Aquaman Is the Highest-Grossing DCEU Movie, Passing Batman v Superman Worldwide

on Aquaman Is the Highest-Grossing DCEU Movie, Passing Batman v Superman Worldwide

Aquaman is the king of the modern DC Films era. After adding another $9.3M to its domestic box office on Friday, Aquaman has lifted its global total to $887.6M. That puts it ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873.6) as the DCEU's new world champion.

The updated total for Aquaman does not include international receipts from yesterday. The film is expected to top $900M worldwide today. It could finish the weekend as high as $925M-$930M.

This is the best performance any DC movie has enjoyed since The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085B) in 2012. More likely than not, Aquaman will break the billion-dollar barrier. It should at least pass The Dark Knight ($1.005B) and still has a shot at topping Rises as the highest-grossing DC movie ever released.

The success of Aquaman might be a factor in Warner Bros. taking its time with The Batman. This is a new era in which Batman will not carry the weight of the DC brand solely on his caped shoulders. Aquaman and Wonder Woman are here and clearly capable of keeping global audiences engaged and entertained.

At this point, I won't be surprised if we see Aquaman 2 in theaters before we see The Batman.

Aquaman worked because its potential was revealed to worldwide before domestic. Do you remember how its American Tomato score passed from 76% to 63% when it was released in the U.S ? That's great now non-MCU movies will be released worldwide first lol

Aquaman worked cause it was a good movie.Stop making excuses. If it was bad like BvS then it would have also get screwed over second weekend on domestic box office after word of mouth spread.

Audience and word of mouth matters more than critics. And, Aquaman has a audience score of 80% on rt.It has shown great legs and is headed for over a $300 million domestic box office cause audience likes it.

That 70% drop BvS had after such a big opening was thanks to the audience not the critics.

Aquaman was simply well received by the audience.

It took the all-praised MCU 7 solo films, until Iron Man 3 broke the $1B barrier, and after that, another 9 solo films until BP did it again (I'm counting GotG as a "solo" film, just like Suicide Squad, and Civil War is NOT a solo film). They couldn't even break the $800M barrier until GoTG vol. 2! and that's the 3rd film of phase 3!
Two out of 4 solo films DCEU has produced have made it past $800M, and if Suicide Squad had been released in China, the number would be 3 out of 4. And some people (again, "some people") said the DCEU was a financial failure...

    1. Qthetar . Avatar
      Qthetar .

I think it’s just that DC characters are far more interesting and spectacular imo. A real cinematic experience. Also more popular among people if done right. DC characters have a good creative distance in them. They are not more of the same thus it offers a different experience. I can make an argument of how Flash is different than Green Lantern easily. While I can’t tell what’s so uniquely different between Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Black Panther and Black widow. Not so much of cool or different powers and traits. Even personalities they share more of the same imo.

I mean the main marvel movies they put out aren’t even my fav marvel characters. They all sound the same on paper. Good for them, the movies are very formulatic but works. Honestly I’m more of a Daredevil, Spiderman, Wolverine and Punisher kind of guy and they are unique, something marvel should capitalize on. But they are too edgy (minus SM) for the current state of the MCU.

    2. OGmacrazy Avatar
      OGmacrazy

Then you average out the budgets of the two universes and realize how much more of a profit their turned with those movies. It's also funny you fail to mention the obvious difference in cultural significance between the heroes DC has put in their movies vs the ones in MCU movies. Marvel Studios made those guys into worldwide icons. DC couldn't even make a Justice League movie outgross Ant-Man 2 LMAO!

      1. drisraelluna Avatar
        drisraelluna

and THEN you do the ACTUAL MATH, with REAL numbers, instead of writing the first thing that comes out of your ass, and find out that the first 6 MCU films costed only $289M less than DCEU first six ($1000 vs $1289), but as it turns out, the first DCEU films, even WITH the flop that was JL, managed to gross almost $1B more than Marvel, even with the $1.5B avengers (net difference = $650+M more for DCEU)
You know what IS funny? that after all that rant you only managed to prove 3 things:
        1. You're one of "those people"
        2. You're a lazy ass troll who just posts whatever comes to his mind without taking the time to actually look for the numbers before posting crap
        3. You were unable to disprove my premise: the DCEU is NOT a financial failure

        1. OGmacrazy Avatar
          OGmacrazy

All that without counting the marketing gross and not taking into account that out of the first 5 DC movies, 3 were team up movies featuring Superman Batman and Wonder Woman and Joker, 1 was a Superman movie and another a Wonder Woman, all this in an era where Super Hero movies are huge by fucking default, something that Nolan's Batman and the MCU ushered in. But I guess comparing these 3 against the likes of fucking Iron Man, Captain America and Thor is fair in your book lmao

          3. drisraelluna Avatar
            drisraellunareplying to OGmacrazy

So... you want to talk about imponderables now?(because yo don't have the actual numbers, I presume). Marketing costs apply to both franchises, and even if DCEU's marketing costs were higher, they were NOT $700+M higher than Marvel's. You know what else is an imponderable variable? Profit for selling film-related merchandise. You were so eager to talk about "the cultural significance" of DC's characters... well, guess what? It is also because that cultural significance that DCEU is more profitable than the MCU. I bet the trinity sold way more 3D and 4K blurays than Iron Man, Hulk and Thor sold regular ones; the same with toys and everything else related to the films. Next time you see someone wearing an Iron Man or Thor cap, please, take the time to take his picture and post it, but be warned: for everyone of those you find (if you actually manage to find one), you'll see a hundred guys wearing Superman or Batman caps, and also those with the BvS logo. So what now? you started with production costs... refuted; then marketing costs and cultural significance... again, refuted. What else? Gay remarks (again)?
Oh, and btw, you are the one who seems desperate to disprove my point (a failed task), desperate to prove his falacy is true and desperate to have the last word. But hey, what can we expect from a guy who argues for the sake of it, says "he won't stop because it's funny", has Cavill with a mustache as his avatar, and also (and this is the best one) actually wakes up at 6:00 am (well, 6:24 am to be precise. YOUR local time, not mine) to reply at comments in a website. Seriously??? Get a life! LOL. You've got to be one of the biggest trolls in here. Just goes to show how important and big these characters are compared to Marvel's, plain and simple. DC characters are more loved and just seem to have a bigger impact overall. 6. Reverse_Flash Avatar
      Reverse_Flash

Silly comparison though, as Marvel had to work their ass off and build all their characters. With DC the interest was already pretty high, that's why most DCEU movies opened so big.

The DCEU could have cracked a billion in only their second movie. Instead it took them 6 movies to do so thanks to the poor reception they had. The DCEU has been such a waste of potential, it's ridiculous.

Also the fact that Marvel has already cracked the 2B mark speaks amazing of them.

I knew Aquaman was going to be the king of the seas but had no idea he was going to be the king of the box office as well and with nothing in its way until Glass, it’s gonna break a billion. Just wow... so happy for Momoa!

I've been following Scott Mendelson's (Forbes) work since the film made its debut. After a looooong series of daily articles, filled with skepticism and a pinch of disguised negativism (an "it could do like this film, but it wont" sort of thing), finally, yesterday he just had to bend the knee and bow to the king of Atlantis: "it’s now a matter of when, not if, Aquaman swims past $300m domestic and $1b worldwide."
It would take a cataclysmic-end-of-the-world-like event to prevent this film from reaching the $1B mark. I think it will end as DC's highest grossing film ever, surpassing Nolan's Batman. And meanwhile, it is STILL showing legs that are on par with Jumanji. Let's see how much it makes this weekend

    1. Fréaláf Hildeson Avatar

Great post, although Jumanji had better legs - it was a phenomenon with very few equals amongst blockbusters (but also opened much lower than Aquaman).

the difference between them has remained consistent day after day, sin ce their release date, at the same time points. It was around $19M on thursday, then increased to around $20M and it's currently at $19M again. I think this weekend will tell us if its going to drop faster than Jumanji or if it continues to show the same tendencies

I mean, I may use insulting words but I never attacked him on a personal level. I always attacked him as a director. I believe that is a huge distinction.
People think when I call him arrogant, they think that's personal, but it isn't. Irl, he seems a pretty down to earth dude, but as a filmmaker, he's repeatedly proved that he deludes himself into believing he knows what's best based on his supposed knowledge, even when he was clearly lying (like how he said Batman kills tons of people in TDKR). That is me attacking his arrogance as a filmmaker, not him as a human being.
I don't know what Legend or JK have said specifically... I just believe in separating Snyder "the director", from Snyder "the person".
I have never and would never attack him personally. That's why I've never called him anything. You can actually check out all of my comments if you don't believe me.

I personally love BvS and was entertained by JL(despite the Frankenstein patch work by Whedon), but even as a fan I can admit it’s insane that an Aquaman film outsold films with Batman, Superman, WW and Flash in them. I agree. I just think they would still be in the “Stand Alone Only Franchise” films only mentality. Besides a mention of Steppenwolf, it really didn’t connect much, and a 1984 WW film also probably has little to no connection... BUT, now that a Fish Man story with comic accurate costumes has a shot at Iron Man 3 numbers, I’m thinking WB is ready to keep this universe connected to build off one another and hopefully lead towards that JL vs LoD movie that could do Avengers type money with the right amount of patience and effort.
