on Aquaman Outgrosses Every DC Movie Ever Released in China, in Just 4 Days

China has a new favorite DC superhero. Aquaman is now the highest-grossing DC movie ever released in the Middle Kingdom. In just four days, the James Wan film has earned $107.65M, more than the lifetime total of previous DC record-holder Justice League ($106M).

This is just the latest record for Aquaman in the world's second-largest movie market. The movie already had the best opening day and opening weekend in the history of Warner Bros.

Aquaman will continue to work its way up the superhero movie charts in China for weeks to come. It should easily finish near the top of that list, according to China box office pundit Gavin Feng. It could wind up being one of only a handful of superhero movies to top $200M in China.

Warner Bros. is sure to be ecstatic right now. If other territories, including North America, embrace the film anywhere near this level, Aquaman could be the first DC movie to reach $1 billion worldwide since The Dark Knight Rises.

      Wonder Woman probably broke the curse first. At least in terns of how well it was received by critics and audiences alike. Hopefully Aquaman will continue that trend. Regardless it's a good start. :)

        In many ways, both WW and Aquaman broke the curse in their own right and It's all thanks to WB 'not' interferring with production process and letting things go organically, unlike what they did with JL; this new rule should follow for every future DCEU film from now on.

        I can't believe we still listen to critics (but yes, we do). For instance, no matter how bad Captain Marvel is...it will get great reviews if they shove her on us as the most powerful hero. Critics don't rate on entertainment value..

          I see the problem, you can't read. I didn't include JL in that list, on purpose. 4/5 is still a great record (soon 5/6).

          As for Warner, they ordered BvS then JL after MoS. More DCEU movies are coming. Maybe one day you will understand why Warner are making ever more films in this franchise (Hint: it isn't because the DCEU is "cursed").

          You trolls must be amazed that a "cursed" franchise now include 6 films, and at least 4 more are on the way. How many dozens of DCEU movies must Warner produce before your delusions stop?

            You just need to accept MoS and BvS under-performed, hey look its not my fault you don't understand movie budgets and box office returns. Tell me though mastermind why did WB meddle with SS after BvS under-performed? Why did they butcher JL? If MoS and BvS were these great successes surely WB wouldn't want to mess with what must clearly work.

            Look WB won't quit with the "DCEU" because they are too far into it and despite MoS, BvS and JL they have SS doing really well box office wise and WW over-performing. The names of the characters are enough to keep going because if and when Reeves gives us The Batman the failure of BvS and Batfleck won't matter because its still a Batman film and people will watch especially with i assume Batfleck gone.

            Also asshole learn what a troll is because i don't think you know what it means. Oh by the way if you're going to throw around the troll maybe not act like one yourself, i've been noticing a few times where i've countered everything you said that you give up and never reply what makes me think you're a coward and can't accept it when you're wrong.

          It might not reach that mark, but of course an Aquaman movie doesn't need to reach $1 billion to be a huge success. Before the DCEU he was unfairly considered a joke for the general audience (or unknown).

          As long as Aquaman doesn't flop in the US (below $150 million), a sequel is almost already sure to happen.

            Aquaman is looking to make at least $250m in China so 600 is almost impossible, it would require something like this:
            - 150 in the US+Canada
            - 200 in the rest of the world

            For only 350 total outside China. That is not going to happen, it will make a lot more (Suicide Squad made $746 million without China).

      I honestly dont think people were ever turned of the characters or the DCEU itself but rather some of the creative decisions and directions some of the films chose to go. Yet this shows, people will turn up to support DC, no matter the character, if the film is good and well made. WB should take note.

        There was a lot of talk about it when Justice League underperformed, so it's just good to see that remnants of the "old" DCEU are still popular. I just hope this gets WB reinterested in Cavill/Affleck

            Tbh I would like to see Cavill in an Aquaman type funner brighter tone. I think that would be a really fun Superman movie. Keep the big budget fighting and what not, like him fighting Brainiac through space would be crazy. But keep it fun, bright and lighthearted as well. Affleck, well good riddance to him. He blew it.

            I would love to see Cavill as Superman again. I truly hope we get another movie from him or at least him be in something. Like you said a fun Superman movie is what we need. As much I loved Man of Steels Superman, I wanna see more of the JL Superman. But better obviously. And Affleck I think still deserves another chance. The snyder/Whedon mixing didn't do him any justice.

    This is a great achievement for a character that has been a pop culture laughing stock for most of his existence. Hats of to Jason and James for delivering a good movie, that made the character cool. Can't wait to see it. Hopefully this success, gives WB the confidence to reforge the DCEU.

    Hate to say it, but it was Snyder all along. It seems all of the non-Snyder movies have been a home run, outside of Suicide Squad from a critical point of view. If they are doing this good with Aquaman, makes me wonder what a Snyderless movie about Superman and Batman could have been.....anyways, looking forward to the future....and it looks bright for the DCEU ;)).

      lmaooo Snyder is just as much responsible for the success of Aquaman and Wonder Woman ...people always hate on MOS but it did a good job of setting up a cinematic universe if you ask me. There was the empty pod in the ship alluding to Supergirl , there was the Wayne satellite and Lex Luthor truck , and I always believed Aquaman or Atlantians were responsible for that oil rig getting sabotage let's not forgot the whales.i believe MOS made more then Ironman 1 also but I'm not sure.

They gave him a show but then too afraid to make him Superman. It wasn’t till Marvel that they finally had the balls to try it again. All crossovers that failed and Marvel had to show them the way.             It was a spin-off because it derived from the Reeve films. Marvel movies didn't derive from one another, except for Black Panther and Spider-Man: Homecoming, which derived from Civil War.

Ergo, there is NOT a DCEU (even the term was fan-created), and thus DC isn't copying Marvel

            They are copying them in the sense that they're creating a shared universe of several superheros, which is something they never did before.

            It's not an exact copy because DC did it backwards: most solo films came after team-up films. But it's still an attempt to replicate what Marvel has.

            But they DID it before! Or at least, they TRIED to do it, with the superman/supergirl films. It just didn't work as they intended to, and the idea was scrapped. Spin-offs, sequels, etc. It really DOESN'T matter what word you use to define those films... the end result will be a single world, a single canon, filled with different characters. Some will share the same "family" (i.e. the Batman family or Superman family), and others will not.

            And again, Marvel attempted to replicate something that had already been done. It used comic book characters instead of monsters, but is the same thing. We're just making circles around the same arguments, my friend. The fact is, neither WB/DC nor Disney/Marvel created ORIGINAL concepts... even the superhero genre was copied from someone else

            So, they take the hot dog with ketchup and are trying to make it better, why is that "wrong"? And why was not putting ketchup into it "wrong" as well?             Again, I just don't get why you "attack" (I'm just using the word for lack of a better one, English is not my native language, sorry) DC for "copying" marvel (which I think I established that they may be two different concepts), but you seem to be ok with marvel "imitating" another artist (Universal), and keep making things look like the "hot dog with ketchup" is an original concept. It is an "improvement", if you like, and that is only if you like ketchup more... others may not like it

            I think we can summarize events this way:
            1. Universal created the "shared universe" concept
            2. Columbia created the "superhero live-action" concept
            3. WB/DC took the superhero live-action concept and used to "create" the superhero movie gender
            4. WB/DC made the first attempt to a "superhero shared universe" with not so good results
            5. Marvel copied the superhero movie gender, sold properties and some very BAD films were made
            6. Disney/Marvel took the "shared universe" concept, plus the "superhero movie" concept used before and made another, quite more successful attempt at a "superhero shared universe"
            7. WB/DC saw Disney/Marvel's success and tried to make the same thing, and is struggling with it

            In the end, BOTH studios took something that was already used, one way or another, and tried to spice things up their own way. None of them are "original" in the literal meaning of the word, which would be to create something entirely new and never seen before. Cheers!

      To be fair, Bumblebee only has 25 reviews so far, and is down to 96%. It'll bottom out in the 80's. And let's not forget, the average rating for Bumblebee is in the 7 out of 10 star range (Rottentomatoes only aggregates positive vs negative for their percentage). Spiderverse on the other hand has an average of 9 with 95 reviews, and is already nominated for an oscar, so i think it might actually be that good! Some reviews are saying spiderverse is the best spiderman ever made.

          Its the best and most comic accurate Spider-Man film filled with plenty of heart and emotion and has some pretty good themes running through it, considering its a animated film for "kids" its pretty grown up at times and goes to places you never thought a film like it would go too. Also helps it has some amazing action scenes, filled to the brim with references and Easter Eggs, has a fantastic cast and can be pretty damn funny. As someone who loves Spider-Man this is the dream film.

            How can I not enjoy a movie that's been called "the best Marvel movie DC has made"?

            Yeah Aquabro sucks, but there's more to a film than the lead actor. I'm loving the visuals, the action, Black Manta, Ocean Master, etc. I think it's a lot harder for you to enjoy a film that's fun, light, colorful and has cheesy jokes, than for me.

            So many times calling MCU films trash because of their tone and now Aquaman has the same tone, lol.

The movie has been compared to Avatar and Star Wars, far more impressive visually than anything Disney ever produced. Just because you are a drooling Disney fanboy who only watches MCU movies and nothing else, it doesn't mean that Disney invented jokes (but Warner/DC invented the superhero blockbuster genre, never forget that). Also, Warner gives creative freedom to their directors. The directors choose the tone - not a toy corporation.

            I understand that you repeat MCU and "soft reboot" as a defense mechanism, because you were rooting for this movie to fail - praying and begging on Internet for a blonde Aquaman. Remember all the racist memes you posted? Instead, its success will make sure that no reboot is coming.

    I see a lot of people arguing about who copied who... here are some thoughts
    -The "shared universe" concept was not created either by WB or Mavel/Disney, but by Universal
    -The superhero live-action genre was not created by WB or Marvel/Disney, but by Columbia, with their Mandrake series back in 1939, followed by characters such as Batman or Captain America
    -The first superhero blockbuster film was indeed created by DC, with superman
    -The "shared superhero universe" involving different characters living within the same canon, was again used first by DC, with Supergirl

    Now, people would say it is a spin-off, but the concept of a shared universe was there. Also, if we're going to use the real meaning of the term "spin-off", as it turns out, DCEU is NOT a shered universe, but a series of spin-offs, as BvS is a direct sequel of MoS, where Batman acts as an antagonist of sorts and WW is just a secondary character. Origin movies like WW and Aquaman (an origin movie of sorts) are just spin-offs of BvS, as they're just expanding on details and aspects of characters already presented previously, just like Solo is a spin-off of Star Wars... and since ALL JL members have minor cameos in BvS, and because of the ending of said film JL can be considered A DIRECT SEQUEL of MoS, and all future solo films of the characters presented there may be considered spin-offs as well. SS acts a a different plot, with just references to the original franchise, and can ALSO be considered as spin-off, just the same way Rogue One is as spin-off of SW. So, in the end, DC is not copying Marvel, since it's "shared universe" was created in a totally different way

    In the end, I don't think it matters who did what first... what matters is what is being done right
