Christina Hodson has quickly become one of the most in-demand writers in Hollywood. She wrote Bumblebee, in theaters this month, and Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), which starts production soon. Now, Hodson is writing Batgirl and really enjoying the experience.
Warner Bros., usually known for being a filmmaker-driven studio, has been accused of tampering too much with DC movies in recent years. That has not been the case for Hodson on Batgirl. "I do feel very free doing that one, and the studio is being super supportive, in letting me dream up whatever I want to dream up," she told Collider.
It is a little easier for a studio to back off at this stage. Commitments are not being made to whatever Hodson dreams up just yet, but still, this is an encouraging sign. Warner Bros. may very well be getting back to basics and sticking with what has served the studio so well in the past (and present outside of DC).
DC Films has been under new leadership with Walter Hamada stepping in about a year ago. Based on what we have seen and heard about the current slate of DC projects, Hamada and his team appear to be supporting storytellers and letting them bring their own vision to the projects of which they're in charge.
In Hodson's case, giving her the freedom to find the right story for Batgirl is clearly the best movie. Critics are responding positively to Bumblebee and Warner Bros. must be in favor of Hodson's Birds of Prey script considering that the studio was immediately willing to hire her for another DC movie.
