The Oscars are adding a "Best Popular Movie" category for superheroes and blockbusters

Ratings for the Oscars this year were at an all-time low, and they are making some changes to try and fix that for next year. The big one as it pertains to Batman News readers? They're adding a new category for "outstanding achievement in popular film".

You might as well just call this the superhero movie award. DC, Marvel, and Star Wars movies that have been ignored in the past when it comes to the "Best Picture" nominations will almost certainly be nominated now for "Best Popular Movie". A movie like Wonder Woman, which received zero nominations this past year, is a perfect example.

Criteria for what makes a movie eligible for the new "Best Popular Movie" Oscar is still being worked on and will be announced at a later date, but I'd imagine that the box office results will come into play.

There are multiple ways to look at this news. On the one hand, superhero movies will no longer be ignored... but at the same time, it will probably be even harder for a movie to break out of this new category and be nominated for something like "Best Picture". A single movie will be eligible for both categories.

It could be a great addition. I always thought it was unfair that some movies had no shot at the Oscars because of their genre.
I hope box office has nothing to do with it though.

    The reality of the situation is that the Academy has always had an issue with biases, going back to the days when Do the Right Thing got massive rave reviews and then got nominated for basically nothing. That's why they took the unprecedented step of inducting a bunch of younger and more racially diverse Academy members the last few years, to try and cast a wider net on the nominees.
    There are a lot of genuinely great films that don't get any love just because they are genre flicks. Look at Logan. It's one of the best superhero films ever made and got a measly single nomination for best screenplay, which it didn't even win.
    But this isn't the solution. The very title of the category makes it obvious it's something the Academy doesn't consider real art.

      I dont think they nominate movies 50 years after they come out... And its Odyssey. And who cares? The Oscars are a joke anyway. I believe the millions and billions of dollars the movie makes should be their only prize. An Oscar is just industry insiders patting themselves and buddies on the back.

      Be realistic. in every category their are bad movies from all types, but if you go back and look at comparable movie numbers over a decade plus , there is no doubt that comic-book and super-hero movies is what's saving the movie industry. .All he is saying is that for them not to have an opportunity for best picture or leading role based on numbers is an insult.

  Not really, man. If the movie is good they'll nominate it. LOTR is fantasy, Get Out is horror. Sure, it's not the usual, but because standards for those genres are lower. It's about making art, not making money. Until now...

    Get Out was far from a great movie. It's success was mostly due to it's social themes. The movie itself wasn't anything other than good entertainment.
    LOTR was great, but it was a massive work that took many years and it didn't win the best picture award until the 3rd one, which by the way wasn't the best received in the trilogy. The 11 Oscars seemed more like a reward for all the hard work Jackson put all those years.
    I think these are exceptions. The Academy tends to lean to more artistic and dramatic movies. Look at the best picture winners in the last few years. Most of all fall in those styles/categories.

      Of course they will lean toward the artistic movies, that's what they are awarding. And drama is good for that because when it's more low budget and they can focus on quality, not quantity. And a great film has to be good in all aspects not over the top. If you can do both, great, you will be nominated.
      You can't make excuses for those two examples. They did get nominated. for whatever reason but they did.
      I wrote down a bunch of examples below of movies that don't fit into the standard drama category that have been nominated: Avatar, Mad Max, Inception, Toy Story 3, Up, Hugo, Shape of Water, LaLa Land, Martian, Gravity, District 9, Birdman, Grand Budapest Hotel, Inglorious Baterds, Django Unchained... Just in the past 10 years

        They are awarding "best picture". Best means highest quality, and that shouldn't be exclusive to any style or genre.

        And most of those didn't win the award for best picture. The ones that did, fall in the artistic/dramatic category. I'm not saying they can't be nominated, but they will hardly win.
        Look at the winners from the last few years:
        The Shape of Water- Very artistic romantic movie
        Moonlight - Drama
        Spotlight- Drama
        Birdman- Very artistic black comedy movie
        12 Years a Slave- Drama
        Argo- Drama
        The Artist- Drama and very artistic
        The King' Speech - Drama
        You can go all the way back to the 2000's and you'll find mostly dramas.

        You can't belittle my examples by saying they didn't win. They did get nominated which means they have that level of quality and HAVE A SHOT which is what you mentioned originally: having a shot. Getting nominted is having a shot.

        I know, I've agreed to that and told you why: when you make a drama it's less things to worry about and you have more control of the variables, and you can spend more time perfecting it. Its about quality, not quantity.
        Best quality means best story, directing, best acting, best photography, costumes, editing, music, everything combined. It's who put out the best product with less flaws.
        Avatar and LOTR and great examples of doing a big budget movie and make it high quality.
        Also I don't see what's the issue with a "very artistic fantasy- drama or black comedy" That's what it is about, the ART. Art and entertainment are very different sometimes.
        You can't give me more than 3 examples of "entertainment" movies that should've been nominated and didn't. And even then I'm sure they could be debatable.

        On paper yes, but not really, as their chances to win are almost none. Yes, the can get nominated, but the Academy simply won't choose those movies over the dramas. Recent history proves those movies simply never win.

        Quality is subjective. Movies from any genre can be considered high quality, but it's dramas the type of movies the Academy leans towards. I think you would have a hard time finding someone who liked Best Picture winner Argo over a movie like The Dark Knight, which wasn't even nominated for best movie.
        I don't think it's a matter of having less things to worry about either. Ben-Hur and Titanic were both grand scale dramas movies and the most expensive ever made, and they both won 11 Oscars.

        All of those have individual awards. Suicide Squad was horrible and it won one of those. Best picture is usually only linked to the best director award. That category is almost exclusively for dramas.

        Of course they could be debatable because it's 100% subjective, so why should I bother? I've seen countless of movies (including CBM's) that I found to be better than best movie winners like Argo, Birdman, etc.

        Pretty much every award/contest in which a winner is VOTED has nominees/contenders.
        Gravity won 7 Oscars, yet lost the best picture award to 12 years a Slave. Mad Max won 6 Oscars and lost the best picture award to Spotlight. Non dramas can sweep the Oscars and they will still lose the best picture award. LOL, dude it's a facade. So do they have a chance? No, sorry, history proves otherwise.

        Technique has nothing to do with quality and I say that as a musician myself. I've heard shitty songs that are technically difficult, and amazing songs that are easy to play.
        Art is subjective. People are allowed to like Katy Perry over Mozart and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

        All art has theory and technique . And like I said, a better application of those isn't inherent to perceived quality.
        I can write a song with complex chord changes, rhythm, melody, etc. and not like it. I can write a simple 3 chord song and love it.
        Movies are the same. You can have a well structured plot, character development, good acting, etc. and end up with a movie that doesn't connect with the audience at all.
        Sure, there are parameters to what's considered good, but ultimately, it's all subjective. Dramas are just the type of movies the Academy preffers. Nothing more.

    They’re still silly comic book movies. Logan specifically was a classless,ultra violent but very traditional comic book movie.
    People act like it was in some upper echelon level of filmmaking just because it had.m a gritty tone.
    It was as traditional as an action blockbuster gets. Standard good guy vs bad guy film... there was nothing “artsy” about it

    I really disagree. Especially for the year it was in. No movie that year was better than TDK imo. Is it a perfect film? No. But it still was better anything that year and I did see the other Oscar movies.

    I completely disagree with your assessment here. Best Pic Oscars have gone to far worse movies than TDK and many Best Pic Oscar movie noms aren't for near perfect films. The Dark Knight having a stretched third act making it undeserving is the same thing as saying Lotr The return of the King doesn't deserve an Oscar because it also had a stretched out third act. Best Picture noms should go to the best movies of the year and I honestly don't know that there where 5 better movies that year.

      The Dark Knight Trilogy is also a journey but we are talking one movie from each trilogy. The Dark Knight did deserve best Picture nom imo because there were no 5 movies from that year I confidently say were better that year. In fact, the film that ended up winning, Slumdog Millionaire is a worse movie than TDK and it won. There is no doubt in my mind it deserved at least a nomination.

    Dude, the reason of why the best picture category extended to 10 nominees it was because TDK was snubbed.
    And near “perfect movie”? What are you talking about? The year of the dark knight, the reader was nominated instead, which is crazy for me because it was like an average HBO movie, not even a good one (Kate was brilliant and deserved the Oscar btw). In 2011, extremely loud & incredibly close was also nominated and it was a pretty shitty movie.
    Harvey Weinstein did not only harass people, he fucked up the Oscars. He was the one who made it a popularity contest. I’m the 70s the oscars were pretty dope. Look all the nominees. Really good classsics. In the 90s they would ocassionally get it right. Beauty and the beast got a best picture nom, even in the early 00s they were still somewhat credible.

  A lot of people have actually been pushing for performance capture to be a category after the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy. There's been debate about that though since some feel it'd be a slap in the face to the VFX team to give the award to an actor when it'd be part of a collaborative process.

Wow, so instead of actually putting these movies up with classic Oscar type and caliber movies they've effectively made a useless category just to boost popularity. What complete garbage. A movie that deserves an Oscar should be worthy enough to beat other Oscar caliber films not just popular popcorn flicks. With this, a massively overrated film like BP or TLJ can potentially win an Oscar. Blah. They should be ashamed of themselves. This is the equivelant of participation trophy and a very blatant cash/popularity ploy.

The Dark Knight being snubbed for best picture has actually stuck with the Academy for some time as a regret. Nolan wasn’t even nominated for best director. Films like Logan and even Spiderman 2 could have been given more respect than they received.

This is pretty stupid. How are they even going to determine which movie wins? If it's by box office, Star Wars or Marvel is going to win every year. Also, most super hero movies shouldn't even be compared to a lot of the best picture nominated movies, they're just not in the same league.

A best picture nomination doesn't care about genre, popularity money or anything. It's all about the quality of the movie.
Just in the past 10 years there's been nominations like Get Out which is a horror movie, Shape of water which is fantasy-drama (and won), LaLa Land which is a musical, sci fi films like Martian, Gravity and District 9, big block busters like Avatar, Mad Max and Inception, animated movies like Toy Story, Up and Hugo, comedies like Birdman and Grand Budapest Hotel and even 2 Tarantino movies! (Django and Inglorious Basterds)

Kinda dumb to be honest. Basically just a way of getting ratings, shooting down the "popular" movies by giving it pretty much the equivalent of an MTV award, and avoiding complaints for "snubbing" bigger movies.
Granted, the oscars have been VERY hit-or-miss in regards to allowing really good movies to win that are outside political agendas, but there was once two movies that not only snatched up a billion dollars, but still hold the record for most oscars ever won.... They are TITANIC and LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING.
And toss in BEN HUR in there as well since its a part of the billion dollar club as well adjusted for inflation and its tied with LOTR and TITANIC with 11 oscar wins.

Yeah no kidding. That's what happens when pretentious millionaires make everything political and just use it as a platform to talk down to regular, working class people and force their delusional ideologies down everyone's throats.
Ever since the OscarsSoWhite debacle, I have zero interest in the Academy anymore. They have become a joke and they only pander to radical ideologues. Not to mention, I am certain that this move is also political, just so they can nominate movies like Black Panther and Wonder Woman, even though they truly don't deserve it.

  It's not just that. I for one love high art. I listen to classical music as I drive to work, and visit museums at every city I go to. But movies are different. I generally dont want to sit through a 2 hour long story about how someone suffered somewhere sometime. I can read a. Classical book about that, and those tend to be way more impactful. But movies...I go to movies to be entertained. And so does the rest of the world.

    Well, that's on you. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but many people - including myself - do love more grounded, personal, arthouse type films. You say you love classical music, and so do I, so how can you not appreciate the combination of both, like this for example:

    The usage of Albinoni's Adagio is not even subtle. It's basically the entire thing, quite loud and it fits the scene beautifully.
    Besides, movies can be entertaining and incredibly impactful at the same time. Return of the King is a great example. That movie makes you feel all sorts of emotions: joy, sadness, suspense, relief, etc. That is why it won like 12 Oscars or something.

      Clearly it's not just on me, otherwise, those high art movies would jmhave been known. But they are not. I dont know a single person who has even heard of Whiplash. A great movie, but people don't want to see it in theaters. I didn't either, I bought a blue ray. Maybe this is a big part of it - high art needs to be enjoyed alone. The movie theater atmosphere is just not conductive of its vibes.

        Seriously, this is perhaps the best Rach 3 performance I have EVER heard, and I was fortunate enough to witness it live. The atmosphere was fantastic, everybody knew we were watching something truly special.
