on Aquaman Rules Christmas Box Office with $22M; Passes $100M Domestic

Aquaman was the preferred choice of merry moviegoers this year. The film made $22M yesterday, making it just the sixth film ever to top $20M on Christmas. The holiday boost lifted Aquaman’s domestic box total to $105.7M.

James Wan’s oceanic superhero adventure has kept pace with its initial box office tracking. Aquaman was expected to top $65M in its first three days and $100M in five. It’s done exactly that.

Aquaman scored $68M in its opening weekend and even if you remove the $4.7M from preview screenings, the film surpassed $100M domestic in its first five days. That is an impressive start that bodes well for the weeks ahead.

Most movies get a little extra love from Christmas audiences, but Aquaman’s performance yesterday was more than that. This is an indication that moviegoers are recommending the film more than any others in the marketplace.

New competition is going to be minimal for the next couple of weeks. All Aquaman has to do now is stay out in front of the other December films its already beaten in order to have a great domestic run.

    box office update:
    $22M Christmas for the Atlantean. Currently at near $106M domestic; I think good legs and word of moth may well take the film to $280-$300
    China BO as of today is $247M and with an extended run until Feb 6; big chance to end over Venom's $270
    That's $550+ between ONLY TWO countries
    In Korea, it is almost tied with BS with $15.6M (15.7 for BvS total run); currently only below The Dark Knight with $24M and TDR $42M as highest grossing DC film

    Aquaman should be at 200 million domestic by this weekends end. Movie is going to come close to a billion depending on if domestic numbers hit 300 million or not.

      Agree, at this point domestic box office is crucial within the next 2-3 weeks will determine a lot and if it can hit that 300 mark, definitely a billiion blockbuster considering that the international box office continues to hit towards that 650-700 mil by Jan - Feb 2019....

    You see this is what happens when people actually like or love the film and give great word of mouth despite mediocre reviews, for instance my Mum's best mate hates comic book films but she saw it because her children wanted to see it and she actually ended up loving it, she is now going with my Mum (who loves comic book films) soon to see it again as she loved it so much. Compare this with BvS and JL and well its clear it wasn't just poor reviews what sunk those films, they lacked audience love something what Aquaman very clearly has as the box office is proving.

    Me well i love the film and seeing it a 3rd time next week as i'm taking my Sister to it.

Despite word of mouth, there is a HIGH chance that repeated viewings were part of the total box office number, no matter how small the percentage was. This is common sense, dude.

            It made almost half of its box office (420m)just with the opening weekend, which was due to hype and the characters. It opened with 166m domestically and only finished with 330, which is terrible legs and terrible wom. Below a 2x multiplier.

            I never said they didn't for SS. BvS had a record braking 2nd week drop and more bigger then normal drops after though, AM has had nothing but great box office news and is looking likely to crack that fabled billion mark. BvS only had that final total due to its opening week and only that opening week, if it opened to JL numbers then it would have made less then JL so think about that.

            And people were still going for repeated viewings for BvS even after the drop. It's just that they're going in droves for AM. And with JL, it's pretty clear that film didn't satisfy neither party, hardcore DCEU fans and the more cautious ones.

As i said if BvS opened to JL numbers then it would have had a lower final total then JL, BvS only made as much as it did purely because it had a fantastic opening. If people were going back and recommending it then it would be performing like Aquaman, this is my point AM is showing what happens when people actually love the film and recommend it and go back despite reviews not being too keen.

            I didn't say nobody, I'm saying it was insignificant. BvS made 870M because it had a MASSIVE opening, which was purely a result of hype. It had a historic 2nd weekend drop off and didn't double its opening weekend, which for a movie that big, has NEVER happened (and probably never will again).
            So saying that BvS sunk isn't "wrong", it's a fucking fact. Accept it.

            The point is, a 870M total for a 440M WW opening is TERRIBLE. You're right, it didn't sink... It fucking bombed hard. BvS' only achievement is the opening to total gross ratio, which is historically bad. Even terrible films that the GA don't like, still manage to double their openings. BvS didn't. It bombed... again, accept it.

The people who actually analyse these numbers (box office mojo, Forbes, etc) all agree with me on this.

            I never said nobody but the ones what did go back made no fucking difference. Lets say 10 million people watched a random film, would 10'000 of those coming back for a 2nd watch and 1000 of those coming back for 3rd make any noticeable difference to the box office?

            Fact is BvS had poor word of mouth, the majority weren't going back and the majority were not recommending it. BvS opened to over 400m yet never crossed a billion what is the only film to have done so, 900m sounds good sure but looking at it closely shows that actually that wasn't good enough especially when WB were wanting and hoping for more. The damage control WB went on afterwards proves they were worried sick about the DCEU, if 900m was so good or them then SS and JL wouldn't have turned out like they did.

      Aquaman is a family friendly, safe, generic as hell decent entertainment with a bad script but a direction that elevates the movie to watchable spectacle.
      It is sucessfull because it looks and feels like a mcu movie, "fun and colorful" bs included, it is pretty obvious why it is sucessful.
      BvS was not a movie for everybody, and JL was just terrible.

            Ah you see Nolan already done that 3 times over or more if you count his non Batman films and had great critical and box office success along with all his films becoming ingrained in pop culture as well be talked about constantly online and off for years, even now Inception is still discussed and hell even Memento is still widely talked about. End of the day Snyder's BvS was just a bad film full stop with one decent action scene and a good Batman costume.

The Batman Nolan trilogy were mainstream movies, they werent trying to do what Snyder was trying to do with BvS, and what does his non Batman movies even have to do with this subject?     People here are tripping. Aquaman will be lucky to end its theatrical run with 750M (and that's the absolute ceiling). If it crossed 700, I'd consider it a huge achievement and a good sign that maybe not all hope is lost. People just need to set realistic goals for this movie. Yes, it's done very well in China, but it sort of needed to, since it's also the lowest grossing "DCEU" movie in the US so far.

        I actually did like it. I'm just keeping my expectations in check. Another 120 in the US (best case scenario IMO), another 30 in China, the rest of the markets with will give it another, maybe a 50M push?

I check websites like box office mojo, and box office twitter accounts from China, Europe and Latin America. also, I read articles of people who actually do this for a living.             I don't argue with that. But since we are dealing with facts, here's a couple more:
            Aquaman has opened the lowest (by far) of any DCEU film in the US.
            It faces big competition (and Glass is coming out in mid-January).
            Given a 3.0x multiplier, Aquaman isn't expected to make more than 215M in the US.

            In conclusion, the fact that it does well in China doesn't mean it does well in the US which is still the largest market in the world.

            You have a point there. It opened with $72M including previews. BUT... instead of comparing it with other DC films, and their multipliers, you have to compare them with films that opened around the same dates, like Jumanji, for example. Why? simple... let's take WW, a film with an extraordinary x4 multiplier. It opened with $103M, but on the next two days, it made around $25M, while aquaman made around $33M. Is this because AM is better or will make more money? will it have better legs? Probably not, but the fact is we don't know because it's apples and oranges. Jumanji's percentages, on the other hand, look a lot more like Aquaman's, with a low opening, a X-mas boost, and strong legs, because they opened around the same dates. You have to consider a lot more things. But then again, I AM a fan of this crap, and I do this because I want to and because I can find the timne to do it. But I totally understand if no one else does

I actually track every movie from the DCEU a lot. I'm very interested in what makes them do well and what makes them fail. That's not exclusive to Aquaman.

      Of course it would've made a billion if it was actually good. The movie opened huge and then died because word got it that it wasn't good. All of the tracking was pointing to it hitting a billion very quickly due to the worldwide release being on the same day.

            Honestly, I just corrected him politely and told him that a 72M opening this time of year is actually really fucking good (it's top 10 of all time, ffs). He replied by denying it, saying how AM's opening was disappointing and how Venom was "great", despite only grossing 10M more at a less busy time of year, which is an inherently unfair comparison. It's like he just denies everything we say because he can't possibly entertain the possibility that he's wrong.
            I don't mind if I'm wrong, I can easily admit it... look, if AM grosses 1B? I'll happily say I was wrong. What does it matter anyway? A DC movie is doing well, I WANT to be wrong. But Kryptonian Knight seriously has issues... It's childish, honestly.

          Venom's 5 day gross: $98,115,709
          AM's 5 day gross: $105,715,000

            Jumanji opened with $52.7M vs $72.7M, a $20M gap (Jumanji's total domestic run was $404.5M)
            Jumanji dropped 38.7% from Dec 23 to Dec 24, and then got a boost on X-Mas (+111.5%)
            Aquaman dropped 41.9% from 23 to 24, and boost was +101.5%The
            percentages are a little lower for AM, but bear in mind that, by that
            time, Jumanji had made $71.9M vs $105.7 ($33.8M gap), both after 6 days
            of being released. (Jumanji previews started on Wednesday; AM's on
            Thursday). Even if we give Jumanji an "extra day", so both runs end on a
            Tuesday, its total would be $88.9 ($16.8M gap). We also have to consider that, for Jumanji, Christmas Eve fell on Sunday, a high-gossing day per se, while for AM it fell on Sunday, so Jumamji had an edge there

        Based on tracking. And other Christmas releases. At this point 800 is almost guaranteed. 900M is likely. 1 b depends solely on the NA box office and the projections look really good so far. It's projected to only drop 24% in its second weekend and it just had the sixth best christmas day haul ever. If the numbers remain similar. 280-300M domestic is likely. So yes, 1B is still on the plate.

          I agree it's possible... But like you, I'm very interested in tracking these figures, and my own predictions usually turn out to be quite accurate, if I do say so myself. Right now, it's just too soon to make those types of optimistic claims (imo) and I'll reserve judgement until next week when we see how much AM drops (and it won't be much, as the 21-23 to 28-30 December drop is always ridiculously low... but how low, is the question).

          I'm betting on it grossing around 800M (not much higher/ lower). If it holds up nicely, I'll change that to 850M, if not 900M (but those are really good numbers)... 1B? I really don't think so, but we'll see.

    Me and few friends went to see it and we had a absolute blast, we left the theatre very happy. The rest of the DC directors need to follow James and Patti's example.

    On a side note I feel really bad for the movie Mortal Engines and everyone involved, the people that picked the release date should be fired immediately.

    For those who like numbers: Aquaman vs Venom ($270M) in China
    Venom opened with $110.2M vs $94.8M ($15.4M gap)
    after its 3rd weekend, Venom had made $241.3M vs $234.1M ($7.2M gap)
    during its 4th week, Venom "only" made $19.2M; as of this Wednesday, AM has grossed $13M, with still four days to go until the end of the week
    There was no "Christmas boost" for AM, as it actually made a little more on Dec 24 ($5.22M) than on Dec 25 ($5.17). Today it made $2.88M
    Prediction: if the numbers are constant during Thursday and Friday, and raise a little bit ($3.1-3.2M) on Saturday and Sunday, it will make $11.5-12M more, surpassing Venom's cume by $4-5M at that same point in time. With the extended run until February, one can expect a final cume of about $280M

            I found it more "watchable" the second time I saw it... still, when I went to the theater to watch it the first time, I remember how angry I was when I saw The Mandarin was just an old fart (literally!).           I don't think they will waste resources in X-Men solo films. They really don't have that much appeal on their own. Also, who knows how they're going to be received. I mean, MCU spider-man did not make much more than the original 3 films, and just about $100M more than the remakes. There have been 6 X-men films, another that will premiere next year, and 3 Wolverine movies. That's A LOT of X-men. And let's face it: they may be liked (a lot)... but they're not Batman LOL

    Film opened strong in Australia ($4.4M) and New Zealand (1.03)! Now, I know those numbers don't look that great, BUT... Jumanji also opened in Australia on Dec 26, and it made $5.4M in its first TWO days (Tue-Wed), before making $7.2M on its next four days (Thu-Sun). That film made $37M in Australia
    In New Zealand, Jumanji opened at near $700K, and ended its run with 4.8K
