Warner Bros. sets summer 2021 release dates for ‘The Batman’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’; Affleck Out

January 30, 2019

Warner Bros. has set The Batman for June 25, 2021 and The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021.

Deadline reports that Ben Affleck will not reprise the title role in The Batman for director Matt Reeves. Affleck then hinted he’ll be a spectator come 2021.

Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see @MattReevesLA vision come to life. https://t.co/GNgyJroMIO
— Ben Affleck (@BenAffleck) January 31, 2019

Affleck’s departure was expected, as Reeves plans to focus on a younger Dark Knight.

It’s also interesting to see next Suicide Squad film called The Suicide Squad and not “Suicide Squad 2.” James Gunn is writing the film with an eye to direct.

It’s been reported that the film will stand on its own, but there’s been some thought that it could still tie into David Ayer’s 2016 film.

We will have to see just how much Gunn’s movie will call back to the first Suicide Squad, if at all.

I just can’t think of a known chops heavy actor at the right age other than Jake Gyllenhaal....and while I love Jake I kind of want someone unexpected....Aaron Taylor Johnson?.... idk all I do know is I’ve been saying forever I want John Lithgow to play the Ventriloquist

Yeah, like when Ben was rumored to be out, and I've been saying so ever since before JL, and you disagreed. Like when you insisted that JL was all Snyder, and you were wrong. Stop being a contrarian! (Cavil's also out).

If there’s no reason to assume something that has not been confirmed or has even been outright denied, why assume it? That’s just not reasonable. However, I’ll try not to fall for PR lies anymore... But you’d think they would’ve announced that now since they just announced Affleck, not to mention the fact both WB and Henry’s agent denied those reports the day the were made... Also I never said JL would be “all Snyder,” I just believed the lies that it was going to stick with his vision and not be touched too much... As for Affleck’s departure, you’re misrepresenting that; for some time now I’ve accepted he seemed to be leaving, but he appears to have been fluctuating in his commitment ever since JL, so at the time I thought he still was, it’s entirely possible he actually was considering staying at that point still.

Aiden Turner would be a good fit but not famous enough. I like Jamie Dornan.
But in a perfect world, Eddie Redmayne after 8 months of heavy weights at the gym.

Don’t really know how much younger this Batman will be since Ben was pretty old. Is he going to be in his prime or in his year one era? (not specifically referring to the year one comic, just a newbie batman). If it’s the latter I’d say maybe Liam Hemsworth? He sort of looks the part. If it’s the former I would’ve liked to have seen Jake Gyllenhaal but he’s Mysterio now.

As for Affleck, ah well. We all knew this was coming. Some people liked him. Some didn't. I mostly liked him but I am excited to see a another fresh start. People need to feel the batman high again. I hope Reeves can deliver. There is also a big rumor going around that WB is doing an animated Batman Beyond movie set to come out in 2022. Sort of like DC's spider verse I would guess

there are some rumors on reddit... Cavill and WB started renegotiating late in 2018; also, there are rumors of a MoS2 being fast tracked due to AM success
I've recently seen a post where they were talking about the upcoming slate, and they DID say both Batman and SS were going to be released in 2021, along with AQM2...

Honestly, this is down to Ben and his commitment, or lack thereof. WB clearly never expected he'd give up so soon. Now they have to change course.
Honestly, I don't give a fuck about Batfleck anymore. He never had a solo film, was an insult to the character and Ben clearly didn't even care. So for me, There's Bale, and then Reeves' reboot. That's 9 years apart. I can live with that.

I mean he didn’t really give up. He had a lot on his plate himself. It’s also hard to stay enthusiastic when all the effort you put in was ripped to shreds. Before BvS came out he did seem like he cared.

It was a mistake to hire such a high profile actor/director with marital and drinking problems to begin with. They need to hire someone who really needs Batman, who will give his all to the roll and be the studio's bitch.

Affleck is 11 years older than Cavill and is hitting that age where putting on that much muscle is hard unless you’re Dwayne Johnson. Not to mention that personal life hit the shitter for a long while, and he’s just now putting the pieces back together.

Nope. There are DOZENS of guys in their 40s and 50s who don't whine when they have to train 10-15 hours per week. Look at Jackman, or most of the Expandable crew. This is just Affleck and him being lazy.
Listen, when it comes to our jobs, we have to perform, period. NONE of us get away with saying "sorry boss, I'm not doing it... please don't do anything, I have issues".
"Ahh, okay son... you have personal issues, you don't have to perform, it's all good".
I mean, ffs, why do we keep making excuses for these privileged MILLIONAIRES? He got a divorce? Just like a MILLION other people did just yesterday. Not ONE of those people gets a pass at work.
You can bring up his alcoholism, but honestly, that's completely on him.

Even if the next film is still connected to the DCEU, it will be easy enough to pretend it isn't with a new actor, and an iteration that doesn't kill and focuses on detective work/intellect.

Completely expected but still slightly sad news. Ben Affleck did well with what he had but like Cavill, never really got the material he needed.
Glad that after years of speculation that Affleck himself got to announce the news. Now he can move on, the studio can move on, the director can move forward and we can look forward to a brand new Batman.
