Aquaman Leaps Over Man of Steel at the Domestic Box Office

Aquaman has been atop the DCEU worldwide box office rankings for several days now. James Wan's billion-dollar smash will eventually become the highest-grossing film ever based on a DC property. Aquaman's climb up DC's domestic box office charts has not been nearly as quick, but it moved up one spot on Tuesday.

Aquaman earned another $2.3M in North America yesterday, raising its domestic total to $291.6M. That puts the film ahead of Man of Steel ($291M) for fourth place in the DCEU domestically.

That may be as high as Aquaman goes in the domestic rankings, but we can't rule it out from passing Suicide Squad ($325.1M) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330.4M) yet. Wonder Woman ($412.6M) is safe in its top spot.

      WW and AM were far more popular than Black Panther. The JL was also far more iconic than The Avengers. Clearly BP outgrossing JL was a lot more embarrassing, lol.
      Thor 3 also outgrossed JL and BvS. Dr. Strange outgrossed Superman. A tree and a raccoon did too :)
      Hulk = 18 successful films afterwards = consistency.

Superman Returns happened. 270M budget and 391M global box office, easily one of if not the biggest box office flops of all time and Zack Snyder had nothing to do with that. The world was not impressed with his return.

  I don't think Superman Returns had much to do with it, if anything. MoS opened pretty big. Even broke Toy Story 3's record for biggest opening in june, which proves people were still interested in Superman. The problem was that the movie was divisive and had a big second weekend drop and poor legs.
  Then BvS happened, which again had a massive opening and then dropped like a dead fly. And that movie made Superman's character even worse.
  So yeah, Zack is definitely responsible that Superman isn't that big nowadays.

      Sure Superman Returns was considered a disappointment, but my point is that it didn't permanently hurt Superman, as MoS opened pretty big. People knew it was a different take on the character. Like you said, SR is irrelevant today. If people don't go to the movies to watch Superman, it's not because of SR, but because of current movies.
      It's not the same case as BvS, which definitely hurt JL's opening. So If Superman isn't such a big hit TODAY, it's because of Snyder movies, not SR.

      He has. Donner films were big hits. Both broke box office records. I know they were a long time ago but they were still hits. Problem is that we haven't had a good Superman movie in almost 40 years. But people do have interest in the character as proven by the big openings.
      MoS actually showed how much of a potential Superman has. It made $668M, which is a lot of money for a reboot movie with mixed reception. It could have made even more if it didn't drop big in it's second weekend and didn't had poor legs.
      As for SR, it isn't even on the map today. The only movies that can affect Superman's success at the box office nowadays are DCEU movies, and no DCEU movie with Superman in it has been well received.

      Superman 3 and 4 were disasters, they were so bad that Superman went to TV series multiple times before anybody trying again in Hollywood and when they did it, it was another bomb. MOS was the first time people actually showed some interest again until the studio and DC failed the character. People are just more interested in more characters that haven't been tapped nowadays. Aquaman had more interest than Superman and imo MOS was a better movie but the character is stale and AM is "fresh". I won't be surprised at all if Shazam makes more money than MOS or JL. I just think people have moved on from the character and are more interested in characters that are brand new to the big screen.

If a well received Superman movie failed, then I would agree, but so far all the movies that have failed were mixed to bad, and even with mixed reception he still made good money.
      And yeah, fun movies like Aquaman are making a lot nowadays. I think that if Superman had a movie that not only was good, but also fun it would be a massive hit. I don't think people get tired of seeing the same characters as long as they're well written. If they're grim, joyless and the movies are bad, then yeah, they will lose interest.

Plus it's an established franchise based on a popular toy line. Fun blockbusters like that can make a lot of money. Venom and SS got away with it too because they were fun. However the standard CBM that doesn't rely on the fun factor does need to be considered good. A Superman movie that is neither good or fun will definitely suffer at the BO. Look at BvS. If that doesn't tell you how bad word of mouth can hurt a movie I don't know what can.

Michael Bay had real hits with The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor... before making billion dollar movies with Transformers which he did multiple times.       Zack Snyder movies are a good exmple of how important reception is. BvS opened bigger than any Transformers movie and then dropped 70% due to poor word of mouth. MoS also had a big drop. Transformers Dark of The Moon only dropped 51%, which means it had good word of mouth. All in all, reception is an important factor for a movie's success.

      He needs to be build up like any character. Batman had to be build up in TDK trilogy despite being extremely popular. Being in a successful franchise is a big advantage. After The Avengers Marvel solo's started making a lot more money.

      There are plenty of movies that have poor reception that make a lot of money, especially in the comic genre it happens all the time and 99% of those films don’t have the Superman brand and I’m not using “reception” as a caveat either, you’re doing that.
      SR had the largest budget ever at the time for a superhero film with 270M and nothing in its way to succeed. BB on the other hand had a much lower budget and had to overcome the disaster of Batman & Robin and Forever and when people saw it they realized the game had changed.
      The Superman “records” are few and far in between compared to other superhero films regardless of reception and very inconsequential to the records that really matter to studios and fans.

If you think an octopus playing the drums is fun, an operatic vilain is fun or armpit smelling and pee jokes are fun that's fine but Spider-man into the spiderverse was fun and a better film and not making over a billion, Bumblebee was fun with great reception and it's not making over a billion, it takes much more than fun to do that.

      I've been saying reception is an important factor for a movie's success. CATWS had good reception and was a success. Aquaman wasn't considered as good, but it was far more fun and visually more impressive. Plus the genre is bigger than ever right now.

      I would never categorize TDK as “fun” and I would never correlate “fun” with box office success because that is way too subjective.
      Spider-Man is always hovering closer to the Billion mark consistently and has routinely smoked Superman at the box office and it’s not even close. You cling on to a couple of box office records that didn’t last a minute as justification to calling Superman a hit at the BO when the numbers say clearly that compared to other superheroes he’s not in the same class and that’s all I’m saying.       I completely spaced it on IM that was a great hit and on my top 5 list of Marvel films but CA, Thor and Hulk were all mediocre at best.
      The only reason Nolan's first Batman movie did not do well was because of the disappointment in the kid movies of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. I didn't even watch Batman Begins (which I consider the best Batman movie) until week 3 because of the sour taste from the last films. But once I realized like the GA that we were finally getting a real Batman film it all took care of itself.

      Those 60 days had movies like Transformers: Age of Extinction and Inside Out, both which grossed over 1B. If we count 2013 movies that came after MoS you can add Monsters University and World War Z. And from past years it beat Toy Story 3 (1B), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Harry Potter Prisoner of Azkaban.
      Other movies released later that didn't pass MoS june opening: Despicable Me 3, which also grossed over 1B. Not even WW passed MoS's june opening. And today it's still in the top 5 ever. Come on, that's an achivement. People showing up to see Superman over all of those blockbusters proves he's a big BO draw.

      You can throw in poor reception all you want but you still fail. Transformers DSoTM over 1B with 55% audience score. Age of Extinction over 1B with 51% audience score, both MOS and SR had better audience scores and didn't come close!
      Snyders 300 broke rated R and IMAX records when it came out, was a box office hit and had a 89% audience score so yeah Zack brought some juice when people found out he was doing Superman after 300. The majority of people were excited for a new take.
      Once again you keep throwing out the word fun as if that is supposed to have one specific definition when it doesn't since it is a subjective term. One thing I know for certain is that "fun" is not a category I look for when I go to watch a film. I'm looking for story, director, actor, cinematography, music... Fun is nowhere in the equation and is a bi-product of the experience, now if I want to watch something funny I watch a comedy.
      BvS tanked after opening week because it was a badly developed film with issues in pacing, storyline, character development, editing... it was a poorly constructed film with some great visual moments.

      Good marketing is a factor, but it's mostly reflected on the OW. To make past $1B you need legs, which means good word of mouth and repeated viewings.
      Transformers Dark of the Moon had a very acceptable 52% second weekend drop. Marketing alone doesn't do that. BvS marketing was estimated to cost $165 million. Still didn't make 1B and dropped 70%.
      Bumble Bee was a lot smaller in budget than the other films. It was more focused on story than big noisy CGI battles, which is why most people go to see these movies in the first place. So it makes a lot of sense that it made less money despite being considered a higher quality film than the others.

      They key for WOM is BO performance. The more people recommend a movie the less it'll drop in it's following weekends. "A lot of money" is relative. Fury Road had a much smaller drop than BvS due to better WOM, but it made less money, most likely due to lower interest. So some movies with good WOM may not make a lot of money by CBM standards but they still perform well at the BO.
      Bad word of mouth on the other hand will make any movie drop hard at the BO. Trailers, TV spots and billboards can't beat toxic WOM on social media and internet. In the case of Transformers DotM, it only dropped 52%. Numbers speak for themselves. Ratings/reviews on RT aren't better indicators for WOM than BO performance. Much less in markets like China.

    Long ago, MoS had a reported budget of 175M. They changed that to 225M.
    For Avengers, it was 220M, but I've seen sources setting it at 260M, if not more.
    In any case, MoS was indeed an insanely expensive film and DID need to make 750-850 to really be considered a good success in the eyes of WB.

I was rewatching Man of Steel the other day and I really do love that movie every time i watch it. I know Snyder says that his plan was made from day 1 but to me MoS doesn't feel like a movie that was meant to launch an expanded Universe. Either way Aquaman was great fun and deserves the success. I look forward to buying it on 4k bluray.

Its a shame we never got a MoS 2 yet. Mos was flawed but it seemed to be building up to something. I was excited by the end of the movie at the thought of were MoS 2 seemed to be headed.

    I totally agree. Each and every character in DC has the potential to be as successful as Aquaman. Once they get the right story and director with the proper vision for the character, every DC movie, could be unique, epic and massively successful.
    I really hope Reeves hits a massive home run with his Batman movie.
    I also hope we hear movement on a new Superman movie soon, as well as an update on GL Corps and Flash movie.

"Great fun" doesn't constitute a great motion picture. It's was simple, full of exposition, bad editing, the movie failed to make you care about the characters. Mamoa might have been great under Snyder but was reduced to playing himself with the addition of some goofy humor.

Finally had time to get to go see this movie. We decided to go on a Tuesday night, 1/15(school night) thinking there would not be a crowd. We got there 50 minutes before the show. When we went to buy tickets, there was only a few select seats left!!! Thinking when the movie starts we could move from the front row to the back, yea, thought there would be some no-shows. There were NO empty seats in the house!!!! Who would have thought on January 15th this movie would still sell out on a week night!!!!! I think there is still some juice left in AQUAMAN!! Don’t be surprised if it makes a lot more money than expected in the next few weeks.

Well deserved. Either way, 290M isn't some sort of benchmark. It's no big deal. Wonder Woman's 412M should be the benchmark for solo outings, let alone team-ups (BVS, JL) which earned way less than WW.

Anyways, I'm positive about the future with Hamada in charge, especially seeing we are now being associated to talented directors like Patty, Wan, Reeves, Ava, Spielberg instead of a one man reign of terror.
