Zoe Kravitz talks staying in Catwoman shape during a quarantine

Zoe Kravitz spent months getting ready to play Catwoman, and she's not letting something like a pandemic set her back in being ready to put the catsuit back on.

Shooting on The Batman shut down on March 14, and no one isn't quite sure when it will resume. Through all of this time, it would be easy for an actor to slip into some bad habits, and Kravitz was apparently aware of this.

Speaking with Vanity Fair about her Hulu series High Fidelity, Kravitz shared what she's been doing to stay motivated while being quarantined.

Yeah. So I mean, it's not like the studio called and said, "Don't get fat, bitch." But I had been training now for maybe four or five months and the first couple weeks that I self quarantined, I remember texting the director, I texted Matt and I was like, ‘We might have to make the cat suit a few sizes bigger when this is over.’ So I quickly decided to get my shit together and I've been working out virtually with my trainer David Higgins five days a week. And it's actually been really great because it's been giving me some kind of structure because I do it at the same time and it also makes the weekends feel like a weekend because I don't work out on the weekends and it gives me just, oh, it's a different kind of a day. So it's actually been really great just for my mental health. And kind of foods, kind of the only thing that I have, food and wine bringing me joy right now. So I'm definitely eating whatever the fuck I want. But yeah, try to stay in decent shape so I don't have to start from scratch.

Sounds like this is a motivation a lot of us could use right about now.

The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 1, 2021.

Good for her. I sincerely hope Pattinson takes this chance to keep motivated and undertakes to do a body transformation by getting stupid jacked for the role like Cavill did for Superman. Sure he can act but it would help get more respect from the fans who need to see the first post-Snyder Batman done right. This is literally one of the most coveted roles ever.

That's a good mindset to have but I honestly can't take the workout program for this movie seriously. With Zoe, it's not that important because female characters don't really need to be jacked, they just need to be lean and in decent shape (which she already is by nature)... But it's Rob I'm worried about. I've been complaining about it for months, and people haven't liked what I have to say about it, but recent pictures have all but confirmed by suspicions. The guy has basically put on zero weight and looks as thin and frail as he always has. Heck, I actually think he looks smaller than he was at his peak around 2-3 years ago.

People said I was overreacting and that he'd gain muscle, but he hasn't done anything like that... and given that Rob is naturally an extremely slim and lean guy, he NEEDED to. Can't say I'm surprised, considering he said multiple times he only started training 1-2 months before production and reports saying how he had issue putting on some weight. It's also why he looks so weird in the Batsuit. The stuntguy actually looks way better in it, because he actually fills out the suit, whereas with Rob, it looks super baggy and just all around bad. I know people will hate me for saying this, but I'm genuinely disappointed with the entire aesthetic of this film. Some parts are so bad imo, that it will be hard to overlook them because they stand out so damn much.

Don't they design two different suits for the actor and the stunt double? Either way it doesn't look particularly baggy at all to me other than the pants which are clearly supposed to look like that. More similar to Lee Bermejo's militaristic design than the typical skin tight look. And either way it seems the suit will hide most of his physique anyway like it did with Bale so unless we see him shirtless its not going to matter much...
He isn't going to get huge. Oh well. It is what it is. Idk why people are so deeply bothered by this. To me it seems this could be a much more performance heavy incarnation focused more on the detective and psychological aspects of the character than what we have seen before so the acting is the MOST important part I would say. Thats why Reeves cast Pattinson instead of someone who could get enormously buff.
People need to stop worrying about this stuff so much if you ask me. Personally I think the suit and the car look great. Wait until you see some trailers or better yet, the movie itself before forming such strong opinions I say. Not sure why I have to keep repeating this tbh...

  One of the problems is that Rob has broad hips (for a man) and rather shallow shoulders, which really accentuates the fact that he doesn't have that great a physique (he really doesn't have that masculine/hero V-line, and the suit really accentuates his more rectangular type of body as well). I'm extremely slim myself. I don't even have to work out and I have had single digit bodyfat percentages my entire life (which I consider to be more of a curse than a gift, but I digress), so I know what it's like and how hard it can be to put on weight with this type of physique, but unlike him, I have a broader frame (shoulders mainly), so it's all about working with what you have, knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and working as much/hard as possible. Oh and Bale was MUUUUUCH bigger, so I don't know where you're going with that.
  With his body/frame, he NEEDED to have started his training the moment he was cast (around 8 or so months before production). Even that wouldn't have been sufficient to even reach Bale's level, but it would have been enough to obtain a realistic BATMAN type of physique. But nah, he started training like a month or two before filming. That's not just inexcusable, but outright retarded and the idea that we either have to choose between acting talent and story quality or aesthetics and workout ethics is absurd. You can and should do both at the same time. This is not some random action movie, this is a film about a man who could singlehandedly take out dozens of goons with ease and has mastered damn near every martial art on the planet. If Reeves wants this story to make ANY damn sense, Rob HAD to be big... which he isn't.
  I'm not asking for a "super buff" Bruce Wayne. I actually prefer the leaner, more agile type of Batman... but this isn't that. This is pushover, scrawny, pathetic, wannabe Batman. It's a joke.
  It is simply too much of a stretch to believe THIS guy, a scrawny kid basically, is THE Batman, capable of besting any criminal with his bare hands. Just no.
  As for the rest, it's not that I dislike the car, I just think it makes no sense for this world, and the suit itself I mixed about. I'm okay with the upper body, I dislike the legs and boots, but I fucking despise the cowl. It's absolutely atrocious if you ask me.

    i think your descriptions of Pattinson's physique are a bit hyperbolic but whatever. Ya, I get it, batman should be beefy. But he's not. OH well. There is NOTHING you can do about it. So why worry about it so much? Why not just enjoy the film for what it is? Besides, Bruce Lee wasn't a humungous but he was...ya know...Bruce Lee.
    I was talking about Bale's costume hide his build. The only batman costume that actually made the actor look big was Affleck. Bale's costume made him look skinny

      Bruce Lee is one of the most overrated performers of all time, but even he was in much better (leaner, more cut) shape. You're right, there's nothing I can do about it, but it still annoys me and there's no reason why I shouldn't express that.

      Bruce Lee was a martial artist first and foremost and did put on weight because he saw the advantage of a much larger size. But noticed the bigger he got the slower he got.
      Bruce Lee for his time was amazing. He is somewhat overrated I agree to an extent, but the man is a legend.
      Anyways, yeah Robert needs to put on more size to literally fill this role.

      Affleck was in great shape, so was Bale, but I have to say Ben's suit didn't show off his actual body, it was just designed with padding and stuff to look like muscles under cloth instead of rubbery armor.
      It'll be the same here.
      That said, there is a level of respect toward the character that should be approached. He's not just beefy - he's someone who dedicates a significant amount of his life to being physically capable. He has to to survive doing what he's doing.

      He needs to be at least the size of Georges St Pierre or Luke Rockhold. Athletically big, capable of mixed martial arts and gymnastics. Just needs to be the size, no need for him to be actually good at fighting/gymnastics.

      as I have said, it is what it is. People have GOT to stop worrying about these things so much or at least wait until we actually see the movie to form such strong opinions. I feel like the only person on this site who practices this. I defended BoP a lot before it came out. Gave it a chance. Ended up not really liking it. So thats that. But thats besides the fact that this just isn't something that is going to ruin the entire movie for me.

      But Rob's size won't change. This is how he'll look, so it makes perfect sense to judge it already because nothing is going to change within the context of the film. We're not talking about story or acting, we're talking about Rob's physique.

      I just don't see the use in complaining about this stuff so much when there is nothing we can do about it. And in my own humble opinion, this particular thing isn't something that should ruin the experience for you. I just can't relate. Sure I think batman should be large. Its not that im disagreeing or anything. Im just not "worried" about it. Im FAR, I repeat, FAR more interested in the acting and portrayal of the character than I am with how muscular the actor is.

      I understand what you meant and you have a point in a general sense, but not when it comes to this specific thing.
      Does it "ruin" it for me? Maybe not entirely, but I wouldn't suggest it's "merely an aesthetic fault" either. Because his physique should represent what the character is capable of, and when I look at Rob, I cannot imagine this is a man who has trained himself to perfection, nor can I take him seriously as a vigilante who takes out countless criminals with his bare hands. I feel like I could easily take him out in a fight. That's completely the opposite of what Batman should look like. He SHOULD look intimidating and a huge part of that is his physique, and Rob just doesn't have it. He looks laughably slim. And again, I just don't buy the implication that we "have to" choose between looks and acting talent. You can and should do both. Bale did it, there's no reason why Rob couldn't have. He was either lazy or ignorant. Idk which is worse.

      While I have my stance on the subject, I am actually pretty flexible about it and I fully agree with you here. I can wish for the standard while still ultimately appreciating the thing for what it is, even if it doesn't necessarily live up to that standard 100%.
      Case in point being Batman 89. Keaton is still one of my favorite takes on the character easily despite not being buff, and despite some other unique elements. He's his own flavor of Batman and I love it.
      Pattinson is getting into decent shape even if it isn't as brawny as we've been spoiled to expect from these actors. haha :) I appreciate that.

      It's hardly fair to compare Keaton with Rob, considering Keaton played Batman during a time when it simply wasn't the norm or expected that actors physically represent the characters they're playing (in terms of muscles), especially if it was a dramatic actor and not some action actor like Stallone or Arny. But things have changed, and unlike before, actors have all the best resources available to them. Where Keaton had an excuse, Rob has none.
      And even then, I do feel like Keaton was actually bigger than Rob is at this point. Keaton was by no means big by normal standards, nor was he defined or anything like that, but I'm fairly certain that (proportionally at least) his arms, shoulders, etc were bigger in terms of circumference. Again, just looking at these recent pics, I'm actually amazed at how slim Rob is. His arms in particular are laughably tiny. He seems to have lost mass if anything. It's crazy.

I get the frustration, especially after seeing Batfleck fill out the suit like a beast (even with some padding that haters like to point out, he himself looked HUGE and added significant muscle definition, definitely a lot more than Pattinson appears to have done). But the thing I keep in mind is it really depends on the story their telling and the Batman he is. If he's supposed to be young and inexperienced, maybe they plan for him to grow into a more physically evolved Batman in the sequels, it's entirely possible it's part of the plan and it may even serve the narrative directly.
Taking it on face value alone, I agree that I don't like the Batman aesthetics I'm seeing so far and Pattinson doesn't seem to fill out the suit how I'd personally prefer him to, and regardless of the story it seems it's going to stand out negatively to me during the movie. That being said, story outweighs individual aesthetics for me, and until I know more about where Reeves is coming from with this film/story, I'm gonna do my best not to penalize the movie/Pattinson/Reeves/etc because, for all I know, the Batman aesthetic choices that I don't care for on paper are perfect in telling an amazing Reeves Batman story, I'll have to wait and see, cheers!

  Well, I never liked the Batfleck physique (in the suit) because the padding honestly made him look fat. I thought the stuntsuit physique, which we can see during the warehouse scene, looks so much better (or look up early costume tests, which was before Affleck put on so much weight. The proportions were much better then). I actually really prefer the "leaner" and "more agile" type of Batman over the "buffer" more "thicker" TDKR type of Batman... but this isn't that. This is scrawny Batman and it's a joke.
  If he's inexperienced (meaning, he isn't trained to perfection), then this Batman is an outright moron for thinking he's capable of fighting the entire Gotham criminal world with his bare hands. So much for this version being a "detective". I've got absolutely no patience or admiration for this approach, should it be Reeves' intent.
  And as for story... it's not mutually exclusive. You can have great story talent, writing, acting, etc AND be psychically worthy of the character at the same time.

You know though i wonder if him being smaller is an actual choice in that this is a Batman whose in way over his head and hasn't had that level of training that Batfleck and Bale's Bruce had, maybe a Earth One style Batman who lacks a lot of the stuff Batman usually has.

  well he wasn't a detective in that story. Maybe he switches it around and in this movie he is mainly a detective and not so much a fighter. Or maybe he relies primarily on stealth and gadgets. Bound to be pretty controversial if thats the case. Perhaps we should go into this movie assuming its more of an elseworld sort of thing like Joker.

    I go into every Batman story as it's own thing whenever it's a new creative team, regardless of if it's a movie, cartoon, comic, etc. I grew up mostly with Burton, '66, and BTAS, and then later stuff like Year One and Nolan, so this was just part of being a Batman fan to me - especially after I started really digging into the back catalog of comics.
    I don't think having a flexible interpretation has to necessarily mean 'Elseworlds', but I don't think 'canon' is as solid of a thing as most fans do. So many different angles and styles and writing types have been applied to the character that I honestly think it's part of the fabric of Batman.
    Certainly, flexibility has contributed to him still being relevant, unlike characters like The Shadow who have (sadly) faded away. (Maybe Sam Raimi will finally bring The Shadow back after Doctor Strange 2...)
    To me, each new take has it's own mainline canon, and they all have a ton of the staples in common, so the backbone (or spirit) of the thing is there. I respect that, so long as it's not *actually* dumb as opposed to merely not meeting my personal desires, which is a common mis-conflation.
    It's always going to be different, and I might be a fan of some choices and less a fan of other choices. No big deal, in my opinion. I welcome a more detective-focused Batman, even one who brawls a little less.

      and thats the thing. These movies aren't taking inspiration from any one comic or media in general. I mean if someone wanted to make a movie where batman wasn't a detective, would that person necessarily be "wrong" for doing so since that happened in one of the comics? Not to mention some of the most popular stories out there aren't canon or at least not entirely and take liberties with what had been done before

    Nah in Earth One he's pretty much on a revenge mission against the killer of his parents, he's not really about saving Gotham and its people until the end where he starts to see the good he can do. He's a pretty unlikeable Batman to be honest and all his training came from Alfred, his detective skills also about as good as mine meaning he doesn't really have any.

      To be honest Robert does need to, at least, look big enough as an athlete to be seen as capable of the things Batsy would be somewhat capable of doing in real life.
      Batman is the epitome of physicality, he is peak human. The best you can be physically. He is Captain America without the special roids.
      Robert should simply be, big enough. Like a gymnast or Georges St Pierre. He has a lot of free time now during this pandemic and if he doesn't want to take steroids like many other actors then now would be the best time to train.
