Zack Snyder shares photo of Henry Cavill's Superman with a red/blue umbrella

As he's done recently, Zack Snyder celebrated "Throwback Thursday" (#tbt) with a new behind-the-scenes photo from one of the DC movies that he directed. This time it was Batman v Superman and he showed Henry Cavill as Superman holding a red and blue umbrella.

"#tbt to the color of the umbrella matters," Snyder captioned his photo on Vero. Snyder has a great eye for easter eggs and paying attention to small details in his movies, and the umbrella that Superman star Henry Cavill had on set was no different.

Stay tuned next Thursday, where Snyder will hopefully share a photo of Ben Affleck as Batman with a black and grey umbrella.

      He is not alone. Every time I see a "new behind-the-scenes" photo from Justice League or especially Batman v Superman, it feels odd at best. These movies were not successful. No photos, found footage, or director's cut will change that.

Watchmen is one of the best, if not the best superhero movie ever made, sadly BVS wasn't, maybe one of the worst. Love Zack Snyder movies in general, though the DCEU ones are very lackluster.

  It's funny, I hear this a lot, but I kind of have the reverse feeling - except I don't think Watchmen is one of the worst. I just find myself picking a lot more problems out of Watchmen, and the things that were sacrificed to make the transition to film were important to me.
  The difference is that one is an adaptation of a singular piece with a very specific purpose (Watchmen), where the other is one of countless artistic re-interpretations of a thing that has been changing form and evolving and experimenting for decades.
  So Watchmen had a lot more responsibility to adhere to a sort of 'Gospel' compared to BvS, and it didn't properly strike at the points that Alan Moore framed the entire book around. Instead feels more like a spectacular tribute with an excessive focus on being gorey and edgy at the expense of losing an important chunk of the story's soul.
  BvS, on the other hand, while missing some things fans wanted to see or perhaps doing things fans were uncomfortable with, takes a deep, long, loving, thoughtful look at the characters and does something special and meaningful with them in my opinion, even if it's unorthodox (so was TDK Returns at the time, and Burton's Batman too).
  To my personal tastes, BvS is the better of the two movies. It's much more emotionally resonant with me, anyway, and more thought-provoking and challenging than Watchmen.
  Still, I do love Watchmen for what it was. Snyder clearly loved the book, and he did close to the best he could with the limitations he had while putting his own twist on it. The shot framing and use of slow-mo was like sipping on a fine wine. haha

Haha I was waiting for someone to catch the URL.
The truth is, I’ve always tried to cover everything. Big and small, even since the Dark Knight Rises days. These days it’s considered “clickbait”, which I’ll never understand. I cover DC news. Set photos are exciting, no matter how big or small. Plus most people aren’t on Vero, so this is a way to bring that content to fans who wouldn’t have seen it.

MoS: Not one smile to a person he saved not named Lois or Martha. Superman is supposed to be likeable to almost all people, not just his loved ones.
BvS: Didn't say one word to any of the victims he saved. Superman often talks to his victims.
All in all, there was not one single scene in both MoS or BvS where Superman both smiled and talked to the victims. Everytime he saved someone he was either mute, or didnt smile at all.

    He's also still new to this, and still under a lot of scrutiny and suspicion, as well as concerned about this huge decision he's made that he's been conflicted about since childhood, so he may understandably feel a little shy about that sort of thing for now.
    The idea, as you know, was to have his death and rebirth create a sense of trust from the entire world in him, and a sense of confidence and peace in Clark himself, which would lead to him being more warm and open in his mannerisms.
    But the audience just couldn't be patient and let them carve out an arc, so now it's been cut short and the payoff is deflated and butchered. :/ Sad.

      It's not about 'need' so much as 'intend'. It was a slow burn, and that's something I enjoy in movies, but is clearly not palatable to the wider audience these days.
      Hell, Luke didn't even become a proper Jedi until some time after his third movie, and that happened off-screen. His general character growth arc took three movies, and I enjoyed that.

      That's a bad excuse for a lack or arc.
      Look at TDK trilogy. Batman had a major arc where he goes from becoming Batman (BB), to questioning Batman's existence and ethics (TDK), to retiring and coming back one last time and then finally retiring for good (TDKR).
      But even though it took 3 movies for Batman to go from point A to point C, he still had great character development and a clear arc in each one of the movies. Batman begins showed us everyting we need to know about Batman: His motivations, his ideals, his personality and his growth as a character. Same for WW. Even if Diana was just getting started, her inner journey and motivations were crystal clear.
      MoS on the other hand didn't give us any of that.
      We see a Superman who wants to find out who he is because someone else told him to. Then he finds who he is and becomes Superman because, again, someone else tells him to (the symbol of hope thing was Jor-El's ideal). Then he saves the world, which is great, but he was already saving people at the beginning of the movie. So he doesn't really change along the movie. Not to mention he's a character without much personality, unless he's with Lois or Martha.
      MoS pretty much failed to show us Superman's inner journey; to establish who he is, what he wants, what drives him. That's what origin movies are for: for the audience to get to know a character. And BvS didn't do any better regarding Superman's arc.
      So no, it's not a matter of being patient. If you're a good filmmaker you will make sure that the audience enjoys every step of the way. You can't have dull characters and expect the audience to care for them because in some other movie you will see them grow.

      Man of Steel was basically Batman Begins for Superman.
      You say that he's being told to do what he does, but really, he's just like Bruce in Begins, looking for various father figures to help him find the way to do what he very obviously already wants to do.
      He saves those kids on the bus because he can't help feeling like he needs to do what he can when people are in danger. This is the opposite of what he was told to do, so your point doesn't really hold here. He seeks and heeds advice or direction, but that's also a huge part of Bruce's journey in Begins, between Ra's, Alfred, Gordon, Lucius, Rachel, Thomas Wayne, etc.
      They were clearly replicating that formula of telling the origin, even down to the use of flashbacks and flashforwards, with the final act resulting in the death of the enemy personifying the ideological yang to the hero's yin.
      Funny that, in Begins, Batman was pretty merciless and deliberate about it, but Superman in MoS only went that far because he was left with no choice, and it tore him up inside immediately after. Yet one movie gets a total pass but the other more sympathetic and desperate one gets all this hate. ;p
      Anyway, I don't know how or why you've overlooked or dismissed it, but it was there. The whole movie heavily illustrates his heart and drive. I thought it was beautiful. If you like Batman Begins' origin storytelling, Man of Steel's should be right up your alley.

      Superman doesn't know what he wants when he starts his journey other than finding out who he was because that's what Pa Kent told him to do.
      Bruce knew exactly what he wanted before Ra's trained him: "I seek the means to fight injustice. To turn fear against those who prey on the fearful."
      That's a clear motivation, something Superman did not have.
      Saving people isn't an ideal, it's a plot reaction. He saves people who are in danger the same way any other good/brave citizen would, but that doesn't imply an ideal. Helping others doesn't mean you want to dedicate your life to do so. You can help your neighbour who's about to drown in his pool, but that doesn't mean you want to become a lifeguard.
      And about them killing, Bruce was very clear about his ideals: "I will not become an executioner" and he does not.
      Superman killed Zod with his bare hands. OK that itself isn't bad, although it's very controversial considering the nature of the character. Problem is that it turned out to be completely pointless. Snyder wanted to explain Superman's aversion for killing, yet killing Zod was never even adressed in BvS. In fact Superman's postion on killing is exactly the same: kill if you have no other choice. So why make him kill if it didn't even grow as a character?

      He does know what he wants. He just doesn't know if it's the right thing to do. The movie makes it clear. He wants to help people, just like Bruce wants justice.
      Obviously Clark is in a special position to dedicate his life to doing so compared to an ordinary person, and it's what he yearns to do in large part because he recognizes his gift can be used for that.
      If you diminish MoS in this case, you also have to diminish BB.

      If condemning a man to death when he could have saved him jives with Batman's moral code to you, I won't stop you from feeling that way. I personally enjoyed the scene.
      Talia does interpret this as an execution later, of course, so I enjoy that it comes back to bite him. It's an important lesson about unforeseen ramifications.

      It was the symbolic culmination of everything leading to his birth as a protector; it cemented him on the path he chose in one dramatic moment. He committed fully to protecting innocent people by doing so, even if it meant doing something terrible that he didn't want to do, resulting in the death of the last of his biological kind.
      It shows who he has chosen to become after all of his inner conflict, and the cost it can bear. Whether you consider that growth or not is on you, but I think it would be petty not to, and either way it's still a functional part of the story that happened for a reason (not that everything has to be necessary to happen in a movie), so I don't see the problem.

      Again, wanting to help in a particular situation doesn't mean that's what you want to do with your life. Bruce was clearly dedicating his life to fight injustice. He lived with criminals to understand them. He knew exactly what he was looking for and what he wanted in life.
      Superman isn't looking for anyting other than finding out who he is when he begins his journey. That was his goal. His goal was not to become a symbol of hope. He follows that ideal after Jor-El encourages him to.

      One of my favorite moments in Man of Steel was when Superman is devastated that he had to do that, so it's a bummer they didn't explore it more later (especially with the Doomsday clone being made from Zod's body, which would have made it more symbolic).

      Superman could have (and should have) had character growth even if he was not the traditional Superman that ripped his shirt yet.

      Never said it was. I was talking about Luke's maturity as a hero, and the way his behavior, personality, and decision-making evolve with his gathering wisdom and experience. I believe this was the intention for Superman, which was supposed to culminate organically with JL.
      You use Anakin and Neo as examples, but you're just making my point for me. They each start out naive and rough, and only become their peak iconic selves at the end after stumbling, making mistakes, feeling conflicted, and growing.
      They also each take a trilogy to do that, which is what I suggested fans give Superman a chance to do. They didn't. Thus, I called them impatient.
      Hell, they didn't give Anakin a chance either. His portrayal was thrashed thoroughly with each movie, with people frustrated with George Lucas not portraying him as cool and badass as Vader even though he was still working his way to becoming that iconic form.

      Neo had a clear charcter arc in The Matrix. It didn't take a whole trilogy to make him grow. He started growing in the first act of the movie when he makes a big decision and learns new things. The Neo from the beginning of the movie is an entire different person from the Neo in the last scene. So there's an arc in just that movie regardless of how he evolves in the sequels.
      Same for Michael Corleone. He had a clear arc in The Godfather but still wasn't in his most mature form.
      Again I don't think you really understand what an arc is.

      Then you're misdiagnosing Superman's criticism.
      People can love non mature versions of characters, just like they can hate mature versions of them. It's all about how well developed the character is and how good the story is.
      Tom Holland's Spider-Man was well received even when his SM is young and immature and not the classic Spider-Man everybody is used to. Smallville had a young Clark Kent and it was a very successful TV series. Gotham had good reception with a younger Bruce and Gordon. And before you discredit these examples, know that there are countless of other examples where people enjoy non peak versions of characters, so don't bother.
      So what you consider people being impatient is in fact people frustrated because the aren't enjoying the ride. And people were not enjoying Superman as a character in MoS and BvS, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that he was a poorly developed character.

      How so? The character is the basicly the same as he was in the beginning, only with a cape, newly discovered powers and a better job. Just like in the beginning, he follows his father's ideal, he acts a bit douchey when things annoy him (whether it's a truck driver or a drone), he finds a job that helps him pursue Jor-El's ideal (along with Lois), just like he found a job that helped him pursue Pa Kent's ideal (along with Lois again), he's nice only to his loved ones, etc. There's pretty much barely inner growth, if any.

      Society is more complicated than that. Not everyone agrees on what 'likeable' is all the time, and the popular interpretation of what makes something a hook for mass audiences is fickle.
      I see hypocrisy and double-standards in all walks of life, from politics to workplace behavior to movie reviews. That's also not rocket science.
      Dismissing the possibility with your own personal claim of not having seen it when I certainly have is no more convincing to me than dismissing Clark's journey in MoS, or the projected journey Snyder had obviously intended for him through JL.
      We clearly see different worlds somehow, and I don't think we'll be able to change each other's minds.

      It's not complicated to figure out why movies like TDK or Captain America: The Winter Soldier, or Logan were so much better received than movies like MoS or BvS.
      Yes, movies are subjective. You might love a movie that everybody else hates. However movies that are widely well received have certain characteristics that makes them be considered good. They have certain way of developing characters to make them likeable. It's not something random.
      MoS simply lacked those characteristics. That's why a lot of people didn't embrace this Superman. Sure, you can still love the character and call MoS good movie, but to a lot of people that wasn't the case. And that's something you don't want when it comes to such a pop culture icon as Superman. Superman shouldn't be a niche character.
      You said people were not patient as if they were guilty of not enjoying the movies, but like I said, it's the filmmaker's job to make the audience enjoy his movies.
