Shazam Blu-ray release looks set for a ton of deleted scenes

It's inevitable when a movie is made that some scenes just don't work as planned. It's not that they are bad, they just may interrupt the flow of the story, and so those scenes get edited out. Decades ago those scenes would be pretty much lost to eternity as there was no easy way to share them, but then DVDs and digital distribution came along. Not getting at least some deleted scenes is depressing.

Luckily, it seems like there will be quite a few when Shazam! hits store shelves.

Michel Aller, editor on Shazam!, recently spoke with Cinema Blend, and the topic of the deleted scenes for the film came up.

We had a lot of material. When you buy the DVD, you’ll be able to see, I think we have 20-24 minutes of deleted scenes. And one of the scenes that regretfully we had to pull out was a scene between young Billy and Mary, when he’s about to sneak out. It’s just a really touching scene, but it came so early in the movie, and we were trying to get to get to the Shazam character, that we couldn’t put everything that we liked at the front of the movie. So that was one scene that we pulled out. I’m glad there are DVDs out there so we can show these great scenes.

Considering the film clocked in at 132 minutes, that's a healthy chunk of deleted scenes to look forward to.

Seeing as the movie just completed its third weekend at the box office, it'll still be some time before the movie hits digital and Blu-ray. But it's always good to know that we should have quite a bit of extra content to look forward to.

It's funny when 20-24 minutes of deleted scenes are considered a lot while Hack Snyder used to have hour long additional footage which he used to shot and waste budget on.I guess that is the difference between a good and bad director.

If i remember it right then Civil War barely had any additional footage while BvS on the other hand had four hour long footage which became a mess when it was cut to a shorter movie.

According to Sandberg, much of the unused footage are actually “ alternative scenes” that were reshot rather than additional scenes. For example, adult Sivana’s interview with the abducted Asian lady originally took place in a white , sterile environment and they later reshot it to take place in a different room. Those alternate scenes probably won’t make into the DVD .
Sandberg also said in his twitter that what we saw in the theater is “ the director’s cut”, I.e. it is exactly what he wanted to be in the film. There won’t be any “ extended cut” then.

  He is indeed a very good director.I knew he would be the good choice the moment i visited his twitter.His twitter posts were hilarious.But, Yeah there were some problems with Shazam like a throwaway villain, Too much comedy and cgi looking cheap.Hopefully, He will correct those mistakes next time.

    cheap? The monsters looks terrifying... besides, any superhero movie, good or bad, has some ugly cgi shots.

    I beg to differ. I thought Sivana was the right choice to build off of. We know Black Adam is coming but easing into things for the origin film to make a good, strong first film with a powerful and emotional connection was the right call. Strong delivered with Sivana. And the family (and kid-friendly) aspects to the film gave DC a new demographic to expound on. And the comedic elements for the film were spot on for a kid just starting out as Shazam. It's only up from here but I'd say it was a real solid start overall.

  Not a troll, Cultist.Compared to BvS, Civil war was a masterpiece.Regardless, I wasn't even talking about quality but good directors knowing what they are doing instead of ending up with a three hour BvS cut which literally had no chance of being screened in theaters.

  It must be strange only being a fanboy to one thing. Me i love everything, i saw Shazam for the 2nd time last week and loved it even more then the first time and tomorrow night i shell be watching Endgame and no doubt loving it.

  Sad.If dc had hired a good director to develop BvS then they would be in totally different situation today.There wasn't any need of big plan.What they needed was good directors.It's good that they have learned their lesson and are hiring good directors now but it will take long to heal the damage Hack Snyder have done.

This is definitely a buy for me on blu ray. I wonder if DC plans on doing a "Phase 1" box set like Marvel did. I'd be willing to wait for that assuming DC's phase one started with Aquaman or WW. I still wonder if BVS, SS, and JL will be canon moving forward. Apart from a small comment in AM, it's like they're completely writing off those films.

They’re still canon, surely. “Phase 1” would be MoS-JL, logically. Maybe MoS-Shazam. But I doubt they’ll do that, because WB is no longer planning anything, but rather throwing whatever they think of at the wall and seeing what sticks, it seems.

  That might have been the case in past but current dc leadership aka Walter Hamada have clearly given a road-map until 2021 and is sticking to it unlike in past when we used to hear about dc considering developing a movie for a new dc property everyday.Regardless of how much success Aquaman had, It's sequel won't be released until 2022.That's not being reactionary.Squad is also being released 4 years later with a new director who knows what he is doing.

    There’s still so many announcements that have been made that we don’t know if they are still a thing or not, and unlike the excellent planning that went into the world of the MCU, the DCEU doesn’t seem to have any end goal for its overall story and arcs anymore, but is instead just going to be an umbrella under which to release random, mostly disconnected movies with no real aim or organized direction. No plan. We need a Kevin Feige.

      you are making it sound way worse than it actually is. Why does there need to be some super elaborate overarching plan? It seems to me like they are just going back to the old ways of the director's taking full control of their respective properties and stories. While there may not be a grand connected vision for the entire franchise, it would seem that each of the creative heads have their own vision and direction for each character which is, for the moment at least, probably being viewed as individual franchises in a lot of ways. I don't see why this is such a bad thing tbh. I actually prefer this method in some ways.
      And a lot of the stuff we hear about are not official announcements from WB themselves. They are basically just scoops. Ya im sure they have a lot of ideas being thrown around or that are in some form of development or another, which is pretty normal. Doesn't mean they are all going to actually come to fruition. I really don't believe their plans right now are as random as some think

      Because that’s the point. Having a shared universe is so that one can explore continuity and worldbuilding and story opportunities in ways that solo franchises don’t give the freedom to do. Having a plan is essential to good storytelling, lol. A single, shared continuity should be treated as just that - a single, shared continuity. Not a flimsy excuse to release a bunch of unrelated movies as a money-grab. Otherwise, just go back to having no shared universe. But of course, no one wants them to do that; we’ve been waiting for a shared DC universe on the big screen for YEARS. So now that we finally have one, it would be pretty darn crappy for them to just throw it out, or to practically throw it out while not literally doing so.
      Deathstroke was confirmed to have actually been happening - now who knows. Same story with Nightwing. And Batgirl. And Deadshot. And so on. Now some of these of course don’t even deserve to be made, but still, let’s actually get organized and figure out a plan and stick with it. Oh, and let’s not forget the movies that were officially announced and that genuinely NEED TO HAPPEN for this universe to work and move forward storytelling-wise that have now dropped off the face of the earth, apparently: MoS 2, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, and JL 2.

      The point of a shared world is so they can come together for crossovers at some point. My question is, why does it need an "overarching story"? In terms of the universe as a whole at least. The old DCEU was WAY too interconnected imo. The fact that Suicide Squad was so dependent on the events of BvS and referenced them so heavily just felt ridiculous and out of place to me. Here is how I look at it: what if 10 years from now somebody wants to check out Suicide Squad for the first time but has never seen BvS or Man of Steel? They would be so confused by all those references and the fact the plot basically acts as a result of those events. Why should they need to watch a movie called Batman v Superman in order to understand movie called Suicide Squad about a group of completely unrelated characters? Tf? Its sort of similar with the MCU to an extent but not quite on that level. But at the same time, most people would never recommend you start by watching Black Panther or something. They would tell you to start from the beginning and go through the whole damn thing because the entire thing is viewed as one big continuous franchise/story. Which, PERSONALLY, I just don't like. I realize I am apparently in the minority here. I would just rather each film largely be able to be viewed on its own standalone merit unless its a direct sequel to a related property(as in, BAtman 1,2 3. WW 1, 2, 3. Or JL 1,2, 3).
      And DC's situation is something relatively unique to them. They still have a connected universe technically and they just kind of have to make due within those parameters for the time being. But im pretty sure the fact that they are technically connected is just not their priority right now. They likely want to just focus on standalone stories for the time being until they build a better foundation. Then we may see them go back to crossovers and stuff. But I think people just need to accept that the DCEU is likely never going to be quite like the MCU. I doubt there will ever be that level of synergy and intricate worldbuilding. And thats not a bad thing. That doesn't mean they have no clue what they are doing and that everything is a total mess. Its just a bit different.
      Gareth Evans had brief talks about Deathstroke and thats about it. He never officially signed on. Batgirl is currently in the care of the girl who wrote Birds of Prey. And Nightwing was also a similar stage of extremely early development. The latter two will likely depend on what Reeves is plan is. Idk anything about Deadshot and I barely remember what the deal was with that in the first place.

      While i agree with your points about the MCU i actually think you picked the wrong film to use, Black Panther works completely on its own and doesn't need Civil War to work.

      its hard to explain. I mean you can, but I feel like the MCU is still generally viewed as one big franchise as opposed to a connected universe consisting of numerous franchises. Thats what it feels like to me at least.

      Yes, that would be included among the things I listed that come from a shared universe.
      I love the level of interconnectedness and intertwining continuity building upon each other like different chapters of one big story so much. It’s like the difference between a boring episodic series and much more exciting and satisfying serialized one. And plus, how SS handled it was one of the best parts of an otherwise poor movie; it made it feel like this is all the natural next steps of the same, real world. Nothing ridiculous about that.
      I have no sympathy for people aren’t willing to put in the work to get full continuity, frankly, lol. Casual fans bring it upon themselves. But either way, as long as that casual moviegoer has a grasp on the concept of who Superman is as a character, they could still get SS; it just wouldn’t be as good.
      But don’t get me wrong, I don’t even need the full on many-parts-in-one-story approach of the early DCEU, necessarily; I’m just worried they won’t even be attempting the relatively loose MCU approach. There should be a point to storytelling, otherwise it’s just a soulless, artless cash-grab.
      I think not having synergy and intricate worldbuilding in a SHARED UNIVERSE *is* a bad thing. Kinda misses the point of having one, as opposed to just doing solo franchises, like I said.

      I guess its just a different way of perceiving it. I look at each property as sort of being in its own world and its own sort of entity. This is how I view the comics as well. I don't mix and match every comic for different characters based on when they released chronologically. Each property has its own section.

      And even in comics, they will often have multiple different labels exploring the ramifications of the same event or all leading up to one such event in different ways

      i know its shared. But often to me each character kind of feels like they are in their own world dealing with their own problems. Its not like half of them are just hanging out in New York or whatever like Marvel.

Oh my. That news on the deleted scenes sounds very interesting indeed. I will definitely buy a copy of this movie when the Blu-ray is released in stores. Count me in.
