Aquaman Tops $200M Domestic and Passes Wonder Woman Worldwide

Aquaman is now the second-highest grossing movie in the current DC Films era. James Wan's oceanic adventure passed Wonder Woman ($821.8M) at the global box office yesterday. Aquaman has earned $822M globally with its sights set on topping Batman v Superman ($873.6M) next.

The domestic box office continues to favor Aquaman. The film earned $16.8M yesterday, raising its total in North America to $216M. It will begin its climb up the DCEU domestic charts by topping Justice League ($229M) later this week.

China remains the biggest market for Aquaman. The only superhero film to top Aquaman's $275M total in the Middle Kingdom is Avengers: Infinity War ($359.5M).

Aquaman will continue playing in China into February and faces little competition in North America until Glass opens on January 18. It's a virtual lock to top $900M globally and remains in the hunt to be DC's first billion-dollar-movie since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.

Why do people put so much emphasis on China? Studios get a 25% cut at most from there so what’s the point really? On paper it looks good but that sadly does not translate to good profit.

If the film wasn't doing well elsewhere you might have a point but that profit combined with the profit from everywhere else means WB have made a lot from this especially when the film didn't have a OTT budget like BvS and JL.

The profit alone from China is better than most MCU movies. 25% of the gross there(almost 300 mil) would mean Warner Bros. receives almost 70 million profit. The total gross of most MCU movies barely exceed 100 mil in China so profit is drastically less than Aquaman's.

    I don't think so. Yes, WW is hands down the better movie, but it just wasn't as grand as Aquaman, which really went balls to the wall with the spectacle. And Chinese people have proven time and again that they care very little for story . The Transformers franchise made ridiculous money there, and those films are almost as trash as BvS.

    LOVE wonder woman to this day and if it had the same grandiose spectacle as Aquaman it probably wouldve made a billion too. It overtook almost all solo superhero movies in the USA during the time of its release and even beat out Civil War domestically. It just needed the spectacle that international audiences crave.

    I think Loki was also forgettable the first time I watched Thor... but then they gave him film after film after film, and he had a lot more space to work. I'm not saying I want to see Orm in like 40% or DCEU films (like they did with Loki), but Since Orm will still be out there in the sequel, perhaps we'll see more of him

The $300M domestic is now the mark to beat. The day before yesterday, the difference between Jumanji and AQM fell a little bit, mainly because Jumanji got its "new years day boost" at that same point in time. Now that it was AQM's turn to have that boost yesterday, the gap between both films has actually increased to $20.9M at the same point in time (12 days after their release). The gap between them in their first Friday was $3.5M, and it was $11.4 after the first four days. The Hobbit: an unexpected journey, is pretty much toast. It actually had an advantage over AQM after its third day of almost $12M. Now it's $48M behind at the same point in time

      The time I "wasted" was less than 2 min per film. As I told OGmacrazy once, I don't do this to see who replies, or to see who appreciates it. I do this because its a hobby. I'm also a big sports fan and I like to keep track of my favorite QB's performance or my favorite goalscorer's stats. I'm a "stats fan". Waited until New Year's Day to go see it....loved everything about it. Still wish they would have selected a more comic accurate book actor, and kept Momoa for Lobo, but he did a decent enough job. The actor playing Ocean Master would have actually made a perfect comic accurate Aquaman, and he is a good actor. Oh well, the movie was visual candy with a great story and meant to be seen on the big screen. Liked it WAY better than Black Panther, and on par with WW. Kidman's performance was actually really good. I even teared up a little. Can't wait for Aquaman 2...they must be working on a deal now.

I hope it beats out Snyder's crap-fest BvS. Compare that move to Aquaman and you see Snyder's storytelling flaws, with scenes all over the f-place, no cohesion, and pacing slow as hell. Aquaman had none of those issue, each story element flowed into the next and completed a nice overarching story arc. Way to go Wan.

This movie's success is cathartic as hell.

Not only does it help shift the narrative on the sadly underwhelming performance of the rest of the DCEU, but it just so happens to be with the one character in the Justice League that has been made fun of the most: AQUAMAN.

      The basic definition of emo is: overly sensitive or full of angst. Brooding doesn't automatically mean that the character is emo. If that was the case then a majority of superheroes would be emo because most of them tend to brood at some point in their life. Some heroes just do it more than others.       She's bigger then Wonder Woman right now and DC's shining star. There's a big reason WB let Robbie make anything she wanted involving Harley and that's because Harley is huge and Robbie's Harley is bloody massive. She alone sold SS and she was the reason i expect it made so much money, she's mega popular and one of the few characters who some regular joe who doesn't follow this stuff would at the very least recognize. Harley is pretty much now one of the most well known female comic book characters out there, the only other ones what are at that level is Wonder Woman obviously, Black Window, Catwoman, Supergirl and at a push Poison Ivy (because a good mount of Batman's rogues are fairly well known) and maybe Storm from X-Men.

    They never said scrapped their entire idea for Cap 3, while the CW part was most likely a result of BvS the Bucky stuff was clearly always planned as TWS set all that up.
    Also no Marvel will never care for how much DC films make because the MCU is the biggest and most popular film franchise in history. They have a film what has cracked 2 billion and another 5 what have gone over the Billion mark and they can make anything and it will do well. DC has to rely on its characters to sell while Marvel's name alone (hell i know people who watched Venom purely because it was Marvel) is enough to get people watching, when Marvel is more popular then something like Star Wars now then DC is nothing to them other a friendly rival (because unlike fanboys they aren't bothered by one another).

    Lets go with the facts. Mos opened and had mixed reviews and didnt have really good legs. BvS followed and the audience supported it because its (Batman v Superman) that name alone wouldve brought a huge crowd, but the audience abandoned it on the second weekend, so its massive opening saved the movie. SS was a real miracle and overperformed, so i wont take anything from its success. WW,well we all know why it overperformed, but the movie was good so people supported it. Now JL was a direct sequel to BvS and the audience didnt even bother to show up and it flopped, so what was suppose to be the greatest movie in the dceu completely flopped, even though it had pretty good legs but its budget overshadowed it. Now aquaman is here and its doing pretty good because its a good, fun film with great legs.

      Again, check his thread. You're saying the exact same stuff that others said, but like he told them, that's not the point of his tweet. He's not talking about legs or second week. He's solely talking about box office total.

      No, who said anything about bombing? You're completely missing the point of what I am saying.
      I'm saying DCEU movies make money even when they are badly reviewed, which is not something that we can readily say about MCU movies yet. That's not saying MCU movies don't make money.

      "I'm saying DCEU movies make money even when they are badly reviewed" While kinda true it is a flawed argument, the DCEU has been putting out films with Superman and Batman who are two of the most well characters in fiction out there with Batman being mega popular, it stands to reason a Batman and Superman film could make more then Cap's or Thor's very first films, however its worth noting each new film in their series has made more then the last while Batman films Post Rises has made less then the last. SS is hard to say why it done so well but it did have great marketing and Harley and Joker and Will Smith were big sells to audiences. Finally while DCEU films have all made over 600m JL was still a massive flop, it lost WB money and even if it made them money the film what is meant to be the "biggest greatest DC film ever" making less then 700m is still really bad, the MCU has never had a flop at that level (Hulk flopped yes but no where near as bad as JL).

I know is not the be all but I would love if it reached the 1 Billion mark. I don't know how realistic that is, maybe someone here who's good with numbers can tell me if it's possible.

God damn. I forgot how much TDK and Rises really brought to the table. People always talk about its effect on cinema, but sometimes we truly forget just how bloody much money they made. Even BB, while not hitting the 1B mark, still greatly surpassed its budget and turned a huge profit.

Literally every single Nolan film since TDK has been a massive Box Office powerhouse. Its a hopeful reminder that sometimes talent really /does/ bring in money.

Footnote: It's such a shame The Prestige had a fairly average intake. I definitely rank The Prestige in Nolan's Top 3 - beneath Inception and The Dark Knight.

I find this very interesting and curious, the movie is nothing beyond pretty visuals, the script is generic and mediocre as hell, there is nothing new but the setting, otherwise is a cookie cutter superhero origins movie, how come the success? It does not even has the avalanche of forced jokes in it like the mcu does, so it is pretty odd

Having now seen Aquaman (even though it was released ages ago in the UK!) I can honestly say that I truly enjoyed it! Is it a remarkable film that sets new heights for Superhero movies? No and I’m so pleased that for once I could just go and enjoy a good, (very good) solid action movie! This films look great, and really establishes Momoa as Aquaman. I like the fact that all of the main cast were left alive so that we can enjoy watching the Aquaman universe build. I enjoyed all of the main characters and was convinced by all of the performances. Yes it had a lot going on, all the time, but I thought that was great. What a great journey James Wan and cast take you on. I really don’t like that Comic book movies have become so heavily scrutinised, it my opinion it’s detracting from their origin of escapism and fantasy, which Aquaman has in bucket loads.

It really does look like Aquaman could reach the 1bill mark, which is truely fantastic, both for Wan and Momoa and the DCEU as a whole.

I hope we get some solid news about the new slate for 2020 and beyond, as i am really hopeful for the future of this franchise going forward. Most of that is thanks to Aquaman and how well it turned out.
