DC Announces Joker and Catwoman 80th Anniversary Specials

Both The Clown Prince of Crime and Catwoman are turning 80 this April and DC is celebrating the best way it knows how: with two oversized specials!

With so many characters celebrating milestones this year, and it only makes sense for DC to pull out all the stops for them. The Joker and Catwoman will each be getting a 100-page one-shot this April. The books will include a number of fantastic writers and artists, and have eight variant covers featuring the characters through the decades.

This 100-page Super Spectacular will feature a number of stories covering everything from terror to humor by hit writers: Brian Azzarello, Lee Bermejo, Paul Dini, Denny O’Neil, Scott Snyder, Tom Taylor, Jock, José Luis García-López, Mikel Janín, James Tynion IV, Riley Rossmo, and more.

Catwoman 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular #1

The book’s main story will be told by Ed Brubaker and artist Cameron Stewart as they return to their icon run in the 12-page story “The Art of Picking a Lock”.

If Burbanker and Steward returning wasn't enough to get you excited, Paul Dini will also be included with a story about "an exotic cat taxidermist who intends to add Catwoman to their collection!”

Between Wonder Woman, Flash, Robin and now these 2, we're getting 5 of these 80-page specials in the span of a few months after getting only 1 in each of the past 2 years. I'm sure they're gonna be filled w/ plenty of great stories, but I really feel like DC is only doing a bunch of these now because of how well Action and Detective #100 sold, which is hardly a good reason

That sounds absolutely ridiculous. It's been 80 years or 750 issues, so they're releasing them. Milestone issues sell in general and it's a great opportunity to get a bigger number of artists and writers to work with the characters.

The way I understand this, is they are always more supportive characters than real icons. Let's face it, When we talk about Batman franchise. What will firstly come to our mind is definitely Batman. But Then we will talk about his villains. Then Robin, Batgirl etc. Gordon and Alfred is always there but they are always second hand.

He's in the Top 3 in my opinion what is more or less fact with the other two being the Devil himself and Darth Vader. We just had a R-Rated film based on the Joker's "origin" with zero Batman and the Joker stuff not appearing until the final act and that film made over a billion and has 11 Oscar nominations, that alone tells you how fucking huge The Joker is. Fuck if Phoenix wins what i'm 90% sure he will that would mean within 12 years two actors have won an Oscar for the role of The Joker, that's crazy as fuck.

Batman, Joker and Catwoman. They are this franchise's own Trinity to me. I see people are asking why no Gordon or Alfred. Well, here is the thing, They are great supporting characters but I don't think they are icons. When we talk about Batman, besides Batman, his villains are definitely the most popular. And Joker, do I need to explain? The most iconic villain ever. Joker is not even the first big bad in Batman franchise, Hugo Strange was, but Joker is far more iconic than him.
For Catwoman, she is just very popular. You can't deny of all DC female characters, Catwoman is one of the most iconic face in DC If not the most since we all agree Wonder Woman is the female representative. I will say she is more iconic than Lois Lane because Lois Lane is tied as "Superman's girlfriend" for decades, but Catwoman is definitely much more than lover of Batman. And let's face it, no matter villain or hero, Catwoman is the earliest. Wonder Woman is created three years later.
So I believe Joker and Catwoman can represent Batman franchise. Gordon or Alfred, you just can't think they are independent enough to be their own character without Batman.

  I definitely agree Joker is not Catwoman can compare with, but I disagree that Ra's, Bane and all those villains born after 70s can be recognized by public that well. Nolan's movies helped, but they are still less than A-list higher than B-list situations. Two face also transformed to villain much later. In villains group, Penguin and Riddler are more recognizing. However, There is a period especially Nolan's trilogy time, they e get too much spotlight. Batman &Joker are definitely in every versions, so is Alfred, Gordon and Catwoman. But Gordon only has more characteristic in modern age, Alfred is always a supporting character that must have but don't affect the main stories. Then we have Catwoman, exists in each generation and she carried stories alongside with Batman

    Neither Selina has — ever — been the main villain/character in a Batman's major story, though: from “Batman Returns” to “TDKRises”, passing through “The Long Halloween” & — even — “Hush”, she has been — when & if present, considering also other, more iconic, classics — a significant supporting character.
    Furthermore, in my opinion, she has the possibility of standing-out exclusively maintaning herself on the verge/limit of villainy: otherwise, apertis verbis, she will never become a more iconic “helper” than Gordon, Alfred & Robin.

I disagree about Catwoman, i love Selina a lot but to the mainstream crowd well they don't really care to be honest. Michelle Pfeiffer is considered the last great Catwoman in film and that was nearly 3 decades ago, Halle Berry pretty much killed any chance of another solo film and Anna Hathaway while great in Rises never really came across as Catwoman. I'm really excited about Zoe Kravitz as Selina and she's actually who i'm most excited about seeing in the film but outside of people like us i don't think anyone really cares that Catwoman is in the film.
I will get a lot of hate for saying this but Harley is bigger then Catwoman now, she has two films, she has a pretty great animated show, she was a major part of the popular Arkham games, is very popular cosplay choice and has been for many years, she was the breakout star in BTAS (a show where Selina had no good episodes outside of Almost Got 'Im) and constantly has great selling comics what do far better then Catwoman comics. Selina is more iconic due to how long she's been around and the fact "Catwoman" is up there with Batman, Spider-Man and Superman in that everyone knows that name but Harley is more popular then Catwoman has ever been outside of maybe the West era and Burton era.

  I can use Superman as the example to debate with you. There hasn't been a pretty good Superman movie since Superman 2, and about actors, no one can be iconic as Christopher Reeve. Superman also hasn't been very popular since 21st century. As the Trinity, Batman's popularity beats Superman in miles and Wonder Woman started to be more and more popular. However, Superman is still the most well-known Superhero of all time. You can't say Superman is not iconic just because this character doesn't have enough good movies.

Justvery similar what you said about Catwoman, except fans, being iconic doesn't save his popularity. 2018 is Superman's 80 aniversary, but even DC has given up Superman. Batman has his own holiday and last year DC doesn't bother to light Bat signal around the world, then we look back Superman. He got nothing besides AC#1000. It's sad and true that Superman has not been who he was anymore, but Superman is Superman, no one can change that.

    But Superman still has a ton of relevance outside of films. He was popular in the Timmverse, has great selling comics where he's always a massive presence, Smallvillle lasted 10 years as a Superman "origin" story, he's a big part in the very popular Injustice games, he's getting a new TV show this year, he had a popular 90's TV show, he had a Superboy TV show, had some stunning cartoons in the 40's, he had a popular 50's show, MoS, BvS and JL like them or not are still heavy Superman films, he had a headless cameo in Shazam, he has loads of celebration stuff all the time, the Donner films are still widely popular and loved.
    Selina is no where near that level or had any of that level of success.

Using number to talk might be Superman's iconic over popularity used to be 10/10. Catwoman is 7/7. Now Superman might be 10/5. Catwoman might be 7/4. Superman is more iconic but it doesn't mean Catwoman is not a random name that people never heard about. Especially old generation, they don't need to remember Selina Kyle but they at least know Catwoman.

Especially older generation. You can ask them who is Harley Quinn, they are likely not know who you are talking about. Catwoman has been played by different actresses from generation to generation. Even someone doesn't care Superheroes at all, will still hear about Catwoman. That's the power of being iconic. Just like Superman is famous around the world. Catwoman is also very famous.     I'm willing to bet more people know the name Harley Quinn then they do the name "Selina Kyle". I think what you got remember is Batman villains are household names thanks hugely to Batman 66, around that period Joker was actually absent from comics but that show helped revive him (in fact the show saved Batman as a whole), characters like The Riddler, The Penguin and of course Catwoman became hugely popular because of it, the only Batman villain of that level who wasn't in the show is course Two Face, honestly though Catwoman is for the most part only slightly above them. Outside of Batman Returns though and Batman 66 name something where Selina is relevant to the mainstream crowd? I can't think because in her early time, Harley was just a second hand of Joker, then she went solo and now she barely comes back. Catwoman at least is in enough Batman comics so she is not entirely went solo. In other media, Margot Robbie is the first living action Harley Quinn, and Harley might be more popular because of it, but this is the only version. Just like Iron Man and Black Panther. Batman has several versions through generations, Joker has several versions through generations, who is the third most frequent? You need to be clear which Robin specifically. Dick Grayson is the only one that might be well-known in public. However, sidekicks are always in the second hand. Also, because DC wants those Robin be more independent, Dick along with other Titans has really shifted to his own things. Dick can leave Gotham, Batman can't.

Looking forward to both!

However...I admit one thing. Im actually not completely sold on Tom Taylor writing a Joker story. Don't get me wrong, he is an excellent writer and I loved his Alfred story...BUT...Its been pretty clear that he is NOT a fan of the Joker. You can see that on his twitter, and most of the time he has written the Joker it involves the Joker getting killed. He even mentioned once that he finds Harley Quinn to be a million times better when she is not with the Joker, which also explains the scene in DCeased with Harley killing the Joker.

Don't get me wrong, its perfectly fine to have an opinion, and I don't expect everyone to like the character. Its one of those agree to disagree things. But in some cases, when a writer writes a character they don't like....well...Tom King once said that he considered Penguin to be the worst Batman villain ever...and what happened during his run? When King wrote the character in that three part story? First issue involves Penguin being humiliated when put into Arkham, he implies that Penguin is no threat (Yes, in a fight against Batman, penguin is probably not a threat but still) And we also learn that Penguin was apparently Married to an ACTUAL PENGUIN.

Im just slightly worried Tom Taylor's story might involve something similar. Him using the story to show his personal opinion on the character. In some cases tough, when a writer writes a character they don't like, that can actually be a good thing, cause then the writer can write a version they like which can introduce new great things and add more to the character.

So...I admit. Slightly worried....but Im also happy to be proven wrong in this case. Taylor has shown to be a great writer so Im willing to give his story in this a fair chance.

I respect writers who either kill off or don't use characters they don't like/know how to write more than writers who butchers the characters' characterization to fit their narrative.   Oh, I agree that he is an amazing writer, but I also know nobody is perfect. I prefer it when a writer who doesn’t like a character simply doesn’t use them, because when you kill a character off its bound to piss some people off.

      In case of Injustice, I totally agree. Joker’s death is more or less what caused everything to go the way it did. With DCeased tough...after seeing that Joker/zombie/pennywise cover, seeing Joker like that was one thing I really looked forward to, and when he got killed off by Harley just like that? I found it very disappointing, but hey! Thats just me. Don’t expect people to agree.

        Well, Vader has been IN literature and actual comics for a while now. so I think we can count him in, even if he's not that iconic to the medium. Joker is definitely way more iconic than Vader in comic books.

  He's in the Top 3 in my opinion what is more or less fact with the other two being the Devil himself and Darth Vader. We just had a R-Rated film based on the Joker's "origin" with zero Batman and the Joker stuff not appearing until the final act and that film made over a billion and has 11 Oscar nominations, that alone tells you how fucking huge The Joker is. Fuck if Phoenix wins what i'm 90% sure he will that would mean within 12 years two actors have won an Oscar for the role of The Joker, that's crazy as fuck.

Batman, Joker and Catwoman. They are this franchise's own Trinity to me. I see people are asking why no Gordon or Alfred. Well, here is the thing, They are great supporting characters but I don't think they are icons. When we talk about Batman, besides Batman, his villains are definitely the most popular. And Joker, do I need to explain? The most iconic villain ever. Joker is not even the first big bad in Batman franchise, Hugo Strange was, but Joker is far more iconic than him.
For Catwoman, she is just very popular. You can't deny of all DC female characters, Catwoman is one of the most iconic face in DC If not the most since we all agree Wonder Woman is the female representative. I will say she is more iconic than Lois Lane because Lois Lane is tied as "Superman's girlfriend" for decades, but Catwoman is definitely much more than lover of Batman. And let's face it, no matter villain or hero, Catwoman is the earliest. Wonder Woman is created three years later.
So I believe Joker and Catwoman can represent Batman franchise. Gordon or Alfred, you just can't think they are independent enough to be their own character without Batman.

    I definitely agree Joker is not Catwoman can compare with, but I disagree that Ra's, Bane and all those villains born after 70s can be recognized by public that well. Nolan's movies helped, but they are still less than A-list higher than B-list situations. Two face also transformed to villain much later. In villains group, Penguin and Riddler are more recognizing. However, There is a period especially Nolan's trilogy time, they e get too much spotlight. Batman &Joker are definitely in every versions, so is Alfred, Gordon and Catwoman. But Gordon only has more characteristic in modern age, Alfred is always a supporting character that must have but don't affect the main stories. Then we have Catwoman, exists in each generation and she carried stories alongside with Batman

      Neither Selina has — ever — been the main villain/character in a Batman's major story, though: from “Batman Returns” to “TDKRises”, passing through “The Long Halloween” & — even — “Hush”, she has been — when & if present, considering also other, more iconic, classics — a significant supporting character.
      Furthermore, in my opinion, she has the possibility of standing-out exclusively maintaning herself on the verge/limit of villainy: otherwise, apertis verbis, she will never become a more iconic “helper” than Gordon, Alfred & Robin.

  I disagree about Catwoman, i love Selina a lot but to the mainstream crowd well they don't really care to be honest. Michelle Pfeiffer is considered the last great Catwoman in film and that was nearly 3 decades ago, Halle Berry pretty much killed any chance of another solo film and Anna Hathaway while great in Rises never really came across as Catwoman. I'm really excited about Zoe Kravitz as Selina and she's actually who i'm most excited about seeing in the film but outside of people like us i don't think anyone really cares that Catwoman is in the film.
  I will get a lot of hate for saying this but Harley is bigger then Catwoman now, she has two films, she has a pretty great animated show, she was a major part of the popular Arkham games, is very popular cosplay choice and has been for many years, she was the breakout star in BTAS (a show where Selina had no good episodes outside of Almost Got 'Im) and constantly has great selling comics what do far better then Catwoman comics. Selina is more iconic due to how long she's been around and the fact "Catwoman" is up there with Batman, Spider-Man and Superman in that everyone knows that name but Harley is more popular then Catwoman has ever been outside of maybe the West era and Burton era.

    I can use Superman as the example to debate with you. There hasn't been a pretty good Superman movie since Superman 2, and about actors, no one can be iconic as Christopher Reeve. Superman also hasn't been very popular since 21st century. As the Trinity, Batman's popularity beats Superman in miles and Wonder Woman started to be more and more popular. However, Superman is still the most well-known Superhero of all time. You can't say Superman is not iconic just because this character doesn't have enough good movies.

      Besides, people really care Superman less and less, too. Justvery similar what you said about Catwoman, except fans, being iconic doesn't save his popularity. 2018 is Superman's 80 aniversary, but even DC has given up Superman. Batman has his own holiday and last year DC doesn't bother to light Bat signal around the world, then we look back Superman. He got nothing besides AC#1000. It's sad and true that Superman has not been who he was anymore, but Superman is Superman, no one can change that.

      But Superman still has a ton of relevance outside of films. He was popular in the Timmverse, has great selling comics where he's always a massive presence, Smallvillle lasted 10 years as a Superman "origin" story, he's a big part in the very popular Injustice games, he's getting a new TV show this year, he had a popular 90's TV show, he had a Superboy TV show, had some stunning cartoons in the 40's, he had a popular 50's show, MoS, BvS and JL like them or not are still heavy Superman films, he had a headless cameo in Shazam, he has loads of celebration stuff all the time, the Donner films are still widely popular and loved.
      Selina is no where near that level or had any of that level of success.

        Superman is the most iconic hero. I use Superman as an example doesn't mean I'm saying Catwoman is in the level of Superman. Using number to talk might be Superman's iconic over popularity used to be 10/10. Catwoman is 7/7. Now Superman might be 10/5. Catwoman might be 7/4. Superman is more iconic but it doesn't mean Catwoman is not a random name that people never heard about. Especially old generation, they don't need to remember Selina Kyle but they at least know Catwoman.

    Also being iconic doesn't necessarily equal to popularity. Harley is extremely popular. It's true, but how many people who doesn't care Superheroes know Harley? That's the question. Especially older generation. You can ask them who is Harley Quinn, they are likely not know who you are talking about. Catwoman has been played by different actresses from generation to generation. Even someone doesn't care Superheroes at all, will still hear about Catwoman. That's the power of being iconic. Just like Superman is famous around the world. Catwoman is also very famous. Harley Quinn is only popular like some Marvel's characters. However, they are not iconic

      I'm willing to bet more people know the name Harley Quinn then they do the name "Selina Kyle". I think what you got remember is Batman villains are household names thanks hugely to Batman 66, around that period Joker was actually absent from comics but that show helped revive him (in fact the show saved Batman as a whole), characters like The Riddler, The Penguin and of course Catwoman became hugely popular because of it, the only Batman villain of that level who wasn't in the show is course Two Face, honestly though Catwoman is for the most part only slightly above them. Outside of Batman Returns though and Batman 66 name something where Selina is relevant to the mainstream crowd? The character prints money and always has and has evolved past just being a Batman character, come on 2 films and neither are Batman films. Catwoman is still just a Batman character though for better or worse. She's iconic yes but so is The Riddler.

        I never said Catwoman is in the Joker's level, but she is definitely the third most frequent Batman character in media. You keep saying how popular Harley is, but in comics, what classic Batman story she mainly carried? I can't think because in her early time, Harley was just a second hand of Joker, then she went solo and now she barely comes back. Catwoman at least is in enough Batman comics so she is not entirely went solo. In other media, Margot Robbie is the first living action Harley Quinn, and Harley might be more popular because of it, but this is the only version. Just like Iron Man and Black Panther. Those two holds the highest solo Superhero records, but will you just say Batman is behind them because of it? Batman has several versions through generations, Joker has several versions through generations, who is the third most frequent? Well, Catwoman might be the only one keeps appearing in Batman related movies or TV series. Even Penguin and Riddler missed for a while. Yes, in Nolan's trilogy time.

        Also, Harley Quinn is her only name. So people remember her as Harley Quinn. Names like clown girl, female Joker, that's not her code name, only a few people call her like that as a description. She is always just Harley Quinn. But Selina Kyle is actual name of Catwoman, but Catwoman is people's first memory. Just like you don't remember Bruce Wayne first, you remember Batman first. He is well-known so Bruce Wayne is Batman. However, some people might only know Batman. I met a person in real life . I told her that I like American superheroes and Batman is my favorite. Guess what? She asksed me Batman is "Bruce Banner" right?
        See? She knows who is Batman but she just doesn't really remember the real name of this character. But we don't talk about Bruce Wayne, we talk about Batman much more often. So Batman as the Superhero name is famous, that's enough.
        Catwoman is the same. Halle Berry still counts as one version's Catwoman, but she is no Selina Kyle. It means Selina Kyle always goes second like Bruce Wayne always goes second. Catwoman is the name that becomes iconic and well-known around the world.

In Superman's world, her and Lex Luthor are that franchise's neccessary. But just because Lois Lane is always in Superman's story, she is not a iconic female character? Come on, it's ridiculous. You can say Lois Lane is always a helper of Superman, but she is one of the most well-known DC female character. Also, let's talk about Joker, as a villian, he is always in Batman comics, then will he suffer just because he did not fully go solo, and his most famous comics are Batman comics, then he is not as iconic as Superman, Wonder Woman even Harley Quinn? Who dares to say that? A villian is a villian, you can't force a franchise's villian or femlae character to must exist outside that franchise.

  You need to be clear which Robin specifically. Dick Grayson is the only one that might be well-known in public. However, sidekicks are always in the second hand. Also, because DC wants those Robin be more independent, Dick along with other Titans has really shifted to his own things. Dick can leave Gotham, Batman can't.

Looking forward to both!
However...I admit one thing. Im actually not completely sold on Tom Taylor writing a Joker story. Don't get me wrong, he is an excellent writer and I loved his Alfred story...BUT...Its been pretty clear that he is NOT a fan of the Joker. You can see that on his twitter, and most of the time he has written the Joker it involves the Joker getting killed. He even mentioned once that he finds Harley Quinn to be a million times better when she is not with the Joker, which also explains the scene in DCeased with Harley killing the Joker.
Don't get me wrong, its perfectly fine to have an opinion, and I don't expect everyone to like the character. Its one of those agree to disagree things. But in some cases, when a writer writes a character they don't like....well...Tom King once said that he considered Penguin to be the worst Batman villain ever...and what happened during his run? When King wrote the character in that three part story? First issue involves Penguin being humiliated when put into Arkham, he implies that Penguin is no threat (Yes, in a fight against Batman, penguin is probably not a threat but still) And we also learn that Penguin was apparently Married to an ACTUAL PENGUIN.
Im just slightly worried Tom Taylor's story might involve something similar. Him using the story to show his personal opinion on the character. In some cases tough, when a writer writes a character they don't like, that can actually be a good thing, cause then the writer can write a version they like which can introduce new great things and add more to the character.
So...I admit. Slightly worried....but Im also happy to be proven wrong in this case. Taylor has shown to be a great writer so Im willing to give his story in this a fair chance.

I respect writers who either kill off or don't use characters they don't like/know how to write more than writers who butchers the characters' characterization to fit their narrative. (You know who I am talking about). Lmao
  That being said, let's wait and see Taylor's joker book

    Oh, I agree that he is an amazing writer, but I also know nobody is perfect. I prefer it when a writer who doesn’t like a character simply doesn’t use them, because when you kill a character off its bound to piss some people off.

    Still Im positive and if Taylor writes a great Joker story, then Im more then happy to be proven wrong in this case.

        In case of Injustice, I totally agree. Joker’s death is more or less what caused everything to go the way it did. With DCeased tough...after seeing that Joker/zombie/pennywise cover, seeing Joker like that was one thing I really looked forward to, and when he got killed off by Harley just like that? I found it very disappointing, but hey! Thats just me. Don’t expect people to agree.
