Those that love to see movies on physical film prints should rejoice if they're planning to see Joker in the fall. Not only is it going to show on film, but there will be 70mm prints as well.
Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, MA took to its Twitter account to announce that it had confirmed there will indeed be 70mm prints out in the world.
For those who are unaware of various film print differences, all you really need to know is that the larger the print, the crisper and clearer the image will be during projection. When movies were still all on film stock, 35mm became the standard as theaters tried to fit more and more screens into a building. It was also cheaper for the studios to print in the smaller format. 70mm prints of films have become rarer with time, and especially in the age of digital projection.
Quentin Tarantino, in particular, is a big proponent of 70mm going so far as to have a special roadshow for The Hateful Eight. To further entire people to experience the format if they were unfamiliar with it, he even went so far as to include extra footage.
The fact that Joker will have 70mm prints is actually a pretty big deal, and it shows that Warner Bros. is treating this film seriously. Sadly, not everyone has access to theaters with 70mm projectors, but if you do, you should definitely consider checking it out. Sprocket School has a list of 70mm capable theaters around the world.
