Zack Snyder comments on 'Justice League' concept art of Darkseid

This past spring, Warner Bros. released a bunch of Justice League concept art on their WB Movies All Access app along with the digital release of the movie. The concept art above is believed by many fans to be of a young Darkseid, and director Zack Snyder seems to have confirmed that theory on Vero.

"Searching for something that would make him unbeatable," Snyder said on a post of the concept art. This scene looks like it would've been a "history lesson" of Darkseid's origins in the movie.

Update: In another Vero post, Snyder confirmed that this is indeed a look at a young Darkseid, when he was going by the name Uxas.

Darkseid was going to be part of the Snyder Cut of Justice League, but when the movie was changed during reshoots, Darkseid was removed along with other parts setting up a big sequel.

I’m glad they didn’t move with it. Darkseid deserves another visionary. New Gods should be his first appearance.

  He could have been teased similar to Thanos? And it would have been an easy enough explanation for the nightmare scene in BVS.

    Nah. JL is a failed movie from the get go. It wouldn’t make sense to have him this early. It will ruin all the buzz around him. New Gods should be his first movie appearance and then connect it to future JL or something.

      well, the way I see it it could've been a scene like the beginning of The Lord of the Rings with Sauron, a little tease of the big bad guy who will loom menacing for the rest of the story. IMO that could have worked fine enough and audiences would have had some knowledge about the character

      we'll probably not witness a live action Darkseid anytime soon, simply because the character'll be aggressively compared to Thanos. Darkseid won't stand on his own. The casual audience will look at Darkseid like a wannabe Thanos. Darkseid's character has be BETTER than Thanos in almost every way. The movies Darkseid's in has to be better than Infinity War and Avengers 2019. So some time would have to pass for the hype of Thanos to die down. And yes, no matter how much time goes by, the comparison is inevitable, but the more time passes the less people would care and want what/e's "new," i think.
      i believe Darkseid shouldn't be wasted in the DCEU like the Death of Superman storyline was wasted. They should leave Darkseid for the reboot. However, I do like the idea of New Gods movie establishing Darkseid before his coming to earth. That's actually a neat way and could work if they genuinely take their time and treat it with as much care as possible. Anyway, in this current DCEU, if ever another JL movie comes about, the next major super villain should be either Amazo or Felix Faust. Darkseid shouldn't be wasted in this failed universe.

        Everything DC does will always be seen as Diet-Marvel. Superman will be seen as a Diet-Captain America. Shazam as a Diet-Deadpool. Aquaman as a Diet-Black Panther.
        We're always going to be seen as the store brand x to marvels Coca-Cola. But that might not be a bad thing. What the brand NEEDS to do is create a Movie Marvel wouldn't make, that's actually good. They need to make like a Superman Red Son movie or a Batman As A Vampire Movie. A movie that's about big ideas and themes that wont necessarily 'damage the brand' of the characters if they miss the mark like they did with the other movies people disliked.

        I'm actually kind've glad they used it right out of the gate because the death of Superman storyline as well as the aftermath was mostly garbage.

        They are clearly planning to salvage it going forward. If Deadpool and Wolvering can come back from X-3 amd X-Men Origins, DC can come back from this mess.

        uhm...disagree, any movie he'll be in probably won't make $2b & it doesn't have to. WW was better than a handful of Marvel's but doesn't mean it was bigger or more successful, establishing the character in a way that appeals to the general audience should be top priority, rather than 'they'll think he's a thanos rip off'

  i mean if connectivity is specifically what you are looking for in regards to the DCEU, then ya that may be pretty sparse(if even that much) moving forward. If in your mind the DCEU is all of these connected films that come together to form one big finite story and arc, then I would say that, yes, It may no longer be a thing. But if by "DCEU", you simply mean DC movies(aside from elseworld stuff), then it is still very much alive.

  The DCEU is dead and buried. Not even the tombstone is missing (Justice League). With its mortal remains they have made, for now, two films - WW84 and Aquaman-. Shazam has nothing that reminds us of that world created in MOS-BvS, expanded with WW 2017. From now on, we will see independent products with little or no connection at all to that universe. The decision of "what" and "when" will not be based on any common thread but on market research: "Now this character and this story is interesting because of this or that". Supergirl, Birds Of Prey, more Shazam for children,... Whatever.

        There are as many points of view as spectators. I respect everyone's, but personally, I'm not interested in seeing any celebration of the world of superheroes, or tributes of any kind. I want to see GOOD FILMS with superheroes. Films with a soul of their own that say something I haven't heard before from several dozen films of the same genre.

      I agree. They will, but in my opinion they have no right -creatively speaking- to use nothing of what that universe had created.Still less, to squeeze in a certain way something that they themselves (WB) have consciously destroyed. Stylistically and thematically, Shazam completely departs from the DCEU. It's a DC "Spiderman Homecoming", the blatant adoption of the Disney formula for the child/adolescent audience.

  Exactly, they don't even mention the DCEU anymore. After the BvS backlash, they decided to mirror DC comic book trades in their movie universe.
  This is a shame, imo. There is nothing more exciting than a build up to a team event. The best we can hope for are surprise "cameos." WB = crazunk!

Snyder's version of stories and characters should never have been in or called the DCEU. His universe should have been an elseworld storyline. Actually, I am really surprised he never ran with the Injustice universe, emphasis on bashing, not storytelling....right up his alley.

    I mean that's a pretty pessimistic outlook. This film has a writer and a director which is more than can be said for a lot of that other stuff. Also, unlike many of the other projects, this one was officially announced by WB. And Ava seems really into it. I think it could very well happen. The better question is whether or not it will happen before Marvels Eternals

Unless it actually starts being made i'm not expecting anything, the future of DC films right now is Aquaman, WW84, Shazam and Joker and that's only because they are being made or have been made. I would've preferred a lack of origin story in order to keep Darkseid in the "mysterious and intriguing villain" category. I don't always wanna know everything about a character's past in movies. It's fun to wonder sometimes.

        There’s been multiple rumors of what WB wants to do with both characters. They wanted Superman to be the Nick Fury of the DCEU. Rumor is that Reeves’ film was gonna have flashbacks of a young Batman.

        Which was drowned out by the people who hated that this version of Superman killed an evil genocidal alien prick who needed to die, and acted sad and depressed when he survived a terrorist attack that got innocent people killed (y'know, like a human being would).
        Then there's justice league. Where him becoming the version of the character the general audience liked didn't make a bit of logical sense due to the behind the scenes game of thrones that was happening due to the hyperbolic backlash to BVS.

        Yeah and then he wasn't in the show for a whole Season right around year JL was out. DC/WB are very picky on what they allow and don't allow, they allowed CW to use Deathstroke for a few episodes and then stopped them as soon as plans were talked about for a film. Superman appeared for 3 episodes most likely because he had to appear at some point and that's it as he never appeared in S3 or the big Crossover what was crying out for Overman as its big bad.

  Well we're never getting a consistent, beloved cinematic universe like the one Marvel has.
  Yeah, we might see a decent DC movie now and then. But in terms of brand recognition, fan and audience goodwill, and the popularity and recognition of the characters in the public consciousness? Superman, Batman, and the DC brand are in the toilet, and will be seen as second banana to Marvel for the forseeable future. Possibly for good.

        They could have gone with an Injustice Gang. Putting together a group of 4-5 villains. It would have been more interesting, although more difficult to pull off (especially for Zack).

        Look at X-Men.
        Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Jean, Rogue, Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, Toad, Sabretooth, all introduced in one movie and worked just fine.
        JL already had 2 prequels and several characters introduced.
        Again, it was more than achievable for a good filmmaker.

        They could have done something similar in JL. Have a team of villains and only develop 1-2 (the leaders). Secondary villains rarely need a lot of development.

        If the movie works as a whole; meaning it has a good plot, and the main characters are well written, absolutely. People understand than in team-up movies they are not going to get to know every chacter in detail. That's what solo movies are for.

        Yeah, cause having personality is the same as undergoing character development. Sigh. People gave Superman shit for having not that many lines in the theatrical cut. In the first X-Men film, Magneto was the only villain in the entire film who had a personality and spoke more than one line. The rest of the villains barely had jack shit. Sabertooth growled 99% of the time he was on screen. Toad only had one line and showed a little bit of personality when he toyed with Storm. I don't think Mystique had a single bit of dialogue in the entire film. Cyclops basically acted like the jealous boyfriend throughout the film, and that was it.

        Superman was a main character so good character development was expected for him. Plus he had a solo movie.
        I'm not saying JL villains should have been just like X-Men villains. I'm just showing you that a group of villains can work.
        JL villains could have a little more personality, without getting too deep into their stories. They would only need to develop the leader villains.
        It's not impossible to do, but again it requires good writing and directing. It's a lot easier to just throw a dumb CGI monster.

        I thought SS had many problems, but character development wasn't one of them. In fact the movie spent quite some time exploring their back stories. Deadshot and Rick Flag also had very clear motivations. Harley was just a fun character. The rest didn't really need that much dept.

        Kouglof is OK, he is easy to dismiss because his arguments are incredibly stupid. He's a hair better than Hamani and Nahuel.
        Finley and Ninja are way, way worse IMO, because they are articulate, and do amazing mental gymnastics and write essays to apologize for nonsense that any reasonable person can see is a problem. Ignorance on that level is far more frustrating to me personally.
        And I still put Ninja as worse because the dude puts in effort to write essays, literal essays, advocating for his ignorance. Even now he thinks 1) BvS was a massive financial success, 2) Denies how polarizing MoS was, 3) Thinks bright colors can never be realistic despite historical evidence to the contrary, 4) Denies Batfleck murders anyone, 5) Denies how fast Superman is in the universe, 6) Denies that JL was still a majority Snyder film despite evidence to the contrary, that's just off the top of my head.         Hell no... Kouglof is easy to refute, yes. But IMPOSSIBLE to convince... even when he is 100% factually wrong, which is always the case.
        Sure, Ninja used to be the Nr 1, chieftain of Snyderbots, but he's really nowhere near as annoying or as pathologically dishonest as he used to be. He's also grown more accepting of people disliking the DCEU and wanting it to be over and done with. Kouglof is still and will ALWAYS be in denial.
        I bet at this point Ninja would accept that BvS underperformed because it wasn't well liked (or he would probably not attempt to debate it), whereas Kouglof is still absolutely convinced BvS was never going to hit 1 billion (even though its global opening was bigger than most 1B films, like Age of Ultron).

        No they weren't released a few years back because a The Darkseid War was a few years back and that storyline predated TDW by a few years. As for canon no it isn't anymore, in fact anything involving that stuff isn't really canon anymore as Rebirth shook things up and Reborn shaking things up even more. Yeah Earth 2 exists but its history and events no one really knows now.
        By the way comics hyping stuff is something what happens, WW even has her movie look and SS had the movie line up with a Harley what looks like Robbie. Steppenwolf got nothing because he's a D-list villain who isn't even one of Darkseid's best as Granny Goodness and Kalibak have that honer.

        It was still a few years back while the new 52 was still there. Yes it is Canon according to the dc multiverse. Every thing before dc rebirth is still Canon even the new 52. Even Geoff Johns and Jim Lee said that rebirth wasn't a reboot but rather a continuation. Earth 2 exists and everything that happened on it is Canon for that universe.
        Yes its something that happens but not always. The movies should be the one hyping the comics. And he Is definitely not a dc lister. He is a B lister. He can stand toe to toe with kalibak. And he is formidable.

The attempt to make cohesive universe that moves forward as one big storyline is long gone. All they're doing now is making random DC movies without any type of plan. On the other hand Marvel knows exactly where they're going and they're killing it.

The Steppenwolf Hinds had talked about was completely different from what we saw in theaters. His motivation was different. Even his personality was different.

        His talk, again if you bothered reading, paints a whole different picture of Steppenwolf. The Steppenwolf we got was a disgraced, exiled soldier who wanted to rejoin with the New Gods. The Hone Hinds described was on old soldier who was tired of being under his tyrant’s rule, but had no choice but to be the pawn.
        That supports my statement that Steppenwolf had a different personality and motivation.

      I never said anything about catching up to Marvel. I said things will get better, because they already are. There is a middle ground between what the DCEU used to be (utter garbage) and the pinnacle that is the MCU. Right now with Aquaman, WW2 and Shazam, we're somewhere in the middle.

@ HunterZolomon Actually I’ve been reading Avengers and it’s of far better quality then Justice League at the moment, it’s still not the greatest but it’s still better and that’s saying something. The only thing that saves Scott Snyder and his never ending dialogue and cliche boring plots is the incredible artists he works with. The man is the most overrated comics writer currently working. For two years straight DC was crushing Marvel in comics but for the last few months or so they have been better then nearly every DC book out there. DC has been trash since Johns stepped down. Didio better hope Doomsday Clock has a great payoff because it’s the only current DC book worth fucking buying.

  They tried to jump start the DCEU in 2011 with Green Lantern, but that failed so hard Ryan Reynolds is still trying to scrub that title off his resume. Then they tried again with the Snyder shit-fest triad, and failed. Now they stopped trying, because they have no clue how to do what Marvel has achieved, nor will they actually let anyone help them in doing so. I call that a shit show.

The way things are going, with a creative SNAFU this big left at his feet thanks to executive meddling? I doubt he'll ever direct a movie ever again, and even if he does he'll prob NEVER direct a Superhero movie ever again.
Even if his standalone MOS sequel (that he had planned before WB mandated BVS ) was more of the same? It couldn't possibly be any worse than the state the brand is in now.

At this point the only thing I feel towards Zack Snyder is a great sense of pity and sadness. I know how it feels to not have a project come together the way you want it, and what it feels like to have your art rejected by everyone. Especially after having been dealt a shitty creative hand by the people holding the pursestrings.
I hope he can come back from this. But sadly, I doubt he will given everyone blames him for the mess that we're in now. While the nameless executives in charge of WB will go on to ruin more DC projects without losing so much as a nights sleep.

  Well, not everyone despises him, and take into account that most people that are constantly complaining about his movie, then they show to have not understood at all what was on the screen rendering their criticisms useless.
  And WB/DC was a total piece of shit on throwing under the bus and use his daughter death to remove him from the movie.
  They could at least have the decency of remove the "directed by Zack Snyder" title on the JL movie .
