Man of Steel 2: Everyone at Warner Bros. knows how important Superman is, says Geoff Johns

Earlier this week Collider posted part of their interview with Geoff Johns from San Diego Comic-Con where he talked about Green Lantern Corps, but today they posted their entire 20 minute conversation where he also talked about Man of Steel 2, Wonder Woman 1984, Aquaman, and more.

On the topic of Man of Steel 2, Johns admitted that in his new role he's not really at liberty to talk about potential projects that may be in the works for the future, but he did assure fans by letting them know that everyone at Warner Bros. agrees that Superman is an important character in the DC universe.

"Look, working with [DC Films President] Walter Hamada and [Warner Bros. Chairman] Toby [Emmerich] over there at [Warner Bros.], they feel the same way. Everyone loves Superman and knows how important Superman is," Johns explained.

"It’s not in my wheelhouse now to really say anything beyond that but... I got into this business because of Superman: The Movie, because Dick Donner directed what I think is still an amazing superhero film but an amazing film — it’s an American film, it’s a classic."

There's been a lot of rumors about Henry Cavill and the future of Superman. Some say we may see him in a cameo in Shazam, others say he's currently in contract negotiations to extend his deal so that he can keep playing Superman in solo movies and beyond.

If what Johns says is true and Warner Bros. considers Superman important, hopefully it won't be too long before we know exactly what they have planned for him.

    I felt like they left Batman and Superman's relationship off in a great place for a World's Finest film where they become friends and proper allies as they get to know and respect each other finally.
    Would make sense to do that next if only we knew what was going on with Ben.

  I think Henry Cavill really wants to be James Bond and he was so close to getting the part but the producers chose Daniel Craig instead. A role like Bond doesn't come around often and he already played Superman in three films. Being James Bond will be a huge breakout role for him. I want him to do both.

Geoff Johns shouldn't be involved with other DC movies/series, he ruins every cinematographic stuff he touch: Green Lantern 2011 and Justice League 2017, and now Titans "F*ck Batman". It's sad to see how his CB cult still praise him for "secretly" writing Wonder Woman, like if no one else was involved for this movie's writing.         Trinity War was designed to set up Forever Evil what was fantastic. He still writes fantastic stuff, DC Rebirth is a classic and one of the best comics in years and The Doomsday Clock has been fantastic and does a great job at expanding the Watchmen while crossing it with the DCU, he's already made two instant classic characters in it who everything reading it loves.

        DC Rebirth was mainly Johns and its his story and ideas, you need to read Wally in it to knows its Johns.
        Considering how delayed TDC is all the time (not Johns fault bu the artist Gary Frank's fault as his art takes a long time to do) you might be better off and waiting for the Tradeback what collects it all. At least that way you will hear opinions on the whole story rather then just half of it and can read it all at once if you wish.

    Already told you before, it's not a secret, this how I choose my CB:
    1. Batman
    2. Superman
    3. Justice League (including his new52)
    ... always by arc, and date of appearance: older to newer arcs.
    So yes I don't read most of the stuff you do like Flash related CB (even if I like the character, my third favorite DC character). But I've acted intelligently since I have started to read the stuff that people praise him the most: his GL, from the beginning with Green Lantern Secret Files and Origins, Green Lantern: Rebirth, and even Sinestro Corps which is considered as his best stuff. I just don't understand why people defend him so much, his Green Lantern movie for example, really faithful to what I read in his CB, but the movie felt bad despite having a great director like Martin Campbell, a great actor like Ryan Reynolds. Why is this man always involved with average quality movies? It cannot be a coincidence.

        LMAO. 95% of Snyder movies where badly reviewed by critics and of all kinds whether RT or Metacritic. MOS was trash, it destroyed Superman. And the fact that Goyer and Snyder changed how Jonathan died in the movie compared to the comics is bad enough itself. Geoff Johns is also co-writing WW84, Aquaman and Shazam and those two are based on his comics.

        I don't see this as indicative of much, as even Chris Nolan has absolutely nothing - not even announced projects - on his upcoming queue as per IMDB.
        I take that back; it looks like he's doing an 'original screenplay' version of Memento?
        Still, that's the same number of projects Zack has going that we know of.

        If you comparing him against Nolan, just look at Nolans body of work vs Snyders. Wasn't Nolans last movie Dunkirk nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Picture? Snyder's last film, if you don't count JL, was BvS. It won 4 awards, as it took home 4 Razzies. LMAO

        No one is perfect, and he's done enough amazing work that I can forgive bumps in the road - especially if it's hard to tell if he even was the one responsible for those bumps in the first place. It's probably much more complicated than that.
        I say give him a fair shot here. He seems passionate and dedicated, and like he's listening patiently and open-mindedly to the issues fans have had.

        He doesn't look really open-minded since he's stuck with Christopher Reeves' Superman. He desires something impossible by following the same pattern than Superman Returns but with his mentor's Superman 1978's success.
        Everybody can like him for his CB, but his movies look like big budget CW shows. He's either a really unlucky man with his cinematographic track record or he's just bad when it's cinematographic related stuff.

        I'll agree with you that Green Lantern wasn't as amazing as it should have been, but it's hardly just 'his movie'. There were a lot of other hands involved in shaping and steering that film; some way may never be aware of.
        One thing we don't share in common is the idea that the CW shows are shitty. Like anything else, it has it's flaws, but I've been very much enjoying Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.

        I didn't miss one episode of The Flash, I enjoy each of those episodes because they have their moments. But even if I close my eyes on the effects because I recognize TV budget, those CW remain bad: too much babycries, shitty stories, shitty logics (beyond comics), shitty relationships (the love triangle with Barry/Iris/Eddie was utterly aweful), shitty lines ("We are the Flash", "I have to run faster", "Run Barry run!"), it repeat itself so much they memefy themselves... people seem to be too much attached to those series they watch over and over and over again nowadays.

      Sorry, LOL, your hatred for Johns is cute, but he had such a minor role in editing the film, along with several others, that you can't blame him for its failure. It was mostly the WB execs...again. But even Reynolds said publicly that none of the actors who auditioned for the role had a script to read...which he then compared to Deadpool which had a script that started back 3 years.
      The writing was the problem...
      "Additionally, Michael Goldenberg was brought in to rewrite the script by
      Berlanti, Green, and Guggenheim - having previously wrangled the most unwieldy Harry Potter tome The Order Of The Phoenix into one of the zippiest scripts of that franchise, it also seems like the writer was brought in to rein things in."
      It still didn't save the film. The WB execs kept melding, heavily into the editing process. At one point they cut the film off because it went over budget and instead of having the Green Lantern Corps vs Parallax at the end, there wasn't enough $$ for the CGI, so they used Hal vs Parallax...the rest is history.

        You say that that there wasn't a script to read, who produced a movie without a script despite being its main writer in CB?

Side note i saw the new Mission Impossible today and its fucking amazing and one of the best films i've seen this year and easily the best MI film. Cavill was fantastic in it as well.

  He was my fancast back before Man of Steel, and he's certainly lived up to my dreams despite the rocky way things have played out. So much potential is still left, and he's got the oomph to meet that head-on and even surpass it.
  Love the natural hair as well. :) I preferred it in MoS over BvS.

        I'm doing the inflation calculations for Superman Returns and Man of Steel right now, and it looks like...
        78 - $1,160,301,198.43
        Returns - $488,830,151.24
        MoS - $722,623,153.78
        So yeah, MoS was definitely the highest grossing Superman film in decades. It almost doubled Returns' money, which actually surprises me as I thought MoS was more controversial and divisive.

        Mos was released in an era where superhero movies peeked, therefore people expected it to be a box office hit, since he's one of the most famous/first superhero. It had potential to make more, but the movie didnt have good legs/wom and underperformed, just like BvS who opened with 420m(bigger than Bp) and only made an additional 450m in the remaining 3 months. The movies underperformed drastically.

        Superman 1978 made 300m ww, adjust it for inflation and you got over 1b, with only 700 screens,compared to mos with 4000 screens.

        We could also consider that, at the time, Superman was sitting in a
        special position in movie history compared to Man of Steel, having the superhero stage virtually to himself and breaking ground for the genre with the whole 'You'll believe a man can fly' tagline and the way they took the story seriously by that day's standards, so people were automatically dazzled.
        Stack that up against Man of Steel's circumstances, where the stage was already crowded by Marvel, who had quickly become the pop culture darling - a pop culture who had turned on Superman, mind you - and the fact that the The Dark Knight set the standard so high that even Rises got hate for not being the second coming of Christ, and MoS looks like a severe underdog here.
        Considering that context, I think it did pretty well.
        There are
        countless factors, and many that tend to be overlooked, so that's why I tend to take the box office argument pretty lightly in this case. It's near-impossible to fully scientifically analyze it.
        I just appreciate that Superman got the measure of success he managed to get in both cases, because I love the character and want to see him continue to inspire people. :)

    That may well be true, but the following films proved to be divisive with general audiences and for the most part tainted the superman brand moving forward with snyder. Studios are all about those future projections as to whether a movie or franchise of movies will be successful and between BvS, Suicide Squad, and JL no wonder WB has seemingly abandoned moving forward with whatever the DCEU was/is.

    Transformers is a sucessful franchise, doesn't mean the movies are good.
    As someone that enjoyed MoS the fact is, despite box-office success it's a divisive movie. While subjectivity alone is enough to defend it, the reality is it didn't connect with with all of it's audience and BvS was partially a response to that.

        I mean, that could be possible, but I'm just responding to the quote you're interpreting the slam from here.
        I think what he said is pretty straight-forward, and is about his inspiration as a younger man. Donner had a huge, even formative impact on him. Not just via the Superman movie, either, though that was obviously a major part.

        I completely agree about his admiration for Donner. I also don't think that is the only reason he said it. And if you have read the quotes of him telling the studio execs his concerns with MoS, you know he was no fan of Synders.

        I know it's been said that he wanted the tone of MoS to be lighter and more humorous, and they decided not to go that way, but I dunno if that makes him anti-Snyder. Is there drama beyond that that I'm not aware of?
        Either way, I just don't think this is a loaded quote, that's all. I'm not saying he necessarily doesn't have issues with Snyder's choices in general.

        The last I heard from Cavill on the Zod-killing thing was an interview the other day where he said he'd love to follow up on the thematic evolution of Superman feeling remorse for killing Zod and wanting to never kill again because of it; he liked the idea of portraying that growth in him toward a brighter place.
        Found the snippet from Henry just here and have been (patiently) keen to see exactly what he describes ever since MoS:
        “The killing of Zod would have led to a wonderful reason why Superman never kills. Not, he never kills just because his dad said so one day. He made the decision himself because of an impossible scenario, to which he then said, ‘I don’t care if it’s impossible again, I’m gonna find a way to make it possible in the impossible.’”
        The move toward a DC Universe meant “we didn’t get the opportunity to show the other side of it, the ‘I’m ready to be Superman now and I’m ready to show the world the best examples’. That’s where the joy and glee comes from, and that sense of warmth from the character, which is his real superpower – he makes people believe in themselves. It was a shame because it would’ve been nice, and it would have been a lovely coupling with the seriousness and the depth of Man of Steel.”

He was always there for all the tours and actively engaging in interviews and things, filled the DVD extras talking about MoS story and such, etc. I don’t buy the PR he only retroactively started pumping out after BvS got its backlash. He also said JL was one of their first movies with the new flavor they were going for, if I recall correctly. Was his involvement with that real or just PR too? Who knows, but it’s hard to rely on anything he says about the quality of these movies and their stories, since he really has been there since the beginning involved in some capacity with all of them.

        Since I like Henry Cavill, I watch most of his interviews. He's a business man who just say what he has to say. He praises the guys he works with, Zack Snyder and even Joss Whedon, then it's up to your interpretation.

      I personnally don't like the actor chaging in the same universe (Rachel Dawes, Bruce Banner, Rodney...).
      And don't like when they reboot a franchise in a short period of time (Sam Raimi's Spider-Man to Marc Webb's).
      Plus I'm biased since I love Henry Cavill in Man of Steel.
      Think about all those people who think the same for one of those.

        Except the whole argument here is that this betrays the comics character. Yet the very comics this is based on do that. Much worse, even the live action adaption Superman II shows Superman killing Zod at the end, and, unlike MoS, without remorse. Yet there are only complaints about MoS. It’s called a double standard.

DC films don't work like the MCU. Feige gets a crew of writers to write a script and then he goes and find a competent but not an established director to make the movie. The one exception was Shane Black.
DCF allows the director to shape the script. The reason we haven't seen a MoS2 movie is because no director have stepped up with a good pitch.

All I want is a really timeless, classic Superman movie that is full of joy, humor, warmth and bright colors with Henry Cavill as the hopeful, optimistic, smiling golden standard of superheroes that fans know and love. Make it modern with state of the art visuals and dazzling spectacle but throw grimdark, moral questioning and all the depression, self hating, doubt and emotional torment out the window.
Doesn't have to be deep and complex. All I need is a feel good , fun and uplifting Superman saving the world, inspiring everyone around him to be better then they think they can be.
Just for once DC/Warner stop with the "different" and just give me SUPERMAN.

I really hope they make another Superman movie with Cavill. Call it Man of Steel: Rebirth. Show him embracing hope and connect with the people. I think that beginning Superman cut scene in JL was great (minus the lip thing), but it should have been at the very end of the movie.

    Probably the two deleted scenes they had on the bluray release. But other than that definitely the fight between the JL and Superman. That was awesome. I also really liked when he was working with Cyborg to split the motherboxes, they both mention how they want to live. Which was also a great moment for an under used Cyborg.

Superman importance to the world of comics in general is unmatched simply for being the first 'superhero'.
Superman on TV has had various levels of success.
Donner's Superman importance like the comics is largely due to it's legacy, meanwhile it took 19 years before he returned to big screen and Snyder's Supes is divisive at best.
DC Comics has a stable of great characters that aren't Batman or Supes and the success of Wonder Woman and the Arrowverse have proven their worth with general audiences.

  It's a different environment though. In the movie/tv business they have contracts and they can't really go into detail unless they got the green light to do so. If they just spoiled everything all the time you could get fired. Also possibly blacklisted so other companies know not to hire you. There's also the possibility that he also doesn't know what is going on. Depends how you interpret his comment. "It’s not in my wheelhouse now to really say anything beyond that"
