Ben Affleck checked himself into rehab this week after an intervention from Jennifer Garner

on Ben Affleck checked himself into rehab this week after an intervention from Jennifer Garner

Ben Affleck has been dealing with alcohol addiction for a while now. He first entered rehab for alcohol abuse back in 2001. Then in March of last year he announced that he had completed treatment for alcohol addiction. He went back to rehab last December, and this week he checked himself into a live-in rehab facility in the Los Angeles county.

TMZ broke the news on Wednesday night, and says that it was Affleck's wife Jennifer Garner (the two separated in 2015 but are not officially divorced yet) who staged an intervention with him on Wednesday afternoon, begging him to get help. TMZ's sources say that Affleck didn't put up a fight and understood that he needed to go to rehab.

The tipping point for Garner was when she saw paparazzi photos of Affleck receiving a box of beer and liquor from a delivery man. TMZ has more details and photos if you want to learn more.

I'm sharing this on Batman News because Affleck is the latest actor to play Batman and this could have an impact on his future in the role. Reliable sources have been saying for a while now that Affleck isn't expected to star in The Batman, which begins filming next spring/early summer. And that's probably best for Affleck. Right now he needs to focus on his health and treating his addiction.

I am convinced that you are not actually genuine about this, but rather are trying to bait and enflame a racist war in the comments section. Based on your comments on other articles about race. At first I thought you were genuine, but seeing this, I know you're not.

Bruce Wayne is a white man. There are plenty of other characters you can modify race with and no one will have an issue, but Bruce Wayne is white. His whole thing is that he's an over-privileged white man who inherits an uninmaginable fortune off a terrible event and chooses to use that wealth for good.

I feel very conflicted about this... On the one hand, as someone who's dealt with severe depression several times throughout my life (and probably will again in the future) and suicidal thoughts, I can relate to people with mental illnesses and people who need help... on the other hand, I don't think I actually view addiction as a mental illness. I have never understood why it is so hard to stop drinking. In my case, I did nothing to myself to become depressed. That was due to external factors outside of my control, yet I pushed through and still fixed the problem myself by doing some extremely deep soul-searching. With alcoholics, these people - as hard as it is to say - DID do it to themselves. They had a CHOICE in the matter. I don't buy the whole "you can't blame them because they had problems"-argument. Guess what? EVERYONE has problems. Even when I was at my lowest, I never once resorted to any drugs or other substances to momentarily relieve my pain. Why would I? What would that achieve (especially in the long run)? It would only make matters worse. I CHOSE never to drink (I have never been drunk in my life), nor use any drugs. I have other family members who've been depressed and had extremely shitty lives and again, NONE of them resorted to substances. I just don't get it.
I've only had one alcoholic in my family (pretty far removed, never really knew him that well) but from what his brothers and father told me, he did it mostly because his recklessness and love for partying and refusal to accept responsibility grew out of control to the point that he got addicted. And from the other alcoholics I know, it's usually the same thing. It's usually a pretty selfish reason: as in momentary pleasure forsaking the feelings and well-being of their loved ones and from what I can see, Ben is no different.

He had it all, an amazing wife, kids, a promising career... but he's always been a party boy and has always enjoyed drinking and gambling. Then he got addicted and now his family suffers his foolishness. Again, on the one hand, I wish him the best, but I just can't help but think how incredibly fucking selfish and cowardly Ben is to lower himself to this. If he was on his own, whatever. But this guy is a fucking father. That's just unacceptable imo. From the moment you have kids, your life isn't about you anymore and your wishes become secondary. He's put his own desires first, and his family second. That honestly disgusts me, especially when I look at my father and how selfless he has always been (even though he's also a deeply flawed person in his own right, but NEVER when it came to being there for me and my siblings).

Ultimately, I do feel really sorry... but not for Ben... I feel sorry for Jen and her kids. Especially when you see how much this affects her and even after all the shit he did to her, she STILL is there for him. Hats off to her, that is the classic nurturing female power you don't see often nowadays anymore. I wish Ben a speedy recovery, not for his sake, but for his family's.
I know I will piss off a lot of people here by saying this, but these are my honest thoughts on the matter.

          Bruce

'I don't think I actually view addiction as a mental illness'
Again, "science". It's not really important what your opinion (or your opinion of your opinion) is here.

'I have never understood why it is so hard to stop drinking'
lolz, right? I mean, just, don't, like, take a drink? Doy!

Alcohol is a depressant. (That's a scientific word). In short, it fucks with your central nervous system. That's what makes it both a disease and an addiction. And, according to people who have actually spent time studying this, addictions are hard to beat.

          'yet I pushed through'
That's great for you. But that doesn't mean that everyone else is just like you. "Depression" is not just a feeling of overwhelming bummed-ness. It is, in fact, a medical illness. Hell, some of us get colds and just "push through". You can break a leg and "just push through".

You relate your entire understanding of mental health and the seriousness of alcohol addiction to your partying uncle. Your entire self-serving post reeks of "well if people just didn't have moral failings they'd just be OK. That poor, sweet woman."

I don't give a crap about Ben Affleck. Well, any more than I give a crap about any random person. (OK, I'm rooting for him to fail, his wife to put her kids in military school, push my wife down the stairs, grab my hand and whisk me away to a beach somewhere). But it's asinine to be so cavalier and flip about this. That's like saying, "Why didn't Christopher Reeve get over that whole horse thing?" or "If only Senator McCain had put some effort into fighting cancer."

You can't say stupid shit, finish with "I know I will piss off a lot of people", and then act all surprised when you get called out.

          1. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to Bruce

... Science doesn't consider alcoholism a mental disorder. It is the other way around, alcoholism causes mental issues. You're just a fool who considers his opinion as fact and then whines when others supposedly do the same.

"lolz, right? I mean, just, don't, like, take a drink? Doy!"
            I still stand by it.

"In short, it fucks with your central nervous system. That's what makes it both a disease and an addiction"
Really? I had no idea it was an addiction. Thanks for clearing that out.
Mate, you so missed the point it's almost worrying... Before one is addicted, one has to consistently drink in large portions. Why would anyone do such a thing? The same thing is true for smoking. It actually takes quite a long time (around 2 years, according to your beloved "science") before the nicotine addiction really kicks in. That means people smoke for years without actually feeling the need to smoke. The point is, at some point, they didn't do it out of necessity. They did it because they wanted to and that's the problem... A strong will is all it takes to quit and addiction. The problem isn't that people are actually addicted. The problem is, most of the time addicts don't WANT to stop.
I've known many people who used to smoke heavily... then they got kids, or just decided to stop smoking and never touched a cigarette again. They usually had a reason to stop.
I don't excuse weak-mindedness the same way you do.

""Depression" is not just a feeling of overwhelming bummed-ness. It is, in fact, a medical illness"
            Exactly, which proves my point.

"You relate your entire understanding of mental health and the seriousness of alcohol addiction to your partying uncle"
            I don't.

"Your entire self-serving post reeks of "well if people just didn't have moral failings they'd just be OK. That poor, sweet woman.""
Tell me how many strong willed, morally centered, good people are out there that are also alcoholics. I'll gladly wait for this sure to be long list of people.
As I said before, you can't play the "addiction" crap... It takes years before one is addicted. That means, YEARS of irresponsible and reckless behavior on the part of the "future" alcoholic. That's inexcusable.

"But it's asinine to be so cavalier and flip about this"
I'm not though. Only thing I find disgusting is he puts his personal desires before his kids.

"That's like saying, "Why didn't Christopher Reeve get over that whole horse thing?""
One of the most retarded analogies I have ever heard in my life. Reeve didn't have a choice. His condition was permanent. And as for how he dealt with it emotionally, he did the best he could.

"or "If only Senator McCain had put some effort into fighting cancer.""
AGAIN, he had NO choice in the matter.
Alcoholics HAVE A CHOICE. They CHOSE to drink pathologically before they were even truly addicted. And even when they are addicted, they still have a choice. You can't choose "not" to have cancer. Jesus Christ, what kind of idiot are you?

"You can't say stupid shit, finish with "I know I will piss off a lot of people", and then act all surprised when you get called out"
The irony of that statement is lost on you, evidently.

Thanks for proving my point. In it, they merely define the contribution or correlation, they don't say it *is* a mental disorder in and of itself. Again, the irony of your utter stupidity and obliviousness is lost on you, clearly.

Also, even as a """simile""", those statements make no sense. Though you're clearly just looking for excuses at this point.

          4. Bruce Avatar
            Brucereplying to Seb

The point was - and write this down, you may come across it again - was to make an absolutely absurd comparison, to show how asinine your own argument is.

Obviously, I don't know you, but based on your post (and your defense of it), your lack of empathy and compassion for others' suffering is just somewhere between unnerving and heartbreaking.

          5. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to Bruce

Except it isn't. Dude, this is some hardcore backtracking and piss poor justification on your part.
Your "simile" was simply incorrect. And acknowledging the absurdity of your asinine comparison doesn't actually justify it.

Also, you still don't get my issues here. I have sympathy for people's suffering... What I don't pitty is people who don't take responsibility and reject their own agency in favor of selfish desires... Especially when that recklessness affects others.
I find that inexcusable, almost as much as I think making excuses for it is unacceptable.

I don’t have a problem with tweaking characters’ races in which it is entirely unimportant to the character, but Bruce Wayne is not one of those instances. Bruce Wayne is white. It is an iconic and essential part of the character’s appearance and it is a necessary aspect of his story; old, American money would HAVE to be white.
