The Batman Reportedly Scheduled for 2021 or 2022 Release; Jack O'Connell Not in Talks for Title Role

It's been a busy couple of weeks for rumors and reports pertaining to Matt Reeves' The Batman. Today, a new report at Forbes clarifies what is actually going on as it relates to when the film will start production, when it could hit theaters, how many villains it may have, and just how attached Jack O'Connell is or isn't to the title role.

Nearly two weeks ago, The Hollywood Reporter mentioned a November 2019 start to principal photography. Reeves had previously stated his goal to start shooting this spring or summer. THR's updated production timetable had some thinking there was still hope of seeing The Batman in late 2020, but that's not going to happen.

Forbes reports that 2020 absolutely is not going to happen and The Batman is tentatively scheduled for release in 2021 but could be pushed back another year to 2022. Summer 2021 appears to be the most likely landing spot, but the situation is fluid, up to and including the production start date which is not guaranteed to be November.

There is no official start date for principal photography at this time. It will be in the latter half of 2019 at the earliest, but could also begin in 2020 depending on a number of factors including when Warner Bros. wants to release the film.

Jack O'Connell has been a fixture of casting rumors for the next big-screen Batman for several months. His name came up again this week, but according to Forbes, no discussions have taken place between Warner Bros. and O'Connell regarding The Batman. It's possible his name has been mentioned internally by the studio and/or Reeves, but that would be as far as it goes at this stage. O'Connell may ultimately play Batman, but it's still way too early to tell.

Earlier this week, it was rumored that there would be another villain in The Batman besides Penguin. Forbes reports it will be more than that with Penguin being one of a few villains in Reeves' film.

The keyword from Forbes in all of this is patience, both for fans and the studio. DC Films boss Walter Hamada isn't rushing anything. There are other projects in development, like Supergirl and Batgirl, that could end up in front of or behind The Batman on WB's slate. The studio is still deciding how its future DC projects will connect with one another, as well as the previously-released films of the DCEU.

Understandable, since now Wonder Woman and Aquaman are hits. The studio doesn't care for a shared universe. It's clearly no longer on the agenda.

      Henry and Ben aren't gone unless WB officially states. So hold your guns and focus on the upcoming movies already announced and in production. One damn mistake was the WB corporate logo branding on the JL.

        Disappointments yes, but many fans actually liked Affleck's version of Batman. I was really hoping for a Batfleck movie, because his version of Batman was grittier than Christian Bale's.

        Ben’s final appearance could still be in Birds of Prey. I know that could confuse audience if Reeves has all new younger Bruce for his trilogy. But it could still be flashback or exist in its own different universe. I’ll be sad to see Ben and Cavill go, but they still could cameo one more time to fill out their contracts before Snyder’s DCEU is completely finished.

        Well...reading between the lines and still interpreting the likely outcome without being sure.... I don't think it's an advisable approach. Both the manager's tweet and WB's tweet clearly do not point to him being fired. It was just sources writing up stuff to gain hits. The studio is not making a superman movie anytime soon. If you just look up the slate until 2020. studio has four movies(3 already in post production). Secondly Batman isn't getting a release until 2021 and there has been no official announcement of start date for production yet and casting.

  Wonder Woman and Aquaman are, of course, in this shared universe. Warner/DC just leave a lot of creative freedom to their writers and directors without forcing them to follow a lame 5-year plan with pointless cameos and crossovers - unlike some other franchises.

No rush for Batman is a sign that they want to release other projects and release these other projects under good guidance and direction. Shazam is next and they're easter eggs in the movie that pertain to Bats and Supes...The shared universe has been established. After that is WW84 which is already connected to the universe. I believe Birds of Prey may hint or have Easter eggs.

I have heard rumors Catwoman is also going to be in it. It is going to take place 14 years prior to JL, which means Batfleck is out, with an emphasis on his detective skills and fighting techniques.

    Well I agree, they should write off the whole MOS/BvS/JL/Snyder debacle as another universe. I mean Snyder based his Batman off of Frank Miller's older, angry batman and Miller's books took place in a universe amalgamation of Earth 31 and something else, I can't remember. The whole DCEU currently is tainted with Snyder's vision, even Aquaman's movie referenced it, so it is a problem across the board until they do a reboot, or write it away, either in Flashpoint style, or another universe.
    I do like all the other rumored angles, especially him being younger.

  I don't know why people are buying into prequel idea. It's ridiculously stupid as it will only limit the creative freedom. Snyder wanted to kill Batfleck in JL2, but for me, he died in JL. I don't want to see that Tony Stark wannabe again. Reeves' needs to start fresh, and forget the events of BVS-JL. I don't want Batman to be a killer, or stupid in any timeline.

        They are trying to separate matt Reeves bat as much as they can from batflecks batman. They keep pushing the date on this project for over a year now, the script still isn't complete and we know absolutely nothing yet. They realized that they dont need Batman at this time since aquaman just hit a billion with WW84 up next.

    Yes. It’s cost effective and logistically easier to film trilogy back to back to back and release a year apart like LotR. Batman is bankable property. They can save over 300 million shooting them all at once. Plus actors only need to get in shape once and marketing cost go down when they don’t have to remind audiences every 3 years about story.

      That'd be great if its a trilogy filmed back to back. It would more than make up for the wait. However, I really hope Jack o Connel is not their Bruce. He just doesnt look the part for me. Say what you will about Affleck but he had the looks and the build to pull off a very believable Bruce. He just needed more to work with. Its a shame we probably won't see him in the role again. Although until its confirmed I'm not counting him out yet.

    I think that theyre still trying to figure out what to do with the character since affleck wont be returning, while they let other lesser known heroes shine. Aquaman is proof that they dont need Batman at the moment, and yes, it'll most likely be a trilogy.

      To me, Aquaman is proof that there is a massive audience there, willing to turn out for DC movies. I think all the DC characters could be as successful with the right story for them and a director who gets the character and has the right vision. This is especially true for Batman and even Superman. If Reeves delivers the most comic accurate version of Batman to date and the film has a great story, it will easily make a billion dollars, no question about it. As i said the audience is there, DC just has to put out well made films, with comic accurate(within reason), versions of the characters and they will make money.

It's understandable considering how mess of a 'Snyderverse' was. Every film released after a Snyder film had to deal with burden of 'saving DCEU', and barrage of being a DCEU film. It's unimaginable pressure for studio and directors, Wan was smart enough to give only a slight hint of DCEU (wish he didn't) instead of trying ways to connect it to larger universe, same with Patty. Nobody would willingly want to associate themselves with this mess. I hope Reeves is given permission to not care about Snyderverse, either.
It's way long to be honest, but I trust in Reeves the way I trusted on Patty and Wan. So, hopefully, the wait will be worth it.

  Since you mentioned about the association how do you account for Wonder Woman and Aquaman being credited with Snyder yet? One was a major critical hit and the other a major BO hit. The only mess created was when studio wanted to brand their corporate logo on the movies starting from Suicide Squad. JL was the worst hit with Whedon/Eflman on board following director's exit citing personal tragedy.
  You do mention about Patty and Wan, why skip Snyder when he worked on MoS(under Nolan's blessing) and technically brought a movie closer in reception to Wan's Aquaman. This sort of selective bashing is where the problem is at. Reeves will do wonders if his work isn't branded likewise by the studio. I think the on and off negotiations that took place between him and studio was linked to the aspect of more creative control.

    Aquaman is sitting at 65% (not that I care about it) compared to MOS' 56%. And, MOS didn't have to deal with the bad press, bad image, and negativity due to movies like MOS, BVS, SS, JL unlike Aquaman.
    More importantly, audience responded positively to Aquaman (after disastrous JL), hence, it crossed a billion and MOS finished at 660M despite higher budget and bigger brand name.
    Snyder only got credit because of the pre determined legal contractual obligations, WB aren't stupid enough to give him credit after mercilessly booting him out in middle of a film.

Armie Hammer, please. Literally, anybody can play Hal Jordan. If rumors of old Hal and young Jon are true, then Armie is already out of race for GL. DC can tie him up for next 10 years, and he ticks every box to potentially become the most definitive Batman ever. He's too good to be missed out on.

I'd been fine with Ben back as Batman. I just think he needs someone to install some confidence back in him and the role he signed on for.
I enjoyed many parts of his Batman in BvS. His Bruce was good, and his Batman was great. But in JL he was awful. He just didn't seem to care.
Hopefully it is Ben and Matt Reeve's brings the best out of him. Get him back to a Batman physique and make him want to be Batman again. Ben seemed so excited that he was playing Batman before BvS got flushed down the toilet by critics.
If Reeve's does stick with Ben's older Batman, I would like to see him team up with Dick Grayson/Nightwing played by Zac Efron. Efron has the acting chops, the physique and the looks to make a success of Dick Grayson/Nightwing. Efron is also athletic outside of acting. I could imagine him wanting do as many of his own stunts as possible, which could spur Ben on a bit more.

  I don't think Ben showed nearly enough emotions to be called good as Bruce. He did nail the rich jerk part during ceremony sequence, but that was it. He wasn't intelligent, he wasn't complex enough. It seemed like he had completely transformed into a jerk, a mad man who would do anything (even kill) to do the job with no moral values. In the comics, he's actually a very deep, complex, emotional, incredibly smart (possibly smartest), caring human being, who acts like a jerk/playboy in public to hide his alter ego's identity. There's so much to explore with the character as we saw in Batman Begins, by far the best origin superhero film ever made. Bale nailed Bruce Wayne with his sheer acting skills.

    Fair enough. I think people have their own interpretation of how Bruce and Batman should be played on film. Not everyone will agree. DC, WB, comic writers, directors and fans will all disagree on something. I enjoyed Ben as Bruce/Batman. I know others didn't. You can't please everyone.
    I was never a fan of Batman Begins if i'm being honest. I re-watched it last year and found it to be better than i remember though. But Its a film i won't go out of my way to watch.

  Yes. Efron is perfect Dick Grayson, especially to age appropriate Batfleck. If Reeves goes with younger Bruce, it hurts using Efron a bit but I still think he’s the best actor for the job.

Some website lists Jack O'Connell has being only 5'8". Is this true? If we are talking about a teenage Bruce Wayne/Batman, then I'm cool with it. If we are talking about a Batman in his mid 20's, then no. I don't like the idea of Batman being short like Michael Keaton. Michael Keaton is a very good actor, but too darn short to be Batman. When Keaton had the role, I believe he was shorter than everyone except for Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny Devito. Possibly Kim Basinger, if she weren't wearing heels.

O'Connell is my #1 choice. He may be 5'8, but he has the physique of a fighter when he is beefed up, has proven himself a fine actor, and has an intensity to his eyes that would work well for someone like Bruce Wayne who is doing his level best to hide a thing as intense as the Batman. WB: Back the truck up to his house with the money and beg.

  Joss is a much, MUCH better director/writer then Wan, and leagues better than Snyder, who might just possibly be one of the worst directors in recent memory. Aquaman, while enjoyable, was not a great movie, and neither was FF7. I believe Joss would've made a better movie if he were to direct it.

        If you still can't understand how it can be so detrimental to a film-maker's singular vision and who was more responsible for this fiasco there is no helping I can do. The studio should have never rushed such a tentpole if they could not have pulled it decently in six months. Snyder should have been brought back after recouping. The last act CGI was so horrendous which hurt the movie that probably could have been fixed with ample post production and editing time. But the studio decided to go for their branding on corporate terms dissing fans.

Honestly,no matter who will be casted as the new Batman, he will get hate just like Affleck got before. This is a loop for anybody who plays this role. Remember how Affleck got so much hate and now people hold him like he is the only Batman? The same thing happened to Bale. Remember how Bale dominated all ranking as "the best " and how many people requested him to return as Batman? Now,Affleck got so much love instead of backlash,but Bale suddenly got so much hate instead of love just because people fully accepted Affleck. Now, just imagine all those hate toward to the new actor,will eventually came back to Affleck one day. Affleck will definitely suffer the Internet attack if he dropped the cape. How many people praised him or love him right now,will eventually be a payback for what those fans did to new actor. Bale has experienced it. Affleck will experience it, very soon.   Not necessarily. The internet hate Affleck got was because it was Ben Affleck & he’s not been known for being a good actor. A group of people hold him “as the only Batman,” just as a groups of people hold Bale, Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney, or West “as the only Batman.” No different then with the Bond actors.
  I don’t remember this sudden shift from love to backlash for Bale & Affleck. I’m betting there’s still a good amount of people, myself included, that’d be all in if Bale (with Nolan) made a return to the character.

    There will always be reasonable people and unreasonable people. Bale barely got any negative in Dark Knight trilogy time. I remembered almost every ranking for the best Batman, Bale got the most votes even always double passed the second one. When he officially dropped this role,I remembered a bunch of people begged him to return. It's also the same period that Ben Affleck got unbelievable backlash. Everything just turned around after BVS released. Maybe people found Affleck's Batman got cooler voice and more brutal fighting scenes, but whatever the reason was, one fact is Bale's version suddenly got a lot of attack that never happened before. Bale's voice might be discussed before but his voice on only became the center of attacking after Ben Affleck officially took over. And all other comments like Bale's Batman is skinny, cannot fight, awful looking were all come after Ben Affleck officially become the next Batman

      I’m not sure how you’re quantifying “reasonable” & “unreasonable” people. I’m not sure Affleck’s performance in BvS wooed “everyone” to put him at the top of the list. Sure there’s some people that now like his version. I’m sure there’s a sect of fans who like him the best because he’s the current version. For whatever they’re worth, I haven’t seen too many fan polls put him at number 1.
      Aside from the voice (which was brought up following TDK), I haven’t really read too many post-BvS criticism of Bale.

        Sure. Is he quantifying it by the way people act or if they share his opinion?
        Like we’ve rattled through before, it’s easier for me to understand another person’s position once I understand the perimeters with which he/she has defined them. I know you like like to presume things are “obvious.” I like to base my assessments with as much data as I can get.

        It would be obvious to anyone that didn't have a disorder, and should be even more obvious to an investigator. How do you carry on conversations let alone dig for information when you need someone to quantify every colloquial term they use?
        A good investigator would have some intuition, and be able to infer the definitions from the context in which they are used. Just like how the average person can with no real effort.
        You have a social disorder.

        I don’t project assumptions onto people. I put that up there with not needing to belittle others to pump my own tires. I find it more helpful to get more information from people by letting them fill in the blanks then doing it for them. It’s always produced better written & recorded statements for me. Plus, it makes them bulletproof when opposing attorneys target my integrity if they cannot target the person providing the statement.

        It's not projecting assumptions to infer an obvious meaning from context. It's a basic human behavior.
        I very much doubt you're an investigator anything more than of the Cheaters type. You don't have the basic skills necessary to do the job at a higher level.

        Aside from being entertained by your unsolicited posts evaluating posters instead of contributing to the topic, I get a hoot imaging you’re Wile E. Coyote typing away. They read in the same tone & cadence from the 1 or 2 episodes where he spoke and reminded viewers he’s “Wile E. Coyote; Super Genius.”
        Regardless, again, I can’t speak of what’s acceptable with your employer. Only of my own. My employer doesn’t want inferences; obvious ones. They want no weak spots for doubt or holes to be created by the opposition.
        Solid callback to my Cheaters reference. Again, I do virtually zero surveillance. The closest I get is using a body cam for undercover work.
        I’m actually having doubts you’re a PI too. It read too much like someone saying “I know karate” when cornered by a couple of street toughs.
        Are we going to continue with this dance? I feel like I can only pull you from the corner & loft you do many times before it’s become stale. Hasn’t it become obvious we just aren’t compatible?!

        Your questions for needless clarification for obvious meanings don't contribute to the conversation any more than my calling you out for wasting everyones time does. Don't get ahead of yourself. Glad you give me a voice when you read my comments. That's entirely normal. Yup.
        You keep bringing your employer into these discussions. That's actually really sad. You're not on a case when you're on this discussion forum, and you work getting proof of cheating husbands is all but irrelevant.
        Your employer absolutely does want inferences, especially obvious ones. That you don't understand this makes me think you haven't had a promotion in a long while. With your inability to acknowledge anything bad negative about Batman, with your Shadow avatar, you seem like a boy who grew up to be a detective and defined his life by it, even though it's nothing like the adventures he grew up reading. Not the first sad case I've seen of this kind of behavior. From previous comments you seem to go out of your way to let people know your an investigator as well, which seems in line.
        Thing is, being an investigator isn't this super challenging skilled work you seem to think it is. There's a reason the average salary for investigators is something like 60k. It's schmuck work. It's just asking questions and getting answers. Which is why your employer, if they are any kind of decent investigative company, absolutely would want you to understand inferences. When people make inferences, especially obvious ones, they are communicating to you. When you miss that communication because of your disability, you let information get away, and when you have to ask them directly what they mean because you are incapable of understanding, you may end up getting entirely different information.
        You very clearly would seem to lack the skills to be a good investigator if you can't take peoples obvious meanings, which is a HUGE part of the job. Indeed, it's something women tend to be better at which is why they have been starting to dominate the PI field in recent years.
        I very much doubt you do undercover work lol. I very much you've had a promotion in a significant stretch of time. I assume you just like to play pretend and your employer lets you get away with it.
        You can have doubts about me being a PI all you like, but I have my license, and I actually do investigative work, not just background checks and catching cheating spouses.
        We can "keep doing this", as much as you like. I'm going to keep calling you out on your aspergers episodes, and you can reply claiming to be a PI all you like. I find it entertaining, so sure, please do continue, you big skilled real true private investigator you.

      It’s not really Bale’s fault. Costume department made ugly costume and the fight choreography was cringeworthy terrible. Yes he had a growling lisp, but it was Nolan and his brother making him talk too damn much in the script. It wouldn’t have been a problem if he spoke softer and less often like Keaton. Keaton was a better Batman, but Bale was a better Bruce. Ben was the first one who excelled in both roles, but a good chunk of that thanks goes to a much better costume, voice and fight choreographer.

        The point is, no matter what problems Bale has, his performance in dark knight trilogy is definitely not close to bad. However,some people just keep hating and hating and you cannot reason with them. And no matter how much praise Ben Affleck got, he would eventually experience the Internet abusing. Some people are just love to hate. Bale never got so much hate before but he suddenly had when Affleck took over. Some people even made vedios to prove how Bale is the worst. This type of behavior will make actors suffer including Affleck. He will be just like Bale whenever he dropped the cape.

        Yeah I think some people are “all or nothing” types who either have to blindly praise or absurdly bash in their commentary. The fact is the Nolan trilogy deserves both praise and criticism. And as for Bale, he’s established himself as an A list actor and he was a great Bruce. Not a great Batman, but it’s not his fault imo. That falls more on Nolan and his crew. Nolan made his version of Batman, and that’s his right as Director, whether a die hard fan of Batman like myself agrees or not.

I actually really liked the idea of Jake Gyllenhaal playing a younger Bruce/Bats. Not sure if Reeves can cast him now that he’s contracted by Marvel, but the more I think about it he’s my top choice.

I still think Karl Urban would be a great Batman. I think Dredd was what really sold me on the idea. It's disappointing that we'll never get to see a solo Batfleck film though. Anyway, even though I reeeally want to see what Reeves has in store, I also don't blame them for wanting to take their time. I'd much rather them make a quality film instead of trying to rush out an unfinished product. We've all seen how that turns out.
