Aquaman Tops Justice League and Man of Steel at the Worldwide Box Office

on Aquaman Tops Justice League and Man of Steel at the Worldwide Box Office

Aquaman is on its way to being the fourth highest-grossing movie in the current DC Films era. James Wan's undersea epic has amassed $666.1M in global box office receipts through yesterday. That puts the film ahead of Justice League ($657.9M) and sets it up to pass Man of Steel ($668M) today.

There is little doubt at this point that Aquaman will go on to become the highest-grossing film in all of the DCEU. Suicide Squad ($746.8M) will be the next fall before Aquaman eventually tops Wonder Woman ($821.8M) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873.6M).

Aquaman earned another $17.1M at the domestic box office on Friday, setting a course for $52.1M in its second weekend. If that holds, Aquaman will have only dropped 23% from its $67.4M first weekend. Even if we go back and count the preview screenings, Aquaman's drop is an impressive 28%.

This second weekend proves Aquaman has a powerful pair of box office legs. The competition is minimal for weeks to come, so Aquaman should have no trouble keeping its current pace and staying on top.

Once again, am I the only one who gets some satisfaction out of seeing people go from "Aquaman gonna flop against Bumblebee and Mary Poppins, DC fails LOLZ" to "OMG pls stop giving money to Aquaman"?

Finally saw it. Thought it was okay. Pretty entertaining, cool visuals, cool action, great third act. But I do agree with what a lot of people are saying in that the whole thing is kind of goofy an cheesy in a way. Very comicbooky as well. Definitely a solid popcorn film. Didn't dislike it but didn't love it(but again, third act was really cool though). Bit of a mixed bag but ultimately enjoyed the overall experience. I do kind of want to see it again though so maybe my mind will change after a second viewing.

Really fantastic news. Aquaman's BO performance has far succeeded my expectations. However, I did think that if it at least matched or crossed JL's performance, it would be a hit in WB's eyes. Since it's going to do that and MORE, it's going to be a SMASH hit.

No, I have absolutely no investment in this film whatsoever, both emotionally and financially. So I don't really care what money it makes. You on the other hand seem to be so desperate for this movie to be successful, you look and sound like an investor desperate for validation on his business. But since you obviously didn't, it's all emotional and it's just funny to witness really.

Does the Shazam easter eggs seem right to you? will it be ok then? or perhaps the note about the Joker being an anticipated movie. Silly me! I was posting comments about the Joker movie in that note. You should read this thread once you cool down, it'll probably put things into prespective. I've seen this a lot. You were challenged and you fucking hate it, then you lash out in an agressive manner. This is beyond ridiculous. You actually took a word I wrote (mad) and immediately threw it against me in what I can only describe as what children do. Now mind you, I'm not calling you a child, just childish in your approach. All this to say you are extremely closed off and are talking about a subject you obviously know very little about and you do not accept any advise or will to learn which is beyond pathetic.

For those who said this film wouldn't have jumanji-like legs ($400+M domestic):
First Friday (total gross): JMJ $28.9M vs AM $32.5M ($3.6M gap)
    Saturday: $43.7 vs $53.8 ($10.1 gap)
    Sunday: $43.7 vs $72.7 ($29 gap)
Monday: $71.9 vs $83.6 ($11.7 gap... this was X-mas day boost for JMJ)
Tuesday: $88.9 vs $105.7 ($16.8 gap... X-mas day boost for AM)
    Wednesday: $104.1 vs $122.6 ($18.5 gap)
    Thursday: $118.9 vs $137.2 ($18.2 gap)
    Friday: $136.1 vs $154.3 (18.2 gap)
Jumanji then has a weekend gross of $32.4, while AM weekend estimates are $48-50M
    Numbers... numbers...

    1. OGmacrazy Avatar
      OGmacrazy

Jumanji legs doesn't mean 400M+ domestic, it means 700M domestic.

      1. drisraelluna Avatar
        drisraelluna

No, it means similar drop percentages comparing one day to the one before. You can talk about "3 day total", "5 day totals", "10 day totals", "multipliers" and stuff like that. But there is ALWAYS a starting point. And the starting point for both movies was the first Friday, without previews, and as I wrote, there was only a $3.6M gap between both. EVERY drop percentage after that (the "legs") counts that number as a starting point. Similar drops with a similar opening day means a similar amount of money in the end

        1. OGmacrazy Avatar
          OGmacrazy

Again, using the term legs literally means you think this movie will have a 10x multiplier at the domestic box office. And it won't. That comparison is beyond ridiculous.

          1. drisraelluna Avatar
            drisraellunareplying to OGmacrazy

10x multiplier out of a $32M start equals $320M. I don't care what other numbers you wish to throw in, THAT is the starting point, and $300M+/- doesn't seem like an "idiotic number" at this point

          2. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to drisraelluna

What on Earth are you even talking about? Didn't Aquaman open with 67 Million? The fuck is this?

          3. drisraelluna Avatar
            drisraellunareplying to OGmacrazy

No. It opened on Friday with $32.5M. Opening DAY. That's the stating point, not the "opening weekend", nor the "5 day total". A race starts with the first step, not with the first couple o meters

          4. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to drisraelluna

OMG For all that fucking "analysis" you sure know jackshit about how box office numbers actually work. Just a quick tip: Legs reffers to multipliers and holds; Multiplier refers to how much a movie makes by the end of it's run based on it's opening weekend.
I've literally seen you state that Wonder Woman had a 4x multiplier. Literally no one, on planet Earth, has ever used Multiplier reffering to the opening day. It's just you and you alone lol

        2. OGmacrazy Avatar
          OGmacrazy

And if we're talking "similar drop percentages" Aquaman will drop this weekend, Jumanji improved on it's second. Jumanji made about as much in it's second friday as Aquaman did. So there goes that meaning for "legs".

          1. drisraelluna Avatar
            drisraellunareplying to OGmacrazy

about as much = similar. Where exactly is my mistake? Either you're just being ridiculous, or you're just another troll. Just don't mind my comments if they bother you or if you find them ridiculous; I really don't care. I don't post that stuff to see who replies to my comments... but you really seem desperate to prove your point

          2. OGmacrazy Avatar
            OGmacrazyreplying to drisraelluna

Legs doesn't equal how much it makes. Legs is literally reffering to holds and multipliers ffs. How have you not learned this with all that box office "information"? LMAO

          3. drisraelluna Avatar
            drisraellunareplying to OGmacrazy

Now I have to quote myself because you seem to be so dumb you can't even read. Here, let me refresh your short term memory: "it means similar drop percentages comparing one day to the one before"
But you know what, dude? Whatever. I'll just keep posting these numbers whether you find them funny, annoying, stupid, or they just hurt your butt. As I told you, I don't do it because I want to see who replies, nor do I care what you may think about my posts. I do, however, find it quite ridiculous that you're so desperate to prove you're right and engage in a discussion with someone whose comments you find silly. But then again, it's not a first for you... either you don't have any real people to talk to, or you're just sick. But, again: whatever

Still a bit concerning though). It was honestly a problem for me in WW as well. I know war is war and she doesnt have a problem killing but...idk. Just seems doesnt seem as "heroic". Marvel clearly chose a different path and, in the process, redefined the cinematic superhero genre. I still find it hard to believe for example that Ms. Marvel, an obscure Marvel Comics character now( cynically) renamed Captain Marvel, is about to become bigger than Wonder Woman or Barman. That illustrates Marvel's newly found mass-media power.

The real issue was letting Snyder work on JL before BvS was released. They should've waited a bit longer, and then just give the whole project to whedon or someone capable of handling all of these characters. JL never had a chance because the audience hated bvs and didn't show up for its sequel, i mean 90m on opening weekend is a sign that most people wasnt interested in a bvs sequel.

A lot of different things went wrong but IMO the first thing was that JL went into production before WB could guage the response to BvS and corrected course pretty fast. Things were already screwed by the time Joss showed up.

BvS made $870 million and was the first sign that the DCEU would be successful for years and years to come. Aquaman is just the latest proof that no reboot is coming any time soon.

In fact, it is the golden age of non-Batman DC movies, and it is all thanks to the world started with MoS and BvS.

Here's some food for thought if BvS opened to JL numbers it would have had made less then JL's overall total, JL actually weirdly had better legs then BvS, if it had the opening BvS had it would have made close to a billion.

You see, if you think that JL is a better movie than Batman v Superman, you trully deserve to have bad, forced comedy, and generic popcorn movies. You think that the audience liked JL more than BvS, but when you watch their scores:

            JL: 6.5/10 with 302,372 votes

You're just a bunch of hypocrite autist who jerk on MCU movies, great because you're only serving Disney's cause, and more shitty movies from them like Ant-man 2 will come with the famous "certified fresh tomatometer critics scrore" of 88%, whereas a DC movie like Aquaman will pass from 76% to 63% when the movie is released in the U.S. Thanks to U.S and UK people like you we will soon watch DC movies 2 months after the others

A Batman v Superman on screen for the first time, with WW making only 870m from a 420m opening isnt impressive, it underperformed and took its sequel down with it. Also, JL has a better score from critics and audience alike, so most people liked it more than bvs, not just me.

          28. myzterius Avatar
            myzteriusreplying to Kryptonian Knight

BvS had a big opening weekend because of hype only, it dropped 70% the following week breaking a record. It had to crawl and barely made it to 870m with terrible legs. So you're right, people stopped putting their money on this shitty film and didnt care about its sequel.

BvS blu ray sales had a great marketing plan by adding 30 extra minutes to the film, even me who hated the film was curious and bought a copy(returned it since the movie was still crap). If JL came out with additional 30 min plus on bluray, it'd probably do similar numbers or outperform it. JL had better legs than BvS, while BvS couldnt even double its opening of 166m and finished 330m. Its the only movie in history to open with 420m w.w and not being able to cross the billion dollar mark. So the audience didnt put their money where their mouth is on BvS. Also, box office numbers does not determine a movies quality and vice versa.

Great film to who? That movie wasn’t even close to the level of the original, it failed because it was slow as hell and far from entertaining and the box office reflects that. If people were so entertained by the film they would have at least bought the DVD. DVD sales reflects real interest because it shows people want it, it’s why I rarely believe when people try to say MOS was not liked, it’s DVD sales is evidence that people liked it so much it’s one of the top selling superhero DVD. But I don’t know why you are carrying on with this you liked JL and I hated it, your using poor rating to demonstrate more people liked it and I’m using the box office which is the king of Hollywood. I was highly entertained by the Batman fights, batcave, bat mobile, Batman costume and WW in BvS, there was absolutely zero elements that entertained me in JL but go ahead and enjoy it the rest of your days.

The original had weak as fuck writing and beyond Rutger Hauer's character and his performance, the movie didn't offer anything particularly interesting or thematically satisfying. It had bits of depth here and there, but overall, its themes were drastically underdeveloped and its storytelling was all over the place.

The new one should absolutely be remembered and talked about as one of the best sequels of all time. It took everything the original had going for it like it's concept, setting and tone and added an interesting main character with an actual arc, actual detective work and mistery, and a fucking plot. I found it immensely satisfying. And I ain't even a hater of the original or anything, I quite enjoy it. But it's really not what some people make it out to be. I'm sure the praise for the original goes mainly to its visual design and world, rather than its themes and story. Again, it felt like there was something there, but they never did anything with it in the end.

Blade Runner has a pretty significant cult fandom that will write essays on why it is some deep masterpiece. Idk about all that, but I do not necessarily think that the themes are superficial however. That being said, I mostly liked it because of the aesthetic and atmosphere. I think that is a big part of its significance. 2049 is great though imo. You will probably think it is a lot stronger in terms of story and themes.

Perhaps the production values were ahead of its time and its world and ideas may have inspired other work... but the thing is, release the original today, and no one would care about it, because the story just isn't there.
Take the love story for example, we see the female replicant for 2 seconds, then they randomly "fall in love", despite zero character development, and we don't even get to see her again till the end of the film. Just poor execution all around.

I simply cannot understand someone who says the original had good writing or story. It was an extremely superficial film. Brilliant and groundbreaking visuals for sure, but nothing else really stands out. All the characters, besides Rutger Hauer, are paper thin and basically nobody has an arc to speak of lol

Waiting over 30 years to do a sequel was not a smart move but at least the original is constantly regarded as a game changer in the sci-fi genre where 2049 made no such impact. And box office and marketing today is a completely different ball game then what they were in the early 80’s. Even you are smart enough to know that.

Lol excuses and more excuses. The movie flopped back in the 80s and it flopped in 2017, according to you, people speak with their dollars. Dont give me that "bit but...it was a game changer" speech you got online, most people still havent seen the original, game changer my ass.

You want to compare box office and marketing today with what it used to be in the early 80’s really? You can type in best sci-fi films of all time and Blade Runner is usually in all those lists and since you like using RT as a reference it rated higher with critics and audience. But don’t confuse an excuse with a reality marketing in the 80’s is nowhere near as sophisticated and important as it is today, not even close.

Look at the amount of people who rated blade runner, compared with 2049... Nobody is talking about marketing, so this conversation is irrelevant. Blade runner 2049 can also be found in some list, that proves nothing lol.

I saw Blade Runner (Final Cut version) for the first time two weeks ago (haven't seen 2049 yet), and I gotta say that it is one of the most overrated films I've ever seen. It's decent sure, but nowhere near the "smart" and "groundbreaking" film fanboys make it out to be. It is thematically shallow, thinly scripted (except for some awesome lines at the end) with weak characters and confusing storytelling (and not in a "it's too smart to keep up with" kind of way).

Yes, its definitely overrated, but i haven't watch the film in yearsss so i dont remember it very well. You should definitely watch the new one, its not "revolutionary" but its pretty good, and definitely better than the first. Villeneuve never disappoints me.

Yes there was Suicide Squad between Batman v Superman and Wonder Woman, but Justice League was a direct sequel to Wonder Woman with humongous marketing. I don't see how a movie called "Batman v Superman" must be the direct sequel to a movie called "Justice League" whereas "Wonder Woman" is one of its main members and was released juuuuust before.

"So giving credit to BvS for WW success is pretty dumb. That would be like giving credit to Justice league for aquamans success."

And Wonder Woman, despite having big flaws like its thirds act, which reminds some empty airport in another movie, was a success thanks to its predecessor Batman v Superman. "Yes there was Suicide Squad between Batman v Superman and Wonder Woman, but Justice League was a direct sequel to Wonder Woman with humongous marketing."

Just because ss and ww were between bvs and jl, it dont make them sequels to bvs. SS was its own thing and didn't continue bvs story and featured different characters, ww happened 100 years before bvs and was an origin movie that didnt continue the events in bvs.

" I don't see how a movie called "Batman v Superman" must be the direct sequel to a movie called "Justice League" whereas "Wonder Woman" is one of its main members and was released juuuuust before."

The movie was called Batman v superman DAWN OF JUSTICE. It teased every member from the league, it teased steppen wolf towards the end, and continued supes story with his resurrection. The convo bruce had with diana at Clarks funeral was about forming THE JUSTICE LEAGUE. Now if thats not a direct sequel that continued the events in bvs, then i dont know what is. You're so deep in denial that its pretty sad.

            "
And Wonder Woman, despite having big flaws like its thirds act, which reminds some empty airport in another movie, was a success thanks to its predecessor Batman v Superman."

Marvel has nothing to do with the convo, i still dont know why youre mad about their success. Explain to me how WW was successful because of BvS? Thay makes zero sense since she was barely in the movie, and the movie was trashed by fans and critics alike with a terrible performance. Yes, she was one of the highlights of the movie, but WW success does not come from it, just like aquamans success does not come from JL.

"You know what, you're bunch of hypocrite autist who cried for a reboot, who didn't believe in a "fish", and all those people you call "Snydertard" were promoting Aquaman in the social networks just to see more DCEU movies they like. Now dig it babe."

Now youre just making up a whole bunch of bullshit. I mever called anybody a "snydertard", and its funny that all the "snyderfans" you claim is defending aquaman, were the first one to criticize the movie and its tone and colorful jokes, saying that they lost interest and that dc is "stealing marvels formula" just like they criticized Shazam, but of course they'll jump ship if the movie becomes successful.

Now ive explained to you why JL is a direct sequel to BvS, which was part of snyders 5 movie story ark. You guys were crying about JOSSTICE league because it didnt answer the questions you had from bvs, you know? Snyders vision and all that was suppose to give the "knightmare" from bvs meaning in JL? I said it would beat Venom domestically with fucking ease, which was so damn hard for you to get, until I made clear AM had already beaten Venom on a daily basis (it's not around 30M ahead, in the same timespan) and would undoubtedly beat both Venom AND JL. Then you made it all about WW numbers, which I never said ANYTHING about beyond simply making a conservative guess that it would probably gross around 800M. I however, NEVER claimed it would definitely beat Venom's ww gross, because at the time, it was impossible to tell just how well AM's legs were going to be... You ridiculed me for even entertaining the idea that it could possibly reach 800M, never mind 850M. The very next day, an article comes out saying AM has a shot at 1B, and you're nowhere to be seen. Yes, because I get notifications on my phone and I have no choice but to read them before I swipe them away. Why is that so hard to understand? I need to know what the email contains before I can swipe them away (because I get dozens of emails every day, most of which I check via my phone and most of which are pretty important). If I had my PC at the time, I most certainly wouldn't have read it, as my phone shows the context of the email as notifications, not the authors themselves: meaning I HAVE to read them before I know what the fuck they contain.

Even IF I grant you that I am a "liar" (for simply reading the last bit of your stupid reply... Jesus fucking Christ man, you truly have deluded standards in life), you're still a hypocrite, because you outright LIED about me saying AM would definitely beat venom's WW gross (which is something I NEVER said). That is an objective example of you LYING. So even if you assume the worst in me, you are NO better and have NO fucking right judging me for supposedly "lying". So try harder next time and actually lead by example, instead of saying do as I say, not as I do.

"How are you in the right?"
After this weekend, AM will be 25M shy of Venom's domestic gross. There's ZERO chance AM won't beat that figure the days thereafter. I proved my original point: AM is drastically outpacing Venom and that is a fact. That was my original argument. The evidence has come out since I made that claim and it's overwhelming. That is how I am right. Again boy, try harder.

"Oh yeah, your not and you even went on to say that AM being in the 700M range would be a “safe bet”."
            You're* you idiot.
Also, of course that's a safe bet, as there was no one it wouldn't reach 700M. What the fuck are you even talking about??? I specified later on that 700M would be minimum, and it would more likely come close to 800M, which I now see were conservative guesses, at best. That doesn't change the fact that I also EXPLICITLY and REPEATEDLY stated that I didn't know if those guesses would be accurate (only that it would definitely gross more than 700M, because that much was already clear), as not enough evidence had come out, at the time.

"I have actually shown when you have lied"
No you haven't. Because I didn't. I didn't go through your whole reply (or 2 last replies, I don't remember). I saw an email, knew you wrote it, then swiped it away, but I saw that last sentence, which I immediate confessed was too hard for me not to respond to. You just refuse to accept it and project your lying behavior unto me.

Besides, even IF you were right... I can say the same to you: I have actually shown when you have lied. Get fucked.

"and all you have done is cry and go on a tantrum on how much of a good guy you are"

As I said, your standards are fucking pathetic.

"seriously what’s it like to have such little control of your emotions"

"that some guy you don’t know can get under your skin so much"

Yet again you lie, because I never said I couldn't see it (go back and find me the comment in which I said that... good luck, LIAR). I never said I had to open an email. I said that the text WITHIN the email is displayed as a not on my phone. Therefore I don't have to open them (kinda like how messages from messenger appear as nots on your phone, without having to open the messenger app itself). Thank you for lying yet again. It must suck to be so mentally weak to be beaten so badly, that you make this entirely about reading a fucking line. Jesus fucking Christ, your standards in life are worryingly low.
No point in me replying anymore, cause I've said everything that I wanted to and you obviously can't provide one legitimate argument. I won't be reading anymore, cause right now I'm on my PC, and I can immediately delete your emails via hotmail. Don't even have to open them.
            Bye now, child.

It’s sad that you just can’t admit you did something you wouldn’t do but hey, that’s what you are all about. I look forward to AM passing 800M now just so you can have one victory.

Whenever someone says Ben Affleck's Batman is terrifying, I show them that gif. Say what you will about Bale's chain-smoker voice, at least Bale never looked like a nerdy cosplayer with a goofy ass smile like Ben did there.

Hence the number one reason I hate JL, they took an intimidating powerful Batman and turned him into a smiling fool.
