Birds of Prey trailer - Mayhem abounds

At long last, the first full Birds of Prey trailer has arrived, and we're getting a proper look at the movie.

The focus is very clearly on Harley (Margot Robbie) in this first trailer as she is known by general audiences, but there are some definite hints to background on Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). There's at least one shot of a younger woman in a church which suggests to us we'll be something about her origins.

Beyond that, this trailer is just pretty much pure color and energy from start to finish. We do get a quick reference to Joker, and beyond that it feels like its own story. What exactly that story will be isn't clear yet, other than Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) is after all of them.

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will be the first appearance of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn since Suicide Squad. She will be joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the Huntress, while Jurnee Smollett-Bell will be playing Black Canary. Rosie Perez will be playing Renee Montoya, and Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain as well. And Ewan McGregor joined the cast as Gotham City villain Black Mask.

The Birds of Prey movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 7, 2020.

This looks amazing. Can't believe people were judging based on posters, and to be honest if it wasn't for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn this movie wouldn't be made or anyone would go see it. Cannot wait.

eh, I liked it. At the very least it has a distinctive style and feeling, I think it can resonate well with audiences like Suicide Squad did, and well, Margot is going to appeal people both for herself and her character
Edit: oh, and the details of the posters paying homage to classic Harley stuff are a nice touch too!

Oh well, at least it's not as bad as the the Batwoman CW trailer.
It really IS just like the Deadpool movie, where even the villain is only obsessed with the main character. (I bet there would be some purists who will get super pissed that they turned Cassandra Cain into Dopinder)

  That and they made Black Canary black. Because we needed another black superhero with "black" in there name. I said Black Canary is traditionally a largely costume-less character. Race swapping is stupid. Canary is recognizable by her hair color, race, and style. This hipster black chick doesn't invoke her at all. Now they have fat dorky asian Cassandra Cain. And a washed up geriatric playing Renee Montoya.

  If you want to fill yourself with rage over a trailer for a movie that looks like goofy lightweight fun then go for it. Get angry. Get so angry that Warner Brothers hears you and promotes you to make your own movie.
  Me personally, I'm intrigued (mainly due to how great Margot Robbie is). There's every chance this will be awful but it already looks far better than Suicide Squad.

      I'm pretty sure Huntress and Canary will talk in the movie. The fact that they don't talk in a two minute trailer doesn't mean they won't find time for them in a two hour movie.
      I see this trailer as being like a back door pilot. Lure people in by emphasizing Harley and then spring all the other characters in the movie.

        I just watched the trailer with 3 friends in our DISCORD server and they asked who the fuck are the other 2 girls and the asian kid. From the posters and right now the trailer we know its a Harley movie, and again, everyone knows who's harley quinn you don't need show her 90% of the trailer.
        Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the trailer / movie / marketing of the movie, I just think they are losing a giant opportunity to make this epic.
        Also if this is going to be 16 or 18+ why Black mask is crying in a corner? I want to fear black mask not laugh at him. Right now I fear more harley than him, cause we already know she's a psycho.
        Looks like they made a new remix for "HEADS WILL ROLL" song teased on the leaked teaser. I hope we hear it on trailer 2 or 3.

        I can imagine a lot of people need refreshing or establishing who Harley Quinn is. She's appeared in a grand total of 1 movie.
        If you remember the Dark Knight trailers, the early footage focused entirely on Joker, to the point that characters like Rachel or Harvey didn't even show up. Then in the later trailer we saw the other characters.
        Movie marketing 101 is you start with the thing that the audience will immediately understand and then build up from there. Harley is someone audiences have some familiarity with, and even if they don't, her motives are pretty clear. She's fresh from her Joker relationship, newly liberated and crazy. Boom. That makes sense to people. Taking time in the first trailer to establish the other BOP players would be crazy. I will admit the fact that Harley literally dominating the posters is weird, but hardly a concern.

      Black Mask is a generic mob boss villain with a gimmick. He's someone WB throws in when the villain isn't super unique or key to the story in the way that the Joker or Brainiac might be. He's like a mid-level boss version of the Royal Flush Gang.

Ok, the film has its own style, I'll give it that. I think its good DC has all this different tones in their films and not just sticking with the same formula that Marvel has used until boredom. The stuff with the hyenas I liked very much... but the film still looks "meh!", and I'm still not digging the premise. I still don't like the costumes. I still think Cass was a missed oportunity and both the casting and the "story" so far regarding her character are crap. I don't have an opinion regarding Huntress or BC, because there is not much to be seen (and likely there won't be in the futre either). And Black Mask's portrayal is still crap IMO
The film no doubt will appeal to some people, and I seriously doubt it will be a flop. Not a great success either, but it would probably have shazam! nombers. As for the RT score, as I said in another article, it seems that nowadays, racial diversity, girl empowerment and gay characters are more important than the actual quality of the film itself, so I wouldn't be surprised that these facts, added to the lighter tone of the film, will make the critics give it a 85%-90% score

No one shares your opinions about essentially all superhero movies besides BvS except you, whether they’re on your side about BvS or not. So I think it’s highly debatable if you have actually accurately predicted anything, much less that you can use that as any kind of objectively recognizable proof that you’re right in this case...

My only questions at this point are really why is Black Canary black and where’s Barbara Gordon? Other than that, though, I think I’m down for this. Should be cool!

Black canary looks nothing like the comic book version; I still dislike HQ's golden costumes, BM doesn't even have a mask and doesn't look menacing at all. I can ignore the "dick pics" rumors and the problems are still there

        Again, we still don’t know how these characters and their looks might develop later. I honestly still doubt those are the final costumes, and I think BM will have a mask. Ewan McGreggor is a great actor, so that’s no concern.
        But also, notice how the only problems left once you ignore the rumors are mostly superficial? In other words, the trailer itself was good, and the movie itself looks entertaining. It’s fair to have reservations, but if it were to somehow end up being the best movie of all time (obviously being super hypothetical), and the only problem was that you didn’t like the color of a character’s pants, then I would hope you wouldn’t be so hyper-critical as to still suggest it is all awful, lol

        That tonal issue stems from the bad writing and forced humor added in reshoots. There is no evidence for either of those things in this trailer.

        Since we’re only talking about tone and writing right now, let’s stick to that. I find it interesting how you could possibly decipher that this movie has “DOG SHIT” tone and writing based on seeing a trailer in which nothing indicates a particularly offensive or unexpected turn in either of those departments. Something tells me you’re actually just using those words with no consideration for what they actually mean just to say that you’ve already decided not to like the film.

    The actress for Huntress looks perfectly fine for the character. Zsasz’s actor looks fine. Besides the unnecessary and weird race-swap choice for BC, she actually doesn’t look too bad with blonde in her hair. I wouldn’t go quite as far as you say.

      I didn’t see “flamboyance” in this trailer so much. In fact, I can already see hints of intimidation coming off Ewan in the little we got of him. He is a great actor, after all. As for his mask, I still think he will have one. No need to assume he doesn’t.
      The actresses look fine for the characters, one of them is just the wrong race, which is admittedly annoying, but perhaps not beyond redeeming necessarily. As for their costumes, I still doubt these are their final costumes.
      HQ has been painted in more “antiheroic” light before. That’s nothing new or contrary to comic book canon, so...
      That whole rumor from whatshername is false. Isn’t it convenient she has since said the big stuff she talked about was removed with reshoots? Not to mention her claims about the reshoots being extensive being contradicted by so many other sources and the simple fact that they were brief.

  It certainly does not look soulless. There was a lot of energy throughout and the Joker/Harley stuff seemed to actually have meaning in the film, whereas I feared it would just be a throwaway reference.
  Black Mask might still get a mask. Canary looks sorta like herself when the hair’s blonde. Hopefully that’s a bigger deal in the actual movie.

        If you're doing a super hero / comic book character you would expect people to cosplay it. Look at SS harley, the movie is trash but her costume and cosplays are pretty good.
        Still, you sell toys, Arts etc... If your "hero" dress like dog shit in the movie you don't sell that good / people don't really care about the character after the movie is ended.
        You need to put the character in the peoples minds, Thats why toys and cosplays are made.
        Who the fuck wants to cosplay those shitty costumes?

A comic book character must stay in peoples minds after they watch the film because it looks good... not forgattable shit like "baron zemo" from Civil War. Agreed, sometimes it may not work, like with a hawkeye costume or a wolverine costume... but if they could make the Aquaman costume work... and also, it's not like Huntress', BC's and Cassandra's outifts are that hard to adapt into a working super hero costume that looks great... not like some random people taken from the streets

As for this movie, though, like I said in my reply other to him, I am still operating on the assumption that these are not the final costumes, but even so, HQ’s is gonna be very memorable to the audience, just like you’re saying - guaranteed. And even if these do turn out to be the final costumes, the movie could still be great apart from that.         That is the stupidest logic ever. Making toy sales and cosplayability the standard for costume design is what has given us random trash in so many movies before. That is absolutely the opposite of what you want to do. If it works as a sellable toy or can be cosplayed easily on top of actually being good costume design, that’s great for economic reasons, but that’s all.
        Costume design should be true to the character and be justified in the story and the world of that story. So, for instance, the traditional costume HQ wore in BTAS would not be good for this movie; it doesn’t work in live action and would come across as ridiculous instead of authentic and believable and consistent with the world the movie takes place in.
        When you bend to the toy sales and cosplaying idea, you get multiple unwarranted twists on the same costume which have no reason to exist in the story that make the movie look a bunch of toys on the screen like it’s an ad for merch instead of a movie, or over simplistic and low budget looking designs that do not at all do the character justice for the sake of being easy to recreate at home instead of being epic and unattainable except with a Hollywood production team.
        However, with that said, some of these costumes already DO seem iconic and cosplayable, like HQ’s main gold overalls look. I can see almost as many people cosplaying that as did her outfit in SS.
        And on top of that, as I have said before, I doubt these are going to be the final costumes all the characters wear throughout the entire movie. I think Black Mask WILL have a mask in the movie and that Huntress and Canary will look more like their respective characters than we’re currently seeing.
        But you want to hear some things I don’t like? Sure. I generally could never stand HQ as a character, I am against the fact that they changed Black Canary’s race for multiple reasons, the actress for Cassandra Cain’s only saving grace for me - as of right now - is that she is related to Dante Basco, and I can’t stand the fact that so far Barbara Gordon is nowhere to be found represented in this iteration of the Birds of Prey.

      Yeah. How dare we fans of a beloved property expected the core themes and aspects of that property to be accurately depicted and represented well on the big screen. Especially when those movies have to funny and irritating side effect of changing to comic books in order to match them to the movies more.
      Creative freedom is not Carte Blanche for these films to do whatever the heck they want with beloved properties. It is not a license for filmmakers to completely chuck out the source material and to do whatever they feel like doing. It’s disrespectful to the property and it’s straight up disrespectful to the fans who have loved and supported the iconic property for years before Hollywood got to it.
      When you are doing an adaptation, creative freedom is secondary to adhering to core principles and themes of the characters and their world. If you can’t work within those parameters, then you aren’t that creative to begin with.
      You are right though. Comic books do take liberties all the time. Which is why DC Comics is failing hard lately with sales getting lower and lower with each passing day. It’s why Tom King’s Batman rub will probably go down as one of the worst takes on the character in years.

Idk why people expect to see the whole movie in the first trailer lol like the trailer is supposed to make you excited and interested to see the movie. People complaining about too much Harley are bugging she is the main character and star of the movie and I’m sure the BOP are gonna shine and have lots to do in the movie so stop crying and just enjoy the show. Half of the people complaining that there Is not enough BOP in the trailer are probably not even fans of BOP lol.

  Just as I'm not even a fan of Iron FIst, yet the show sucked, I'm not even a fan of Shazam and I disliked the film (yes, I'm in the minority; no regrets). Your point is? Anyways, as viewers, don't we deserve a bit more of "quality"? Better than being conformists. Specially given the costs of movie tickets nowadays.
  Yes, I read some BOP comics, but I'm not a fan. Yet this trailer is still mediocre at best, both as an adaptation of source material, and a movie itself; doesn't even make me interested in the film; isn't that what trailers are supposed to do?

    Do you know how many movies that had awesome trailers sucked and movies that had bad trailers were actually good ? What I’m saying is it’s one trailer and it was a lot better then what I thought it would be. Wait for the movie to come out before making an opinion.

        Nobody is putting a gun to your head if you don’t want to watch the movie by all means don’t watch it. But you judging it without watching it is where it gets confusing for me. You can judge the look and characterization but it’s a small sample to judge from.

Oh wait, no: they were all as bad as the trailers. And luckily, I skipped most of them in theaters, saved my "dollarz" :v
