Warner Bros. Buys Out RatPac Dune Library

RatPac Dune may not be a name your familiar with, but it has been involved with making some of your favorite movies including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, and many more.

The company - formed by Brett Ratner and James Packer - had been looking for a buyer for some time and had found one in Vine Alternative Investments in the $290M to $300M range. Thanks to a clause in its financing deal with Warner Bros., the studio had a right to match the winning bid and automatically take control of the library.

RatPac Dune owned between 15 to 25 percent of 76 high-ticket films, and thanks to broadcast rights, home video sales, licensing, and so on, $300M was a bit of a steal. Getting the percentage of the DCEU films alone will do well for recouping the costs as there are sure to be future anniversary editions, boxed sets, and other ancillary sales.

The studio financed the movies with RatPac to mitigate risk I guess. But there was a huge story that exploded during WW release and in the midst of the #MeToo of Brett Ratner sexually harassing women. And Gal, allegedly, gave WB an ultimatum that they had to remove him from future productions of the franchise or she was out. I wonder if that had anything do to with RatPac selling its library.

Warner may own the copyrights and the physical films, but Ratpac, which was essentially a vehicle for rich people to invest in movies, owned x% of the revenue streams. Think of each movie as an individual business that you could invest in.

I don’t want to have any possible negative impact to the studio until these personal issues are resolved.” Ratner moved off the studio lot, and his producing credit on the upcoming Goldfinch project was also scrubbed."

This reminds me of the Harvey Weinstein creep. I am a huge Tarantino movie fan and Weinstein's name is all over the DVD's, posters, Soundtracks and so on. I cringe every time I see the name.
