on Amy Adams Thinks She's out of the DC Universe Now

Amy Adams is nothing if not polite. She welcomed Nicole Kidman, who's in Aquaman this month, to the DC Universe. As Kidman enters the DC Universe, however, Adams believes she's making (or has already made) her exit.

"I think I'm out of the DC Universe now," Adams told Kidman in a segment of Variety's Actors on Actors. "I think they're revamping that. I don't know the details."

Adams comments are simultaneously surprising and unsurprising. With reports that Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman for Warner Bros., it's easy enough to understand why Adams would not be back as Lois Lane. Even so, it's a bit of a shock to hear it out loud.

Amy Adams was a terrific Lois Lane. She turned in an outstanding performance in Man of Steel. She was, however, misused in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, where spent most of her time discovering information the audience already knew, and underutilized in Justice League.

Missed opportunities or not, Warner Bros. is ready to move on. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, a new Batman, and maybe even The Joker will lead the way now. Amy Adams' Lois Lane appears to be an unfortunate casualty of the DCEU's struggles.

      You must be a Snyder sheep. Because WB has every right to try to fix what he ruined..he made three films and all 3 failed with majority critics, majority of the fans and all underwhelmed at the box office or barely broke even. So if WB has to recast or erase certain characters so be it. DC characters are bigger than any actor or actress

        MoS wasn't considered a failure, it just under performed to what WB had hoped. But it was strong enough for WB to decide and move forward with Cavil's Superman.

            You're obliviously broken if you don't understand the difference. Here's a good example at a soft reboot, Doctor Who every time a new Doctor happens, typically its a fresh start what provides a nice jumping on point. A full on reboot is when everything is new with any connection to the previous version being throw out, think Nolan's Batman to DCEU Batman.

        None of those films featuring the characters outright rebooted or contradicted things happening in the previous films (The first Avengers movie even references the events of The Incredible Hulk and has some footage from it).

        That's likely not gonna be the case for some of these movies go forward. If we get a new Superman, expect it to be disconnected from Man of Steel and BVS.

          I wish they had used 'Hulk'. Yeah the movie had problems but having Banner Hulking out because of his emotions was better then if his heart rate goes up too much.

          I have a feeling that its all an act. What better way to tease the fans on by having an actor reveal some of the 'secrets'. Then have the studio get all 'mad' at him.

        I can never get a read on you, dude. I haven't been able to grasp if you're for/against the DCEU and the Snyderverse? I know you're fond of Batfleck (obviously) but judging from your posts, you're not a fan of the films?

        Are you one of the level-headed fans who just want these films to be *good* and do justice to their source material?

          I like a lot of what Snyder brought to the table. Man of Steel is easily the best Superman movie imo, even if it it’s a flawed film... it worked as a film overall. It was also very refreshing after the extremely disappointing Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises where Nolan butchered the Batman comics twice in a row.

          BvS did not work as well as Man of Steel. I liked a lot of what it offered. Really dug Ben Affleck as Batman and thought he gave a great performance. He’s my favourite live action Batman so far.... but then again, he doesn’t really have much competition as I don’t really feel anyone did that great of a job prior to him. That said, I did like him in the role quite a bit.

          But everything else in BvS was poorly executed.... besides Wonder Woman who I thought was badass even though it probably would’ve been even better had they just waited.

          I’m in the camp that believes maybe they should’ve just given us a proper Superman sequel before introducing Batman to flesh out the characters introduced in Man of Steel a little better before going balls to the wall.

          Because there was so much focus on introducing Batman in BvS I feel the story was a bit forced, and all the Superman characters were less engaging because less attention was perhaps given to fleshing them out further in a way that stayed true to what made them interesting in Man of Steel.

          For example, I really did not enjoy the way Henry Cavill’s Superman was presented the second time around. I found him a. little too broody the second time around, and he also didn’t really have any cool character moments as he did in the first film. He kind of became a lot less interesting.

          I also didn’t like the way Snyder presented him visually making him look so dark and cold blooded. Colours of his costume were muted and he just looked so pale in his dark costume he was supposed to be opposite to
          Batman that’s part of the point of Batman v Superman dynamic.

          So BvS taught me that while Snyder can be successful leading the charge of the DC Universe he can also misfire and is quite inconsistent... and when he does make a good movie (MoS) even the good films often have large flaws.

          But BvS was his true failure. He missed the point of the dynamic between Batman/Superman, he completely miscast Lex Luthor even tho he was somewhat on the right track for the way the character is written... he just didn’t quite get enough right in BvS and overall I see that film as pretty mediocre.

          Some things he did right, many things he did wrong. Supermans relationships with his mother and Lois were pushed aside and far less interesting than in Man of Steel. The whole Doomsday thing was shoehorned in and visually looked completely wrong, Supermans greatest villain never reached the full potential that he should have due to an awkward casting and writing that didn’t do the character full justice. How was I supposed to be happy about Lex Luthor being pretty much wasted in the DCEU? He was a complete maniac by the end of BvS heading to Arkham Asylum like some Joker wannabe. Snyder just proved he doesn’t have a good enough grasp on characters or that he only takes it upon himself to get the characters right... half of the time which just isn’t good enough. The Lex Luthor that is jealous of Superman is an extremely interesting take on the character and it wasn’t given enough attention in BvS. They only scratched the surface of that Lex Luthor in BvS.

          Casting a great Batman was not enough to make me overlook all the flaws. This is before I even get into the overall editing, pacing and awkward narrative issues i had with BvS.

          Ben Affleck’s Batman was enough to allow me to enjoy myself watching the film and somewhat I guess redeemed my film viewing experience so I was still all for the universe continuing and heading for a course correction. Which they attempted with JL, and that film was just about as safe and bland as a film can get which was not exactly the way I would have “corrected” things. Obviously not all the blame can be put on Snyder for that one as they clearly hijacked his film and had Joss Whedon see it to its end.

          Justice League somewhat fixed the portrayal of Superman but he had such a small role in the film it really wasn’t that great of a wrap up for Cavill’s Superman but it left me excited for his future seeing that they had seemingly figured out how to properly portray the character

          But the rest of the film was just a giant meh. Completely safe, predictable and just meh.

          Affleck was still decent they didn’t destroy his Batman as some people act like he was so night and day from BvS. I felt it was still a strong and consistent performance with what we got before... but Batman didn’t really have any great moments that were that memorable.

          So i’m left ina. position where i’m still wanting a continuation of Cavill and affleck Batman and Superman but under a director that understands how to make great films and with a writer that writes great characters. I see the potential.

          So i’m not a DCEU hater that wants a complete reboot. Just as you said, i’m a level headed fan that can call out the good and the bad.... and that just wishes we could take what we already have established and fix it all up so that there is more good than bad going forward

          Man of Steel was a good start as far as I’m concerned and then things kinda jjst got derailed in the sequels that followed.

          Interestingly enough, that’s kind of how I felt about The Dark knight trilogy being that I enjoyed Batman Begins quite a bit but felt Nolan changed too
          much in the sequels and things fell apart

          Knowing WB they never take the time to understand where they went wrong. So rather than realizing that they just need to give their Batman and Superman a better director... they’re just gonna reboot Batman and Superman and try to shoehorn them into the DCEU making things even more convoluted.

          Because rather than blaming the filmmaking error that derailed the DCEU, they just look at on the surface and say “ well Cavill and Affleck are theproblem let’s just start over. Cavill and Affleck were not the problem... they’re both perfect for the roles!! they need a better filmmaker at the helm

          It’s such an awkward position for WB to put themselves in. And normally, when they reboot, they do something radically different and it’s not always change for the better.

          For example, I believe the rumours that they’re going to go for a black Superman just with how diversity is so popular now.

          Terrible idea..: but I honestly won’t be surprised. WB is going to screw things up even worse than they already have by ruining Batman and Superman mark

          especially after James Wan appears to have gotten things back on track with aquaman.

          Just wait... you’ll see how much of a mess this is gonna be.

            If you like hollow, unrelatable, versions of Superman that feel completely one dimensional then the Donner Superman is for you.

            For those of us that like the comics where Clark Kent is an actual character with flaws, and realism then Man of Steel Superman is the best so far.

            Plus Cavill has that perfect square jawed Superman look. Unlike Reeve, who has the smile of a pedophile

            Cavill was just very assertive in MoS which was perfect.

            BvS was the film where he was scowling at everyone.

            There was warmth to him in MoS

            Justice League, for as little a role he had, he portrayed superman as an even warmer character.

            The end credits scene with flash was live action Superman perfection.

            Yup, blame the critics. Blame everything but the movie. Have you heard of this recent 'Venom' film? It got the same bad RT score (28%) as BvS. It must have performed the same way, right?

            BvS: $422M w/w opening, $873 w/w gross (2.1x)
            Venom: $207M opening, $845M gross so far (4.1x)

            What's the difference? People like Venom. Bad reviews aren't keeping them away. Bad reviews didn't keep people away from BvS, either. BvS kept people away from BvS.

            Bullshit. Bad reviews kept People away from bvs. It was only later that people realized that they were full of shit, hence why venom got the advantage. And there are actual scores that prove that audiences liked bvs.

            Yes, not until 2016 had audiences and critics ever disagreed on a movie. Until BvS, moviegoers looked to critics to tell them what to see. That's why there used to be a perfect correlation between the year's highest grossing films and the year's best reviewed films. The Transformers franchise made billions because of this relationship!

            But then BvS came out and everything changed. Suddenly, average moviegoers became suspicious of those so-called critics. "All those years we trusted you completely, you were lying to us!" There was now a divergence between critics and audiences. No more indie dramas dominating the box office every weekend! People started seeing CGI-heavy action movies, critics be damned.

            Film historians called this turning point "the BvS debacle." The industry was never the same.

            You could literally make a movie about Superman taking a dump in Wayne manor, and it would have brought over $700M. People were hyped for this film, and if we learned anything about BvS, other than it was outright abomination, is that it was also frontloaded AF.

            The ultimate edition was MUCH stronger but regards to the characters the film was still flawed.

            Lex Luthor was hands down the WORST. Luthor is not Zuckerberg. This version of the character has no charisma, no charm, no genius I could perceive, and worst of all, no good reason at all to hate Superman. In the comics Luthor was always envious of Superman for his role as the Man of Tomorrow instead of himself. But in this universe, Superman is already hated and feared by many. So what's Luthor's problem?

            Add to that the fact that Luthor so easily played BW/Batman, perfectly tricking him into hating and blaming Superman. The worlds greatest detective is not so easily fooled, esp not by Luther. Which means once again we got a Batman who is a rich ninja but doesn't display any form of real intelligence or detective skills. He simply mows people down with his car and calls it a day. And thats a shame because otherwise I loved Affleck's performance.

            Then lets take the heart of the movie, the fight between Batman and Superman. It was SO rushed and not thought out. Batman is about to literally kill (again) Superman until he hears his mother's name and suddenly they are best friends? I mean there was no real conflict resolution in there whatsoever because there never really even was a conflict.

            I will say Wonder Woman was brilliant and spot on. But that whole line about leaving Man's World for 100 years put Patty Jenkins in a tough spot, forcing her to break DCEU canon with WW 1984.

            Yeah no. Lex luthor was nowhere near the worst. This lex luthor was nothing like Zuckerberg. Saying he had no charm or charisma is ridiculous when he clearly demonstrated it in his very first introduction and in the party scene. Saying he had no genius is ridiculous considering how meticulous his plan was and how he fooled batman and superman saying he had no good reason to Hate superman is ridiculous considering that you have three scenes where he clearly states why he hates superman. In the comics, luthor had different reasons to hate superman. Not just that one. Depending on the incarnation. And this superman was also loved by many.

            Luthor has played batman before many times in the comics. It's not uncommon. He didn't trick him into hating superman batman already hated superman. All he did was give him more reason to push him to wards the edge. And batman was fooled by so many other villains. That doesn't mean he lacks intelligence or detective skills. Same goes for the batman in the movie. So no he doesn't just now people down and calls it a day and we see him do actual detective work.

            No, the fight wasn't rushed. It was set up throughout the movie. So it was clearly Thought out. Batman was about to murder not kill. There is a difference. He would have been pushed over the edge. And no it wasn't just his mother's name. It was the fact that supermans last words were Martha which mirrored Thomas Waynes last words which took batman back to that night and created a deja vu which made him angry and no they didn't become best friends. They became temporary allies. He realized that he was wrong about superman and that he wasn't his enemy. They didn't become friends.

            Not really it didn't. It left it open to interpretation. That line could mean she didn't expose herself to the world as a superhero and just fought crime from the shadows.

And if superman survives, lex could have killed him with kryptonite or with doomsday. Add to the fact that he removed all evidence Linking him to the plan by killing the witnesses and leaving no trace and no reason to suspect him that is genius and makes sense and shows how he fooled batman and superman.

            No you don't. That doesn't reduce him to an average Joe . There are versions of lex in the comics that have that same reason. And it wasn't about fearing him. If was about proving him to be a false God.

            But the real problem with this movie (and the universe in general), is that no one was ever interested in seeing these depictions of their beloved characters. Literally, nobody had EVER asked for this "dark" (bad) universe.
            When you make a movie about Wonder Woman abandoning humankind, a murderous, beyond stupid, Batman, and a brooding, wooden Superman, then you clearly don't know your audience. And WB, in its stupidity, had allowed him to go through with it for the sake of being different than Marvel.

          To me, when you have actors that feel like they are the actual real life heroes... especially ones as iconic as Batman and Superman... you just don’t get rid of them or recast them. You give them
          better material to work with

          Finding an actor like Cavill that looks and sounds exactly like Superman is never gonna happen again. Whoever they recast is automatically going to pale in comparison.

          I’ll be incredibly surprised if he ends up being as good a choice... whoever it is.

      Snyder destroyed the shared Universe and certain actors are now collateral damage. And I don't blame WB. They spent almost a billion dollars between promotion and production for his three films and they all underwhelmed at the box office and all three were bashed by majority of the fans and almost every critic. So who gives a shit. I don't care that Henry was right up there with Christopher Reeves and I don't care that Ben Affleck was an amazing Batman and I don't care that Amy Adams was a pretty solid Lois Lane. The DC characters are bigger than any actor or actress. They're not MCU characters that need Robert Downey jr. Or Chris Evans to be successful

            As someone who has no dog in this fight I find both sides really annoying. One side cries at how amazing Snyder is while the other side screams at how horrible he was.

            Apparently no one here can talk about this in a nuanced way. In my opinion he overall had some hits and misses and we can have a great discussion about what those were but he wasn't the film director equivalent of Gandhi or Hitler like some suggest.

            But that's the problem here. People who like Snyder's work aren't in the minority anymore that people who hate his work are in the majority. As far as we can see the fanbase has been split in half (That seems to be more so for BVS than MOS, although some have decided to throw MOS under the bus to fuel their snyder hate). The audience is somewhat split in half (for BVS not MOS and even then we'll never know what the audience feedback was for the ultimate edition cause rotten tomato doesn't review special editions for some reason), heck even movie reviewers can't fully agree whether or not they hate or like his work (although, when the BVS ultimate edition came out more reviewers seemed to like it than hate it).

            The only Snyder DC movie that we can actually say has been hated by the majority of people is JL, which alienated both Snyder fans and haters alike.

            Anyways, maybe WB will be able to make something both sides can like.

            @tobyoyenuga:disqus I would argue that, while majority received it well (me included), MoS caused a tremor that created cracks in the ground, but BvS was what absolutely tore the ground apart. Some people hailed the deconstruction and hopelessness, others despised it and the compromise of character qualities (Batman killing and making decisions based purely on emotion rather than logic/reason, Superman abandoning the people injured in an explosion/not wanting to be Superman). I would say that it definitely is skewed towards the latter. And that has grown and grown.

            What doesn't help is Snyder's behavior. He has frequently acted pompous in interviews and on Vero ("If you know the comics ..." | "In the Nolan films he killed... I look at it as killing by proxy ..."). Furthermore, the behavior of Snyder fans is atrocious. It's cult-like, claiming its a masterpiece and sending death threats to reviewers and critics, accusing Rotten Tomatoes of being paid by Disney when WB has a 30% stockholding in RT (AND it's not even a reviewer itself, its an aggregate). Yes, the Snyder hate is over-the-top, but it's like any kind of online rage; it will *always* be there.

            In the end, what really broke the fanbase is the treatment of these characters we love and adore. Patty treated Diana with love and respect, which then resulted in a beautiful and well received story. Snyder wanted to create Watchman 2.0 with The Dark Knight Returns thrown in. That's why Marvel is so successful - Kevin Feige loves these characters and he will not let any director do anything to compromise their qualities.

            TL;DR - Those who blame Snyder and dislike the Snyder verse are most *definitely* in the majority, and BvS is the result of that. People didn't even go to see JL, as judged by the horrendous box office flop.

            I'll agree with your first paragraph, but I disagree with the rest for the most part. I think I had this conversation with Hunter Zolomon once.

            As you said online rage will always be there, but not all online rage is created equal. Let's use batmannews as an example. When the BVS UC came out the comment section was filed with as many Snyder apologists as Snyder detractors, the difference was that the majority of Snyder Detractors resorted to insults first explanations later unlike the majority of the Snyder apologists who literally had to use years worth of comic book knowledge to back up what they thought was a good movie. I remember it clearly because at the time I was one of them. Still am in some regard.

            Unfortunately as the months went by, the calm snyder defenders either started leaving less, or started employing the same trollish tactics that snyder hating trolls used (this isn't to put all snyder detractors under the same umbrella as snyder trolls , for example I'll argue with hunter zolomon about BVS till tomorrow, but I can still have a conversation with him, Reverse Flash on the other hand...) Of course much like the IGN comment section, the batmannews comment section has become so toxic that most Snyder fans don't even comment here anymore. People like Rust and Rorschach are nowhere to be found. As Schuyler Finley so aptly said, "the comments have become such a war zone that it's driven a lot of people away". This has been a recurring pattern with a lot of comment sections, and internet communities. To your point about Justice League, that movie was, as i said before not liked by both the snyder fans and detractors, so of course it bombed.

            Lastly the point about Zack not respecting the characters is one that I disagree with. That point always seems to be based on subjective opinion, not fact. You may not like the direction zack snyder took the characters in, but clearly there is a comic book basis for a lot of his decisions. Considering he co-wrote the Wonder Woman movie, I'd say he showed just as much respect for the character as Patty did.

            Wrong. JL was actually better received by audience and critics alike. The hate for bvs is far greater than JL. The same people who loved BvS are the same people who hates JL, which is the minority.

So what are you on about myzterius? I'll agree with you that justice league had a better audience score than BVS, but judging the amount of people who watched it compared to the first two, it's kind of a pointless argument.

            WW did deviate. It was clear that in the end she was still active and will continue being a hero(not from the shadows) in the sequel. So that "i abandoned humanity 100 years ago" was completely ignored.

            Yes of course, if it were good. 40% is an improvement from 27%, and a audience score of 74% is better than a 63%, which is an improvement nonetheless.

            BvS and SS squad had worse reviews, yet bvs still opened with 166m and SS with 133, google was available for all of these movies as well. Bad reviews doesnt mean people wont show up, unless its predecessor(bvs) was not good, so they didnt bother with the sequel that had bad reviews with the same director on top of that. JL had pretty decent legs, so word of mouth was actually good. It had a better multiplier than BvS and better legs.

            You can't back any of that up. BvS is regarded as a bad movie and it put off so many people they never bothered watching the sequel. MoS a film i love is regarded as really diverse. Watchmen is only really liked by certain people with the film not connecting to the Majority. Sucker Punch and his Owl film are also regarded as bad films and not liked. Really his only films what are actually regarded as good are 300 and the Dawn remake.

            Yeah UC of BvS is better but that's like saying a golden shit is better then a normal shit. Anyway you have proved my point in that you can't accept a film you love isn't loved by everyone, this is why the Snyder fanbase is usually thought off as a shitty cult and a joke.

            Secondly, what metric are you using to measure your claim that the majority of people didn't like BVS, rotten tomatoes critic reviews(4.9 with a review count of 394) or audience reviews (with a 63% and a review count of 231,937?)? Or are you using the batmannews comment section where most of the people who liked the movie left because of the constant insults and snide comment? Also, golden shit? According to who? You and your friends on batmannews? That's an opinion not fact.

            Watchmen has an audience score of 71% and a critic score of 64% on rotten tomatoes (just so you're aware that's over a million audience reviews), it has a 7.6 on imdb, heck, the only place where you justify your statement is metacritic and even there it has a critic score of 54% and an audience score of 8.1. To what majority are you referring? I'll concede your point about sucker punch and his owl film, but then again, I'm not talking about sucker punch or his owl film. I'm talking about the DC stuff.

        That's why people who want the Snyder cut should hope Aquaman makes a killing at the box office instead of boycotting.

    The writing's been on the wall for a while that we're not getting "Man of Steel 2" and that any new Superman movie is probably gonna be a soft reboot or reset.

    Love Amy Adams. But wasn't the biggest fan of her as Lois. She did good with the script she was given and her in MoS was the best, but it was a bit hard in hindsight to separate her Lois Lane from her as Amy. Didn't particularly like how much older she was than Henry. Yes, she had the redhead similar comic book look from the Superman/Doomsday era but I don't know.... she just didn't completely sink in for me into the role. It was a short run but at least she is forever part of DC history beyond her short-lived Smallville connection.

            Not really and as you never comment on stuff what isn't DCEU related you wouldn't see my comments where i give nothing but praise. I mean if i hated DC why would i spend a huge amount of money this week on a Batman book what's left me short?

            As for Marvel films better then the Watchmen film well sorry i'm not naming all of them as it will be a long post but this year alone has had 3 Marvel films better then Watchmen. As for Nolan's Trilogy well they are my favorite films so that says it all.

            Watchmen is hugely overrated. It requires immense patient to watch the whole Ultimate Cut of that movie. Call it "ahead of its time" all you want, but majority didn't like it, and it shows on BO numbers and reviews.

    Good, she's one of the few castings of Zach Snyder that I did not like. Good actress but not a good L. Lane imo, I think they will ride WW and Aquaman as far as they can before going back to Superman and doing a full reboot.

      Amy Adams does a lot of serious and dramatic stuff. But she could've pulled off a different type of Lois Lane. In her lighter roles in Night at the Museum 2, and Enchanted, she's been able to show more range.

    Yep, Chris Terrio did some damage.😂 The Lex Luthor plot was so convoluted in BvS, that it really limited Henry Cavill and Amy Adams as actors. Obviously a lot of that falls on Zack Snyder. But I wish Terrio would've injected some more energy and lightheartedness, into Snyder's vision. Lois Lane should be a fun character.       Lois lane isn't always fun. Many times she gets serious and that's what they did with the characters. They Took them seriously so no Chris terio didn't do any damage

    With them potentially recasting Superman (whenever that happens), it's not surprising to see his supporting cast also get recast. Man of Steel was a really good (but flawed) movie so it's a shame it never got to reach its full potential through sequels.
