According to a new report, Colin Farrell is in talks to join Matt Reeves' The Batman as The Penguin.

Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. is in negotiations with Colin Farrell (Dumbo, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) to take on the role of The Penguin. There is no indication how deep into negotiations the parties are, but this would round out the three of the best-known villains said to appear in the film. He would join with Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as The Riddler. This would leave the rumored appearances by Firefly, Mad Hatter, and Two-Face left to be filled.

It would appear activity is ramping up on The Batman with rumors hitting just before this that Andy Serkis is in talks to play Alfred. With Jeffrey Wright finally being confirmed as Commissioner Gordon, it looks like all the pieces are falling together. Now we just wait for some confirmation.

The Batman is scheduled to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.

One of my favorite films to date is In Bruges. Colin is a superb actor, I’m all for this casting. I wonder if this means will get the British Cobblepot version? I hope so 🤞

    Well, that was in one continuity. In Telltale he had the accent because he moved and lived there when he was really young (although it's not specified his age)

  In Bruges sold me completely on Farrell as an actor. Since then it hasn't all been good choices, but he's been consistently great. I particularly love Farrell in The Lobster and Killing of Sacred Deer. He was criminally wasted in Fantastic Beasts.

    They surely aren't picking him because he looks like the character, and if they're looking for someone who's talented then there are other actors out there who are talented and could fit the role better.
    Kinda tired of directors and their "visions" that are completely inaccurate.

      But other than his height, there isn't really anything holding Farrell back from "looking" like the character. If he puts on the weight, has the right make-up and costume, he could look like the Penguin.
      If you want a tiny, overweight, hideous looking actor to play the penguin, you're simply never going to find anyone.

        i think the whole short fat guy thing might just be a bit too ridiculous for live action. The GA would never take a comic accurate Penguin seriously. And I admit, Ia m not even the biggest fan of it myself. Totally fine with a reinvention of sorts tbh

        Here we go with again with the "too ridiculous for live action". Same thing DCEU fans were saying about Steppenwolf being played by an actor in a helmet. "Helmets are ridiculous, a CGI demon makes sense".
        Then Marvel shows it's not.
        Nothing is ridiculous when it's well excecuted. Not even a talking Tree and Racoon next to live actors. And now you're saying not even a short fat guy can't work?

        admittedly I am not remotely married to how the Penguin is traditionally depicted in the comics as I am not a huge fan of it personally. So I am not at all bothered by this. Besides, skinny Penguin worked pretty well on Gotham. But they could also always re imagine him to an extent.

        Let me correct myself... you're never going to find anyone who fits that description and is also ridiculously talented as an actor.
        Both of those guys aren't even 10% as gifted at acting as Farrell. If I have to choose between looks and talent, I'll always choose the latter.

        Paul Giamatti is a great actor.
        Jonah Hill, even though he's dropped weight could still fit the rol.
        Toby Jones is good actor.
        Sean Astin, another good actor.
        And I'm not even a Hollywood casting agent. There are literally thousands of actors out there and you think there's not one who fits the role and is a good actor? That's just ridiculous.
        And sometimes fitting a role is more important than talent. Nicolas Cage is a fantastic actor and there's no way he would have been a better Superman than Reeve, who was a TV actor.

        None of them are better than Farrell, and you seem to think there's nothing more to Penguin than being fat and short(er).
        Yes, it's about more than talent... the person needs to "fit" the role, I agree. But that's not just the physical side. The reason Bale was perfect as Batman, is because he "fit" that role perfectly himself. Bale is extremely dedicated, keeps to himself, mysterious but also a bit crazy in real life. Those are all Batman qualities, regardless of his looks.
        That's why I like Farrell as Penguin, because I can totally see him pull off this spiteful, arrogant, disgusting creature that most of all, is just jealous of Gotham's favored family (Wayne).

        Paul Giamatti is arguably better. He's won a Golden Globe just like Farrell, but he's also won an Emmy and is an Academy Awards nominee. I think he could fit the role better, although I'm sure there are other options.
        Sure, Farrell can pull it off, but so can many other actors. To me it's just a weird choice.

      Prosthetics don't look as realistic as an actual fat body. Even fat Thor looked fake as hell. It's just not the same. Why completely transform an actor when there are other great actors who have the correct body type?

        Well, I could say why limit yourself to only fat actors when you can cast anyone you want and cover une make up if needed. Which, by the way, when done right, it can look very, very, very good and realistic as hell.Just look ar Gary Oldman as Churchill, Charlize Theron in Monster, Bale in Vice...
        So it's not pointless, its actually silly not to consider skinny people cause make up is so good

        Charlize and Bale actually got fat. Even in Darkest Hour prosthetics were evident. They simply do not look like the real thing. Not to mention Farrell is too tall for the rol. They would have to completely transform him.
        Yeah, with makup and CGI anyone can play anyone these days, but it's kinda silly when there are actors who can fit the rol perfectly. This casting feels completely random.

    He won't gain weight... His voice doesn't match, the way he acts doesn't match, his face doesn't match, his voice doesn't match. Anything about it is innacurate. I'd prefer a fat Andy serkys as the penguin. C'mon what's wrong with you guys. Collin always play the sensible typeof guy. All his roles have that in common. I can clearly see a troubled Harvey dent but Penguin?? Gotta be kidding me

      I'll have to agree with you... I'm also finding it hard to see how this would work. Nothing about him says "Penguin"... But if there is one thing I know for sure, it's Warner Bros will do anything they can to make sure this movie is as good as possible because saying a lot is riding on the success of this movie would be an understatement.

      Telltale Batman is hella fun, I'm playing through it again. I seriously recommend it (especially "The Enemy Within" sequel) but you'll have to open your mind to variance in particular Batman characters. I will say, Jim, Alfred, and Catwoman act pretty standard though. I've come to like what they did with the Penguin and the Harley Quinn of Telltale is the ONLY iteration of her I like.

        He really captures the look of Lex from stuff like Superman: Birthright. There’s actually quite a few inspirations from that story in the DCEU. For some reason Disqus hardly ever lets me upload images, though, so I’m having some trouble putting them in my comment right now.         There are several depictions of him in the New 52 and elsewhere that look just right, too. Birthright is just the most obvious inspiration of a number.
        Michael Rosenbaum gets lauded regularly as one of the best Luthors yet by folks around here, and yet he looks SO far from the character.
        He is not the most commonly depicted Luthor, that I can say. But he is just as valid of one, and, storytelling-wise, his fits better than the super masculine look, anyway, on several levels.

Maybe they're aiming at the Emperor Penguin/Ignatius Ogilvy character rather than Cobblepot. Whatever it may be, this is good news, he's a fantastic actor.

The comics and many of their adaptations are classics for a reason. They don’t need to be drastically altered to be good.

    How true is that, I wonder, honestly. Year One, for instance, sure it deviates in some ways from a lot of the Batman stories that came before it, thematically and storytelling-wise, but also one of the big reasons it was such a success was - like TDKReturns - because it was intended to get back to the core of who the character is and the spirit of the original comics, which were much darker and serious. So, really, it’s great because of how it so deeply understood these classic characters and stayed true to that.
    And as for adaptations, the best of those usually are so good largely because they stay true to the source material. BTAS, TDK Trilogy, etc. all maintained integrity to the spirit of the comics. The comics are really the only place that is allowed to make radical changes, canonically, but even a lot of those changes are rightly not well received and thus reverted back, as with what they tried to do with the Wally West character.

      Every single piece of Batman media you mentioned changed significant aspects of The Batman mythos, minus his parents being killed by a lone gunman and dressing up as a Bat to fight crime. Based on what Reeves has discussed regarding these films, it's not like he's changing the spirit of who Batman is. However, he may be making changes that fit his vision and will push the boundaries of what we think of as Batman and subsequently ensure the longevity of the character. To be averse to that is ignorant.
      And this applies to everything. Change is necessary. Things evolve.

  I see your point and I agree. I don't like the identity politics at work in the casting but I'm gonna wait to see what everyone looks like in costume before I disown the movie. If they do some wacky take on the Penguin in which he is totally different from how he should be, we riot.

You know great casting decisions always involve a risk like the heath ledger for joker or ben affleck for batman so im all in for the creators making risks when casting but there are know like 5 worrying castings for big charecters alredy so this movie has me worried but at least you have one rock solid casting in the riddler so there is some hope at least

        I'd have to be in the minority RE: Clooney. Like Schwarzenegger, I have never seen Clooney as anything more than the flavour d'jour at the time, crowbarred into the role because of his star power.
        A good actor with a good chin, no doubt, but lacking that off-kilter, slightly crazed edge that Bale, Keaton and even Kilmer had. He has a picture of Batman in his office as a reminder to never take a role just for the money, which indicates he had no organic, artistic interest in or respect for the role.
        I do sympathise with Leto to an extent. He tries way too hard in the few minutes he had in the Joker role, but the aesthetic and the characterisation by Ayer was equally to blame.

      Oh yes, like you, I was querying the necessity of a Joker origin, and it turned out great. But the concern with The Batman is the casting, not the existence of the entire thing. We all want more Batman, and we want it done right. This comes across like it's being done on the cheap, and on the back of a bad acid trip.

        Yeah but that's my point. Whether it's about the movie or casting, we have no idea what kind of script they have. Maybe Colin is the best choice for the story they're going for. Even if it's not at all like the comics, it still has a chance to be good, like Joker. So I think it's too soon to judge it. And Colin is one of the better actors out there. I don't know what's bad about it other than he doesn't look like Penguin which can be fixed with makeup and CGI.

        I read it. I just don't wanna get into it. But lets just say I agree with the second half. I'm pretty sure Kerk and I mean DCEU when we say DC.

    Henry Cavill is Superman straight out of the comics. Ben Affleck was that for Batman, too. Lawrence Fishburne is a phenomenal actor. Amy Adams is a huge star. Gal Gadot has proven to be a definitive Wonder Woman. Jason Momoa is great as Aquaman. Most everybody liked Ray Fisher as Cyborg. Joe Manganiello was straight out of the comics Deathstroke - even had the perfect voice. Will Smith as Deadshot was an amazing catch. Jai Courtney pleasantly surprised literally everyone as Captain Boomerang. Margot Robbie is HQ straight off the pages. Viola Davis is Amanda Waller straight off the pages. Ezra Miller, while not ideal for Barry Allen, was still really popular with the general audience. Jesse Eisenberg I would still argue is a fine Lex Luthor both in appearance and portrayal. Willem Defoe as Vulko is an amazing catch. Jared Leto could have been a great Joker given the chance.

And then that continues going outside the DCEU, too - Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix made phenomenal Jokers, Christian Bale was a great Batman, Gary Oldman was Jim Gordon straight out the comics, Morgan Freeman was perfect as Lucius Fox, Aaron Eckhart acted his freaking pants off as Harvey Dent, Michael Keaton looked nothing like Batman but still managed to make it into the hearts of millions of fans as the definitive version of the character through sheer acting ability, Christopher Reeve is an iconic Superman, Brandon Routh actually was great in the role as well despite a lot of people not liking his movie much, many consider Ryan Reynolds perfect for Hal Jordan even though they didn’t like his GL movie, Mark Strong is Sinestro straight off the pages, etc.
    DC has a very consistent track record of great casting

    Warner Bros and DC seem to be very hit-and-miss when it comes to Batman. You take a step forwards with Burton's work then a massive step back with Schumacher. Take another big step forwards with the Dark Knight trilogy, but then screw up the DCEU by aping Marvel, and let Synder ruin the inaugural meeting of Batman and Superman. Take a big step forwards with Joker, then come out with some of the random and even divisive casting choices for the next Batman movie. They only seem to learn the hard way.

Why tho? I don't get this casting decisions. There have been some wonderful ones and other quite weird. Why is so hard for studios and directors to make something comic accurate?

  cuz "comic accurate" doesn't always work. Penguin is a pretty goofy character imo. Always felt it would be difficult to make the whole short fat guy thing actually work in livea ction

had a hunch that the whole short fat guy thing was just too ridiculous for live action. Skinny Penguin worked in Gotham apparently. Also worked in Telltale. Don't see why ti can't work here. Pass. Farrell is good. But I feel there's better out there for Penguin.
Andy Serkis can work, Tim Roth, Timothy Spall (wish he was younger), Brendan Gleeson (wish he was shorter), Ray Winstone (wish he was shorter), Reeves must not want Josh Gad...
