Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League, it is still fairly well-known that David Ayer was not happy with the final version of Suicide Squad. Over the years he has answered some fan questions about it, and even shared some photos here and there. Now, buoyed by the fact Zack Snyder's Justice League will be coming to HBO Max, fans are rallying around Ayer in a similar manner.

Not nearly as organized as the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement became, the #AyerCut movement is getting its bearings. With some people reaching out to AT&T - the parent company of Warner Bros. - it was a tad surprising that a seemingly official comment has already arrived. When presented with a tweet saying, "Complete the gift and @ReleaseTheAyerCut Please, please, please," AT&T responded with "One thing at a time."

A tweet from another fan commenting on that tweet said, "This always this @ATT #ReleaseTheAyerCut #HBOMax" and received a response of, "Anything is possible. All it takes is a little magic."

While both of these replies are still vague, they are at least an acknowledgment that fans still want another film. With outlets such as HBO Max in need of content, putting some money towards completing projects already in their possession is not the worst idea. Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, there is going to be a significant gap in completed productions, and writing a check to do some post-production may be an answer to that issue.

As AT&T said, however, 'one thing at a time.'

  The subtle difference between the line "oh, I'm not gonna kill you, I'm just gonna hurt you really, really bad" from the trailer and the one in the movie stands out to me. It's so much better, darker and psychotically delivered in the trailer.

    You had people complain that BvS was too dark, too serious or had too much of an angry vibe. And really, I don’t understand why people are so obsessed with the word “dark” or why being edgy instantly makes something better. Just make a good freakin’ movie, “dark” or not. I did not like SS nor did I like how it appeared in the first trailer.

Ayer himself has already admitted he was disappointed with what he did, regardless of the final version they went with. The villain and plot (not to mention Joker) were terrible and that's not going to change with better editing. Of course I'd be curious to see his original vision, but let's not pretend it will be any good.

  Watch toxic fanbases demand "directors cut" of everything now, even Marvel won't be safe from this, Ayer has supported the film what came out and has never begged the fanbase to release "his cut" so yeah can't see this happening beyond a generic "extended cut" to tie in with Gunn's film what may restore some of Leto's stuff. I may not like Ayer's choices but at least the guy can admit faults with his film, granted JL wasn't Snyder's film but never once has he admitted any fault with any of his films in the past, even Nolan has admitted faults with his films and has said there's stuff he would have done differently in hindsight.

    Yeah, that's always something I appreciated in Ayer and failed to see in Snyder.
    Ayer owned up to it and said "hey, maybe this wasn't my finest work, I should've done this better". Snyder has never done anything like that, and while I'm happy he's finally getting the opportunity to release "his" JL cut, it will always bother me how he handled and talked about the whole JL fiasco for the last 3 years. He constantly denied ever having seen the theatrical cut, yet at the same time he made fun of it for years. How can you make fun of something that you haven't seen? Never mind the fact that it was still mostly "his" film he was making fun of? Also, the way he has continuously insulted ACTUAL DC fans and mocked their complaints about BvS seriously rubbed me the wrong way. Saying they're "living in a f*cking dreamworld" for daring to suggest Batman not be a psychopathic mass-murderer is pure and unashamed arrogance on his part and it still amazes me he's defended for it.... or how he repeatedly ridiculed the "complainers" during his BvS livestream when we saw Batman outright murder tons of goons. You should NEVER insult your own audience, regardless what they think of your products. BvS, Gillette, Battlefield V, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, etc. There are so many examples of this, and the only way to regain the respect and trust of your audience is by actually admitting to your faults and releasing good products. Snyder has never done that, when he SHOULD have done so several times. It's one of many reasons why I find it hard to respect Snyder as a filmmaker. He never seems to wanna be the bigger man, and has repeatedly blamed others (studio/Whedon) for his crappy movies (Sucker Punch, BvS, JL).

      Why would he admit he messed up BvS if he doesn’t believe it? If he likes what he did and believes in it, he should stick by it. I like it and believe in it and stick by it, too.
      And when has he made fun of the theatrical version? I honestly cannot remember an example of this.
      And by the way, one does not become an “actual” DC fan by hating BvS. The 2 are not mutually exclusive.

        The fact that he doesn't believe it, despite overwhelming backlash is exactly what I take issue with. I'm sorry, but it takes a special kind of arrogance to persist you were right when basically everyone else except for a persistent minority says otherwise.
        BvS is a deeply flawed movie on so many levels. Both objectively (in a technical sense: pacing/editing, plot construction, writing/dialogue, etc) and subjectively (butchering of the Batman character most of all). He can think what he likes and that's fine... but to act like so many others (including dozens of damn near irrefutable analyses on the internet blowing the movie to shreds) don't have a legitimate point is why Snyder has routinely failed to improve as a filmmaker... and to add insult to injury, insulting his own audience will get him nothing disdain, and it's hard to say he doesn't deserve it.
        I have never once seen him own up to just how bad BvS was, or at the very least (in his eyes) how bad it was received. He seems more interested in making excuses, putting the blame elsewhere, ridiculing the naysayers and feeding his ego by only listening to his absurdly devoted fanbase than actually taking a step back and think to himself: "what have I done wrong here? what's my ownership in this? do they have a point?". It's like he dismisses all of that.
        He has routinely made fun of the theatrical cut on his Vero posts. Then saying stuff like "apparently it was that way in the movie, is this true?" to act like he hasn't even seen it. It's honestly just petty if you ask me.
        I'm not saying "actual" DC fans hate BvS. I'm saying he dismisses and ridicules "actual" fans of DC who criticized his movie, and from what I can tell, these fans understand the source material better than he ever will. I'll never "forgive" him (in a figurative sense) for saying "Batman kills all the time in TDKR" despite the fact that he killed zero people in the novel. That to me, proved he had absolutely no clue what he was talking about and at best, just looked at some comic panels and decided he had it all figured out. Snyder constantly says stuff that just isn't true and frequently changes his "tone"... going from "I don't care about mainstream comics" pre-MoS to "Superman is my favorite hero" post-MoS to "TDKR is my favorite novel alongside Watchmen" pre-BvS to "he kills all the time in the source material". It's just like dude... stop with the bs and just admit you made bad decisions as a filmmaker.

        Well said. The subjective stuff can be downplayed, everyone ha preferences, but it frustrates me when BvS diehards even defend the objectively bad, technical stuff. They generally have no knowledge about filmmaking so they just use "oh all film is subjective" as their argument - Finley does this the most.
        It's really a bizarre mental health issue IMO. Like, you could accept that it is flawed and still defend all the subjective stuff that you like, which is what most of us who dislike the film take more issue with anyway.
        Now I've seen then getting upset when people point out it's unlikely the snyder cut is going to make money, and they have to do mental gymnastics to try and comeup with something to disprove that. Like, why? You're already getting the cut, why do you need it to be profitable?

        And just on a side-note, I watched BvS UE again the other day just to see what I think now and what to expect from the JL cut and it just reminded me of so many things I hate about the movie... So many, quite frankly, stupid things that you'd think an Award winning writer would notice. Like the overabundance of boring subplots that make up the entire first hour of the movie JUST to set up how Batman got hold of Kryptonite and the Africa subplot which could and should have been replaced with the aftermath of MoS' events, terribly interjected Knightmare scene, whole set-up for the fight, the resolution, the insertion of Doomsday and how that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, the terrible JL easter eggs (especially how they're edited in the movie), OTT Lex performance, relentless soundtrack, lackluster action scenes except for the warehous scene, bad Superman/Batman characterization, direction of the story (instead of it being a battle of conflicting ideologies, it was a set-up motivated by blind rage), how the character arcs resolve also make no narrative sense, etc etc. I mean Snyder killed off Superman and practically no one cared. That's just unforgivable. When Iron Man died in Endgame, most of the theater was in tears. THAT is how you know your audience cares and is invested in the story. That's how we should react to Superman dying.
        I'm not here to debate the failures of BvS again after all these years. I'm just saying, BvS DOES have severe flaws, many of which are objective. And Snyder has not owned up to them and that's honestly just disappointing.

        I think for me personally its really just three things in particular. Batman characterization, Lex Luthor casting, and killing off superman. Make batman not a blatant killer(mostly just the gunning people down stuff, I can overlook something like the grenade in the warehouse scene tbh), a more traditional and not so over the top performance from Lex(different actor would be ideal), and instead of DDay have the end villain be Metallo or something that is just an excuse for the Trinity to come together instead of killing Superman. It would still be far from perfect. But I would at least be able to tolerate it

        Those are all good mentions, but it's also just so much more than that. They could've easily set up the Kryptonite stuff in the first 15-20 minutes of the movie, but instead it takes them one hour just because of this whole "White Portuguese" crap that is otherwise of no relevance to the narrative. Same thing with the Africa subplot. It wasn't necessary. They had to address the "black zero event" or whatever it's called, and used THAT as a narrative plot to get Superman to court and "answer" for his crimes. It would also work perfectly with the rest of the film, just have a random lady paid by Lex to invent some bogus sob story instead of the African one we see in the film, and it would also add with the whole "media war" against Superman. Those 2 things alone would have greatly streamlined the movie, especially the first hour which quite frankly, is kinda boring and badly paced.
        But the biggest sins for me were definitely the Batman characterization, the insertion (and butchering) of the Death of Superman storyline, including the wasted appearance of DD. I mean, if the fight was actually great (as in: brutal, hopeless, visceral, etc instead of the CGI, generic, stake-free mess we got in the actual film) and if DD looked awesome (and most importantly, if Superman was developed enough for audiences to ACTUALLY care about his death) then I could more easily forgive them blowing their load so soon with this epic comic storyline, but the execution was just terrible in every way.
        I always thought Bizarro would've worked a lot better as the "big threat" for the 3rd act. Just have him be called "B-0" like in the comics and that Zod's body was the final piece in the puzzle that Lex needed to create "his" own Superman. Would've made a LOT more sense than creating a planet destroying monster who would've killed Lex and everything else on Earth had it actually succeeded at killing Superman and lived afterwards. I mean, that's just outright moronic writing.
        Again, I'm not really here to argue why I think BvS sucked, I'm just saying, there are CLEARLY many flaws, and Snyder never once owned up to them.

        It's really stuff like this... things that are so insanely stupid yet should be ridiculously easy to spot... why I find claims of BvS being some "misunderstood epic" to be utterly laughable. I'm fine if people like BvS, but this is just blatant and unashamed stupid writing at best. I'm sure people would justify it by saying "Lex cared more about killing Superman than harming the planet", but that's just dumb. Lex is a narcissist. The last thing he wants to do is let the entire planet (including himself) die just to prove a point, especially when no one would be around anymore. And what was he thinking, creating DD in the first place? WHY???

        Yeah that bothered me too. My original thought was it was a fuck you to the government not sanctioning his K weapon development and perhaps he had one already made to use to save the world and further establish himself as mankind’s savior, not Supes.... but the second thought is that he had learned so much about the universe in that chamber and decided he wanted to be a part of Darkseid’s goal to master the anti-life equation. His ego could have been so strong he thought he could manipulate Darkseid, or he himself was just being manipulated by Darkseid.... So there are outs that allow me to accept his possible motivations, by filling in the blanks based on previous incarnations of Luthor. But I also totally understand how it can be frustrating because his motives are left vague or nonsensical. Zack is not great at story or pacing. Which is why a 6 part mini series of JL can work. TV shows aren’t held to the same pacing standards as films imo.

        If you were to say to him "Hey, that Knightmare scene completely shattered the momentum of the story, made a long film needlessly longer and was confounding to anyone not specifically aware of what Darkseid is", Snyder would just ramble about his 5 movie plan and go on and on about how that totally would have paid off if you weak fools had just obeyed him and allowed his natural genius to shine through.

        I really can't understand his mindset when THAT many people hated his work, and for good reason. One thing I will never understand is how he still believes he made some truly "masterful" pieces of arts. It's fine if he thinks he made some decent popcorn fliks but come on... you don't see Michael Bay acting like he's the next Kubrick in spite of all the terrible reviews he got making the Transformers movies. It's the lack of self-awareness on his part that I just find unacceptable. He takes precisely zero ownership over his failures. Ultimately, I don't really want to bring this stuff up anymore b/c this debate has been done ad nauseam but it is definitely interesting to see how both Ayer and Snyder handled their respective movies. I think Ayer ultimately proved to be the bigger man.

        Its why i rate Bay higher, Bay may make trash like Transformers but he's never once believed they were more then they are what is summer blockbusters designed to entertain, in fact the only thing Bay has been extremely critical with is the lack of Oscar love for the visual effects for his Transformers film and to be honest i understand that because visuals effects is something those films have always been 5/5 with.
        End of the day Snyder made the first film starring The Trinity with Lex Luthor and Doomsday as villains with cameos from The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman, that should have been one of the biggest movies off all time what made Marvel sweat yet Joker a really low budget r-rated film where Joker is barely in it crossed that billion, is loved by audiences and has won tons of awards including two very well deserved Oscars, also Aquaman of all things the big joke of DC for decades beat BvS by far what is truly hilarious.

      Were all of Snyder's choices bad? No? We're all of them good? Absolutely not! Has Snyder ever acknowledged even one of them? Most likely not. Snyder likes to subtly make himself out to be a genius of pure perfection and his idiotic cult lap it up. I'd respect Snyder a little if he ever said "yeah, the intent of the Martha scene was good, but the execution was absolutely awful". As well as him maybe saying "I maybe shouldn't have had Batman casually murder so many people. Also maybe my Superman should have been a little happier"

      Ayer is also humble enough to admit when he's made wrong choices like not making Joker the main villain, you won't see Snyder admitting that having those god awful lines said by Diana in BvS was a wrong move despite Gal herself and Patty not being a fan of it and distancing themselves from his take.

        I'd love to see Snyder agree with Gal and Party that making Wonder Woman someone who walked away from humanity was a bad call. Because making Wonder Woman a character who would never do that is one of many reasons why her solo film is so damn great and was so much popular with audiences than Snyder's movies.

It probably depends on how well the Snyder Cut does. Back in 2005 WB were going to release a darker version of Batman forever, so that's something I'd definitely pay for. Unlike these cuts, that thing is actually finished and only requires approval from WB to be released.

  Well actually the ayer cut already exist where the snydercut has to be shot and made so its very diffrent from. a director who just got it wrong the first time and did not accept it like snyder so he made everyone belive there was this whole other movie that he directed already but as we know that was bullshiii.
  what happend with suicide squad was the studio giving someone who makes edgy movie trailers creative control of editing the movie over the director and the movie ends looking like a bad mixtape instead of a actual film. So i find it hard to belive that at least there is not a version of suicide squad has at least a little less ''rainbow color jumpcut mama mia let me go''.

  While I agree it will probably still be bad, I wouldn’t say this is “taking a mile.” From what I understand about Ayer’s original cut of SS, it’s basically all complete (more so than Snyder’s JL), just cut and edited differently.

    There's also demands that Disney make Solo 2 now, yeah i've had reports of that pop up tonight. What i'm saying is here is now that WB have allowed The Snyder Cut to be an actual official thing the internet now thinks if it demands hard enough that any "directors cut", remake or sequel or whatever can happen now, Snyder Cut is a special case and despite what i've said in the past makes way more sense then a Ayer Cut of SS or a Solo 2.

      Fandoms are gonna fandom. This is nothing new. JL just had a particular set of drama surrounding it that caused a lot more uproar and traction (for good reason).
      Star Wars is facing plenty of drama right now too - pretty much since the new series started, fans have been in overdrive arguing and demanding much like the DC fandom.
      Personally, I kinda feel like Solo 2 deserves a chance. The reason they chose not to make it (or the Boba Fett movie) was because of the very same extreme kind of behavior that is now starting to ask for it. I remember all the complaints that 'no one asked for a Han Solo movie', and here we are.
      Same as the extreme whiplash from BvS caused them to butcher JL, The Last Jedi's response screwed over the following SW films. And now, like with the Snyder Cut, the vocal majority has become people with opinions mostly opposite of the original majority.
      As for SS, I think there are things that I took issue with that an Ayer Cut wouldn't fix, but I also think any improvements are very welcome, and we're still getting Gunn's movie anyway, so it can't really hurt anything or prevent forward motion like some seem to think.

  Look, the guy made Bright. And on paper, Bright sounded pretty interesting. A director with ANY vision and artistry would have turned that script into a great film. Ayer's entire career is a bunch of missed opportunities. In reality hes just an incompetent director in the same vein as Bay.

    It actually exists, as they were going to release it back in 2005 alongside Begins, but never did for some reason. Unlike these new cuts, this thing actually exists in a completed, edited, visual effect ready form. The only thing they'd have to do is press a button and we'd have it. No extra money or work needed.

    More than likely it was just him playing ball just like how the cast all said that Whedon was supporting Snyder's vision for JL. Ayer clearly had issues, but kept quiet until now.

I follow him on Twitter, and there would be where times he's talking about something completely unrelated to the film, and yet he'll get tweets criticizing him for sexualizing Harley and how the film sucked. Dude has reached his breaking point, and now wants to redeem himself and the film.

Here it is, folks. Batman News is now trying to be cool again by reporting on stuff it never would have touched before the 20th. I’ll choose to see this as a return to form and acknowledgement of past error rather than hypocrisy.
Also don’t forget that AT&T or HBO Max or all of them, really, have been teasing people in even more ways than is mentioned here on Twitter ever since the Snyder Cut announcement. “This is only the beginning.” Honestly, expect more, people. Might be over-optimistic, but there are some serious rumors about not only the Ayer Cut coming out, but a deal for MoS2 with Henry BACK, the JL story being continued, maybe even Batfleck’s movie returning, and more. This might turn out to be a very exciting time for the DCEU again...
- About the “Ayer Cut” -
I’ve never supported those of the Internet who have been trying to make this cut happen; David Ayer defended the theatrical version as his cut, and I really never believed there was much of anything different out there of Suicide Squad, not to mention the Snyder Cut was what I wanted to focus on more importantly.
However, I’ve read a lot of the stuff Ayer’s said about it, and it really would appear that there is some significantly different stuff out there, and he is certainly not defending the theatrical version anymore (backtracking or not), so why not? It seems it would be even easier to put together than the Snyder Cut, and the Extended Cut of SS was definitely better than the theatrical version (still a bad movie overall, but better), so maybe this could be even better than that? Maybe this could include my favorite scenes from the trailers that I waited to see in each version of the movie that had been released and was disappointed never to find.
I’m sure it will never be able to fix the movie’s biggest problem, Enchantress, but if it’s foregoing the studio-enforced reshoots, maybe that means less cringy forced humor, better editing and pacing, and other improvements. I’m sure it won’t make it a great film, but the more enjoyable, the better.
So bring it on! I’m down for releasing the Ayer Cut.

And, somewhat relevant to this article, I just want to address and put to rest a couple of common complaints I’ve been hearing a lot of here after the Snyder Cut announcement once and for all if I can:
1. To those of you critics, contrarians, or just plain haters who are salty or still obsessively hateful of Snyder and his fans - which thankfully appears to be only a few of you (and props to those of you like Seb who are happy with the film’s release even if you are not major fans of Snyder’s work and/or didn’t think it would ever happen) - stop. It’s done. The fight is over. You lost. You have finally been unequivocally, undeniably, and absolutely proven wrong all this time about it all, and the Snyder Cut fans have finally been vindicated after all these years of your abuse and false accusations. Justice is ours and Snyder’s. We won. All arguments, complaints, and desperate attempts at turning the tables from this point on on your part only look pathetic and embarrass you rather than validate or justify you. Just know when to quit. We were on the right side of history, if you will. So if you have the awareness and decency to give it up/lay down your arms/raise the white flag, then THAT is what will earn you respect, and we can all be on the same side again.
2. To all of those who are talking about how bad the movie’s going to be and how the Snyder Cut “fanboys/cultists” will never admit it, you can stop, too. Until anyone sees the movie, no one can know how good or bad it will be, but either way, you can still look forward to the movie’s release without knowing that information; there are plenty of good reasons to be excited by this huge occasion. And at the very least, we know that the film will probably be BETTER than the theatrical version, since, from the details and cast/crew testimonies that have been leaked thus far, it would appear that ALL of the most-complained about problems with the theatrical version are non-issues in this cut. It’s just a question of how MUCH better it will be, which, once again, we cannot know yet. Perhaps it WILL end up still being bad. But that will NOT mean this wasn’t worth it, because it was always about the principle of the thing more than anything. And if it is bad, yes - though there are definitely those of us who will admit it, too - there will be people who like it anyway. But so what? That will ALWAYS be the case, with EVERY movie. Let’s just be done now. Or just keep grumbling about it to yourself. It doesn’t matter, because IT’S HAPPENING. It’s TOO LATE NOW to change that. But most of you will surely dislike it no matter what, whether it’s good or bad, so the sooner you get over that now, the better you’ll feel about it by the time it comes out.
This event should mark the end of a very toxic era of in-fighting for the fan base. Let’s allow it to do so and put that stuff behind us. Please and thank you.

I understand Leto's Joker is very controversial but my main issue with his character wasn't his mannerisms, it's that he didn't contribute to the story or plot in any noticeable way in the theatrical version. He was undoubtedly given more to do and be more integral to the movie so any cut from David featuring more Joker doing Joker things would be most welcome, even if im not the biggest fan of a "thugaboo" Joker

I’m a need them to fix this too, this was another injustice done by WB , hiring a trailer company to edit the movie and take out a lot of cool tie ins to JL, and changing the tone from a BVS type of movie to a guardians of the galaxy type of movie smh. I believe they will give us the Ayer cut as well for the purpose of more content for HBO Max.
