'Justice League' VFX reel shows deleted footage of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, and more

Justice League came out last November, but new footage that didn't make the theatrical cut is still finding its way online. We saw a deleted shot of Wonder Woman a couple of weeks ago, and now another video has surfaced that features even more footage.

Guido Zanni is a visual effects artist at MPC and shared a reel of some of the work that he did on the movie. There's new footage of Cyborg, and possibly Wonder Woman, but the coolest thing to me was the new Batman footage. It's quick, but at the 1:40 mark in the video above we see a parademon charging towards Batman. He uses the demon's momentum against him and tosses him to the ground. This was in the movie, but it looks like a slightly extended take here.

Many Justice League scenes were trimmed or removed entirely in order to streamline the story and satisfy Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara's two hour mandate. Two deleted scenes were included on the Blu-ray, and both featured Henry Cavill as Superman.

I wish Batman wasn't a complete joke in JL and could actually fight like he did in BvS, Snyder got a load of things wrong with Batman in BvS but at the very least his Batman was a true force to be reckoned with who you really wouldn't want to mess with. In JL though he struggled with the thug in the opening, had at least 3 JL members push him about and could barely deal with Parademons.

    They didn't call it unwatchable and fire Snyder for no reason. Even Affleck said Whedon improved it:
    “We got lucky, we had [Joss Whedon] come in who kind of worked off Zack’s template, and also added his own flavor and his own stuff to it, and I think made the movie better,”
    So yeah, rumors, interviews, etc. suggest Snyder's cut was worse.

It still looks like a cheap video game. Also, nothing changes the fact that this horrendous Steppenwolf design is Zack Snyder's idea. Making him CGI vs. an actual actor with prosthetic makeup was/is the dumbest decision. He can't get away from using CGI on his villains.

Not really. Makes sense to make him look more like a big monstrous alien since that’s what he’s supposed to be, and allows for a quick explanation for Darkseid’s appearance without having to go into a whole bunch of lore. I would’ve liked something a bit closer to how he looked in BvS, though. That one looked better. A mixture would have probably been best.

  Steppenwolf like most New Gods though looks more more less human, if Snyder wanted his CGI fetish he should have chosen Kalibak as it would have made more sense. Him looking different to Darkseid no one would actually care about at all, hell a simple throw away line could explain like "you different to Darkseid" and then Darkseid says "not all Gods look the same", there done easy and everyone would be happy.

Said it many times. Steppenwolf should have been an actor in a costume. There's no reason for a character that looks like man in an armor to be a full CGI monster. Dumb fanboys kept saying "it makes sense cuz he's a demon from hell". And then we ended up with a dumb and video game-ish CGI villain.

    Yeah, even if they went practical with him, Steppenwolf would've still had the same dialogue and screentime that he had in the theatrical cut. It's like people forget about this, and instead focus on "I told you he would've better if he wasn't CGI". And they also forget about his first appearance in the film. He looked menacing. He acted menacing. He was a serious threat at first.

      It's the filmmakers' job to anticipate that and to come up with something that the audience will like. A good filmmaker will often succeed at that. Like I said it's all about creativity.
      Also, Zack Snyder seems to do whatever he wants. He doesn't seem to care much whether the audience will reject something. I think SW looked the way he looked because Snyder loves CGI monsters and thought he would look cool.

Funny that you complain, because most of the footage in the video is from the reshoots, and because of the reshoots they had to rush the post production of the movie to met the release date not only from the new scenes but from the old ones too, no senseless butchering of the movie, no rushed cgi kid :)

i dont think CGI was a terrible idea. The design itself wasn't really bad imo. It was the CGI that was lacking. I actually thought he looked pretty cool personally. But I thought it was an interesting mix between the more humanoid look of the new gods combined with a few otherwordly features make him seems a tad more alien and god like. He didn't even look that much like a monster tbh. He was just tall and gray skinned.

Zod was CGI too (no joke, his costume is full CGI), and CGI was unnoticeable.
Even if you don't like Doomsday's face, his CGI was good too.
The trully ugly CGI villain is Steppenwolf, because his original "Alien" version is frightening and much better. But I think WB interfered here in order to make a more family movie like MCU.

    JL was awful, if you dont take into account all the technical flaws it has on the surface like bad pace, bad editing, bad music, bad jokes, and actors looking different from one shot to the next among other issues, what you have is a mediocre generic and forgettable Avengers ripoff with no soul, it can be judged as a movie because it was released as such, and in that case it is safe to say that both whedon and warner made a BAD movie.

      I rewatched Iron Man 2 recently after some years and was pleasantly surprised how much of it I enjoyed on the second go.
      It's worth it for RDJ's performance and Tony's character stuff (particularly with Pepper). My only real gripes with IM2 or IM3 are the villains, and even then it's more wasted potential than 'outright garbage' as some would insist. Everything else was fine-to-great for the most part.
      Justice League isn't purely bad or purely good. It's got a jumbled-up mix of really awesome moments with a lot of cringe in between, and it drops the ball on character development almost completely thanks to the sweeping cuts and changes. The good stuff makes me want to forgive the bad, but the bad is so inexcusable that it makes the complete product feel like a train wreck that had every reason to be amazing instead. Very frustrating.

  I just want this to go away actually. I would love to see his cut but they have to move on from this disaster. Worse. WB still has zero news to give any of their fans regarding anything DC films related. Aquaman, due in 5 months, zero news from WB.

Lots of mid-stage renders that would probably need to be smoothed out before release.

But also, once you've trained your mind to believe that https://youtu.be/we_eTOeNSE... looks real, pretty much anything CGI, particularly blink-and-you'll-miss-it shots in a movie, doesn't present a believability problem at all.

maybe they will release the zack snyder version of the justice league movie in the dc universe streaming service for the same price as the regular blue ray justice league movie. in my opinion that would be a brilliant marketing move...for the dc universe streaming service

im just a fan of DC Comics but in my opinion the visual effects in DCEU films going forward still needs to be better than that video reel especially if the visual effects artist Guido Zanni is going to continue doing the visual effects for DCEU films. With constructive criticism i will say this, after watching the Justice League movie i think Steppenwolf, the Cyborg and other scenes appeared as though it were very good for a current gen console video game, but for a current generation big budget box office superhero film, it needs to be better than that. Steppenwolf and the Cyborg's overall form was depicted accurate in the film, but the fit, finish, definition and detail didn't look acceptable to me. Maybe Guido Zanni needs more resources, i dont know but if that person works on any other DCEU films there needs to be access to better visual effects.

Its so frustrating that VFX in JL was so patchy. Majority of Steppenwolfs scenes looked cheap. But I tip my hat to the animators here. The shot at 1"13' is genuinely quite impressive. Its a shame the whole movie wasn't on that level of detail,
