‘Shazam!’ long-range tracking points to $45M opening

The first Shazam! box office forecast calls for another solid opening for DC Films. Box Office Pro has the film opening at $45M, though it could land anywhere between $40M and $60M.

It’s important to note that this long-range tracking is based on Box Office Pro’s models. It is not the widely-used industry tracking that is reported on by the trades.

Shazam! will not land on those tracking boards until it is three weeks from its April 5 release.

As long as Warner Bros. didn’t overspend on the film, an opening between $40M and $60M will be just fine. This is a smaller scale adventure about a lesser known property.

As we saw with Aquaman, these movies can find their audience over time if they’ve got the goods.

Idk what’s going on with the New Line/DC marketing on this. Anyone else feel the trailer is long overdue at this point, especially considering the movie opens in April? What are they waiting for?

    I guess I wasn't familiar with the term "extended tv spot" then. To me that was a trailer. 50 second of pretty much new footage was pretty good. Probably wanting a 2min+ video is the main problem (not saying you have a problem, not attacking you) I'm just saying it's a problem and they end up telling the whole story in the trailers

      I just watched it again and the teaser didnt show much out of 50 secs. 10 seconds were recycled, then another 10 where he tries to buy beer, then another 15 where he tries to buy real estate. Thats like counting the endgame teasers as trailers, even if they showed absolutely nothing.

      TV Spots are usually 30 secs and an extended TV Spot is around 1 min. A proper full show trailer is 2 mins+.

maybe if they were marketing the movie better , 2 months away and we still haven't gotten a new trailer and they will have competition being sandwiched between 2 marvel movies. It would be a shame cuz I actually think this might be a good movie with what I have seen so far DC needs to market this movie with the same confidence they marketed Aquaman they may have another hit on their hands but we need a new trailer already.

      MoS was a hit so BvS happened. BvS was a hit so JL happened. Cavill starred as Superman in three movies, the most successful run for the character since the 80's. Warner should developed other heroes now that they are on a hot streak.
      It is JL that floppped and changed their plans. You seem to have a problem with causality. Don't group the one flop with the movies that made a ton of profits for Warner.
      And even then, Affleck had personal problems and without them it is very possible that his Batman movie (as actor and director/writer) would be finishing production already.

  DCEU has grossed 5 billion dollars dso far. You can make a huge argument that it should be far more because BVS and JL should both be billion dollar successes, but without a doubt in a a world where the transformers universe is falling apart, the dark universe is falling apart, etc the DCEU is without a doubt a success. Hell even bad movies like Suicide Squad made huge bank for WB's.

WB needs to rally for themselves. Shazam! fans and most DC fans are already committed. They need to be appealing to the general audience with MARKETING. That means trailers to get people excited.

Have you seen Captain Marvel marketing?....Disney is doing a fantastic job while New Line cinema have barely done anything.Also, Captain Marvel have the edge cause it is Marvel's first female led superhero movie and cause Marvel is a trusted brand.People will go watch their movies regardless of the quality.Dc doesn't have the luxury cause of Hack Snyder garbage.It will take a lot of time for DC to earn people trust like Marvel have.

Let's not forget that Aquaman was projected to make less than $250 million in entire run but it ended up making over $300 million cause of the hype on domestic box office.If Shazam is great then it can also end up with $200 million at domestic box office which is fine.For now, It is tracking for $144,000,000.

The strong marketing campaign will begin little before Captain Marvel hits the theaters I think. Also, I think that film will have a big opening (mainly bacause SJW)... and an even bigger drop. According to some reviews, the cat steals the show. THE CAT! I really don’t think people (not even fans) will see this twice just to watch a freakin’ cat, but you never know.
On the other hand, it seems shazam has been getting better reviwes than Aquaman. I really don’t think it will open with less than $75-80M

I have to chuckle at the people suggesting Captain Marvel could bomb. That is not even in the realm of possibility. Will it make a billion? Maybe, maybe not. But that is the worst it could do.

People don't care about the character? Have you not been paying attention to the vast majority of the MCU? The public does not need to know a single thing except it is another Marvel movie. And since Marvel is in the title even the terminally dense should understand that.

Shazam looks like fun. And frankly if you give me fun, costumes and some good fights then I am happy. If you actually bring the comcs to life then I am very happy.
