Aquaman Closing in on $1 Billion with $940.7M at the Global Box Office

on Aquaman Closing in on $1 Billion with $940.7M at the Global Box Office

Aquaman is closing in on $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Aquaman's third domestic weekend ($30.7M) lifted its global tally to $940.7M. Director James Wan is just days away from officially claiming another billion-dollar hit (Furious 7).

This will be the first time a DC-based movie has topped $1B since The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085B) in 2012. Overall, Aquaman will be the third DC film to have eclipsed that milestone. The Dark Knight ($1.005B) was the first in 2008.

The question now is whether or not Aquaman can catch up to and pass Rises to become the highest-grossing DC superhero movie ever released. It still has the box office mostly to itself, as there are no major new releases until Glass on January 18.

Not adjusting for inflation, Batman could be looking up to Aquaman in a matter of weeks. I'm not sure how many would have predicted that a month ago, but suffice to say, the genre is evolving.

God damn that is one hideous Bat cowl. Ugh, I will never hate any live action batsuit more than TDK/DKR batsuit.

He looks retarded in that thing.

Hate how round his bat helmet is.

That is NOT how the bat cowl is supposed to look.

So glad the Nolan days are history.

The Batman Begins one was fantastic. I can’t believe nobody tapped Nolan on the shoulder and pointed out that he had completely downgraded the Batsuit the second time around

The suits are night and day for me.

Kinda tired of everyone having a hard on for the Begins suit. Looked way too bulky and Batman able to actually turn his head is so much better.

Him being able to turn his head is nice... but not at the expense of ruining that classic intimidating look he is supposed to have.

The Batman Begins suit is in no way “too bulky”.. if anything it’s the BvS suit that falls under the “top bulky” category.

The Bulk on the Begins suit was literally perfect. And the cowl had a much bigger mouth area which looked far less awkward than it did in th sequels

But as far as batman is concerned, he’s supposed to be bulky!! Not scrawny!!

Begins had the perfect amount of bulk not too much (BvS) and not too little (TDK)

It’s hideous. Batman’s head is not supposed to be an oval shape and he’s not supposed to have a tiny mouth area with a skinny ass neck.

You can like it if you want, but it’s not how the bat cowl is supposed to look.

I think that’s what it is that bothers me the most. He looks like more of a bird than a bat.

Not arguing with you there. BvS was a flawed film.

That said, the story in TDK movies weren’t even engaging or exciting.

They were long drawn, overly serious and boring imo.

So I would say Nolan didn’t nail anything.

He did great with Batman Begins the rest of his trilogy is overrated garbage.

      6. AnonymousHero Avatar

Best cowl and suit is definitely BvS but even the cowl in BvS can be improved upon.

        1. BatfleckRules Avatar
          BatfleckRules

The BvS suit is pretty good. It was a hell of a lot better than TDK suit but I still think they haven’t “nailed” a batman costume yet.

So far the Batman Begins costume has been my favourite.

The BvS costume was cool if you’re a big fan of the way Batman looked in TDKReturns graphic novel.

He’s extremely thick, very thick neck to the point that it’s cartoonish, extremely short ears.

Problem for me, is that when you make batman that stocky I find he loses a bit of his theatrical nature.

I like slightly longer ears, a Batman that is in great shape but a little more lean. And I’m so so about using grey for the body suit. I think grey works better in the comics but live action I think all black looks more “real world” to me.

But don’t get me wrong... The BvS suit was still pretty cool... it’s just not my ideal batsuit.

In the comics I really like the way Jim Lee would draw the new 52 Batman. That’s pretty much perfection in my eyes.

          1. AnonymousHero Avatar
            AnonymousHeroreplying to BatfleckRules

I hear ya. For me, the black and gray is iconic. And the bulk that Affleck had reminded me of Jim Lee's drawings, so I'm very much down for that one. It's as close to perfection the suit as ever been from a comic book standpoint.

That being said, I do believe it can still be improved upon. Mainly the cowl being a bit more form fitting with slightly longer ears, but even the suit can be a bit more streamlined as well and less visually bulky. With everything Reeves plans on doing for his turn with Batman, gut feeling says he's going to nail it.

Who he chooses as Batman however is another story...

          2. BatfleckRules Avatar
            BatfleckRulesreplying to AnonymousHero

Yeah I have this feeling that Reeves will get the suit perfect this time. They can’t afford to do anything less than stellar this time. They kinda have to earn their spot in making Batman a box office juggernaut again after BvS.

And I agree with ya about the cowl. Was very surprised at how “halloweenish” it looked. Just a plain old rubber looking cowl again.

It just didn’t look very sleek, or form fitting as you say. Jim Lee’s Batman cowls always look sleek that’s what I want translated to film.

I like the black and grey... but as I’ve said I think it just works better in the comics rather than a live action film similar to how wolverines yellow wouldn’t work as well in live action.

Altering comic book costumes from the comics is sometimes necessary and for batman I just find the all black look is much visually striking.

            You almost could
mistake him for some sort of strange creature in the night with the all black look.

With the black and grey it breaks up the seamless ness of the costume and makes it obvious that he’s just a guy in a suit.

See, this is why BvS was a failure. Because the first movie with the two largest and most well known comic book icons could and should have easily made this, and much more.

Not trying to always bring up BvS but that's the only point I have to make in regard to this. I'm glad AM is doing well, although sad this means a reboot is absolutely off the table.

Pretty sure that him and Wan did discuss how the story would play out. Yeah he doesn't have a story credit, but it seems him and Wan did talk with each other before he dropped out of JL. From Wan's talks, Snyder wanted to give him as much freedom as possible. And then there's how the Atlaneans swim underwater.

          2. josh0909 Avatar

Actually Snyder developed the movie with his protege Kurt Johnstad and Wan and Johns started developing the story they scrapped Johnstad's script and brought in David Leslie Johnson and eventually Will Beall to finish off the screenplay. Like I said Johns had more input on the story than Snyder. Hell a lot of the movie is based off of his Aquman run.

I never said that he developed the story. I said tgat him and Wan talked about how the movie will go, basically how will JL affect AM. And Wan made it seem that Snyder wanted to make sure that Wan had a lot of freedom to whatever Wan wanted to do in AM.

It’s so weird that I never said that the films were good because of his input.

Provide a source showing Wan and Snyder talked about the film. All I've seen in Wan showed Snyder his near finished product, long past the point where he would have asked for input.

Dude, if you had changed your name simply because of that, you would’ve embarrassed yourself. You really don’t see how juvenile it is to change your username just mock someone. That is something that no self-respecting would do. You were already pushing it with changing just to express your opinion about BvS. Now you’ve reached laughable levels. And I didn’t say that retardation was the naughty word.

“In “Justice League,” we thought Arthur Curry/Aquaman traveled to Atlantis when he meets Mera. But in “Aquaman,” he apparently goes to Atlantis for the first time. So what’s happening there? Where was he in “Justice League”?

It wasn’t Atlantis. I spoke with Zack [Snyder, director of “Justice League,”] early on, and Zack mentioned that the location that Aquaman swims to in “Justice League” is an outpost. So when he told me that was his idea, I was like, “Oh great, then I can actually have Arthur go to Atlantis for the first time.” That’s very important for me, because he can go into it and have a wide-eyed approach to Atlantis and be in awe of it. I think that’s very important from a storytelling standpoint because the audience gets to experience Atlantis for the first time along with the character.”

If you honestly think that was all he and Snyder had talked about, then I have a planet for sale for only $3.

This is the one thing that seperates Snyder from Bay. Both are incredibly visual oriented directors with lots of style over substance. But as much as both Snyder and Bay are hated for their styles, people do pay a LOT to see Bays films while they don't for Snyder.

Well Snyder tries to bake in a lot of symbolism and deeper meaning into his films and the problem is he's not that talented to do it without it being on the nose and obvious. Prime example is the Martha scene where he's obviously trying to portray Bruce as this broken man experiencing a PTSD attack, but the scene is so badly directed, acted, and edited it skills any real drama for the scene When Snyder was at his best he was just directing ridiculously good looking movies with A+ action in them. Dawn of the dead, 300, Watchmen, MOS( although this is where his symbolism after sucker punch started to get real bad) are all top flight films.

300 was a hit, but no one had an opinion of how it was supposed to be. Everybody "knows" how comic characters should look and be like, everyone's been reading comic book for 50 years. No one knew how the spartans were supposed to be or do, so they loved it as a new thing. More obscure projects work with Snyder, I think.

It really could’ve been done a lot better but really it shouldn’t have happened so soon. It was rushed.

We should’ve gotten a proper Superman sequel and a solo Batman reboot first.

Could’ve made a movie that was just Lex Luthor vs Superman and it would’ve been far more interesting. The set up from Man of Steel was there and everything.

how would the world react to Superman ? Lex Luthor would be the extreme opposition to his existence. We kind of explored that with Lex in BvS but it could’ve been so much better with an entire film to explore their dynamic... and with a better actor playing Lex Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg....

      what a waste that was.

      1. NinjaGamer13 Avatar
        NinjaGamer13

Regardless of peoples opinions of MoS, I don't think it was a great foundation for a shared universe. No real worldbuilding and they killed one of Superman's main villains who should have been recurring.

That aside, I don't think the issue is really with them doing a Batman vs Superman film as the second film. Look at the way the Superman cartoons World's Finest was handled. They should have had a brief fight, realized they were manipulated and teamed up against the bigger threat. Not 2 hours of trite emo bullshit and then the fight stops because of the horrendously written Martha bullshit.

        1. BatfleckRules Avatar
          BatfleckRules

It didn’t need any real world building in order to be a launchpad.

Iron Man didn’t do any world building and it still works as a start to a shared universe.

Zod did not need to be a reoccurring villain it worked perfectly fine that they killed him off.

The Superman villain that was wasted was Lex Luthor. They gave us a crappy version of Lex, and then left him totally crazy and cartoonishly evil by the end of the film completely killing any chance of us ever getting the bald headed, charming, jealous version of Lex

Man of Steel was a perfect universe opener. After that film, the sky was the limit.

Could’ve made an extremely thought provoking Superman sequel.

            lol.

Iron Man did a ton of world building compared to MoS.

If you want a shared universe to potentially span 30 - 60 movies, it makes sense not to kill off iconic villians.

            Agree Lex was wasted.

MoS was far from a perfect universe opener. It was below average.

The world building was so rushed in the sequels. Hey, now we have metahumans, magic, a government agency to deal with it all, etc etc, out of nowhere.

          2. BatfleckRules Avatar
            BatfleckRulesreplying to NinjaGamer13

What world building did Iron Man do? It didn’t do fuck all it was just a solo Iron Man film. No mention of other heroes, Avengers or anything.

For me, BvS is where WB went completely wrong. I never would’ve expected them to go in that direction for Supermans sequel. They shorehorned Batman in forcing him awkwardly into the narrative for the sake of making a quick buck.

I had something totally different in mind. I wanted a film where Lex Luthor turns the public against Superman by manipulating everyone.

    Well deserved.

I can definitely see why audiences would be enjoying this film more than Justice League or BvS. It was definitely more upbeat.

That said, Im still not as excited for the DCEU as I should be as I just feel everything is a giant mess right now.

The position the DCEU is in right now is so awkward with having two films with two new characters everyone liked and having a couple films featuring Batman and Superman that weren’t so great ( I exclude Man of Steel because to me it’s a good film)

So we have a half successful universe and I don’t think WB made a smart choice. I feel like rather than giving Affleck and Cavill another shot with a better director looking after them they decided to recast altogether.

And so we’re going to be left with this awkward Universe. Or is the DCEU done ? Is Aquaman’s success a big surprise to WB? Did they expect it to be successful?

We’re they planning on scrapping the universe after Aquaman and WW2 and start over ?

They definitely have a new joker. Wouldn’t be surprised if we get a new Batman next.

    Like wtf WB.

What a mess Zack Snyder created. They should’ve never let him direct WB or JL in the first place and let someone better handle those films.

Or better yet, they shouldn’t have even made BvS or JL until after every character had a solo film and Superman had a sequel.

Just such a mess. Does anyone know how WB could possibly recast both Superman, Joker, Lex Luthor and Batman and have them still fit in with Aquaman and Wonder Woman? How will they pull this off ?

As a fan, i’m very confused, and frustrated, and I feel like WB isn’t doing any explaining whatsoever and it feels like they constantly lie to their fans.

      I have to agree.

Much as I love MOS/BvS, the DCEU is in shambles. At least if Aquaman and Wonder Woman both bombed, WB would be able to easily wipe the slate clean and start over, but instead, they have two wildly successful movies set in a universe lots of people didn't care for.

They obviously have to retcon, but that always comes off as a serious irritation and confuses the hell out of people - especially newcomers to the universe.

Flashpoint would have been a good way out, but that will probably not get made within this century, so that's out of the question.

      1. BatfleckRules Avatar
        BatfleckRules

Have films ever been retconned before from a franchise before ? Not sure if I can think of a clear example.

Like would the studio ever go as far as to pretend BvS, Suicide Squad and JL never happened ?

        Keep Man of Steel.
        Keep Henry Cavill, Amy Adams.
        Recast Lex Luthor, Batman

Cause Id be ok with that... but there’s just so much to retcon now. So much that would need to be undone.

        It’s just such a mess.

The smartest option in my eyes, would be to continue on with Affleck and Cavill. Make sure their films are spectacular.

        1. DudeofSteel1Million Avatar
          DudeofSteel1Million

Sure. Just look at the X-Men universe. There's continuity issues aplenty. Even with the inclusion of a Days of Future Past time travel storyline, there's lots of holes and errors in the timeline.

      2. Schuyler Finley Avatar
        Schuyler Finley

Just how are WB gonna do Flashpoint? It’s not gonna be even remotely similar to its comic counterpart, unless they just want to give the “DC is too dark” critics the middle finger.

        1. DudeofSteel1Million Avatar
          DudeofSteel1Million

The answer is that they're NOT.

It was confirmed a while back that the Flash movie wasn't going to be Flashpoint. And as you yourself said, the storyline is too "dark" for them to even think about trying it in the near future.

So they're probably just going to look forward and pretend the audience won't care when they suddenly see new faces in the suits of Batman or Superman.... That is if we even live long enough to SEE a new Batman and Superman film at all.

I'm 100 times more excited for DCEU now than before when Snyder was involved in it to bury the entire DC property for good. I'm glad WB saved it by firing him midway though JL- which actually saved his face as it was doomed to bomb either way judging by its low opening because people were tired of him. Same thing happened with Bay's Last Knight.

      1. BatfleckRules Avatar
        BatfleckRules

        I know...

But don’t you see how awkward a recasting of the entire Superman and Batman universe will be?

We had 3 films with the Superman universe, and 2
films featuring characters from the Batman universe.

How can they just recast the Batman cast and the Superman cast and it not feel incredibly awkward?

That’s what I’m getting at. WB still has a huge mess on their hands because the universe isn’t a big enough failure to justify a complete reboot... but their version of Superman and Batman in this universe are somewhat tainted making them feel like they need to reboot only certain characters in th universe.

And it just so happens that the characters they need to reboot are two of their biggest heroes.

How is that not going to feel weird after we’ve had a couple films ?

Both of these characters have met Aquaman, both of these characters have met Wonder Woman.

You can’t just reboot them now... it’s too late.

Or you can... but not without it feeling extremely contrived... which for people like me that appreciate strong continuity and consistency... really sucks

If only WB hired these amazing, different directors for every property since the beginning instead of same clueless stubborn guy for 3 straight films.

I just want Matt Reeves to somehow establish that his Batman is not a killer. Killing and blowing up goons don't make him look cool, it just makes him one of them, and it's everything against what he stands for.

...and don't forget, show him as the world's greatest detective. Big bat brain!!

Yup. It was awfully painful to see him being manipulated like a puppet by a nerdy Lex Luthor wannabe, let alone not show any sign of being a detective.

"But, but... he had a cool suit and intense voice, so he's comic book accurate, definitive Batman"- fanboys.

Snyder willingly destroyed his character just to make him look 'darker' from Nolan's Batman. In fact, I think he doesn't give a damn about any other character besides Superman, he single handedly buried rest of Justice League to make Supes look strong. He used them as bunch of 'jobbers'.

He'll do it right. He handled the Caesar character from his Apes trilogy masterfully in that regard

I hope so, that's why I have hope. But, it will be a daunting task for him to course correct, and somehow convince us that his Batman hasn't killed before without messing up the timeline- which isn't that much important considering Patty and Wan already didn't care about Snyder's timeline, or vision.

This is the second time I'm wrong. First with Titans series, and then Aquaman hit Billion. I think I need more trust on DC movie now.

You should.Unlike the past, They have good directors moving forward like Matt Reeves/James Wan/Patty Jenkins/John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein duo/James Gunn will be wrting screenplay of new Suicide Squad 2 and he might end up directing Green lantern. Also, Dc in-charge Walter Hamada knows what he is doing. He oversaw extremely profitable conjuring franchise.

I hope Snyder bots bury themselves in shame. Those despicable human beings (sort of) crapped on movie and trailers, and now giving the credit of its success to Snyder after it's certain to hit a billion. There's a huge movement in Twitter to pull down Shazam! as well just because it's not depressive and colorless.

I have a crazy feeling Shazam will do big money too. I think world wide audiences are just looking for something different in CBM. That's why Venom, and AM made so much. If Shazam can make something unique, it'll make money.

I dislike Venom but I can say it's different.

Remember: it will have only about 3 weeks to do all the damage it can at the BO. I think Avengers 4 will erase him from the map unfortunatelly. But I do expect a final cume of around $750 too. Its is hard righ now to pick an adecuate release date, as Disney has a mayor release almost every month now

Only 3 weeks? By the end of the third week movies make 85-90% of their box office take. It'll be fine.

$1B is a done deal right now, and so is passing TDK at the global BO. I think DKR will not last long after that as WB highest grossing CBM of all time. Right now, I think the only rival yet to defeat (as it is obvios it won't beat BP) is RDJ and Iron Man 3. Some sources are talking about a final domestic cume between $325-$340M. That's around $60M less than what IM made. The key will be the international box office, and it is not slowing down more than it should, so it will probably end up with a higher international cume that IM3; also let's not forget there are still two countries where the film has not opened yet: Italy and Japan. If tendencies across Europe remain the same, we can expect a boost of around $15-20M from Italy, and I'm willing to bet on $20-25M from the land of the rising sun. That's another $40M to add to the international BO. Time will tell...
