The fifth and final season of Gotham is in full production right now, and that doesn't mean we won't meet new characters still. It has been known for some time that Bane would be appearing this season, we haven't seen a good look at him in costume yet.

On Monday morning Gotham writer and producer Tze Chun took to Twitter to share the first look at Shane West in his full Bane costume, and it isn't quite what we were expecting.

This is unlike any version of Bane we've seen to date. While he does have the breathing apparatus - no word yet if he is breathing Venom - the full head of hair, and the red circles under his eyes are certainly new.

Gotham will be returning to Fox in 2019 for its fifth and final season. It certainly sounds like it's going to be a full one.

    not digging it. He looks like a version of Darth Vader. I wonder why they're doing the mouth covering like Nolan's Bane. He just needs venom being injected into his veins

    I'd say this looks like a weird Sith Lord/Vader thing, but that seems too much like a compliment.

    The vibe reeks more of Mortal Kombat cosplay somehow.

    ...the showrunners obviously are not concerned with accuracy. And they have every right to not be. We can either shrug and enjoy our cereal, or we can piss in our own bowl and blame it on someone else.

      Much as they have the right to drop the ball on an amazing property, the audience has the right to feel repelled by what they were served.

      Straying from accuracy is one thing, but embarrassing choices are another. When the piss was already in the bowl, you're not excusing anything.

        The only piss provided is by ourselves into our own bowls. You are absolutely correct that audience members have the right to disagree with or dislike choices made by the professionals, but there's a difference between dislike and arrogant hatred (i.e. piss).

        And I have to respectfully disagree that making a character design choice that strays from the source material can be an "embarrassing choice;" it's just sometimes different. It won't always land, obviously, but creative freedom with already-established characters is necessary for inspiration, growth, and variety. Without it, we would just see, hear, and read the same stuff over and over (just look at the history of comics). This Bane definitely won't make purists orgasm, and it won't appeal to all non-purists; but I think the piss always comes from our own reactions to things we dislike, not from someone's different ideas.

          Few people mind this simply because it's 'different'.

          We embraced Bane's design in Rises because it did 'different' with tact and class, and because the costume actually had a base level of quality to it's craftsmanship. The 'Halloween Store' appearance of the visibly cheap, poorly cut rubber sculpt of what's supposed to be plating and wiring here is embarrassing because of it's craftsmanship.

            Well, it's a photo without any context. So there's a good chance the "visibly cheap, poorly cut rubber sculpt" will have a dramatically different look in the final product.

            Alas, a single photo is all most people need nowadays to disparage creative choices.

            Edit: just saw the updated photo. That looks noticeably different to me than the first one. The front-loaded venom system (if that's what it ends up actually being) was an odd choice though. A lot of obvious comparisons there.

    Honestly there are so many things going on with this costume that I can’t understand that it’s just leaving me laughing, but I’ll be watching when the time comes.

      At least Vader's chestplate looked believable. This looks like it was crudely hand-sculpted out of rubber by children, quickly grease-painted, and sold in a Halloween costume shop.

    I don't think something being Elseworlds excuses any adaptation from every choice made.

    There are ways to do it well, and ways to do it poorly. This looks cheap and goofy.

    There were reasons to not hide a known actor's face like Tom Hardy in a big budget movie like TDKR, but here... even a Bane cosplayer mask would have been more accurate and thus better.

      What are you talking about? You can't see Tom Hardy's face in TDKR. There's one shot where you can see it in a flashback for 3/4 of a second.

        Tom Hardy is totally recognizable in TDKR, you see half of his face. An actor who put a real Bane mask wouldn't be recognizable, his face wouldn't be visible.
