Joker becomes highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time

As of Friday, Joker has found itself with a new record. Globally, the film has now grossed $788.1 million, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. The previous record-holder was Deadpool with $783 million.

The breakdown so far is $258.6 million in North America, and $529.5 million from the various foreign box offices. The film looks set to cross $800 million by the end of the day, and analysts are currently pegging it to finish up around $900 million.

Warner Bros. is expected to walk away with a profit in the $450 million range, while another 25% will go to Village Roadshow, and the final 25% stake going to Bron.

Ryan Reynolds, the star of the Deadpool movies, took to Twitter on Friday to congratulate the team behind Joker on its breaking the record.

Reynolds didn't hold back, but it seems appropriate.

With a fairly lackluster slate of new films this weekend, Joker is expected to regain the top slot in its fourth weekend in the U.S. and take in around $20 million.

I know I'll get a lot of hate for saying this, but he tries way too hard to be Deadpool irl... kinda like RDJ constantly has to act like Iron Man. It feels so fake and unnecessary.
Not saying he's a bad actor, and he's great as Deadpool; but he's seriously nowhere as funny as he thinks he is. This tweet just screams "look how funny I am".
Idk what it is, but it rubs me the wrong way, lol.

    No, not really. Both had traits of these characters for sure... But RDJ especially completely went overboard after the success of Iron Man. If you look at how he was before, he wasn't ANYTHING like Tony Stark.
    Ryan wasn't as bad, and yes he also had some of those Deadpool traits, but he wasn't trying to get everyone's attention with every fucking little thing he says. Now it seems like he feels as though he constantly has to "live up" to the character people expect him to play. It's so fake.

      That's because people love it, yeah he plays it up to it because he knows people love him doing this stuff. When millions of people are loving you acting like your character in real life why shouldn't you do it? Also check out his interviews prior to Deadpool even being a thing and he's pretty much the same as he is now, the only reason we see and hear it more is because RR is at peak of his fame and popularity while prior to Deadpool he was box office poison and wasn't that loved, i remember people getting bitchy when it was announced he was playing Deadpool because they still had that GL and Barakapool view of him, nowadays he's near universally loved especially when he's with Hugh Jackman.

  Goldlum is genuine, but RDJ really went overkill with the whole "I'm just like Tony Stark" shtick, especially after the first Avengers. He's clearly dialed it down in recent years. But a couple of years back, he was literally begging for attention, and Ryan is no different if not worse. RDJ seemed to only do the whole "I'm Tony" thing at talkshows, panels, or big events like Comic Con... he usually was his normal self during 1 on 1 interviews. But Ryan literally does it constantly. It's so dumb.

      Lmao No, I'm not even going to acknowledge review aggregates of "professional" critics, many of whom wore their absurd political bias against the movie on their sleeves.
      And aggregates for general audience reactions are also a bit skewed, since many of those voting would rate a relatively "feel good", sentimental movie like Endgame higher than a disturbing gaze into the abyss, like Joker, simply due to their own emotional "enjoyment". Bleak horror films, for example, no matter how great they may be, don't get the highest audience scores either.
      I could GUARANTEE YOU that
      if Taxi Driver, as another example, were released today, it would be getting the same treatment as Joker has from the media and similar "scores".
      Do you also think Endgame is a better movie than Taxi Driver? Lol

      Joker is a "rip off" of Taxi Driver?
      That kind of statement demonstrates an utter lack of understanding of both the film and especially a broad ignorance of wider cinema, in my opinion.
      The critics today would certainly have the same complaints about that film, however, and many others.
      Go ahead, read all the idiotic reviews, many of whom make their point in the title, about "Angry White Men this and that", "irresponsible", "glorifying evil", "too dark", etc. etc. from these simpletons, many of whom gave a movie like "Ghostbusters 2016" a glowing review.
      I had a good laugh at the ones that came across my media feeds.

Speaking of which, WB now have an untitled event film date for April 16, 2021.I expect, It to be either Shazam 2 or BA as last Shazam movie was released on March 15.

    An event film is a big budget movie.And, The only two big budget wb movies which doesn't have a release date are BA or Shazam 2 and both are expected to start filming next year.Shazam was released on March 15, 2019 while the date wb booked is April 16, 2021 which is only a month later than March.WB can't release Shazam 2 in march 2021 cause of stiff competition with untitled live-action Disney film releasing on March 12th, Tomb Raider sequelreleasing on Match 19th.Also, Mortal Kombat, Masters of the Universe, The Boss Baby 2releasing in the same month.While only big movie that will launch in April is Fast and Furious 10 and that will release on April 1st.Then, The kids are growing up so they need to release Shazam 2 soon.
    If Shazam 2 and BA doesn't get released in 2021 then that would mean both will be released in 2022 as both will start filming in 2020.WB probably wants to avoid that.
    If i have to guess then i believe Shazam 2 will release on April 16, 2021.As it makes no sense to do a BA movie before Shazam 2 and Shazam 2 script is already being written.

I think a Lex Luthor psychological thriller will be the best follow-up to Joker.Audience doesn't know much about Deathstroke.

I'm think they will bring Arthur Fleck Joker into The Batman and here's how they can do it.
At the end of movie, in Arkam, an orderly wheels in a drugged up person in a straight jacket in front of a tv. The camera is behind the 2 people, focused on the TV show a newscast of a man dressed as a bat. Cut to Arthur's face change from emotionless drugged up to excitement. The End. This scene is lifted from Dark Knight Returns.

The problem is the age difference between Joker and Batman (Bruce can't be older than 10 in the film, and Phoenix is in his 40s). The only way it could work would be to confirm that the whole thing was one of Joker's "multiple past" tall tales. When he escapes from Arkham, Batman is already fully formed and it may not even be the 80s. That would be quite the mind bender, but Phillips has said it wouldn't be happening.

  The CHARACTER is implied to be in his early to mid-30's in the movie, and Bruce could be up to 12.
  The age difference is just fine.
  Not to mention, Joker very often appears to be more aged than Batman and we usually have no idea of his real age.
  It's very possible, if WB wanted it to happen, but I very much doubt they would potentially derail this successful standalone R-rated franchise by entangling it with the wider DCEU (or whatever they're calling it now) especially if Todd Phillips is set against it and he's considering a sequel.
  Dumber things have happened though...

  If 52-year old Jack Nicholson could fight Batman in Batman 89, then there's no issue with Joaquin Phoenix doing it as well (the "character" of Arthur Fleck is in his early 30's according to the screenplay - which means that in 20 years, Bruce will be 28 years old and be Batman by then and Arthur will be in his early 50's).

They probably won't.
More likely they'll continue Joker as the protagonist of his own successful R-rated franchise.
HOWEVER, since The Batman takes place in the 90's, during the early years of the DCEU Batman, and Joker takes place in the early 80's, the timelines match up PERFECTLY.
It would certainly be possible but, again, I doubt they would want to entangle this Joker in the wider DCEU. (or whatever they're calling it now)

      "Soft reboot" means they can keep the continuity they want, and leave behind what they don't.
      Until they explicitly state that this is no longer a prequel to the DCEU Batman, I'll still see it as such.
      Why else would they set the film in the 90's, for example?
      Furthermore, the filmmakers probably have a "colorblind" sense of casting for the role and don't consider casting a black man as Gordon to be a big deal from their point of view, anymore so than a different White actor taking over the role from Simmons.
      Batman Forever, for example, was both a sequel and soft reboot, and they changed Harvey Dent's race, obviously.

      Because Todd Phillips specifically wanted the period New York-style look and feel of classic Scorsese movies like Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy to tell his story, both of which Joker pays plenty of homage to, when this movie was conceptualized as the first of DC's mature one-off "Black Label" films, with Scorsese himself originally producing.
      The 90's aesthetic, however, of places like New York and Chicago are really not much different from today, there would be very little point in specifically setting the film in the 90's if it wasn't still a prequel.
      And if Matt Reeves wanted to emulate the style of Tim Burton's Batman or Batman The Animated Series, which I very much doubt, he still would not have to specifically set it in the 90's, because those are mixed, anachronistic, fantasy settings that don't exist in any one time period.
      Gotham had a similar mixed-decades timeless fantasy setting.

      The WW movies were always going to be prequels.
      Even the first WW, produced at the height of the DCEU push, has very little connection to the DCEU, as a film.
      After the box office failure of Justice League and the success of WW and Aquaman, the focus is on letting characters evolve through their own movies for now, but it's only a matter of time until the next team-ups.
      You can be sure the bean counters at WB aren't going to throw away all the connective tissue of the DCEU after seeing the success of Marvel films like Endgame.
      Just look at it as flexible continuity, the same way DC's continuity has altered, contradicted itself, reimagined events and changed course several times in their comics since "The New 52", while still sharing an overall continuity.
