Aquaman director James Wan got his start in the horror genre with movies like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. So naturally, he'll be bringing some horror elements to Aquaman as well. In a new interview with Total Film magazine, Wan recalls his pitch meeting with Warner Bros. about making sure they were cool with him including monsters.
"I said, 'I can have monsters in there. Are you guys OK if I have monsters in there?' They said, 'Have monsters!'," Wan recalled. But even though he's done a lot of horror movies, Wan doesn't want to be known as just a horror director.
"I love [horror]. It’s definitely the best way to break into the industry. I just became somewhat synonymous with it, so that people had a harder time seeing me for anything else outside of horror," Wan explained. "I just wanted to prove that I’m not just a horror filmmaker, I’m a filmmaker, period."
Wan also knows it's going to be an uphill battle to get the mainstream to care about an Aquaman movie after the hero has been a joke in pop culture for so long. But he appears to welcome that challenge.
"Let’s face it, [Aquaman is] the superhero that everyone makes fun of," Wan told Total Film. "There was a bit of reservation at the start about whether or not I should pursue this character. But the more I thought about it, I always love being the underdog. Coming from the horror genre, you’re always the underdog. So I got used to that mentality."
Aquaman hits theaters on December 21st.
