Early Joker box office forecast calls for a healthy result

The first long-range forecasts are in for Joker, and it appears the Clown Prince of Crime will have a lot to smile about.

Box Office Pro is reporting the first long-range tracking for Todd Phillips' Joker. Currently, the service is predicting a very healthy opening weekend in the $60 to $90 million dollar range. As to the eventual domestic box office, it's currently pegging that at $175 million.

The site does not do international projections.

Among the checks in the positive column for the film, it cites the popularity of the character, audiences being accepting of R-rated comic book films such as Logan and Deadpool, and it's trending well on social media.

As to possible detractors, it mainly comes down to does anyone want an origin story for the Joker? As a general rule, fans and moviegoers alike have enjoyed the fact we know nothing about him, so that could possibly keep people away.

Wtih a budget of $55 million, a $175 million result would be well within the normal benchmarks of a movie being considered profitable. The site does note that this is the first major departure for DC from PG-13 fare, and that its forecast should be considered volatile until closer to release.

While nothing is set in stone as of yet, things are looking pretty positive for Joker.

Joker hits theaters on Oct. 4.

So... unless some catastrophe happens, $400-$450M are pretty much guaranteed, and it still can overperform
The irony here is that those are better numbers than most of Marvel Phase one solo films, with a film that cost about 1/3 of what those films cost, it has no "hero", it is an R-rated film... and there are still some who manage to find ways to turn this into a negative result... oh, well...

Batman and Joker characters will always be bank. That is, if the story is good enough.
Hope this movie and The Batman will have the rest of DC follow suit, instead of the garbage we got with both Aquaman and Shazam.

A "black Label" universe would be great, more grounded, with less flashy stuff, less CGI, but with stories that really leave you something to think about

  Its very needed in this genre, which is why I think it will do very well in terms of box office. Some people are just tired of the CGI, and just want a good well written non-CGI superhero film (villain in this case), which hasn't been done since the Nolan trilogy.

Great.Box office is very important as it relates to studio confidence about a property.If DC movies performs great at box office then wb will take more risks

175 million domestic is a modest box office. I think it will be lower than that actually in line with Shazam and Godzilla. Internationally the movie won’t make as much as Shazam or Godzilla though.

The movie has a low budget, there is no way it does not do well at the box office. And casual audiences dont know what they want, if you give them a Joker origin story even though is a stupid idea, they will swallow it.

I’m hoping for at least a 400 mil WWBO.
If this movie is as good as I’m expecting I’m hoping that it makes all the money. Im hoping it gets all the critical acclaim it hopefully deserves.
