Ava DuVernay and Tom King wrap week 1 on New Gods script

As San Diego Comic-Con drew to a close, Tom King made his way North to begin working with Ava DuVernay on the New Gods script. The week has now drawn to a close, and that means some celebratory tweets and photos were in order.

It was announced back in May that King had been tapped to co-write the upcoming New Gods movie with DuVernay. With a week to work together in person, King is now back at home, but one assumes the groundwork for the story has been laid out.

Following the first tweet, the two creators traded a few more compliments.

As it currently stands, no production schedule or release date has been announced for New Gods. DuVernay is set to direct as well as co-write with King.

The overall story of New Gods tells of twin planets New Genesis and Apokolips, ruled by Highfather and Darkseid respectively. The stories of the ongoing war have told many tales, but usually, focus heavily on Orion. Born the son of Darkseid, he was traded to Highfather for his son, Scott Free, in an effort to cement peace between the worlds.

Created by comic legend Jack Kirby, the New Gods have played a large role in the overall DC Universe for decades. Darkseid has gone on to be one of the biggest threats in the DCU, and it sure to play a large part in the story.

No word yet on a release date for the New Gods movie, but with King and DuVernay now at work on the script, hopefully, more updates will be on the way.

      WB were the true villain yes, but Johns was their enforcer, and Whedon a pawn. All I’m saying is good comics don’t always mean good movies. I don’t actively distrust him per se, but I definitely don’t implicitly trust him anymore, and I definitely believe it is unwise to continue doing so at this point.

      I don't doubt he's a good writer but his handling on JL was proof enough. WB got rid of people that deserved it. He also produced Shazam. Although I think was good, it wasn't good in the Box Office. Johns' effort was to make DCEU like MCU which was a recipe for disaster.

      my dude they had to rush out a 2 hour or less jl movie before even intreducing half the league and john had to work with two compleatly diffrent directors on a movie where neither of them had any buissness doing a justice league film. and when he finally gets to work with a director who at least has his shit together they make a great family/superhero movie with only a 90 million budget.

      Absolutely. There were things Whedon did wrong (the lame jokes demeaning Batman, Diana and Lois and Martha among them), but the two hour runtime that overly rushed the story and the schedule that forced Cyborg to spend 2/3 of the film in a hoodie because there wasn't time to rerender his scenes were all on WB.

      Johns noted the series was inspired mostly by the Teen Titans comics of the 1980s, since that comic's run "had so much drama" and "was so revolutionary for its time". We may never know exactly how big an impact Johns had on the films he was associated with, but WB was clearly a mess at the time, changing gears every 5 minutes on DC films. To pin that on Johns is unfair.

    Yes, he and Berg were given titles that suggested they were in charge. But Johns had his for what, a year or less? And most (if not all) of the movies that came out while he had that title were already pretty far into production. They still had bosses at WB (obviously), so the potential for meddling was there.
    I'm not saying he definitely *wasn't* part of the problem, but we have no way of knowing for sure.

    Of course it was. We knew it like 1 month into the movie production, when all the newspapers reported that Johns started to re-write the movie. That first JL trailer came about after Jonhs's re-writes. So really what the people are campaigning for is the Johns Cut.

      As for reshoots? So what every big film has them, the biggest film of all time had them and the line "and I Am Iron Man" was a line from a reshoot. Reshoots are very common.

Out there changing the world? Um no King unless she's out there helping the poor, donating her millions to help the environment and trying to find cures to many illnesses as well saving people who are dying she's actually doing fuck all except make mediocre films, New Gods could be amazing but it isn't changing the world and it purely exists like 99% of Hollywood films to make the rich working at WB get even more money.

Its statements like that what really make me dislike him as he's such a pretentious ass. Also if he's writing the film like he does comic books then expect a ton of plot holes, characters repeating themselves and barely saying much, twists designed to shock and not much else and humour what only King could find funny.

Also saying "Ava Is" is pretty disturbing considering what the phase "Darkseid Is" means.

      Ava thinks it's more important to "convey a message" than it is to tell the truth. In fact, she NEEDS critics to virtue-signal and praise her work for its supposed "social significance", otherwise she wouldn't enjoy the critical praise she currently has, as her work is extremely mediocre, if not outright bad on its own. So what Hunter said is completely accurate. She's doing fuck all except make biased propaganda full of lies that isn't actually doing the world a favor. If anything, it's harmful.

      You keep bringing up private prisons as if that is your "aha gotcha now!"-argument. Except, friend, the number of privately owned prisons in the US is declining, with CCA and GEO operating just 121 of the nation's 1,800-plus state and federal-level detention facilities.

      As of 2010, the number of prisoners (state, federal or local) held in private prisons represented just 8% of the entire U.S. incarcerated populace. So much for "private prisons" actually being a valid argument to make in the grander scheme of things.
      Furthermore, while GEO recorded $1.6 billion in profits in 2010, it still remains a multinational, with 40% of its annual profits culled from international and comprehensive reentry services. And as for CCA's annual revenue spread of $1.7 billion? Well, a lot of that cashflow can be explained by the Obama Administration, which granted the company $1 billion to construct and manage the South Texas Family Residential Center - a detention center not for prisoners, but Central American asylum seekers.
      From the very start, Ava's argument is critically hampered by the fact that incarcerating people isn't profitable. Slave traders made a lot of money off the Atlantic Slave Trade, but considering the fact the U.S. loses $80 billion a year in taxpayer dollars on the nation's prison systems while your much talked about private prison contractors barely generate $5 billion annually, it's pretty hard to see where she (or you for that matter) comes away with the idea that imprisoning people is any, way, shape or form economically beneficial, especially for the state. You're just wrong, and the narrative Ava was pushing with this garbage documentary is nothing short of disgusting and blatantly dishonest. It is vile.

This comment section is god awful. What does Johns have to do with this film? He's not a producer anymore. The people who had executive control over the divisive movies that split audiences don't work for WB or DC Films anymore in those sorts of roles. Just sit back and wait. Their goal is to make better, and more distinct films. To think that they don't know that people hated some of the previous films after they literally cleaned house is just ignorant. And no, just because Shazam and Aquaman were lighthearted doesn't mean they "want to be the MCU" or will follow that for every film. 1. MCU didn't create lightheartedness. 2. They want the films to vary in tone according to director and character. Following one universal tone and genre is what the MCU does, and it's the complete opposite of what they want to do. Ava has only enjoyed success whenever she's tackled "social issues", and she's made clear she doesn't have any problem with being unfair or even outright lying in her work.
When she actually had to make a film of her own instead of relying on the moral self-aggrandizing and virtue-signalling of movie critics, she has massively failed. This is a woman who is not good at her job but still gets work because of her gender, race and political biases. I'm sorry, I have no respect for this, nor do I actually expect anything good from this movie. And I highly doubt it will even enter production at all.

There were things Whedon did wrong (the lame jokes demeaning Batman, Diana and Lois and Martha among them), but the two hour runtime that overly rushed the story and the schedule that forced Cyborg to spend 2/3 of the film in a hoodie because there wasn't time to rerender his scenes were all on WB.

And most (if not all) of the movies that came out while he had that title were already pretty far into production. They still had bosses at WB (obviously), so the potential for meddling was there.

Out there changing the world?         You keep bringing up private prisons as if that is your "aha gotcha now!"-argument. Except, friend, the number of privately owned prisons in the US is declining, with CCA and GEO operating just 121 of the nation's 1,800-plus state and federal-level detention facilities.

        As of 2010, the number of prisoners (state, federal or local) held in private prisons represented just 8% of the entire U.S. incarcerated populace. So much for "private prisons" actually being a valid argument to make in the grander scheme of things.
        Furthermore, while GEO recorded $1.6 billion in profits in 2010, it still remains a multinational, with 40% of its annual profits culled from international and comprehensive reentry services. And as for CCA's annual revenue spread of $1.7 billion? Well, a lot of that cashflow can be explained by the Obama Administration, which granted the company $1 billion to construct and manage the South Texas Family Residential Center - a detention center not for prisoners, but Central American asylum seekers.
        From the very start, Ava's argument is critically hampered by the fact that incarcerating people isn't profitable. Slave traders made a lot of money off the Atlantic Slave Trade, but considering the fact the U.S. loses $80 billion a year in taxpayer dollars on the nation's prison systems while your much talked about private prison contractors barely generate $5 billion annually, it's pretty hard to see where she (or you for that matter) comes away with the idea that imprisoning people is any, way, shape or form economically beneficial, especially for the state. You're just wrong, and the narrative Ava was pushing with this garbage documentary is nothing short of disgusting and blatantly dishonest. It is vile.

        Similarly, the ONLY way one can assert black people are shot at a disproportionate rate is if you only look at the total number of black "victims" (25%) compared to the percentage of the US population they make up (13%). But if you account for crime rate per capita, behavior, arms/ weapons, etc etc, then the statistics demonstrably show that black Americans ARE NOT shot by cops at a disproportionate rate. In fact, cops are actually MORE likely to kill white men under the exact same circumstances.
        So don't you dare talk to me about "taking things out of context" when that is EXACTLY what 13th, and by proxy you, are doing without an ounce of self-awareness.

This comment section is god awful. What does Johns have to do with this film? He's not a producer anymore. The people who had executive control over the divisive movies that split audiences don't work for WB or DC Films anymore in those sorts of roles. Just sit back and wait. Their goal is to make better, and more distinct films. To think that they don't know that people hated some of the previous films after they literally cleaned house is just ignorant. And no, just because Shazam and Aquaman were lighthearted doesn't mean they "want to be the MCU" or will follow that for every film. 1. MCU didn't create lightheartedness. 2. They want the films to vary in tone according to director and character. Following one universal tone and genre is what the MCU does, and it's the complete opposite of what they want to do. Shazam and Joker releasing in the same year screams that.

Ava has only enjoyed success whenever she's tackled "social issues", and she's made clear she doesn't have any problem with being unfair or even outright lying in her work.
When she actually had to make a film of her own instead of relying on the moral self-aggrandizing and virtue-signalling of movie critics, she has massively failed. This is a woman who is not good at her job but still gets work because of her gender, race and political biases. I'm sorry, I have no respect for this, nor do I actually expect anything good from this movie. And I highly doubt it will even enter production at all.
