on Aquaman Dives into the Domestic Box Office with $9M Opening Night; $13.7M Counting Previews

After hauling in cash all over the world, Aquaman has finally arrived at the domestic box office and in a big way. The film earned $9M on its opening Thursday night. The Warner Bros. and DC Films product easily bested Bumblebee ($2.15M), the other major studio release that opened last night.

Aquaman's Thursday night comes in a little lower than Wonder Woman ($11M) and Justice League ($13M), but remember that many fans got their first viewing in ahead of time. Aquaman made $4.7M via preview screenings on Saturday and Wednesday. That amount won't technically count in the film's opening night/weekend totals, but it's money in the bank for Warner Bros. Aquaman's domestic haul now stands at $13.7M.

This is a great start for Aquaman and keeps it on pace for a three-day opening over $80M and it should pass $100M with ease over the five-day holiday weekend. We could see Aquaman beat those already-ambitious estimates if word-of-mouth is strong enough.

Many families haven't decided which movie they're going to see when they all get together this weekend. They'll choose Aquaman if they're seeing positive reactions in their social feeds from friends who went to see the film right away.

Every passing day proves that biggest problem with dc was Hack Snyder not WB, Movie tone or anything else.If they hired good directors from the start then BvS would have easily made over $1 billion.

Stop it. Aquamans average rating, wherever you look is 6/10. It get some serious hate and Snyder has nothing to do with it. I dont know what it is, maybe some of them really just want to see DC die, but it's time to let go of Snyder.

I never said that it is a great movie. But, It is a good movie. And, That is what i expect from James Wan.Positive word of mouth and a character like Aquaman making this much money on box office shows that. Also, A big part of critics are praising it.For now, DC needs good and with time it will get to the great part like Marvel did.

On the other hand, Hack Snyder dc movies sucked hard.Only MOS was watchable.Hack Snyder only hurt dc while James Wan even with his expected good but not great movie is helping it.

I can't understand the hate. So mad at a director. So much hate to call him a hack lol It wasn't your cup of tea. Didn't stick to your favorite comic book. Didn't sell enough? must be hard sleeping at night. The tone for bvs is one of the reasons I love it so much. It's not perfect. But it's different than the other DC movies we've got. Honestly why would I care if bvs didn't make 1b? Or if it did. I enjoyed it enough to say that's the best batman I've seen on the big screen.
You got James Wan directing aquaman and people still hate. Too cheesy, simple story etc at the end of the day the family enjoyed the movie enough to talk about how awesome it was.

Truthfully, We should praise wb for still investing big in DC after disappointments like BvS, MOS and failure like JL.But, Some ungrateful cultist wants to blame wb for everything.

Just tell me what reason wb had to spend millions on re-shoots, Hiring director and a new composer if Hack Snyder did the impossible and finally directed a good movie?....Also. Why is it a bad director like Hack Snyder who always gets his movies ruined by WB?......You don't see it happening to other good directors with good track record.

It's funny JK, no one talked about Zack Snyder before you did. You seem to be more obsessed with him than the so called Snyder cultist you don't like.

You need to chill and take your Snyder-obsession somewhere else where it's appreciated.

You may call them disappointments, but DCEu is still WB’s most valuable brand, it is just not as valuable as MCU ( yet).

        J.K.2019

BvS after everything with three years spend, Hundreds of million spend on marketing, Bringing three biggest dc characters in one movie for first time was only able to make a profit of $100 million. This profit is after dvd sales, Merchandise sales, TV rights sales etc. while it failed hard at box office and wasn't able to earn it's investment back.

JL even had a bigger production budget and probably the same marketing budget and it was a total flop.

You people need to differentiate between revenue and profit.WW was a success, SS was a success.Studios only get 1/2nd at domestic,1/3rd at international box office,1/4th at Chinese box office revenue earned. BvS, MOS were disappointment and JL was a total flop.

Dceu could be and should be WBs most valuable brand, but it's not even close tbh. WB made as much profit with IT (the movie) than all of the dceu movies combined.

    1. mabruno Avatar
      mabruno

Mary Poppins was a classic when Julie Andrews played it, but the world has changed and I am not sure modern audiences can connect with it.

      1. drisraelluna Avatar
        drisraelluna

I've read that it is pretty much THE SAME as the original movie... nothing new. Probably why it's underperforming. If aquaman beats Spiderverse, Bumblebee, AND Mary Poppins, it has to be the biggest win for WB EVER!

        1. mabruno Avatar
          mabruno

Besides, Emily Blunt is no Julie Andrews. If the story is roughly the same, why settle for a poor imitation when you can have the original ? A bolder move would have been to make a Mary Poppins movie taking place in the present with contemporary children and present-day issues., but that would have been quite a creative challenge !

          ItzSilentStorm

just sucks that, at the rate its going, it seems like we could very well end up with yet ANOTHER critically rotten DC movie. Why do you think its not working for a lot of them?

          1. Thanasis Avatar
            Thanasisreplying to ItzSilentStorm

Honestly, not sure. It could be a combination of multiple things. Including personal biases and lack of interest in the brand. The thing is, I genuinely feel like this movie doesn't deserve it. When a movie like Ant man 2 gets an 88 ( a movie that's pretty fucking shit), I get confused when I see a lot of these reviews.

      2. Thanasis Avatar
        Thanasis

Also, the critics don't think it's trash. It has 6/10 they think it's meh. But it's still above average.

        1. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
          Kerk Lastnameless

          6/10 is a D. That's not a good grade.

            Thanasisreplying to Kerk Lastnameless

Where is this a thing? America? 5/10 is mathematically the average. Anything above that is above average. Anything below is below average. That's how numbers work.

            Kerk Lastnamelessreplying to Thanasis

Any country with good education. Like my country. Also, you said it yourself - average. Average is not good.

          3. Thanasis Avatar
            Thanasisreplying to Kerk Lastnameless

Right. I said that they just think it's meh. Which is average. But they don't think it's trash like he stated. Why would the grade scale in education transfer to grading of any sort of artistic medium?

          4. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
            Kerk Lastnamelessreplying to Thanasis

I don't see why it shouldn't when it comes to rating the said medium. It's important for the image of the brand. Even if the critics are biased and all up Disney's ass, that rot will leave a mark, and I fear, and unwashable one.

Then again, maybe the public opinion will overpower the critics. It has happened before.

          5. Thanasis Avatar
            Thanasisreplying to Kerk Lastnameless

I'm almost 100% certain the movie will be fine. It's projected to open with 80 million dollars which is insane considering competition and the fact that it was originally projected to open at around 50 million. I don't think 7/10 good way to grade film. I don't think it makes sense. The reason it works is because with education you have tangible ways of scoring someone's effort and output. Whereas any art doesn't go through an exam. It's graded based on preference.

          6. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
            Kerk Lastnamelessreplying to Thanasis

Having seen it just now, I too think it will be fine.
