HBO picks up 'Watchmen' TV series, set to debut in 2019

After ordering a pilot episode last year, HBO has officially picked up an entire season of Damon Lindelof's Watchmen. The series is set to debut sometime in 2019.

The cast includes some DC Extended Universe stars like Batman v Superman's Jeremy Irons and Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Watchmen will also star Regina King, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon.

Watchmen on HBO will not adapt the comic books of the same name. The network said that, “‘Watchmen’ embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.”

“Some of the characters will be unknown,” Lindelof explained. “New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes…and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks.”

I really was looking forward on them continuing after what happened after the Watchmen movie. I just don’t understand how they making this series... they are taking inspiration from the comics ?

The movie really was not good, and should bets be forgotten.
People who defend the movie mystify me, as it pretty much ignored the very point of the book at the expense of cool visuals.

  I agree with this criticism to an extent. I still enjoyed it for what it was, but there was definitely a prioritization of gore, sex, and coolness over the character development, themes, and mystery.

    My main criticism was that part of what the comic was about was deconstructing superheroes, showing how *human* these characters were, with only Ozymandias being something akin to a traditional superhero.
    If you remember in the comic, Rorshach scales up the Comedians building painstakingly slowly with a rope, very manually. Snyder had him zip up there like Batman. Then you have the comedian punching through concrete columns like he was Superman or something...
    He made them all into superhumans in the movie, which I think misses the point completely.
    And dare I say I think your comment applies to every movie made by that man, but well...we know that already.

      First, we can't say how much of the script was Snyder, and how much was the credited writers, so laying every criticism at Snyder's feet when, at the end of the day, he's trying to make a movie, has never seemed right to me (and I'll say the same for Joss Whedon and JL, tbh).
      Second, when does Comedian punch through a concrete column? I just rewatched the movie last weekend and didn't catch that.
      Third, I get your point about Rorschach climbing, but that would add additional time to an already long movie and, IMHO, wouldn't really add to the depiction in the film. Also, the grappling gun, to me, is no less realistic or superheroic than Archie and Archie was in the original book. So, IMO, he did hit the important character points from the book, including the deconstructionist elements, while also bringing out something that hadn't really hit me when I read the book in the first place: the innate horror that some people are struck with when they hear the name, "Richard Nixon."
      And, at the end of the day, would you have preferred that Terry Gilliam had made the movie?

      A competent director could have shown Rorschach climbing and it would not have taken any more time. I think it would absolutely add to the depiction of the film, because the point was meant to be that these were very human characters, not DC super heroes.
      The owlship is a lot more realistic than the grappling gun. The owlship is just an aircraft shaped and styled in a certain way...we could build that in the real world if we wanted. The grappling hook is nigh impossible.
      And GIlliam is a weird choice, but I could name at least 10 other directors who would not have butchered the movie.

      See, to me, the point of Watchmen was always that, if these superheroes were real people, this is the kind of people they might actually be. I see the Comedian punching through thin tile or paneling with drywall behind it; not at all unrealistic for a perfectly pumped-up man as Edward Blake obviously was.
      Terry Gilliam was the choice; he was attached to the movie for years after he made Brazil. And, from what I understand, it was very much going to be "take the Watchmen source material (or the Sam Hamm script for the film) and make a Terry Gilliam movie out of it." That would have been the story that started with the Watchmen acting as a team, failing to stop terrorists who were trying to blow up the Statue of Liberty. I'll take Snyder, who was at least trying to translate the book to film, over whatever Gilliam would have come up with (and I've been a Monty Python fan for 40 years).

      It's clearly not thin tile with drywall behind it, it's clearly solid tile, and no human being can punch through something like that and take that much of the wall away with a single punch.
      And the point is still that they were *human*. If superheroes were *real people*. You said it yourself.

      I'm not saying it's a disaster. I just think it strayed from the path more than it should have with such a limited amount of screentime for such a huge story.
      You'll be hard pressed to find me complaining about the painstaking love letter that the rest of the film is.
      One guess I have is that the increased 'edginess' compared to the book was to make it more exciting to convince WB it was a project that would sell (and therefore they would let him make it), and they could use the harder R as a marketing tool.
      I definitely don't think Zack didn't care about honoring, or didn't love, the book. He labored to echo everything otherwise.
      Still, there is potential for a TV adaptation to do things a movie couldn't (and the one we got - somewhat understandably - didn't).

      The point I'm making is that YO is an origin story. I've provided numerous evidence for that, and thus it is fact. For all your talk of training, that's really just so you can deny that YO is an origin story, which was your original point.
      We can talk about how significant his training to his origin is, and if perhaps his training should be play a larger role in his origin story, once you grow up and admit that YO is an origin story.       Originally, you were denying that YO was an origin story at all.
      That is what we were debating, and all other subsequent disagreements were branched from that main point.

      Now, 17 days later, I seem to have finally gotten through to you. The fact that you brought the discussion in front of someone whose opinion you respect who happened to essentially side with me seemed to have also help.
      17 days ago, you flat out denied that YO was an origin story at all. Now, 17 days later, you are able to admit that it IS an origin story.
      That's progress, and I'm happy to have been able to get through to you.
      I won't bother touching the bait about the definitive origin story, as I do happen to think YO is that because it's DC who get's to decide what is and is not definitive for their characters, but I know we disagree on that and it is more a matter of opinion.
      That aside, I'm happy to discuss the secondary point, which is whether or not his training is part of his origin story. Of course I consider it part of his origin story, I never said it wasn't, it's why it was referenced in YO after all. I just don't consider it a CORE part of his origin story. If Bruce had been wandering the world depressed and partying and not training before having some event that shocked him and forced him to go back to Gotham, I think YO could have played out pretty similarly, with the main difference being he wouldn't have been as capable or skilled due to the lack of training.

    It can be, but I think you can also leave it out and still call it an origin story.
    While his world journey and training are formative parts of his conjuring his persona, the critical part is showing what made him decide to become Batman in the first place.
    Is the context here Year One? If so, I'd say Year One is more of a shortly-after-origin story that also reflects on the origin. So it's not strictly an origin story, but it does in ways relate to, and include flashes of, the origin (very tactfully). Kind of like Batman '89. :)
    You can do this at any point in Batman's career, and with any percentage of the rest of the book being about other things. With that in mind, whether something 'is an origin' versus 'includes an origin' would have to be determined by the amount of the story that the origin is focused on and directly relevant.
    Personally this doesn't really matter much to me, because I'll love it if it's done well and has a meaningful effect on the story, even if I've seen it a thousand times before. haha
    I may have gotten away from the point you were after here, so, my short answer is 'True'.

      So, just for context, he is asking you that because of another discussion in another thread that he can't let go, and has kept replying long apst the point of absurdity.
      His original claim as that Year One was not an origin story, and that is clearly false. Miller was commissioned to write an origin story, and that's what he did. DC comics currently as well as all staff in any position of authority past and present all consider it an origin story, and thus it is.
      It's that simple.
      My opinion is that his training is not core to his becoming Batman, but it was something that he decided to use after he became Batman. Year One is an origin story because it shows the problem of him not knowing how to fight crime, coming up with the idea of the Batman, and putting it into practice.
      At the start of Year One there is not even the idea of Batman, and at the end of the story it is well established and Batman has been created and put into practice. Thus...it is the origin story of Batman.
      Really can't believe the insecurity of and ego on that guy that he couldn't just let stuff lie after 100 messages and had to bring it up in another thread.

      Is the idea here to defend YO as a source of inspiration for Matt Reeves' Batman film from people who feel bored of seeing Batman's origin?
      I don't see the big deal about any of it, myself. Whether YO is an origin story or Matt Reeves wants to adapt - or semi-adapt - an origin for Batman in his film is not worth fighting over to me.
      I'd rather just see what happens, and I'll probably enjoy it whether it has an origin, part of an origin, or none at all. :p

      It was in another thread, entirely unrelated to this one. I can link you to it if you like but it's kind of a pointless exercise since the thread devolved into insults.
      Basically, legend is adamant that YO is not an origin story because it doesn't show Bruce's worldy training.
      My points were that:
      -DC specifically commisioned Miller to do an origin story, accepted it, and thus it is an origin story.
      -Bruce's training was not core to his being Batman. He was training to fight crime but had no idea how. Batman isn't an idea in his head until year one. We see the entire genesis of Batman happen in YO.
      -Multiple Elseworld interpretations don't have the training as a part of the origin and in some cases have it happen after, like Earth One
      -Snyder also didn't focus on the training in Zero Year
      -Denny, Miller, Lee, Didio, everyone in a position of authority considered YO an origin story.
      It's just legend refuses to accept that it is. I can get him arguing that it should not be or that he doesn't like it as one, but to deny that it is one seems foolish.
      This should settle it for any reasonable people, taken from a DC comics website:

      I pretty much agree with your points here. I mean, it doesn't include the "complete" origin including all the world traveling and stuff, but, as I said in my first reply, it doesn't have to include that to be considered an origin anyway.
      I see shades of grey here, and it's maybe a little more complicated than just being an origin story, or that to officially be an origin story it strictly must include everything that composes the entire origin. It's somewhere in-between all that, and I think it strikes a healthy balance of telling the story of Gotham's first year with a Batman against giving us enough of the origin slightly re-imagined to emotionally invest us in Batman's early quest.
      So, I guess a fairer question might be: Is YO primarily an origin story, or is it another story that includes the bulk/gist of an origin? Either way you slice it, the origin is clearly there in a considerable capacity.
      What I don't get is why it's so important, other than it potentially effecting Matt Reeves' movie as an influence - which is a great thing in general.
      Damn. Now I want to read it again. It's probably been... 8 years now since the last time I re-read it. Not counting when I saw the animated version. :)

      I think it shows the most base part of Batman's origin, which is coming up with the character and idea and putting it into practice. It mentions the training and parents murder as much as is needed without taking the focus away from telling about how Bruce came up with Batman and put it into practice.
      Why is it so important? It's not. Legend just refuses to admit that YO is an origin story at all.     Given that that whole "world journey" thing didn't even appear in comics for the first 50 years that Batman existed, I'd say it's completely dispensable and, depending on the teller of the tale, doesn't even need to happen at all for Bruce to become Batman.

      Here's the thing: when I was first reading comics, it wasn't part of the origin. So whether it is currently or not, it's completely irrelevant to me. I don't care about that part of the story (the "world travel" thing) at all. To me, it's a nothing.

      Well yeah, but when you're talking about applying something like that to Batman, it's presently a hypothetical which doesn't effect the question.
      And just because something means nothing to you personally doesn't mean it isn't currently canon, or that it would become somehow a 'never was' in terms of being an origin just because it got retconned later.
      Regardless of personal preferences, it's factually part of Batman's origin at this point in time.

      I think at the end of the day, the core of this discussion is that your last statement is false. None of it is factual; it's all stories, and no one involved in publishing the books is going to let canon stand in the way of a good story, or even a mediocre story if it's told by a big name writer or artist whose name can sell books. And if the people who own the characters don't truly care about canon, why should we worry about it?

      Exactly, it's not core to his being Batman at all. It's something extra, and in the case of the mainstream comics Batman it's part of what make him as good as he is, but it was never core to his origin.
      To claim it is shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the character.

      It seems from this comment string (and maybe I'm stretching) that you view Batman as a skeletal set of staple ideas that otherwise has a sort of malleable mass around it that can lose things, gain things, or trade things and still remain Batman. The core, or skeleton, is what really matters, and the rest is free to be artistically reinterpreted.
      This perspective lets me enjoy Keaton, Bale, and Affleck despite their differences from the comics. (As well as comics that don't jive with each other.)
      Legend, from what I have observed, takes a much more strict, canon-focused perspective, where Batman is specifically an accumulation of his evolved parts. I think this is also fair and understandable, and I enjoy this view as well even though I don't consider it strongly necessary for the character to be "Batman" for me. It's more of a definitive view, which makes sense.
      So that might be part of the headbutting here, unfortunately. I think both views are perfectly fair though.

      You're more or less on the money with how I view Batman. If that wasn't true objectively, the character would never be able to be reinterpreted. I'd say that's true for any character.
      The cause of the headbutting isn't what you say though. It's that Legend is unable to admit something that is objectively true because he doesn't like it.
      YO is an origin story. There is no question. It's objective fact and would be considered such in a court of law.
      DC commissioned and accepted the story with the purpose of it being an origin story. They continue to sell and advertise it as an origin story. Everyone in a position of authority past and present at DC considers it an origin story. There is no doubt that it is a Batman origin story.
      I get that Legend thinks it is lacking and doesn't think it should be one, but that's what he should argue, not that it isn't one. That's akin to arguing Trump is not president just because you don't like him. It's a base denial of reality.

This is a weird series and i wish they were more clear. I get its not an adaption of the book and i get its not a sequel either but what i don't get is what the hell is it, i have some faith because HBO but it honestly seems like Lindelof is trying to throw around whatever trash is in his head using the Watchmen name.

I think this should have been a mini series what adapts the book but adds some new twists and updates a few things and expanding other things.

I think it is an adaptation of the book that changes things. From the tidbits we have gotten it doesn't seem to be a sequel at all, but rather changing events and focus slightly.

  I like the questions and ideas it asks but what i don't like are the poorly written and dumb characters, plotlines what lead to nothing and the fact all the good idea are wasted. Also the fact its part of the Alien universe is annoying, the film would have been better off as its own thing rather then being tied to something what most of its audience would rather see in the film.

  Because the movie from 2009 is already based on a self contained CB of twelve chapters. If the series is based on the same original CB it would be like watching an inferior copycat version of a product which already exists, whereas adapting Before Watchmen could be original.

I would have liked a sequel of the events in Watchmen in the future like 20 or 30 years later but i guess we are going to get a loosely based adaptation, i don't know how to feel about that but HBO has high standards so i doubt they would just pick a badly written show but who knows...

HBO doesn't greenlight a series unless they are fully satisfied with the material they have. They reshot whole pilot of GOT & Westworld and made changes to rest of the season because they were not happy with it and they were not cheap shows so i trust them to deliver a kickass 1st season.

I'm sure the Watchmen will be a great quality series but im already anticipating something after the watchWat HBO series. I want to see them make a Darkseid War film adaptation on HBO. Read the comic, it's full of action and story, and some of the best DC comics characters. By the way, if you're trying to make a DC comics movie and it's not happening, try to make it on a premium channel such as HBO or AMC, I can say i will definitely be watching the movie or series
