Robert Pattinson is finally opening up about what it is that lured him to take on the role of Batman. And it may not be the reasons you expected.
Speaking with the New York Times in a wind-ranging interview, the topic of his casting as Batman inevitably came up. Pattinson was asked about his skepticism of actors playing heroes and how that aligns with playing Batman, and it's a pretty easy explanation. "Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong. I think it’s because one of my eyes is smaller than the other one."
But it's more than just being a little wrong, Pattinson went on to add, "I love the director, Matt Reeves, and it’s a dope character. His morality is a little bit off. He’s not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character." He added, "There is a simplicity to his worldview, but where it sits is strange, which allows you to have more scope with the character.
Pattinson was asked about his recent turn from art house films to blockbusters with his current work on Christopher Nolan's Tenet, and then moving on to Batman. "With “Batman,” if I’d done it a few years ago, I would have been incredibly nervous, but I’ve still got a few months before we start shooting. Plenty of time to have a panic attack!"
Pre-production work continues on The Batman with casting currently under way for the films villains. Zoe Kravitz was the first actor to secure one of the villain spots and will be playing Catwoman in the film.
The Batman will hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
