Marvel's Namor Loses His Mind over Aquaman Getting a Movie First

on Marvel's Namor Loses His Mind over Aquaman Getting a Movie First

The tide has turned. Once the butt of many jokes, DC's Aquaman is now the cool aquatic hero (I know, he was always cool). Apparently, the world still needs an oceanic character to make fun of and Marvel's Namor has been selected. Namor (Billy Eichner) isn't very happy about it and expressed his frustration on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

For the record, I've always enjoyed both Aquaman and Namor. They're not the same just because they're both members of underwater civilizations. They can both have their day in the cinematic sun, but this day clearly belongs to Aquaman.

Aquaman Actually has a costume. Namor looks like a weirdo bodybuilder.

Namor actually rarely dresses just in that speedo nowadays.
This is how he appeared in a recent Avengers comic

You know what, when Marvel finally DO make that Fantastic Four movie I hope Namor does show up.

The MCU NEEDS more morally ambiguous characters.

Yeah, but if Marvel makes a Namor movie, the general public would think it's an Aquaman ripoff.

Yeah but that might not matter. They might just get a pass ‘cause they’re Marvel.

Namor is an environmentalist liberal anyway. Disney wouldn't touch that.

The distribution rights for Namor is with Universal like the Hulk, but the situation is also apparently more complicated than that. So, I don't think Marvel could make a Namor movie even if they wanted to.

It’ll be interesting to see if Disney tries to capitalize on the Aquaman wave (PUN) with Namor.

With the Guardians on hiatus, a Marvel underwater world would be just as alien and cool, in my opinion. And they’ve now seen it can be a successful setting.

I actually think Namor shouldn’t get his own movie. I think he’d work better as a foil for the FF. Perhaps just use him like a utility guy like Fury, Barton, & Banner have been.

Ragnarok, IW, & Avengers 4 are supposed to be featuring a Banner arc (instead of an actual stand-alone movie). That’d be better with Namor. Plus, it’ll seem less an Aquaman copy.

Alot of people don't know that Namor flew before superman or any other superhero flew. He is the first and deserves respect for that.

I actually don’t think the general audience cares about the timelines. If they did, John Carter of Mars would’ve done better at the box office.

Would giving him a solo movie gives him that respect? Maybe...then again I don’t think Banner isn’t lacking respect by how the MCU has been using him. I think another solo movie would be lackluster.

John carter and Zorro dont sell as well for the same reason that batman and superman dont sell as well as ironman and spiderman, black panther etc.
People move on to the next greatest thing.
I think you are right. Namor doesn't need a solo film.
Id like to see the fantastic four who represent the 4 elements go up against moleman, namor, and whatever bad guys represent fire and air. Dragonman? Doom? I don't know.

At the rate that Aquaman is dropping now, it will soon join rest of the DCEU in the rotten section. Sad really because it’s better than most of Marvel’s films.

I can't comment on Aquaman itself yet, but from everything I hear, it has the same stylistic beats as Thor Ragnarok. If so, anybody who liked that movie but dislikes Aquaman is a hypocrite.

Poor DC. There's no refuge for it. No matter what he does, there are always assholes saying, "Marvel already did it and did it better." Hamada knows it. That's why he is jumping right into the little dark corners that Marvel has not yet covered, such as an all-female team, or an R-rated villain-centric thriller.

      1. Rick The Model Avatar

That’s a ridiculous fanboy belief. Critics praised the hell out of the Dark Knight trilogy and most recently Wonder Woman. As for films such as Justice League, Suicide Squad, etc., were they wrong for negatively criticizing these silly mumbo jumbos what are considered by some as “films”? Admit it, your fanboyism blinds you from logical points that contradicts your interests. Grow up.

        1. Pikashades Avatar
          Pikashades

Suicide Squad and Josstice League were sabotaged in post-production. Compare the trailers to the final product and you can see it with your own eyes without being a fanboy.

And the Dark Knight Trilogy was last decade. The term 'Modern' means recently now, not 10 years ago.

TDK Rises is six years old. I’m 99.9% sure that even “modern critics” still believe that TDK trilogy was great. I’m also quite sure that most reviewers in 2012 are still very much “modern” in 2018. I already gave Wonder Woman as a perfect example that destroys the fanboy belief that movie critics by default are DC haters. As for the other DC films, pretty much you acknowledged their weak point (even though their faults go beyond post production) so why would you think anyone is just a DC hater because it’s “cool” due to their criticisms of movies that already weren’t good? I’m not a DC hater and I really hoped for the best but I can admit that their movies are generally complete shit with very occasional exceptions.

That's how Namor is pronounced? That's how Submariner is pronounced?

    1. ZaQueerdo Avatar

That's pretty consistently how I've heard it pronounced in the cartoons and video games. Though some people say it as Nuh-more.

You know like Nah-more the submareener instead of Nay-more the submah-riner.

        1. Genos Avatar
          Genos

Words where a syllable ends with a vowel, that vowel tends to be long, so for Na/mor, "Na" is pronounced like "Nay" instead of "Nah" like pa/per or la/ser.

I can understand the submariner part, but Namor's name is technically "Namor the Sub-Mariner" so don't think of it as "submarine" with an "er" at the end, but as the name implies, "sub", and then "mariner" and that's pronounced differently from how "marine" normally sounds.

Oh cool thanks. But what about Thanos? I hear different pronunciations, but the one I hear most commonly (and in the movies) is Thah-nos. Shouldn't the same rule apply?

            Genosreplying to Fares Mhaya

I've actually heard Thanos said multiple ways too. All I can say is English is a weird language that breaks its rules all the time and sometimes it's just a to-may-to/to-mah-to situation.
