Yesterday Joker director Todd Phillips released a video showing Joaquin Phoenix in a costume with makeup on, and now we know why! He wanted to get ahead of the set photos and videos.

TMZ just shared a Joker set video that shows Joaquin Phoenix in his full costume, complete with his green hair and makeup. The scene was shot in a NYC subway station and shows a crowd rioting and running in fear. It's not clear if it's The Joker they're running from, it doesn't appear like it to me based on the video. Check it out above!

Joker will shoot in NYC through the end of the year. It hits theaters on October 4, 2019.

    And now I wonder if he adopts this persona, and then it's karma when he falls in the acid and looks like this permanently.

        I doubt it will be in the movie; whether the story leaves room for him to survive until the arrival of Batman, allowing us to fill in the story after the movie ends, remains to be seen.

          This has Thomas Wayne in here as some, from his unreliable narrator's POV (which I love the idea of), shit-ass business man tycoon asshole, right? Well, then I'd doubt Batman backs into this movie as well with ACE Chemicals too. I'm really hoping so, but, the timeline doesn't add up. Although, they don't need him to make him the Joker, but., it'd be great to get a late 80's, hard streets, gritty, weird, Joker/Batman vibe again like '89 Batman.

    definitely a Caeser Romero and Heath Ledger vibe going on. What seems strange to me is the coloured nose and the extra eyebrows.

      We'll see. I still think it's odd to have this movie while still having Leto's Joker out there somewhere. Maybe. Hard to say what the guys at WB are thinking.

      It can be done either way. I prefer adding the s because you SAY it, but if the commenter is a journalist, that’s exactly how they’re supposed to do it. You’re not wrong, but can’t correct him because he isn’t either.

    I can’t be the only one that noticed the hexagon pattern from Joaquin’s Joker shirt. They’re exactly like the one’s Heath’s Joker had on his shirt.
    What the fuck is going on with that?
    Is this like gonna be one of those plot twists in which this turns to be a prequel to Nolan’s Joker ._.
    Highly unlikely; but still, what’s up with that?

        The whole outfit down to the dark green long hair, the materials the suit's made of, the look of the suit, all 3 pieces, everything has a Ledger vibe to it.

      Might be a homage, he's got hints of Romero as well so maybe they are referencing different Joker's subtly. Saying that this being a prequel to The Dark Knight has crossed my mind, the only problem with that theory though is ages and dates, ignoring the fact Phoenix is a lot older then what Ledger was the dates would create problems as this is set in the 80's what would make Joker in his 50's/60' in TDK what he clearly wasn't.

          I'm looking at face and mannerisms what clearly have a hint of Romero, don't worry when you get older and are less edgy you will hopefully learn to like Romero's take as well.

        I saw the close up shots that were released later on; in those you can clearly see the circles.

    I insist: Phoenix reminds me a lot of Joker Ledger, likewise, also the Joker of Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo.

    I always strongly disliked the fscepaint approach. As much as I liked Ledger’s Joker it just doesn’t feel right for the character to wear facepaint!! I really hope this isn’t the final design but Everyone assumed that when we first saw Joker covered with hideous tattoos. I don’t know why it’s so difficult to nail the iconic comic book look of the Joker on screen. But whatever lol. Seeing that this is an alternative universe Joker movie it could very well be Joker by title with aspects from the comics but really it’s own original little thing like that Catwoman movie from ages ago.

    i dont care what is oficial in the end, in the great scheme of things, in my head, this is the joker legend who lived in bvs' batman's time, he psychologically tortured jason todd into becoming the new joker, and for thats batman killed him, but cant bring himself to end the new joker... done

      no problem with that, harley is a relative new creation compared to the joker, the classic joker had never had an assistant like her until the animated series, it would make sense she would be a creation of the new joker

    That train station is where a cousin of mine lives, the building is right above actually. I've been at that train stop many times in the Bronx. Damn it, if I would have known. Looks freaking amazing, all of it. Best movie of 2019, at least the most hyped.

        Solid 10. The guy is a great actor but he didn’t have much to work with at all in Suicide Squad and I think he tried to hard at times.

        Moving forward if the film does really well can WB afford to leave the Joaquin version of the Joker alone and as a one and done?

          That’s what will be frustrating! But surely they can’t have two iterations of Batman at the same time, assuming that this ISN’T a starting point for Reeves’ bat universe. Could you imagine if they pulled that off?

    Yeah, it seems that way. If you look closely, the guy getting beaten is an a suit, Wall Street type. Seems that this Joker, out of money and out on his luck, blames the rich for his situation. Hence, maybe why he kills Thomas Wayne eventually...anyways, just my thoughts.

    It’s interesting to see another portrayal of the Joker be set in the 80’s. This could be an alternate universe to Batman ‘89. I feel like this movie is going to leave us wanting more and as of now, this is a one and done, unconventional movie based on a comic book character.

        I love Zack (as you know), but I thought of Scott immediately just because of his fantastic Joker stories in the New 52.

        It makes more sense - and I actually feel very encouraged that they're acknowledging him as a significant part of the character's legacy while making this film.

    But what if this movie is so good that fans will just ask for these kinds of movies and not the DCEU kind. This is my only concern about this solo movie. I mean who would not love to see an entire DC universe made up like this, or at least a complete Batman universe.

    It looks too Heath Ledgery for my taste. I don’t like the red on the nose as I think joaquin phoenix has the perfect beaky joker nose in real life but the red paint kind of hides it.
