on Ruby Rose quits Twitter after being trolled over Batwoman casting

Last week Ruby Rose was cast as Batwoman for the big Arrowverse crossover event that will be airing on The CW this December, as well as for the upcoming Batwoman show that The CW is working on. Her casting was met with a mixed response, I saw many Batman News readers commenting on her acting abilities. But apparently she received much worse criticism on Twitter.

According to Deadline, Rose quit Twitter last night after being trolled by fans for not being gay enough to play Batwoman, who is a lesbian in the comics and on the upcoming TV shows. Rose came out as a lesbian at the age of 12. Deadline documented her last tweets before she deleted her account:

“Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.”

“When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable… when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey/ love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more, My wish was we were all a little kinder and more supportive of each other…Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it’s been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially.”

“I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”

Rose appeared on The Tonight Show last week and got very emotional talking about how much being cast as Batwoman meant to her.

        I wouldn't say that's the case.
Listen, I have a history of depression so I know what it's like to feel worthless (and to a certain extent, I still feel that way to this day. I think a part of me always will. It comes and goes), but I have NEVER been bothered by the vilest of personal attacks, even at my lowest point. Funny thing is, I once got into a debate with a guy who said the typical "you can't say that"-crap. I challenged him and he refused to believe me. I hate to bring this up, but he was a Muslim and I'm not obviously and I argued that people can say whatever they like about religion, even if it offends him. He obviously disagreed as he said to me atheists or Westerners deliberately attack Islam, not out of ideological differences, but to deliberately spite Muslims as people, as he believed "offense is given, not taken" (when it's precisely the opposite), to which I said: "Offend me. Try your best to make me angry". I'm not joking. I don't think this bit is surprising, but he failed. He couldn't touch me... and this just after I suffered from severe depression.

If I can do it under those circumstances (and I was 19 or 20 at the time), then an adult with far more experience should be able to take these petty insults and see them for what they are: meaningless words. Who gives a fuck? Sticks and stones may hurt my bones, but words will never hurt me. Words to live by, but ooh noo... Today, everyone is always so fucking offended by everything.
Yes, what happened to Ruby sucks and these people are jerks for bullying her... But at the end of the day, she's still the weak one for letting it get to her. Yes, this is a choice. You can easily train yourself to let these things go. Imo, this behavior on her part is just plainly childish and pathetic. She needs to grow a pair.

        1. ItzSilentStorm Avatar

ya its a nice saying and all and it is ultimately true, but the fact of the matter is, most people are, to some extent of another, hurt by words. Its always been this way. If nobody let words affect their emotions, we would be living in a very different world. And in the case of this Ruby Rose thing, when there is a lot of hurtfulness being thrown at you, its not out of the ordinary for people to just shut out the negativity. In this case, by deleting her twitter.

          1. Seb Avatar
            Sebreplying to ItzSilentStorm

People being hurt by words is not an argument, it's an observation. Just because that's how it is, doesn't mean that's how it should be or that it is okay to be the way it is.

Also, it's one thing to be verbally abused by a close relative or loved one, for years... but it's another thing entirely to be offended or hurt by internet trolls. If she was verbally abused by her father for years as result of her career and sexuality, I wouldn't blame her for taking offense and being severely hurt by it. But we are not talking about her family or friends. We're talking about internet trolls. If you let those random nobodies hurt you, you're weak. Plain and simple.

I think you see the problem. But the reason is that the media is controlled by SJW’s, as well, and there seems to be a genuine belief in the radical left today that their end goal, the thing they blindly believe so passionately is justice (when in reality it’s gone far past that in many ways), trumps truth. They can’t let all the faults see the light of day or else that end goal might be compromised. They can’t let the cracks show.

      1. Rust Avatar
        Rust

I can't tell if the media is controlled by them or if it's purposely manipulating people's emotions for ratings (or perhaps political control) and thereby creating them.

The followers range from sincere to bandwagon attention-seekers. I feel more suspicious of the media's motives than the followers. It's like classic race-baiting spiraled out of control into all these other topics.

Well I mean all of Hollywood is pretty liberal, the press is in bed with liberal politicians, etc.

But you’re right that there are those who are simply indoctrinated, because that’s simply the only information that’s pumped out to them - through the media, through higher education, etc. - and there are those who should know better: the champions of today’s cultural narratives, those who are the researchers and the authority figures and such. They manipulate the information that is available to begin with, continuing to propagate such myths (or at least misconstructions) as the gender pay gap, when they have the same statistics available to them in their research as we do, and the truth is not difficult to figure out. Most of America probably is not so much guilty of that as they are simply indoctrinated (and too lazy to do some independent research and to question and to form their own opinions).

ScarJo got harassed about playing a transgender in a future role rather then letting an actual one play the part. She backed out & now it’s reading as though the movie won’t get made.

I guess that’s a win for the transgender community.

      1. Genos Avatar
        Genos

Yeah, and apparently Jack Whitehall is getting harassed for getting cast as a gay guy in an upcoming Disney film. The LGBTQ community are working against themselves more than anything, because I guess everyone has to be typecast as what they identify as now. I never had a problem with gay people playing straight people and straight people playing gay people. But, I guess if this how the logic works, Neil Patrick Harris shouldn't have been allowed to play Barney Stinson on HIMYM since he's not straight.

        1. Knight-Errant Avatar
          Knight-Errant

I agree; cast the best actor/ess for the role. Perhaps ScarJo isn’t the “best” actress for the role; that’s subjective. She’s probably going to be a bigger draw for the movie then a lesser known transgender person.

I’ll be honest, my only interest in Ghost in the Shell was ScarJo. And that was a Netflix view for me.

Supposedly, Pose is a hit for FX, but will the audience for that generate the profit studios would deem a success verses having a known celebrity?

Isn’t part of these types of movies to “humanize” people some are bias toward? Think about movies like Philadelphia for gay people.

Sometimes, I think more people are interested in winning the small battles rather then the war.

Exactly. I can understand if it’s an insensitive interpretation by an actor; like a racial stereotype such as Charlie Chan or Fu Manchu. In today’s world, that wouldn’t even fly.

RDJ took shit for Tropic Thunder because people thought he was mocking African-Americans instead of mocking method actors.

        2. Fred of the Dark Avatar
          Fred of the Dark

The explanation for that is that they're trying to say try not to choose straight actors over LGBT actors when the life experience of the lgbt actor gives then insight into the role...and as a way to help balance the scales from the days when an actor could be called upon to play a gay role, but might be let go or not hired if they were known to BE gay.
On a parallel issue...if the producers of ABC's series "Kung Fu" hadn't cast David Carradine in the starring role of the ½ asian Kwai-chang Caine because they were afraid of alienating a white American audience, they would have had Bruce Lee fer go's sakes! How bone-headed a move is that?

Why do people bag on CW shows so much? I get that they are catering to a certain audience and it's content isn't for everyone. However, to accuse them of casting almost exclusively bad actors has always seemed like a short sighted argument. There are very few actors in those shows that are actually bad. Certainly none of the leads are terrible. Also, to your Oscar point, in general different mediums call for different types of performances. Melissa Benoist has acted in both and she's been great in both while acting appropriately for either medium. People like John Lithgow demonstrate the same ability jumping from stage, to screen, to film. Corny acting isn't bad acting.
