Birds of Prey Screenwriter Discusses the Mixed Reaction to the Film's Full Title

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a mouthful of a movie title. Most people initially thought Marot Robbie (Harley Quin) was just messing around when she handwrote the rest of the title below the typed Birds of Prey on the script.

Robbie wasn't kidding, though, and the title is indeed real. Writer Christina Hodson wasn't going to give away any of the film's secrets in a conversation with Variety but noted that there are reasons for all of the additional verbiage.

"I think it sets the tone a little bit in that it’s a little tongue-in-cheek," Hodson said. "Emancipation means a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and we’re going to be exploring that in different ways."

Hodson was open and honest about the reaction to the title while keeping in mind that fans don't know the whole story yet. "[It's been] super mixed, but honestly I don’t have any social media, so I see very little of this stuff. Some people love it, some people think we’re nuts.

"People will just have to wait and see. I think it’s always hard when you’re doing something bold like that to do it without any context. There’s no marketing yet, we haven’t even started shooting. But all things will start to make sense as we get closer and closer to [premiere date] Feb. 7, 2020."

Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is an unusually long title. It isn't hashtag-friendly in the modern social media era, but criticism of the full title is much ado about nothing.

Most of the people talking about the film right now are going to shorten it to Birds of Prey and everyone else in the conversation is going to know what they're talking about. The same thing happened with Batman v Superman, as the Dawn of Justice subtitle was commonly left out.

Having Harley Quinn in the title will come in handy once the film starts to pop up on the general audience's radar. Birds of Prey may not mean a whole lot to them, but the breakout character of Suicide Squad will.

      I’d say I can be a conversation starter, though figuring out those minor details is my curse. Suddenly seeing someone’s “work” like an algebraic problem is bad.
      Granted, it’s not as good as saying “Hack Snyder” or “they messed up Batman, Superman & the DCEU” all the time, but hey, it’s the arrows my quivers hold. Didn’t realize inquiring to get more then just a vague answer was “adding nothing.” Perhaps what makes the DCEU “better” to you doesn’t to another forum member.

      I've crossed paths with Knight-Errant before. Dude is incredibly pedantic for the sake of it and often fails to grasp what is actually being communicated. I disagree there is any projection going on. My comment regarding anything negative said about Batman is from an earlier discussion I had with the special guy where he couldn't admit that Batman was paranoid as a personality characteristic, at least sometimes, even when he was given examples of his behavior exactly matched the dictionary definition, not to mention it being a well known character trait that has been explored a lot in his stories.
      I have not confused Autism and Aspergers. Aspergers no longer exists as distinct from Austistic and was rolled into the Autistic class of disorders.
      I don't Dwell on pedantic issues in the way I am accusing KE of. KE zeroes in on single words and debates the meaning missing the obvious meaning and context they are being used in, as though he is completely unable to grasp a point being made. I don't see how me having a strong opinion about Snyder is remotely similar. I like that my name annoys people and I haven't thought of anything better to switch it to.
      It's not about different viewpoints. It wasn't about his opinion or views at all. It's about his pattern of behavior of not being able to grasp and understand what people are saying and being pedantic and focusing on semantics without contributing anything to the discussion, likely because he can't understand what the discussion actually is.

      My attention to minor details is because it’s what I get paid to do. We had this conversation before. Solid detectives ask questions, pull those minor details (apparently you deem unimportant), & get people to elaborate on what they know. “The devil is in the details.”
      I assumed a fellow PI works for an investigative firm that wants a complete investigation; not a partial one.
      If I may, there’s a great book by Brent Turvey on criminal profiling. It helps you learn how to figure out what makes people tick. If you pair it with your standard nonverbal communication book, it’ll open up a whole new perceptive on people.

She is not generally a member of the birds so instead of having "featuring harley." they have used that title. Just call it birds prey.   Im more peeved by the film being called BoP than anything else. This is GCSirens without Barbara or Selena And ya, to say they are not making a point by purposely hiring woman director and writer and storyboard artist is silly. All power to them but from the title alone, this is more a statement.
  But most of all, i guess my problem is with the character of Harley and how awful it carried out on screen. No matter how good Robbie is.

I really want this movie to be good, but admittedly, I am curious as to how exactly they plan on handling Harley. She was clearly a deranged psycho in Suicide Squad. Not sure how she is supposed to work as an anti hero unless they decide to just retcon Suicide Squad(which would be largely preferable imo). Since it is likely that no official statements will be made on the matter, I will try to just pretend suicide squad didn't happen and just accept this version of the character as it is if it ends up being contradictory to what we saw before.

  I guess. I am just hoping that there is a very present discord and lack of trust between Harley and the others. I think that is primarily what concerns me here. That they are going to really try and make her into a good character. Though I want to think that there is no way the people involved with this film, including Robbie, are THAT oblivious. Especially considering the kind of character she was in suicide squad. But I could quite easily see them doing a whole "ah maybe she's not so bad" type thing at the end of the film.

        I find it very interesting you stated of "Knight-Errant", that and I quote, "you can't handle anything negative being said about Batman", would you say that this applies to you, or would you rather say that as your name seems to indicate that for you, it isn't so much about Batman but rather the Zack Snyder, and that everything that you said and accused "Knight-Errant" of, in reality applies to yourself as well, and that although you might not be autistic (you might have confused autistic and Aspergers) that you do find yourself dwelling on "pedantic" issues. For this week's psychological exercise I want you to really look inside and find the answer to does it really matter, and find an honest answer or yourself. Does it really matter that people like or dislike Snyder films, does it really matter that "Knight-Errant" has got a different viewpoint to myself and that he was merely illustrating a flaw in your argument, does it really matter if you respond or not. After you have meditated on these questions, and the answer turns out to be yes, then we shall continue on this journey to psychological fulfillment.
        PS, the unhealthy emotional connection that you refer to is just as unhealthy as being aggressive towards others for asking for clarification of your opinion to either be persuaded or dissuaded of their current position.

        I've crossed paths with Knight-Errant before. Dude is incredibly pedantic for the sake of it and often fails to grasp what is actually being communicated. I disagree there is any projection going on. My comment regarding anything negative said about Batman is from an earlier discussion I had with the special guy where he couldn't admit that Batman was paranoid as a personality characteristic, at least sometimes, even when he was given examples of his behavior exactly matched the dictionary definition, not to mention it being a well known character trait that has been explored a lot in his stories.
        I have not confused Autism and Aspergers. Aspergers no longer exists as distinct from Austistic and was rolled into the Autistic class of disorders.
        I don't Dwell on pedantic issues in the way I am accusing KE of. KE zeroes in on single words and debates the meaning missing the obvious meaning and context they are being used in, as though he is completely unable to grasp a point being made. I don't see how me having a strong opinion about Snyder is remotely similar. I like that my name annoys people and I haven't thought of anything better to switch it to.
        It's not about different viewpoints. It wasn't about his opinion or views at all. It's about his pattern of behavior of not being able to grasp and understand what people are saying and being pedantic and focusing on semantics without contributing anything to the discussion, likely because he can't understand what the discussion actually is.
        I wasn't aggressive in seeking clarification, I was aggressive in calling out a behavior I find frustrating.

        I cannot figure out which is more humorous; letting you believe you had some intellectual high ground or your belief you’re some type of arbiter who decides what a sense of humor is composed of & when posts add/detract from conversations.
        This is great.
        My attention to minor details is because it’s what I get paid to do. We had this conversation before. Solid detectives ask questions, pull those minor details (apparently you deem unimportant), & get people to elaborate on what they know. “The devil is in the details.”
        I assumed a fellow PI works for an investigative firm that wants a complete investigation; not a partial one.
        If I may, there’s a great book by Brent Turvey on criminal profiling. It helps you learn how to figure out what makes people tick. If you pair it with your standard nonverbal communication book, it’ll open up a whole new perceptive on people.

        And no, I'm a PI as well. You're full of shit. You're job doesn't cover your acted as pedantic as you do, it doesn't dictate you act that way at all, and it's entirely possible to be an ace detective and not be as utterly and deliberately obtuse as you are. If you act at all like you act online I would guess you are an absolutely terrible detective, since you can't pick up on what is very obvious.
        Good PIs don't drive away people, don't blow their cover and can pick up on context and put together what is obvious. I'm guessing you are limited to divorce cases or something else trivial?
        Maybe you should give how to win friends and influence a people, since you seem to have such trouble communicating with people and picking up on obvious contextual clues.

        I can’t speak for how your company does business. I can only speak for how my employer operates. Yes, seeing competitor reports & dealing with subcontractors, we go above & beyond being detailed oriented. We ask follow up questions (even if we know the answer) to close every door opened in a conversation. What you’re reading as “pedantic” & “being obtuse” has benefitted my employer for over 25 years.
        Actually, good investigators get people to talk. That’s not talking down to them. That’s about knowing how to read people & understanding the best approach, sometimes playing the Columbo role. It’s about being able to paint a Picasso when you only start off with a stick drawing.
        Just because I’ve “pushed you away” (though I’d argue I haven’t), doesn’t mean I do the same to someone I’m looking to gather information from.
        Actually, in the 6 months I worked in the surveillance department, I never worked a domestic. For the last 14 years working in the investigative department, I haven’t either. Not sure our department would be what those clients are looking for. Those clients generally want video of their spouses cheating. Haha, it’s not like I work for Cheaters; the ambulance chasers of private investigators.
        Based on our chats, I’d say “How to Win Friends & Influence People” would be like watching a rerun.

She is not generally a member of the birds so instead of having "featuring harley." they have used that title. Just call it birds prey. Or dont call it anything and dismiss the entire film based on the title and get on with your lives. Either way just shut the fuck up.

    Everyone deserves an opinion but it feels alot of people just don't like something because it's out of the ordinary. They won't be happy unless all films conform to a standard. No films can have a title with more then four words. Since when? It feels like they are complaining just a complaint against creativity.

This is GCSirens without Barbara or Selena And ya, to say they are not making a point by purposely hiring woman director and writer and storyboard artist is silly. All power to them but from the title alone, this is more a statement.
    But most of all, i guess my problem is with the character of Harley and how awful it carried out on screen. No matter how good Robbie is.

I really want this movie to be good, but admittedly, I am curious as to how exactly they plan on handling Harley. She was clearly a deranged psycho in Suicide Squad. Not sure how she is supposed to work as an anti hero unless they decide to just retcon Suicide Squad(which would be largely preferable imo). Since it is likely that no official statements will be made on the matter, I will try to just pretend suicide squad didn't happen and just accept this version of the character as it is if it ends up being contradictory to what we saw before.

    I guess. I am just hoping that there is a very present discord and lack of trust between Harley and the others. I think that is primarily what concerns me here. That they are going to really try and make her into a good character. Though I want to think that there is no way the people involved with this film, including Robbie, are THAT oblivious. Especially considering the kind of character she was in suicide squad. But I could quite easily see them doing a whole "ah maybe she's not so bad" type thing at the end of the film.
