It's never a bad day when you get to attend the North American premiere of your film and pick up an award while doing it.
Toronto Film Festival co-heads Joana Vicente and Cameron Bailey have announced that Joaquin Phoenix will receive the TIFF Tribute Actor Award on Monday, Sept. 9 at Fairmont Royal York. This will be at the same time as the North American premiere of Joker which will have already had its European premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
“Displaying both raw instinct and consummate technical skill, Joaquin Phoenix is the complete actor, and one of the finest in contemporary cinema,” said Bailey. “Over three decades, he has brought a piercing truth to each groundbreaking role. TIFF is thrilled to be celebrating an artist of his calibre with this inaugural award. We can’t wait for Festival audiences to experience his electric turn in Joker.”
This award will celebrate his entire body of work which includes films such as Gladiator, Signs, Her, The Master, Inherent Vice, Walk the Line, and many more.
Meryl Streep will also be receiving the honor while attending the festival in support of the Steven Soderbergh-directed Netflix film The Laundromat.
It sounds as though Phoenix is going to have a very busy festival schedule for the next few months.
Joker makes it wide-release debut on Oct. 4.
