Report: Zack Snyder cut of 'Justice League' killed off Cyborg's dad

/Film caught up with actor Joe Morton, who played Cyborg's dad in Justice League, to ask about his role in the DCEU. Morton thinks that a Cyborg movie will begin shooting in 2020, and revealed some interesting details about Justice League that may be part of that solo movie.

“There was [more we shot],” Morton said about his work on Justice League. “They completely changed the story. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you what [the original story] is because that might end up being in part of the Cyborg movie,” Morton added. “Yes, there was a big change once they decided that they were going to do the Cyborg film.”

And what was that big change? According to Vulture reporter Kyle Buchanan, Zack Snyder's original cut of Justice League had Morton's character getting killed halfway through the movie. At the end, Cyborg finds a video from his dad and we hear his monologue play over the final montage. In the theatrical cut, it's Amy Adams reading the lines instead.

        No, he wasnt. And as much as I defend Snyder 90% of the time, the only reason he killed off Jimmy was because they have his third-guy role in the Daily Planet trio to Jenny Jurwich, who literally does nothing but spout a few bits of exposition.

        Lois & Clark he was "Stupid" in? Both Whalin and Landes did a great job bringing that youthful vibrance to the character as well as lending support for both Lois and Clark in their investigations.
        Smallville he was fine in until they ruined it by saying he was "Henry James Olsen". I got sick of his whining and jealousy over Clark, but he was ironically one of the show's better characters in later seasons - especially compared to Lana.
        And again, we wouldn't even be having this conversation if they didn't bring in Jenny as his semi-replacement. If you want to talk pointless, THERE'S your "pointlessness."
        I go out of my way to defend Snyder under normal circumstances, but you will never convince me that this was one of his better ideas.

        whatre you talkin bout? landes or whoever the first guy was played him as the cocky ladys man. he was so irritating. yeah whalin was better but he was still a pointless character.
        he wasnt fine in smallville. i seriously dont get his purpose other than to create a love triangle bw chloe and clark. but i stopped watching the show during the awful seventh season so maybe he got better. but hearing bout that twist kinda makes me doubt it.
        i agree on lana. they tried to make her more than a high school cliche and it just never worked.

        Huh? I never said you were on my "team". I said I usually defend Snyder's choices, but Jimmy's pointless death was not one of them. Nor was his replacement in Jenny, who was originally rumored to be a gender-swapped version of him. As for Pete? Seriously? I like his character, but he's far more pointless than Jimmy. At least Jimmy is usually capable and smart on his own and part of the Daily Planet crew, so it makes sense for Clark to frequently interact with him. Pete? He was one of his Smallville pals that lives halfway across the country that Clark doesn't frequently see. Unless they decided to adapt the President Luthor arc where he becomes vice president, he's far less relevant than Jimmy.
        Landes' version was more than a lady's man. He was also a bit of a hustler, able to pick locks, hotwire cars, and create tech. He invented the signal watch as opposed to Superman giving it to him for instance.
        I liked Whalin a little better too, but he was in the same ballpark in that he was capable and smart, and able to help Lois and Clark in their investigations. He was also even more tech savvy and was crucial in aiding Superman to escape a cybernetic trap.
        I agree about how annoying he was in Smallville with his irritating whining over Clark. Yes, he got better in Season 8, but of course that "twist" ruined it. Smallville overall was a garbage show, but it wasn't completely without its merits. "Clana" was not one of them though. Man of Steel skipping over that nonsense almost made it superior by default.

        and i said i couldnt care less about jimmys death bc hes a dumb character in the comics. giving a popular superhero a friend is one of the stupidest things ive ever heard. at least with shazam it makes sense since hes still a kid.
        pete was his childhood friend and knows hes both clark and superman so yah it makes much more sense. hes not a glorified fanboy turned into a character. we already have plenty of daily planet reporters no need for him. and for hte record i agree the jenny character is stupid too.

        he was crucial bc the writers needed to make superman a pussy in that show. i grew up with so im sympathetic but come on. it was not a good representaiotn of the character.
        eh i disagree bout it bein a garbage show. it was good for the first four seasons when it was about superman in high school. them tryin to extend it past that while still keep him as clark kent was what turned it into a joke.

        If it were just about storytelling, you would agree with me, because doing it in JL is wasted and has no effect or meaning, thus it is not good storytelling.

Hell, from what folks said on Reddit, Silas isn’t even a necessary character. He’s important, but at the same time, not needed for the story. One dude even pointed out that Silas dies very early on in Cyborg’s New 52 run. If he was that important then why kill him off within the first seven issues?

        He's just as important to Cyborg as Alfred is to Batman or Lois is to Superman. Yes, Batman can work without Aflred, just like Superman can work without Lois. But they are still integral parts of their lore. Also, we weren't discussing whether the character can do without him, we were discussing his premature death and irrelevance it had for the story of JL. Huge difference.

        You think if the Russo's kill off Vision and people care, and the same people say they didn't care about Superman in BvS because it was too soon and he wasn't developed enough, that they are hypocrites. Bullshit. The fact is, Vision had more development throughout Avengers 2 - Civil War - Infinity War than Superman did MoS - BvS. Also his emotional connection with Wanda is more human and believable, and far more developed than Lois and Clark's relationship ever was. The difference lies in execution.
        If Vision died in Avengers 2 and barely had any screentime and they forced the Wanda relationship, and people would be fine with that but not Superman in BvS or Silas in JL, THEN you would have a point. THEN the execution would be similar enough to warrant a comparison.
        But the thing is, Feige hasn't thoughtlessly sacrificed characters because he's obsessed with death and misery. He only kills them off when the time is right and in the most appropriate movie.
        Why do you think Peggy died in Civil War, instead of Avengers? Because it made far more sense for Cap's story and development. AGAIN, no one is saying Silas' death can't be impactful, but save such a vital moment for the appropriate time and film.

        Nahh, it's really you who doesn't get it. You're desperate to bring up other studios because you envy their success and still believe in the supposed "anti-Snyder" narrative.
        Killing off Silas in JL would be like killing of Alfred in BvS. Are you really going to tell me there are "other ways to tell stories"? No. It's not about "honoring" the comics. It's about properly developing your characters, REGARDLESS if they were present in the comics. Let's say Snyder killed of Silas and it was his mother that was still alive after the accident. I would say the same thing: it's a mistake to just kill off that character in JL. What purpose would that serve? Does it serve the character? No, it only serves as a cliched "my parents died" subplot (that wouldn't at all affect the overall plot of JL. In other words, it's MEANINGLESS), as if we haven't seen that a billion times before.

        He also kills them because their part in his story is done. Dent's death was necessary and had a huge ripple effect on Batman's world, as seen in TDKR. Bane and Talia could both have been locked up, but with the League's resources, it's better to just kill them off and tie up lose ends. Same with Ra's. It's a "you can't lock up Zod" type of situation. With Joker it's different, he had no followers because of his ideology, he just payed them and that money stopped the second he was arrested. Joker doesn't "need" to die.
        Also, these are all solo movies in which the stories are focused on them. They get more than enough screentime and character development for their deaths to matter and for us to care. With Jimmy Olsen and Silas, Zack just kills them off in movies that aren't about them.
        These people just love to ignore context and reason. We have Schuyler trying to say this is """"good storytelling"""", that is honestly the biggest fucking joke I have ever heard. Silas is one of the most important side-characters for Cyborg, and Zack just kills him off before he even gets his own movie? That is like killing Alfred in BvS halfway through the film.
        I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to kill off these characters, but do it when the time is right and the plot calls for it. When they are developed enough so you care in the first place. Lots of people thought Aflred or Fox was going to die in TDKR, and I'm sure that if that happened, it would have been earned and it would have been very emotional. What happens if Silas dies in JL, after a few seconds of screentime? No one cares.
        And then Schuyler says "why don't you care? Are you telling me you didn't feel sorry for all those people who died in 2012, the movie?"
        Fucking hell, these people are just LAUGHABLE. Their arguments are so ridiculous. End of the day, they just defend it because it's Snyder.

        I mean Nolan gave Bruce a massive gut punch in killing Rachel the only woman he ever loved and would off gave up Batman for. Nolan though doesn't use shock value or shitty writing when killing off his characters. By the way the for the majority of the film Dent was a decent guy so yeah Nolan did kill the good guys, he made sure to get us to like and root for Dent so when his downfall happens it actually works and we care. Its hard to care when Superman dies because the character isn't likable and is on auto pilot when saving people..

  Like, I appreciate the potential to tell an emotional story about them dying and the effect it has on the plot or characters, but there's so much emotional story you can tell with them alive that can bring the long-standing magic of those characters from the books to the big screen. I am absolutely shocked at the people who are outraged over this development. Folks, let's not be a part of the problem.
The problem is that we have all of these superhero movies in which there are NO stakes. We have a Marvel Cinematic Universe wherein nobody ever seems to be truly dead. So why does it matter who lives and dies? Why should we even care? I was so appalled by the ending of the last "Avengers," because it should have been powerful, and yet it wasn't -- because I know that these people will be back. Their deaths carried no weight.
Of all the things I've heard from Snyder's cut, there's only one disagreement I have: Bringing Superman back so quickly. Let people die. Let there be loss. Subvert Hollywood norms and actually kill characters. Enough games.
If you want to become immersed in a universe where important characters never die, watch the most recent seasons of "The Walking Dead" and tell me how intriguing it is.
We could all learn some lessons from Shakespeare. That guy knew what he was doing. Want stakes? Kill your darlings.

    I think for me, it's kind of troubling to see the trajectory that the show is on.
    And it's one thing to say that they occasionally kill off an important character, but it's nowhere near what it used to be. Now we expect a death to occur in a finale or maybe even in a premiere. But in the six episodes between a premiere and finale (or midseason finale), things tend to slow way down. And the finale for this season was so anticlimactic.
    I used to love the show, but it's starting to lose me. I thought that Negan would come in and prove himself to be a worthy nemesis for Rick and the gang. Instead, he's barely killed anyone. He killed off Glenn and Abraham, and suddenly everyone was outraged. Suddenly, TWD was sadistic and immoral... Even though this is fiction... It was absurd. But the showrunners, inexplicably, gave in to the demands of a vocal, sensitive minority. Since then, the show has been far less brutal than it was in that episode, and Negan's kind of been neutered. And that's the issue I have. He's just going to let people live -- or fail to kill them off when he tries? There's an element of unpredictability that a show like "Game of Thrones" has, and TWD used to have that to a greater degree than it does now. Now, it often feels like it's become trapped in mainstream TV cliches.

      I can sort of see how it is getting a bit slower compared to how it was before, yeah, but I think Negan definitely did prove himself. It’s not just all about deaths. Throughout the show his cruelty has always been shown to be about much more than just killing people. He’s a highly fascinating character who was also brilliantly portrayed by JDM, a master manipulator and the quintessential bully, yet disturbingly likable. I don’t think he was neutered or that the writers necessarily gave into anything, but that his character has simply been carefully planned from the beginning and this is how he is. It’s been an interesting ride peering into his psyche and witnessing his rise and fall, and that’s really what TWD has always been about: the people.

      But as for the ending being anticlimactic, I cannot disagree with you more. I absolutely adored that finale.       And I hope you understand I mean no disrespect, by the way. I’m just interested about your thoughts, and I know you are intelligent and that we in some ways have very similar tastes, so I thought this was worth discussing.

        It's about not wasting great potential. It's about not blowing your load. It's about properly developing your characters, instead of turning them into a cliched plot devise in a team-up film.
        It has fuck all to do with "muh comic book accuracy". It has everything to do with actually taking the time to build a universe filled with characters you actually care about, instead of killing them all off before you get the chance to know them.

        Considering that Hunter and kan just explained some of the stuff that Silas did in the comics, and even the folks on Reddit explained in greater detail, I have basic understanding of Silas’ role. This is how easy it is nowadays to find out about comics and characters without actually having to read the comics.
        As these two gentlemen on Twitter had said:
        “They will always say, "They didn't spend enough time building up the characters for me to care about them, so the stakes are meaningless". Even though they KNOW this is NOT how storytelling works. If that were the case you would never be able to tell a single film story.
        “Someone complained that they didn’t care about the Wayne’s death because we didn’t get to know them in the film. Like, when people we don’t know die in real life, we’re sad about it. So why’s it different in film? Someone died. That’s enough to get a response either way.”
        I’m pointing out how the MCU is able to freely deviate from the source material, but you and others get pissy whenever Snyder says “Nah, I wanna do this instead”.
        Seriously if you need multiple films to care about a man who turned his son into a “freak” in order to save him, then that’s on you.
        That was an example of a filmmaker adding his own spin. You have Barry dying in his very first film. Talk about “wasted potential”, and folks here said that the film would’ve been 10x better than what we got from Snyder.

Justice League is a TEAM UP film, that introduces a ton of big characters we'd never seen before, and as such, side-characters like Silas and Lois were pretty much ignored.         That’s only bad if you’re acting as if the dead person was a close family member of yours. It’s not bad to feel a bit sympathetic whenever you see a death on the news. People do this all the time. It’s basic human nature. “Oh that’s sad that the person. Well, time to change the channel and see what’s on sports tonight.”
        Sigh. So because they’re fictional, I shouldn’t feel sad at seeing these characters die, despite not knowing a thing about them. Man, I was so wrong when I had watched 2012, and felt sad for all those people dying who weren’t main or supporting characters.

The more I hear about Snyder’s plans, the more I’m convinced that WB and the DCEU need to come out and officially remove BvS, JL and SS from the DCEU canon. Only WW and MoS should be spared. WW will be spared because it’s good and MoS should be spared because there’s enough in that film to salvage for a better sequel.

    I can understand that. But I think there’s enough to salvage for further use. Out of all of Snyder’s DCEU work, it’s the most watchable and cohesive by far.
    A great director could come in and make a great sequel out of MoS. There was no such hope for something like BvS.

        I don't find that offensive. I've heard many people saying DC characters are too powerful to be relatable, but I don't care as I know that isn't true. I've seen great DC movies, TV shows, games, etc. Like I said, it's just a point of view and they were specifically asked about it.
        Calling Ant-Man the flavor of the week was more offensive. Imagine the Russos saying "We're making The Avengers, not some flavor of the week Cyborg film". See how condescending and belittling that sounds?
        Snyder wasn't even asked about Ant-Man, he just brought it up to elevate his own movie, and the funny thing is that BvS ended up being the flavor of the week with a 70% second weekend drop, and was barely more profitable than Ant-Man.

        No, that's a lot different. There are many different ways to express one idea. "You're so silly" is not the same as "you're stupid". Even though the idea is similar, one sounds a lot more offensive than the other.
        Perhaps you don't get it because english is not your first language, but the way you worded it makes it sound more offensive than what the Russos said. Especially the "we're making"..."not some". That way of wording it sounds a lot more condescending.

Not surprised. There's a whole section missing from the movie that was in the trailers that related to a fight at Star labs taking place - presumably after the League deals with the confused Superman (and would explain why they wouldn't just leave the motherbox lying around unprotected for Steppenwolf to conveniently grab unopposed).
There's also a moment in the second trailer where we see Cyborg crying that was absent in the movie. And what else could make him weep but the death of his father?

  And that's fine because Nolan's trilogy was self contained and had a definite end in mind. We were supposed to get a Cyborg movie when JL was being made. Silas is the closest thing Cyborg has to a supporting cast. You don't kill him off right as you're about to make a Cyborg movie.
  People keep talking about how exploring the strained father and son relationship would've been interesting...ya know, kinda like the stuff that would work well in a solo Cyborg flick! ;)

  Snyder killed Jimmy Olsen, Dick Grayson and Silas without ever allowing the audience to get to know them. He also killed Superman way too early, before it could have a great impact on the audience.
