First look at 'Batman: The Animated Series' in 1080p HD, coming to Blu-ray and Digital in October

Last month at San Diego Comic-Con we got official details about the HD remastered Blu-ray release of Batman: The Animated Series. Today, Warner Bros. is showing off 1080p footage for the first time and making some exciting announcements.

The Batman: The Complete Animated Series Deluxe Limited Edition Blu-ray will now come with a digital copy as well, so you can watch the show on your phone while you're on the go. The release date has been pushed back slightly, it will now be available on October 30th. It's available for pre-order on Amazon for 10% off the retail price.

It wouldn’t make sense to do 16:9 since it was originally cell animated as 4:3.

To change it to 16:9 would mean cropping in and losing part of the frame, which would definitely piss me off. I’m glad they’re retaining the shows original integrity.

The Wire was shot on 35mm film and cropped for its 4:3 TV presentation. You actually saw much less of the recorded image in the original airing. When the show was edited for a 16:9 aspect ratio they utilized more of the available 35mm image which opened up the frame to a dramatic degree. This is not the case with an animated show like Batman which is made with a strict 4:3 ratio in mind. There is no leeway to open up the frame so a 16:9 edit would severely crop the image in this case.

  Thanks. This saved me a lot of time lol.
  That being said, the wire did run into composition problems because they still originally framed for 4:3. You can see comments by the creator on how they did their best to circumvent the issue...but yeah they were lucky in the fact that they shot on 35 mm.
  Also adding in that Mask of the Phantasm is 16:9 because it was made with theatrical release in mind. Animated shows back in the day had no reason to do anything but 4:3.

    Yeah, they had to compromise the original vision a bit on The Wire, but the end result was quite good. It definitely wasn't cropped as some people assumed.

That's great news about the digital copies. I dunno if it will include codes for the 2 movies as that will be a nice bonus. But the movie codes may not be included in this set as they are from the WAC. They may be just for the show only & the movies are left out on their own on disc. I would also hope that WB will put out the digital copies with this set worldwide as fans in the UK & Ireland were left out with no digital copies of Batman '66 with their particular box sets.

the Digital copy that one is forced to use on VUDU, refers to the old dingy DVD versions from day one... INCREDIBLY TICKED OFF RIGHT NOW...sure, you give to their flagship network in HD, but those who bought the Bluray set, NOPE. Digital copy is worthless and nothing has been done about it... same old trashy and tired, murky DVD versions WTF?! WB and VUDU NEED to fix this fast!!

Colors look brighter and image sharper in the 1080 but I already have the original complete set. Part of the nostalgia for me is the way it looked back then, with its dark moody colors. That style and texture enhances that whole noir Gotham mood for me. I'm immediately transported back to that time when it came out. That 1080 vibe doesn't feel authentic to me. The sharpness makes Gotham look brighter than normal when the city is a character itself.

I suppose preferring the old stuff makes me an old fuddy-duddy now.
