'Shazam!' director hopes 'Captain Marvel' makes "all the money" and shuts up trolls

Shazam! and Captain Marvel are uniquely linked in the pantheon of superhero-based movies. The title character of Shazam! went by the name "Captain Marvel" for decades before DC formally changed his name several years ago. Be it coincidence or fate, these two titles have landed just four weeks apart on the release calendar.

Lingering bitterness over naming rights has mixed in with some of the usual "Marvel vs. DC' mentality and has fans taking aim at one another and the respective films. Worse yet, many have taken exception to Brie Larson not smiling enough in Captain Marvel trailers and reasonably calling for inclusivity in the entertainment industry and the press who cover it. Those individuals are doing their best to sink the film's audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes before it's even released.

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg isn't here for any of that nonsense. "I for one look forward to Captain Marvel making all the money in the world to shut some of these people up," he wrote on Twitter. Sandberg also shared a link to an article from The Hollywood Reporter that recaps the troll situation impacting Captain Marvel.

THR's article also addressed the issues Sandberg has been dealing with. Fans have been hounding him for a new Shazam! trailer. Some have even accused the director and Warner Bros. of hiding the film. Those claims are bogus, of course, but they are part of the mess Sandberg is dealing with on a daily basis.

One Twitter user called Captain Marvel substandard in a reply to Sandberg. The director rightfully made the point that there really is no reason for anyone to be rooting against Captain Marvel or any other movie, especially when people haven't even seen the films in question.

As someone who's actually seen Captain Marvel, I can confirm that it is quite good and certainly "up to standards." As someone who visited the set of Shazam!, I don't think Sandberg has anything to hide other than spoilers. The new trailer will be along soon enough.

There is more than enough room for both films to win at the box office. Superhero-based movies will be much better off if both films are successful as opposed to just one. It's great to see Sandberg speaking out against the worst of online fan behavior and cheering on all films in this space.

There really aren't any trolls. They're just blowing this out of proportion to push the feminist narrative that people, specifically men, somehow want to keep women down.
People just weren't that impressed by the trailers. Stop inventing some sexist conspiracy theory because you can't accept the fact that you made something people haven't embraced thus far.
I'm sure the movie's fine anyway, but those trailers were generic and boring, at best.

      Dude do you even understand how RT works? Its based on the % of critics what likes the film, they only need to give 3/5 to be counted as fresh, basically a film could only have 3/5 and still that 100% rating on RT. Metacritic is flawed for films because they will take a 3/5 and make it 60/100 even if the site intends 7/10 with that 3/5.
      Oh by the way WW deserves those high scores because its a fantastic film, i myself give it 5/5.

      WW third act wasnt good, the villain wasnt good. Even you agreed that they were a lot of issues with the film, so i cant see how you gave it 5/5. Dont get me wrong, its still a good film. WW was overrated and had the women power movement behind it, with politicians and celebrities backing it up. Which is why it overperformed domestically just like black panther did. Its rated higher than TDK trilogy and infinity war and many more, which i think it didnt deserve. 80% on RT wouldve been more appropriate.

      Totally agree with you, Black Panther and Wonder Woman had their fair share of issues, both of them felt lacking in their third acts, and wonder woman has a forgettable villain. However the thing about those two movies was that they were focused on characters previously introduced or focused on in one way or another, captain marvel seems to be a mary sue character like Rey from star wars which isn't really helping the case, the problem lies with forced diversity, Black widow should have been first in line for a solo movie, they could have worked the plot into a well written spy thriller, however what we're getting instead of that is a character we have no attachment or affection towards, who is also supposedly the most powerful person in the MCU. Make no mistake BP and WW were enjoyable movies, however none of them were oscar worthy, if anything, Infinity war was a far better film than both the former and the latter. But this is only my opinion, you're allowed to disagree with it if you want.

      Actually, a 5/5 means its flawless or at least close to being it. WW had major issues that were important which you couldn't just sweep under the rug. Its a good film, but it doesnt deserve the high praise its getting. I even think MoS was a better film.

      No in reviewing stuff 5/5 isn't flawless, ask any critic and they will say the same, hell even Ebert agreed with that and has giving highly flawed films top praise purely because he loved the film.
      The Dark Knight has some serious issues like how Dent's decent into Two-Face was rushed, Rachel being a woman in a fringe, plot holes like when Batman saves Rachel but leaves Joker at top with the guests doing whatever he pleases, you also have all the stuff Joker does what relies too much on everything working exactly the way needs it to. Its also quite questionable that neither would blow up the other as well. None of this stops The Dark Knight from being a masterpiece though as the good stuff outweighs the bad stuff.
      As for WW well i agree its 3rd isn't as good as the first 2 acts but its not as bad as you're making it out to be. I don't see a problem with the hero fighting the villain in a big battle because well yeah its a superhero film with a woman who can lift tanks what the hell did you expect? Anyway the 3rd act has some real strong points like Steve's death what does a lot for his character and Diana, her reaction to it was epic and her moments debating if she should kill Doctor Poison or not is a strong scene and says a lot about her, her speech after that is also strong and a great moment for Gal and her defeat of Ares is great empowering moment for her character. The 3rd act is flawed sure but i would say its the strongest 3rd act in the DCEU purely for the character work on Diana and Steve.

      I have to disagree with you on WW. It was truly a great film IMO, It had depth and heart, and No Man's Land is literally one of the best Superhero scenes ever. Yeah 3rd act wasn't very good, but it doesn't take away from an otherwise solid movie.

      The movie itself was good, but nothing groundbreaking, it followed a cliched plot structure, which works, and I myself found the movie quite enjoyable. There's a difference between a movie being good and a movie being enjoyable, take the Godfather for example, the movie is good but not many people find it enjoyable because of its length. All in all, liking a movie is quite subjective, what works for me might not work for you and there's nothing wrong with that. That being said marvel movies do tend to get higher ratings due to following a formula that results in good entertainment. Birdman as a movie is much superior than almost anything marvel has put out, but not many laypeople were entertained while watching it.

      The problem with captain marvel is it being shoved down out throats rather than us liking it naturally, it was this exact behavior that led to the inhumans being disliked in marvel comics by many avid readers, because they were meant to be a replacement for the X-Men.       Two years ago, we got Wonder Woman - the first Solo female superhero movie in over a decade. It was also a part of the extremely divisive DCEU -
      And YET, did you happen to see too many hostile "white male toxic supremacy" factions attack its RT score? Cause I certainly didn't. It had a very healthy 96% "looking forward to seeing it" prior to the movie's opening. Even now after all is said and done, it has an entirely admirable 88% rating amongst audiences on RT.
      I'm not saying there's not ANY toxic trolls running around, but it's probably not for the reasons the media wants you to think.

  Because Wonder Woman's marketing was not based on the premise that "women can be heroes too".. WW has been a female hero since the character fiirst appeared in 1941/42. The problem with the MCU's Captain Marvel is that she is a generic, focus-group engineered character designed to reach a certain target audience and take advantage of identity politics. Since she's totally artificial and not grounded in any comics tradition (even usurping a character's name that has never been hers to begin with), Disney has to go with silly marketing lines like the one I mentioned above.

      They get more than 50% from domestic market revenue while only get 1/3 internationally and 1/4th from China.That's why domestic revenue matters the most for studios.Captian Marvel may end up generating more "profit" than Aquaman cause Aquaman big chunk of revenue is from China where they only get 1/4th.

From the reactions of people who actually saw Shazam, it looks like the script is very strong and the actors really nailed it. I'd say that is probably credible. My biggest concern is with visual quality given that Shazam was a relatively low budget movie. And, yes, marketing has been lacking so far considering that the movie is being released a little over a month from now.
I also question WB's decision to release it between Captain Marvel and Endgame , which will cut into the movie's legs. Why didnt' they go for a summer release especially considering that Shazam is very much targeted at school kids ?

  Well, I can tell the reason for slow marketing that wb doesn't want to spend millions on their movies especially the one's where they are taking risk.Four of seven new upcoming announces dc movies are low budget one's(Joker, Birds of prey, Shazam, Super pets), Remaining two are sequels of highly profitable WW and SS, Last one is about their most profitable hero aka Batman.Looks like the reason they bring in Walter Hamada was cause of him having success with low budget horror movies which generated a a lot of profit for the studio and not cause he is a great administrator.WB seems scared after BVS and Jl and are hesitating to take big risk.I doubt we would see Flash, GL or Cyborg movies anytime soon.

Sandberg wants as many people as possible to watch his movie. It is not in his interest then to start a flame war with Marvel fans, which will hurt Shazam the most as DCEU is still the weaker, less established brand.

Everything I've seen so far, including the "stellar early reviews", suggests to me that Captain Marvel is a generic sci-fi movie with the usual MCU jokes. Totally forgettable then.
PS: Yes, the "stellar reviews" are calling it a "sci-fi movie" rather than a CBM, which underscores how the character is a non-entity in the comics world.

  Yes, that is the trick of an integrated cinematic universe. People see even subpar movies like Ant-Man or Doctor Strange because those characters will be in future bigger movies that might interest them much more. In other words, audiences feel that, unless they see all MCU movies, they won't be able to follow the plot in future movies.
  When two movies are far apart, one can obviously wait for the earlier one to be available on streaming or DVD and not see it in the theater, but that is not the case with Captain Marvel and Endgame.

      i mean GREAT my man. I wish I could share other people's enthusiasm for it. But it just wasn't my cup of tea I think. There are some things I liked and some moments I really enjoyed, but overall it just didn't quite land for me. I think its mostly the writing that was bothersome. And some moments where I feel spectacle took priority over things that made sense. I don't want to ruin it for anyone so I will just keep it to myself. But still, as I have said before, I really think DC needs better wwriters. Ezra Miller recently spoke about the Flash movie and was same some stuff that honestly got me pretty excited. I know we harp on movies like Flash and BAtman for taking so long, but personally, I like that they are taking long to really figure out the stories. I just hope it works out for the better

I think most people want to forget about the Snyder era of films because on both sides of the spectrum, anything connected to them just feels somewhat tainted. Whether you are a fan and upset because of how it turned out, or not a fan and just don't want to be reminded of all the frustrations it caused. Idk man. I think maybe the haters are getting to me. Either way, Aquaman I think just wasn't my cup of tea. Im just tired of all the controversy and baggage surrounding this franchise and kind of just want them to start fresh.

I liked the movie although Aquaman was portrayed very inaccurately.
I think the reboot can wait a little as the DCEU still has some potential. Shazam looks good, WW84 could be great and I would happily watch an Aquaman and a Superman sequel. I would definitely support a reboot if another studio was buying DC though. Especially Disney,
Plus it seems like they're already soft rebooting anyway.

Aquaman, mediocre? I call shade.
The movie had everything, a great script and director, awesome scene pacing, and it even brought a new world to the table visually that we really haven't seen on screen, including a setup for an expansive underwater universe. If you call that mediocre, you are smok'in crack.
Momoa did an OK job, wasn't a comic accurate Aquaman and to be honest, could have easily been switched out for another actor and it wouldn't have made a difference. The script and director were the stars in this movie.

    The script was a pull from John's comic story, and it was solid. Again, as I pointed out above, it is not going to please everyone. Momoa's performance was forced, and too 'COWABUNGA' for me. Loved the movie though.

  Aquaman was fun, but overall pretty mediocre. BO numbers don't matter at all, because we've all seen garbage movies making bank before. It means nothing. The movie had big problems, like Momoa thinking he's on modeling shoot on the submarine and when he acquires the Trident (with the five points LOL). The stupid score cards, the forced romance (super contrived), problematic script (to say the least), and uneven acting from Heard. I understand many here adore the film, but objectively speaking, it was not very good.

      BP was barely okay. I really like the MCU, and BP was one of the weakest films in the franchise IMO. The response the movie has gotten (in the U,S) is completely disproportionate (made more money than IW! Oscar nomination?! Really?!!). But I'm not making comparisons to BP. I'm judging Aquaman on its own merits. The script was weak af IMO.

I have a confession to make:

I want Captain Marvel to fail...hard and I'm not sure why. I'm not sexist or a Marvel hater or anything (if you know me you know I often praise Marvel), but I just dislike everything I've seen about that movie. The trailers were boring and generic, the CGI looks video gameish and the lead actress looks wooden and has no charisma. A far cry from Gadot as WW. Yet I see some people acting like the movie looks amazing and I'm like really? Yeah, fanboys gonna fanboy.

On the other hand I'm loving how Shazam is looking. Also looking forward to Endgame.

I feel the same. I'm a fan of the MCU, but Brie is a real turn off for me. She's so wooden and overrated (didn't deserve her Academy award IMO). I agree the movie looks generic, and I agree that she's nowhere as likable or charismatic as Gal. Wishing it to bomb hard. First time I ever wanted a Marvel movie to outright flop.

There are TONS of strong female characters, and many of them have had like a gazillion sequels for their films! People gladly paid to make Wonder Woman pass $800M (I watched that one 3 times). Media has been making false claims, like the film has been bombed by trolls making fake negative reviews on RT... when the movie can't even be reviewed yet! People are just responding a simple poll, on whether they are interested or not in watching that film. But these people are being labeled as "trolls", "misogynists", "manbabies", and a lot more, just because their opinion doesn't fit with the SJW narrative. Will Captain Marvel be good? Maybe. Will Brie Larson shine? Perhaps. Will Goose the cat steal the show? It's likely. The point is: I DON'T CARE. I'll still be skipping that film. But as it seems, you just have to support this movie, because if you don't, then you're a troll.         Dude do you even understand how RT works? Its based on the % of critics what likes the film, they only need to give 3/5 to be counted as fresh, basically a film could only have 3/5 and still that 100% rating on RT. Metacritic is flawed for films because they will take a 3/5 and make it 60/100 even if the site intends 7/10 with that 3/5.
        Oh by the way WW deserves those high scores because its a fantastic film, i myself give it 5/5.

        WW third act wasnt good, the villain wasnt good. Even you agreed that they were a lot of issues with the film, so i cant see how you gave it 5/5. Dont get me wrong, its still a good film. WW was overrated and had the women power movement behind it, with politicians and celebrities backing it up. Which is why it overperformed domestically just like black panther did. Its rated higher than TDK trilogy and infinity war and many more, which i think it didnt deserve. 80% on RT wouldve been more appropriate.

        Totally agree with you, Black Panther and Wonder Woman had their fair share of issues, both of them felt lacking in their third acts, and wonder woman has a forgettable villain. However the thing about those two movies was that they were focused on characters previously introduced or focused on in one way or another, captain marvel seems to be a mary sue character like Rey from star wars which isn't really helping the case, the problem lies with forced diversity, Black widow should have been first in line for a solo movie, they could have worked the plot into a well written spy thriller, however what we're getting instead of that is a character we have no attachment or affection towards, who is also supposedly the most powerful person in the MCU. Make no mistake BP and WW were enjoyable movies, however none of them were oscar worthy, if anything, Infinity war was a far better film than both the former and the latter. But this is only my opinion, you're allowed to disagree with it if you want.

        Actually, a 5/5 means its flawless or at least close to being it. WW had major issues that were important which you couldn't just sweep under the rug. Its a good film, but it doesnt deserve the high praise its getting. I even think MoS was a better film.

        No in reviewing stuff 5/5 isn't flawless, ask any critic and they will say the same, hell even Ebert agreed with that and has giving highly flawed films top praise purely because he loved the film.
        The Dark Knight has some serious issues like how Dent's decent into Two-Face was rushed, Rachel being a woman in a fringe, plot holes like when Batman saves Rachel but leaves Joker at top with the guests doing whatever he pleases, you also have all the stuff Joker does what relies too much on everything working exactly the way needs it to. Its also quite questionable that neither would blow up the other as well. None of this stops The Dark Knight from being a masterpiece though as the good stuff outweighs the bad stuff.
        As for WW well i agree its 3rd isn't as good as the first 2 acts but its not as bad as you're making it out to be. I don't see a problem with the hero fighting the villain in a big battle because well yeah its a superhero film with a woman who can lift tanks what the hell did you expect? Anyway the 3rd act has some real strong points like Steve's death what does a lot for his character and Diana, her reaction to it was epic and her moments debating if she should kill Doctor Poison or not is a strong scene and says a lot about her, her speech after that is also strong and a great moment for Gal and her defeat of Ares is great empowering moment for her character. The 3rd act is flawed sure but i would say its the strongest 3rd act in the DCEU purely for the character work on Diana and Steve.

        I have to disagree with you on WW. It was truly a great film IMO, It had depth and heart, and No Man's Land is literally one of the best Superhero scenes ever. Yeah 3rd act wasn't very good, but it doesn't take away from an otherwise solid movie.

        The movie itself was good, but nothing groundbreaking, it followed a cliched plot structure, which works, and I myself found the movie quite enjoyable. There's a difference between a movie being good and a movie being enjoyable, take the Godfather for example, the movie is good but not many people find it enjoyable because of its length. All in all, liking a movie is quite subjective, what works for me might not work for you and there's nothing wrong with that. That being said marvel movies do tend to get higher ratings due to following a formula that results in good entertainment. Birdman as a movie is much superior than almost anything marvel has put out, but not many laypeople were entertained while watching it.

        Two years ago, we got Wonder Woman - the first Solo female superhero movie in over a decade. It was also a part of the extremely divisive DCEU -

It had a very healthy 96% "looking forward to seeing it" prior to the movie's opening. Even now after all is said and done, it has an entirely admirable 88% rating amongst audiences on RT.

    Because Wonder Woman's marketing was not based on the premise that "women can be heroes too".. WW has been a female hero since the character fiirst appeared in 1941/42. The problem with the MCU's Captain Marvel is that she is a generic, focus-group engineered character designed to reach a certain target audience and take advantage of identity politics. Since she's totally artificial and not grounded in any comics tradition (even usurping a character's name that has never been hers to begin with), Disney has to go with silly marketing lines like the one I mentioned above.

  From the reactions of people who actually saw Shazam, it looks like the script is very strong and the actors really nailed it. I'd say that is probably credible. My biggest concern is with visual quality given that Shazam was a relatively low budget movie. And, yes, marketing has been lacking so far considering that the movie is being released a little over a month from now.
  I also question WB's decision to release it between Captain Marvel and Endgame , which will cut into the movie's legs. Why didnt' they go for a summer release especially considering that Shazam is very much targeted at school kids ?

    Well, I can tell the reason for slow marketing that wb doesn't want to spend millions on their movies especially the one's where they are taking risk.Four of seven new upcoming announces dc movies are low budget one's(Joker, Birds of prey, Shazam, Super pets), Remaining two are sequels of highly profitable WW and SS, Last one is about their most profitable hero aka Batman.Looks like the reason they bring in Walter Hamada was cause of him having success with low budget horror movies which generated a a lot of profit for the studio and not cause he is a great administrator.WB seems scared after BVS and Jl and are hesitating to take big risk.I doubt we would see Flash, GL or Cyborg movies anytime soon.

    Yes, that is the trick of an integrated cinematic universe. People see even subpar movies like Ant-Man or Doctor Strange because those characters will be in future bigger movies that might interest them much more. In other words, audiences feel that, unless they see all MCU movies, they won't be able to follow the plot in future movies.
    When two movies are far apart, one can obviously wait for the earlier one to be available on streaming or DVD and not see it in the theater, but that is not the case with Captain Marvel and Endgame.

        i mean GREAT my man. I wish I could share other people's enthusiasm for it. But it just wasn't my cup of tea I think. There are some things I liked and some moments I really enjoyed, but overall it just didn't quite land for me. I think its mostly the writing that was bothersome. And some moments where I feel spectacle took priority over things that made sense. I don't want to ruin it for anyone so I will just keep it to myself. But still, as I have said before, I really think DC needs better wwriters. Ezra Miller recently spoke about the Flash movie and was same some stuff that honestly got me pretty excited. I know we harp on movies like Flash and BAtman for taking so long, but personally, I like that they are taking long to really figure out the stories. I just hope it works out for the better

  The movie had everything, a great script and director, awesome scene pacing, and it even brought a new world to the table visually that we really haven't seen on screen, including a setup for an expansive underwater universe. If you call that mediocre, you are smok'in crack.
  Momoa did an OK job, wasn't a comic accurate Aquaman and to be honest, could have easily been switched out for another actor and it wouldn't have made a difference. The script and director were the stars in this movie.

I understand many here adore the film, but objectively speaking, it was not very good.

      Totally disagree, except for the Momoa parts. Heard wasn't my favorite either, but the script was solid. It was WAY better than Black Panther...and using your words, BO numbers, and I would add SJW hype, mean nothing. That is why movies are subjective.

        BP was barely okay. I really like the MCU, and BP was one of the weakest films in the franchise IMO. The response the movie has gotten (in the U,S) is completely disproportionate (made more money than IW! Oscar nomination?! Really?!!). But I'm not making comparisons to BP. I'm judging Aquaman on its own merits. The script was weak af IMO.

        Dude, I didn't say I didn't like Aquaman. I actually said it was fun if you look above. I enjoyed the film for what it was, but I don't pretend it didn't have major problems. It's my second fav in the DCEU after WW.

I still remember the thousands of "RIP DCEU" comments when the first infinity war trailer came out but no one said something to shut them down. I guess those weren't trolls or haters but well deserved and fair critique.

Some people are just never satisfied. It's a shame to me that people actually act like this. And I like David Sandberg's reply to Michael John on Twitter about Captain Marvel. Shut that fool up. Smh.
And as for Shazam, absolutely no one needs another Shazam trailer. What we've seen is enough for anyone till the movie release. Media needs to do less just as much as fans do. Be patient. We're just shy of a month out for the film. You really want to know the Shazam story? Go buy the animation origin film or read the comic. Till then, go live life outside of a phone or computer. See what Earth can do to keep you busy.

I have a confession to make:
I want Captain Marvel to fail...hard and I'm not sure why. I'm not sexist or a Marvel hater or anything (if you know me you know I often praise Marvel), but I just dislike everything I've seen about that movie. The trailers were boring and generic, the CGI looks video gameish and the lead actress looks wooden and has no charisma. A far cry from Gadot as WW. Yet I see some people acting like the movie looks amazing and I'm like really? Yeah, fanboys gonna fanboy.
On the other hand I'm loving how Shazam is looking. Also looking forward to Endgame.
I guess I am a troll after all.

  I feel the same. I'm a fan of the MCU, but Brie is a real turn off for me. She's so wooden and overrated (didn't deserve her Academy award IMO). I agree the movie looks generic, and I agree that she's nowhere as likable or charismatic as Gal. Wishing it to bomb hard. First time I ever wanted a Marvel movie to outright flop.

It's funny how articles like this get clicks by calling people "trolls". I've seen shill media try to justify Larson's feminazi crusade with stupid titles like "Brie Larson can't save womankind - but she's doing her best". Saving womankind from what exactly???? And while Alita's team gave a young girl hands, Brie Larson (after having signed a $5M contract, no less) asks people to donate money so that girls can have the great opportunity to watch her film (and send that money directly to the box office of HER film). There's absolutely NOTHING new about Captain Marvel that has not been done before a hundred times. There are TONS of strong female characters, and many of them have had like a gazillion sequels for their films! People gladly paid to make Wonder Woman pass $800M (I watched that one 3 times). Media has been making false claims, like the film has been bombed by trolls making fake negative reviews on RT... when the movie can't even be reviewed yet! People are just responding a simple poll, on whether they are interested or not in watching that film. But these people are being labeled as "trolls", "misogynists", "manbabies", and a lot more, just because their opinion doesn't fit with the SJW narrative. Will Captain Marvel be good? Maybe. Will Brie Larson shine? Perhaps. Will Goose the cat steal the show? It's likely. The point is: I DON'T CARE. I'll still be skipping that film. But as it seems, you just have to support this movie, because if you don't, then you're a troll. I've watched TONS vids on youtube (from both male and female youtubers) that have been very vocal against the sort of politics being handled in this film... but I guess those female youtubers are also "misogynist manbabies". But God forbid someone does the reverse, and starts calling troll or worse to everyone who is overexited by how "great" this film is, or how it will save women! Because that doesn't fit the narrative

This has been nothing short of a promotion fail! Since announced 2 yrs ago and last comic Con to date there has been only 2 teasers trailers and yet to be released official fukf length trailer and it is out in theaters first week of April thats literally 5 weeks away ! He has done more promoting Disney s Capt Marvel that Shazam ! I mean wtf .....wake up WB ! Do they want this movie to fail or at the least get outside the comic bubble to others masses ?
