Joker takes the Golden Lion top prize at the Venice Film Festival

It seems that everyone at the Venice Film Festival truly liked Todd Phillips' Joker as it has won the top prize, the Golden Lion.

The Venice Film Festival is wrapping up in Italy on Saturday, and that means it's time to hand out the prizes. This particular film festival has more awards than most with different levels and unusual names, but the recognized top prize is the Golden Lion.

Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips were both on hand to accept the prestigious award for their film.

Joker is not yet done with the film festival circuit with showings still scheduled for Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Fest, and the Zurich Film Festival.

There is still a long road ahead of it, but taking home the Golden Lion definitely puts Joker into the conversations for the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. There is no direct correlation, but it just furthers putting the film on the road to those prizes when as the autumn film season progresses.

With just under a month until Joker hits general release, it's going to be an interesting few weeks as Joker continues its film festival journey.

Joker hits theaters on Oct. 4.

Holy shit. This is hugeeeee. I'm so glad for Phillips and Phoenix. I hope this shows WB that it doesn't need to always do big budget DC movies.

Unfortunately once the 500 'other' critcs get their hands on this its RT score will drop to high 70s maybe even mid 70. Which may hurt its BO potential with people opting to wait for digital release.

  That would still be fresh.And, Movies like Aladdin etc. have shown that rt score doesn't matters much.What matters is word of mouth which will make or break this movie.My worry is that audience might not like this movie cause of it being a character study with not much action.Then, Being R-rating also hurts it's box office.But again, Boxofficepro is projecting a $100 million weekend now for joker.

  Yeah the artsy and indie feel really hurt Logan didn't it and critics sure hated it. I don't get your logic, plenty of indie, arty and R-rated films do well with critics so why shouldn't Joker? Let me guess you're one of those people who think critics hate DC despite them loving Nolan's work and loving both Shazam and Wonder Woman, i mean its almost like critics liked or loved the good or great DC films.

        The critics love Marvel argument is also flawed. I think people forget that the MCU is 11 years old and some critics would have been in their teens when it started and have been with it for 11 years, of course some bias will be there because the MCU has been a big part of their lives especially if they are a fan as well, CM was shit but critics going easy doesn't surprise me because end of the day CM wasn't just a standalone origin film it was another MCU film what was also a semi prequel to Endgame so yeah they go easy because its part of something they like or love.
        I'm a huge Alien fan with the first two being two of my favourite films, i adore the series so when i watched Alien Covenant i was pretty easy on it because as a fan of Alien i wanted to enjoy it and wanted to overlook how bad a lot of it is, back then if had to review it i would have give a 3/5 what equals Fresh on RT, now looking back i would give 2/5. CM won't be looked back kindly from people in the future, look at Thor The Dark World that has a Fresh rating yet most critics and fans now all agree its up there with the worst of the MCU. Being a fan of something can impact that first opinion after watching it, after i left Endgame i said its the best MCU film ever, now i would rank it 4th or 5th. Critics love the MCU because its been with them for a long time, DC other then Nolan hasn't had anything to really grip you and get you being more friendly, every film needs to prove something especially when the DCEU has had way more misses then hits and that's not even including stuff outside of it like Green Lantern. Once DC starts putting out more hits this supposed bias will die down.

        Well, of course both statements are ridiculous. On the hits and misses thing, I don't know if I can really hate on WB or DC for that, because DC has so much more substantial of a history doing films and shows. Of course some have sucked, just like some Marvel things have sucked. Prior to 2008 what show or movie made by Marvel( not Fox or Sony) was any good? Prior to 2008 you had the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Nick Fury and that god awful FF movie in the 90's. Blade was the only movie I actually think isn't atrocious but the sequels are just bad. Leading up to Iron man Marvel had Daredevil, Punisher, Elektra, Ghost Rider and Hulk all of which are awful.
        They started getting good/solid once Iron Man hit, but people just forget how atrocious their films were for some odd reason. The MCU is good, sure. But it also has duds and bad movies imo. People also seem to forget Inhumans.
        I'm actually ok with WB taking risk with movies. I'm not ok with them taking a risk like Zack Snyder on MoS only to then keep him on to make two other films. The continuation of his films after a mediocre reception of his first is judge awful management. But, I'm ok with them taking risk with films like Joker. Wether they stick the landing or not is another thing but I do respect it.

      You do know RT rarely matters with audiences right? Newspaper reviews, people on Twitter, word of mouth, ads and all that are what the mainstream audiences go by for guides. Its only the film industry and hardcore lot what take notice of RT, look at Dark Phoenix yeah it scored low on RT but do you really think it would have done much better if it was in the 80's? Nah people had no interest full stop and no matter the reviews it was never going to do well. Joker on the other hand has had a lot of build up with great trailers and great word of mouth and news stories like this one, people are starting to take notice a lot now of the film, sure it ain't grossing Deadpool numbers but when the film only needs just under $200M to be a good success for WB who cares?

        I'm a manager of a fucking cinema as of the beginning of this year and i've been working there for years before that so i think out of all the commenters here i'm the one to really know how audiences judge things.
        Studios do love or hate RT yeah i agree just like the games industry is obsessed over MC but guess what both matter jack shit with the mainstream crowd. Fallout 76 a steaming pile of shit was was slaughtered by critics and Youtubers and it still sold well and is a success, sure the internet acted like it flopped but it didn't, Venom a steaming pile of shit was a hit, Blade Runner 2049 one of the best films of the 21st century was a disappointment, every Transformers Bay film was a huge success not including the last one, Suicide Squad the worst DCEU film was a hit for WB, Mad Max Fury Road one of the best action films ever made while not a flop didn't make as much as expected and left the chances for a sequel pretty slim, do you want more?

      Most people do not look at RT, mainly hardcore movie audiences. GA will not be swayed by wether its 100% or a 40%. They could care less, look at how many views the trailers got, Joker has become the most anticipated movie this fall by far. Plus all of the amazing reviews by people in the actual business, not just critics, and it’s already snatching major awards. Do you really think RT will be the determining factor? Hell no!

They're either going to flop or hit regardless. Especially if they're something that people already recognize. I'd also like to throw out there though, that a lot of my friends just watch whatever. By the way there's a commentary in there by one of the judges, Mary Harron, director of American Psycho, that said this:
“They took a comic book mythology that has been done in so many ways and overturned it and revitalized it for now” with compassion. Harron was also very impressed with “the magnificent performance” of Phoenix. She added that the rules here prevented giving Joker both the Golden Lion, and the acting prize."
Anyways, just give Joaquin the Oscar right now. Only one that worries me is Tom Hanks, but I think he will most likely be nominated for a supporting actor role in his movie.

Serious question on film criticism here.
So I've read the RT reviews of fresh and rotten. Basically, the rotten reviews state that Joker is hollow/unsubstantial and Phoenix's acting was forced. The fresh reviews state that Joker is substantial and wonderful acting by Phoenix.
Now they all watched the same movie and 2 different conclusions came up. It's like looking at fruit and one group says apple and the other says orange. I know criticism is subjective but this baffles me.

  Honestly other then Forbes review i haven't read any of the reviews so i can't comment on what their saying but going by the build up to the film a fair load of naturally young white privileged "critics" expressed distaste on what the film is doing and how its humanizing murderers and saying how its saying only the mentally ill would go out and go on murder sprees, now i don't know if every bad review is from them but i know some are.
  Ignoring that though yeah opinions are subjective unless it contradicts facts, thinking the film is hollow is a subjective thing. Acting is a weird one though, i think around 75% of the time acting being good or bad is a factual thing, factually Halle Berry was downright awful in Catwoman while factually Heath Ledger was incredible in The Dark Knight. On the other hand its up to the person if they think Henry Cavill is great as Superman, i think he gives a good performance but is brought down by poor writing and direction but my Mum when she watched MoS and BvS thought he was poor and very wooden, go on the internet or look at reviews and the opinions on him are all over the place as well. That said and going by trailers its very clear Phoenix is giving one hell of a performance in Joker, i think the people who don't like the film are letting that cloud their view on him.

    I'm on the fence on Cavill personally. I think he has a ton of potential but he's so much more charismatic in other roles, I just think it's all down to the material he is given. I do think he should get a proper chance at Superman though.

      While the dialogue and CGI face weren't good i do think Cavill showed he could easily play a more in line Superman really well in JL, Cavill had to be part of Snyder's "vision" and suffer the poor writing from it so honestly i don't blame him at all. As you said he's shown on other roles he can act well, for me he was one of the highlights of MI Fallout.

        Yeah, it's really hard to tell. The only chance Cavill got to play actual Superman, was in a movie that was chopped to pieces, reshot, rushed, made by two directors and a studio, and his performance was obscured by the most terrifying CG in recent memory.

  Those reviews aren't made by actual critics; I mean people who know movies, experts with a keen eye for cinematography. Most of them are some douchebags who like watching movies and their reviews are simply opinions presented as criticism. A review shouldn't be an opinion, it should be a non biased, expert analysis and no, people on RT aren't critics. That's the problem, opinions are subjective, criticism shouldn't be.

      Yeah, perhaps my post was a bit too radical. Of course there's room to be a bit subjective and also not literally everyone is just a douche with an opinion. There are knowledgeable people there, but it's just there are more of them who are not. I realize I've been unfair and insulted people who actually put work in their reviews and try to be as objective as possible, but the RT score as a whole is, well, kind of rotten because of the nasty ones.

I seriously doubt that the movie is that good, i have the feeling that is being praised as a movie for political reasons, given that a good acting performance is not good enough on its own to make a movie good, and while i dont doubt that the movie might be good (though it has nothing to do with the Joker at all) i doubt that is even near a "maesterpiece"

One of the main jury members (director Mary Harron) said they absolutely would have given Joaquin Phoenix best actor but Venice rules prevented awarding one movie two top prizes.
