Joker trailer shows off new footage of a descent into madness

The full Joker trailer has arrived, and it shows one man's slow descent into madness.

This trailer gives us a bit more of a look into what leads to Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) putting on the clown makeup to become the Joker. It seems it is a case of Fleck being beaten down - both figuratively and literally - at every turn of his life. Everyone has a breaking point, and clearly, Fleck hits that wall.

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck along with Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.

Joker hits theaters on Oct. 4, 2019.

  I’ll agree this is just Joaquin doing his thing, when Heath truly transformed himself. But, Joaquin still deserves to be handed an Oscar for even a rote performance and personally, having the Joker join Vito Corleone as the only role different actors have won Oscars for portraying feels right.

Looks like a huge mess. The fratboy stooges behind Hangover trying to go deep. The freedom they were given with canon is shocking. Joaquin looks phenomenal, but some of this storytelling is on the nose wince-inducing, even if the DP seems to be doing an ok job conjuring a 70s stylistic fever dream. Obviously still going opening night.

    No I see everything and enjoy everything, Comics , movies, cartoons, but I don't expect that any medium respect the other. A movie should respect it's own laws and established story, I don't care if the movie didnt respect the character or the canon or anything outside the set movie or universe of movies, a good joker and a batman that kills will be just fine for me if in the movie it's like this, the most important is that the story is good.

Exactly what do you see about the Joker in this trailer? It will be a very well acted movie, no doubt about that, it might even have a good script, but there is nothing about Joker in this movie, literally nothing, i am surprised that more people is not saying that.

This isn't making those types of numbers, Deadpool only got that far because it was a huge crowd pleaser what appealed to everyone, Joker is a niche "artsy" film what is incredibly dark and those types of R-Rated films don't make huge numbers.

Not that it looks bad or anything, but this truly is not the Joker we all know and love. Seems like they're portraying him more as some type of anti-establishment, anarchist anti-hero/ symbol rather than a true mass-murdering psychopath. Joaquin looks incredible, but I'm not really liking the direction.

  No, I wouldn't say so. Ledger was pure chaos, not just "anarchy" as in "extreme left-wing". I'm not referring to anarchy as a concept, but an ideology. Ledger believed in the concept of it, but this seems more like they're pushing the ideology of it (hence the Joker followers we see in the trailers: as in, they're ideologues. Ledger had thugs under his command. No one "believed" in what he stood for, this seems to be completely different. It's difficult to explain, lol).

      Is JL 2 confirmed? This is news to me. And if there's going to be another JL, is Batman going to be in it? And if that's the case, will they have 2 Batmans, considering Reeves Batman isn't part of the DCEU?
      The doubts about Superman are not about the director, but whether Cavill will keep reprising the role or they'll recast.
      Come on, lets stop pretending WB/DC know where they're going. It's clear they don't.

    There's as much connection as the individual filmmakers want there to be. The only real through-line they had was the Zack Snyder films, and what they never told us and we didn't realize until this year was that those were essentially a closed-ended cinematic graphic novel that wasn't intended to spawn a long-lived universe (if we assume that you aren't going to have a long-lived DC universe without Bruce Wayne as Batman). Now I think they've decided that the base is set, and they can use it to build out a "filmmaker-driven" "universe" without any intention of an underlying Infinity Saga-type hook.
    Joker is definitely not connected to anything; I've seen some references that they may even call it DC Black Label. Reeves's Batman is still up in the air but I'm leaning towards it's also totally standalone and not a prequel to Batfleck.

      It's so stupid because Marvel already showed how to please the fans and make tons of $ with a cinematic universe. Maybe WB should stop being so terrified of trying again just because they failed the first time.

They just didn't do it with comic book IP but with a little thing called "Harry Potter." Same blueprint, right down to "the role of Kevin Feige will be played by JK Rowling." So with DC they wanted to do something different, without so much all-compelling story and central planning.
      But I don't think "being reactive" is fair. You can't "be reactive" when you're rejecting the whole idea of a centrally-planned shared universe story from the get-go, which I think they have done because they'd rather just open everything up to the various directors and let them have at it. There are a dozen small stories, but no larger tale being told, because that's what they want it to be.

I’m mixed on my feelings about the trailer. Def gonna go opening weekend regardless...I hope its more than just a ‘descent into madness’ movie and more of a, well, Joker movie.
Also of course its infinitely tempting to compare this to Ledger in DK but I am really trying to avoid that.
But back to my original point....Joker is not just a mad man with a penchant for dressing like a clown. I sincerely hope thats not all we get. Joker in relation to Batman and vice versa has always been what interested me most about this super villain, so personally I hope they do justice to that dynamic. We shall see.

  Well, if people would go to movies that weren't connected to existing IP, they wouldn't have to attach names like Joker in order to make money. But I agree, this movie will end (timeline-wise) long before anyone starts dressing like a bat or falls into a chemical bath. This is a film about a barely-stable man becoming a psycho killer. (That bit about "introduce me as Joker"... does anyone else think that audience will be lucky to get out alive?) But we do get to see a Wayne punch him in the face!
