James Wan weighs in on The Trench film

If there was any doubt that The Trench is an actual film in development, James Wan seems to have put that to bed on Friday night.

Responding to a fan's general comment on the potential The Trench film, Aquaman director James Wan chimed in saying, "During the early stages of preproduction, I fell in love with the Trench and its designs... and secretly hoped to explore this world further/more." This isn't to say, however, that the film is for sure happening as Wan added, "(Now, I'm not confirming or denying this project ;)."

It seems pretty clear now that The Trench is actually a film in development. That being said, that doesn't mean it will definitely arrive in movie theaters. Films go in and out of development constantly, so this may indeed just be an idea being kicked around at the moment.

The information first appeared on Friday in a report from The Hollywood Reporter. According to sources speaking with the trade publication, Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald are currently on tap to write the screenplay. Wan and Peter Safran are set as producers on what is being labeled a modestly budgeted film.

No word as of yet on a potential release date.

Agreed 100%. However, most of us I think just feel WB/DC Films are just throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks. I think the idea of a trench movie sounds great but after you've completed atleast 2 aquaman movies and a plethora of other main stream characters movies too. I really dont understand their upcoming film slate, it confuses the hell out of me. Trench movie before a MOS sequel or new supes movie?, a bit strange.

  I don't think this movie have anything to do with wb.This movie seems like James Wan idea.And, WB have no reason to say no to him.Also, You can't blame wb for wanting to have small budget movies cause of high profit ratio here after how jl flopped and BvS and MOS disappointed.
  Also, A MOS sequel will cost over $300 million(Marketing+Production) while this movie at best will cost less than $50 million so no reason to be surprised.

      Many of the Trench monsters on the boat in Aquaman weren't CGI at all. I doubt 'The Trench' would be underwater, it will probably be fishermen or a small town trying to survive a few of these creatures.

      Possibly. Also, the writers on this project worked on a submarine movie; a submarine could be another relatively cheap setting. (Hell, they could re-use the interior from Aquaman)

      Right but a scene like Aquaman/Mera chased by 1000 monsters underwater costs a ton of money for a few minutes. This project doesn't sound like it can afford that.
      Maybe it can explore the lore/history of the Trench instead.

      We don't have any real idea what the budget might be. My thinking is that this could be a lower budget blockbuster. Say limited to $100 million. Part of Marvel's success is they make most of their movies for about $150. WB/DC have gone for excessive budgets and lost money because they could not hit it out of the park.

      What? WB/DC have only lost money on *one* movie out of 6. The DCEU has been incredibly successful for them, that is why exactly they are even contemplating spin-offs like this.
      As for the budget, it is reported to be small so well below $100M. James Wan-produced horror movies are done for around $20M.

      The standard in Hollywood is not the same as in a normal business. The goal is not simply to make a profit. If a studio spends $250 million and makes $50 that is not a success. They decide via a lot of research how much a property *could* make and that is the goal. Achieve it and you are a success.
      DC/WB have had 2 movies that qualify as successes Aquaman and Wonder Woman. They have sadly also had a number of movies that fell short by a few hundred million each. Money was made but far, far too little.
      At this stage the budget is at best a projection. I know what his previous movies were like but this will be different. Aquaman succeeded in part because of fantastic spectacular visuals. This movie will need a fair amount of the same and that costs. Expectations on the part of the audience are also quite important to Hollywood.

    Well ah about that budget? It depends on how they go about it but cgi is not cheap. Most horror movies have very tiny effects budgets. Just at a guess this sounds like a $100 million project depending on how they approach it of course. But with Wan and the success of Aquaman this seems like a pretty safe bet.

Aquaman still didn’t make as much as BvS in the domestic box office. James Wan has started the Transformer movies of DC. It’s crazy how well it did IMHO since everything was so extremely obviously CGI or so painfully obviously a set... like at times I thought they forgot to edit the scene. The world market ate it up and they’ll continue shoving it down our throats like Hollywood does with Transformers.

I really had a weird feeling when they released it in China first to bolster sales. Time will tell. I’m sure they’ll leave it for four more weeks just to have a record breaker on their hands. Not impressive. Story still sucked.

      Blockbusters always stay longer in theaters because they still pull in money, Aquaman is not getting special treatment. Also, Aquaman been in theaters for only 6 weeks now. The only blockbuster superhero movie that i can remember that had a short run in theaters was BvS, and it was because it was dead in the water around fourth week.

It also kind of proves my point that Aquaman is more impressive globally than domestically. US audiences aren’t in love. People that don’t speak English are blown away by the visuals though.       How? Were talking about an aquaman movie making more domestically than a BvS movie featuring 3 of DCs biggest and most popular characters. It doesn't need another week to surpass Bvs since it just did today with another 2m+ weekend, which bvs couldnt do after 4 weekswhile aquaman is still holding on. The reason they didnt leave bvs longer in theaters was because it wasnt bringing enough revenue( under a million in its fourth or fifth weekend.

      330m+ isnt love from a 70m opening weekend? Do you know how good its legs are? MOS opened with 128m and finished with 290, SS opened with 133m and finished with 325m, BvS opened with 166m and finished with 330m. Just because its overperforming overseas doesnt mean that they arent "in love" domestically. Coming from a failing franchise, Aquaman is doing phenomenally great. Transformers wishes they could make 300m+ domestically.

      The dceu never been good with story telling. The only good movies that had somewhat good story telling was MoS and WW... SS, BvS and JL had terrible story telling and aquaman had a very simple story, but it delivered in other departments unlike the other three.

      Just tells me the same people that popped the opening weekend cherry eventually went to see Aquaman. I saw BvS opening night. I saw MoS opening weekend. I saw SS the first week following opening weekend. I saw Aquaman in January because I was bored on a Tuesday. The money is trickling in because it didn’t have a big boom in that first weekend?
      And if my stepbrother knows what he’s talking about ( and maybe you know the dynamics of studio/theater split...I do appreciate what you’re teaching me, so don’t take my negative tone about Aquaman as negative in your direction), the first weekend mainly goes to the studio, where as the fourth weekend onward pretty much goes to the theater which means Aquaman met BvS, but the money trickling in is helping theaters more than DC and WB.

      Most movies doesnt have huge opening weekends during Christmas, but im pretty sure aquaman was never going to have a huge opening either. Your stepbrother is mostly right, but WB already made the big bucks, so the money the money it makes now isnt really a problem for wb since aquaman made about 2m this weekend. Still, WB already made 200m + profit just with aquaman, which is double what bvs made them. Aquaman had a smaller budget with a smaller marketing campaign, it made 400m more than bvs overseas. Also, WB is looking at the bigger picture, Aquaman was a big joke prior the movie, and it made more than batman, superman and ww sharing the screen, its the highest grossing DC movie in history.

      I still hope domestic matters more than global. I’m also glad Aquaman didn’t topple The Dark Knight domestically. I’m glad that Aquaman did well though because I think they looked at this as one of the tests on whether to keep moving forward. A lot was done wrong prior to this. They did do something right, I’ll give them that, but I really do hope this doesn’t become their new bench mark/formula. It didn’t feel too far off of Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern design/villein wise. It didn’t feel too well developed character wise. It just didn’t feel complete over all, but the fact that it did so well just means it wasn’t made for me. I didn’t like Avitar and the CGI really made me think of that. We will see what DC does as time keeps going on.

      Yes, domestic will always be more important than overseas since the studio get a higher cut, but when you get 700m+ overseas, its starting to get as profitable as a 300m domestic income. China is the only place where theaters get 70% of the income, leaving wb with only 30%, but 30% of 300m on china is almost 100m, which is pretty good. BvS only made 90m in china, and when you take 70% from that then youre left with peanuts. When you factor in inflation, TDK and TDKR are still bigger than aquaman, especially since they were release without 3d as well and sold more tickets with a smaller market. I still think MoS and WW to be better films than aquaman, but DC needed a film like aquaman to shake things up in terms of action and fun and comedy, it really felt like a superhero movie.

This also explains why a theater would continue showing slower movies if they get a larger cut of the fewer ticket sales. They must be making a lot with the slower popularity of Aquaman.

    I am not, have never been, and probably never will be an Aquaman fan. If you think that scene where Aquaman leaves his mom to go get the trident was good, you have strange tastes. It looked awful, felt awkward, and seemed like a place holder until they got a better idea. Aquaman isn’t doing well because it’s a great movie. It just has visuals like Avitar, which also was a shit movie. Even after it broke records, it’s barely talked about in today’s pop culture and isn’t referenced because it was just visually pleasing. No one cares about it. Aquaman had the same dumb “Martha” line practically. “Mom??” Fuck me if DC steps back from Batman and Superman for Aquaman.

    You need to realize how things work.First of all, Studios only get 1/2th from domestic, 1/3th from international and 1/4th from Chinese box office. Second, You are only counting production budget.What about advertisement budget?.........With advertisement budget, It cost over $350 million to develop.If you don't factor in money from home media, Tv rights etc. then it would obviously be a flop.
    This is the reason why you have new SS and WW films but not a new superman movie.

      Those numbers are about as good as we can estimate. One new big wildcard these days is product placement. They almost never give out the numbers but they can easily be in the 10s of millions. MOS had a very big slice of that pie which helped it at least turn a decent little profit.
      If you start talking about the long term income (TV and such) then really no movie actually flops. Big movies like MOS or JL make fair money regardless of how they did in the theater.
      But as a movie buff I still prefer to judge a film by how well it did in the theaters. If it can make 2.5 times its budget it probably turned a profit and was at least a moderate success.

No offense but what a dumb meme. Warner may or may not make a cheap horror movie produced by James Wan, who has an excellent track record at the box office. It would cost about as much as the paycheck Cavill got for BvS. Newsflash: Warner produces movies to make money, and horror is easy money at the moment.
Warner is already making a ton of DC movies, what is it with these hysterical fans who want 20 superhero movies by next year - or at least their very own favorite superhero - and *also* don't want those movies to be rushed. And 'The Trench' wouldn't compete with a Flash or MoS2 or whatever; again, it would be much, much cheaper.

    I totally understand that issue. The thing we have to remember is that "WB" consists of various divisions and subsidiaries. So when we see "Warner Brothers is making a [insert property] movie," it doesn't automatically mean some things are more important than others.
    For example, this Trench movie would most likely be produced by New Line Cinema (the studio responsible for The Conjuring) in association with DC Films and distributed by Warner Bros. That's just a guess though.
    There are green lights being activated all over WB. For all we know, a new Superman trilogy is being discussed behind closed doors. He's not exactly a lucrative property right now, unfortunately. Plus, there are a bunch of other cool DC characters coming to the screen in the near future. There are ideas on paper all over the place. And some end up getting tweeted about.

Honestly i'm ok with this film being made. End of the day this being made because of AM's success, yes i would rather have a new Superman film but The Trench was being made regardless on the status of any other film because Aquaman was a big success and WB want to milk that, this isn't being instead of a Superman film because a SM film was never being made anyway, The Trench could not exist and it wouldn't change anything with other films and characters.

Honestly i'm looking forward to seeing a film based on best scene in AM, i love underwater horror stuff and there isn't enough decent budget films based on underwater monsters.

There is talk of it being a lower budget horror, with a Trench attack focused on a single subermarine or ship. I feel Aquaman may show up at the end to save the day or it may be a prequel. I'm not totally against the film being made, however i really feel DC, need to focus on their main heroes and get them all back in the publin eye. We need movies for Superman, The Flash, GL corp, Martian Manhunter etc...All heroes capable of spawning their own franchises and spinoffs. Even Batman could have his own franchise with all the goings on in Gotham but still connect to the wider DC universe. WB holds all the Ace cards they just need to play them right.

Look does it sound weird and unnecessary? Yes. Does it seem like WB made a billion and is overreaching? Yes. But what if this turns out to be a dope horror movie? For sure if no main characters are in it its not gonna necessarily be an amazing superhero movie but it could be good. the fact that some idiots on here are actually interested in this movie shows me how many gullible dumb sheep are in the world , like some of you retards are so clueless. Im all for WB trying to make money but they haven't earned the right to just start milking shit after all the bullshit they have done in the past. Lets not forget JL came out before Aquaman they still haven't fixed nothing about that just because Aquaman was a success doesn't mean they have the right to start jumping the gun and making spin offs especially ones nobody is asking for right now. We still gotta fix MOS 2 , Flash , GL corps and a host of other characters we need to prioritize before we start going all over the place. So if the Joker makes a billion then what they gonna make a spin off on that too and the fact that they don't even have a plan for the cinematic universe or to find a way to bring the Justice League back together in a movie is concerning to me. I love all these characters and Im happy that they finally getting their shine on but the appeal of these movies to me was seeing how they would all come together. Its sad that the CW has a better plan and structure then the actual parent company smh.

I agree. I'm all for solo movies for each character, that can stand on their own, with just little nods and ties to the connected universe. However, as they move forward and hopefully continue the success of Aquaman, i would hope their is at least a basic outline for the Universe and how to build towards a JL 2.

If you want to create a spin off using the trench, connect the earth's core ( that we were introduced to in AM) to the Justice league. Do anything, really just start the movie with a small reference to a pilot crashing in coast city and the body missing.

Use the trench as the unwilling participants in a plot of an entity presenting himself in the form akin to ego from Guardians vol 2. Have Black Manta and Orm overthrow Atlantis, and steal forbidden atlantean technology ebedded within the sea floor under the throne.. Have Luthor Deathstroke, a with the assistance of Circe or another Amazonian that has a beef with paradise island, go and steal the staff of Hippotlya (cant spell it from memory.)

Give flash and cyborg smaller but justified roles. Show them in a quick montage working together to hone in their skills. Then have them assigned to save coast city. Shazam will show up against the word of superman, who is distracted by the fact there is a child fighting alongside him and uses Robin as a reference as to why it is a bad idea. Bats will be in the middle of an investigation, when supes tries to recruit him, be he is being reluctant.

The twist, will be the entity of the island never existed, in fact sort of like oz there is a man behind the curtains. He was created by the meteor shower that killed the dinosaurs and drove them to the earths core. Over the years he has started wars, influenced humanity and cause horrific atrocities from the shadows. He used a power source from the earth's core to harness the trench and put on the persona of a living embodiment of dinosaur island itself. This man will be revealed as vandal savage. He got the league of villains together, supes will somehow be incapacitated, and the league will realize they were too late, except for batman who has been investigating this the entire time, and had contingencies in place, and in reality had Vandal by the balls the whole time.

I think it would be cool of a villain actually saw ahead of time, batman is always the bigger threat.
